1USGBC-ILLINOIS | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

I joined the USGBC-Illinois Board of Directors in 2013 after running on a platform of expanding our work in existing buildings, intensifying our focus on building performance and environmental outcomes, and broadening the audience for sustainability best practices. Having served as the 2015 Board Chair of USGBC-Illinois, I feel great enthusiasm for the progress we have made in widening our reach in each of these areas.

Since our founding in 2002, we have advocated for green building design, construction, and operations through education, policy, and tools like LEED. This work has positioned Illinois with the national distinction of having the most LEED square footage per capita of any other state for three years running, and in the process we have built a large network of passionate, sustainability-minded professionals and experts.

In 2016, we plan to unveil an array of initiatives that goes even farther in bringing sustainability into all our neighborhoods – every nook and cranny. We plan to promote and support the implementation of no-regrets carbon drawdown strategies in Chicago’s neighborhoods, while at the same time fostering livability and resiliency. These initiatives will serve as a model we can then take to communities across Illinois and beyond. This work is both ambitious and necessary and, as always, will rely on the commitment and talent of our members and volunteers.

Regards,

Jenny Carney2015 USGBC-Illinois Board ChairYR&G

2USGBC-ILLINOIS | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Every year, events like Green Apple Day of Service and the GreenBuilt Home Tour allow volunteers and members to give back to their community and apply their sustainability awareness.

“Now in its fourth year, the 2015 Green Apple Day of Service represented 20 projects conceived and executed by students, their teachers, and industry mentors that helped introduce green-minded practices onto schools grounds. I particularly enjoyed the Smyth Elementary School project that my company hosted. Not only did we participate with the school, but we were able to work with local residents in their community garden. The annual Green Apple projects are particularly powerful because they can excite today’s youth and make them lifelong stewards for a cleaner, smarter, and more livable planet.”

“The GreenBuilt Home Tour 2015 was our biggest tour yet. It was a true ‘show and tell’ hosted by homeowners and building community professionals committed to sustainable living. The two-day event showcased 16 homes across greater Chicagoland constructed or retrofitted by over 30 green professionals. Eighty USGBC-Illinois volunteers served as planners, docents, and tour support for over 2,000 home visitors exposed to the latest clean energy technology, best practices to achieve a results-driven green renovation or new home construction, and the opportunity to speak with green contractors answering questions on cost and attainable results.

Throughout the year, we highlighted other examples of smart home building including ‘NetZero Electric Rockford Home & Landscape Renovation: A 20-Year Sustainability Story’ and ‘Barrington’s White House: Where History and High Performance Meet’. Green homes are taking off as homeowners commit to making a difference.”

4USGBC-ILLINOIS | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

USGBC-Illinois continues to foster the leadership that has helped position Illinois as a green building leader – like having more LEED-certified square footage per capital than any other state.

“Developing leadership and fostering a diverse green building movement is the goal of our certification trainings, industry expert TED-style talks, and other education programs. In 2015, our impact was evident. There are now an estimated 10,250 LEED-certified professionals in Illinois. More than 3,700 individuals attended USGBC-Illinois events. For me, the most memorable event was our LEED Fellow Credential Blitz that brought dedicated green building practitioners together with Illinois’ seven LEED Fellows, recognized as the leaders in their respective industries for green building know-how.”

Jason Westrope, LEED AP BC+C, CRXPrincipal, Development Management Associates (DMA), LLC USGBC-Illinois member since 2006

“USGBC’s Emerging Professionals program has a marketing kicker that reads, ‘Grow Your Chapter– Grow Your Career–Grow Your Community’. Throughout the year, their programs and community engagement initiatives helped make that happen. For example, as part of the Chicago Community Trust’s ‘On the Table’ conversation, there were community leaders with young professionals passionate about sustainability coming together for a lively conversation on improving the quality of life for all in our community. That’s why I was happy to help share my story and provide leadership training focused on important skills needed to be effective advocates.”

Gauging Progress

Our active partnerships, like the City of Chicago’s energy benchmarking program, allow us to stir more people, in more neighborhoods, to action including reducing carbon and saving water.

“With the help and support of other allied organizations, USGBC-Illinois staff and volunteers have helped the City of Chicago implement its energy benchmarking ordinance by providing 35 trainings for nearly 600 building owners, operators and engineers, and energy service professionals. We also held our first Chicago Data Jam where we shared best practices in data collection and use of Portfolio Manager with Chicago Housing Authority staff. Knowledge is power, and the bad economics of poor performing buildings is becoming clear to property owners. Building on our work this year is going to be exciting because we’ll be able to do even more outreach and engagement with building owners and operators on what can be done to improve their bottom line. A special thanks to Searle Funds at the Chicago Community Trust.”

“ Each and every year, the Emerald Awards provides a snapshot on how we are doing in our sustainability efforts in Chicago and throughout the state of Illinois. I’m inspired by the accomplishments, learn from them, and am reminded how USGBC-Illinois helps guide green building principles towards a better future.”
