Surveillance Data Object (SDO)

Surveillance Data Object (SDO) provides surveillance data implementation for a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach

The SDO has common eXtensible Markup Language (XML) fields pertinent to all surveillance data in human readable text

Combined XML and ASTERIX

Extract important data to XML, and raw ASTERIX payload available for legacy automation

XML allows all data to be read in plain text eliminating the need for complex ICDs and bit manipulation

The SDO supports non-proprietary, open architectures, allowing use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) products

Page 5: Implementing a Net-Centric Surveillance Data Object (SDO)

Common, Non-Proprietary SDO Example Representation

Where -- Lat / Long/ Altitude (WGS84)

When -- UTC Time

Who -- ICAO IDENT, Call Sign

What -- Source Indent (DSID, SIC,SAC)

Quality -- How reliable, 0 – 100%

Type -- Search, Beacon, Weather, Status

Raw Payload ASTERIX Data

Others as required

Quality and Performance requirements for real time Net-Centric Surveillance Data – Sunhillo SDDS –”Surveillance Aware”

Sunhillo Surveillance Data Distribution System (SDDS)

Distribute Surveillance Data

Multiple diverse sources to diverse users

Provide for dynamic and static load balancing

Provide services to validate, filter, and convert the data

Provide a monitoring and control

Provides a “Surveillance Aware” layer on top of the network that understands the unique characteristics of surveillance data

Monitors the Quality of Service (QoS) of the surveillance data

Ensure that messages are delivered once and only once to service consumers

Ensure quality of service with respect to message priority, response time, performance, etc.

Provide Security Authentication - Verify identities of service consumers

and providers Authorization - Provide access to services Audit - Monitor use of services

Provide common timely access to common surveillance information

On-Ramping the Surveillance Data

In less than just 2 weeks time, Surveillance Data within the UK Controlled Airspace, was:

On-ramped as an SDO to the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Data Exchange server

Validated including performance and quality

Conducted user training

And made available to visualization applications

Page 9: Implementing a Net-Centric Surveillance Data Object (SDO)

NATS wanted to test the assumption of the “on ramp” time.

It turned out to be true. WOW!!

Can this kind of technology change the world of ATM?

The question is “How do we use this technology to help transition to SESAR concepts cost effectively and quickly?”

SWIM is not the technology of tomorrow; it is needed today to enable tomorrow.

SWIM Operational Service:

Airport Surface Publication Service

• SWIM as Operational Service

• SWIM service achieved Initial

Operating Capability (IOC) in

April 2010

• Provides live feeds of airport

surface movements to airlines

• Defined a data architecture

• Used XML message set

• Content distributed to airlines

through Secure Gateway

• Thousands of messages per

SWIM-Enabled Surveillance

• What we learned:

– Open Systems Architecture

enables rapid integration

– COTS-based solution works

– Technology is available &

currently in operation

– Data architecture is an enabler

Page 14: Implementing a Net-Centric Surveillance Data Object (SDO)

SWIM is in operation supporting FAA-Airline collaboration decision making Same technology applied to different content type

Technology will NOT guarantee a successful SWIM implementation: information management AIXM, WXXM, FIXM falls short of surveillance data

Information sharing concept of operation critical ANSP must establish governance & policy model

Technology can guarantee a policy enforcement
