    Presidents Report

Roy has again done an excellent job in co-ordinatingeveryones attendance and duties at Royal Melbourneover the past five days with such a diversity of weatherconditions but the good news is that there is now onlyanother five days to go. A great effort from all mem-bers, partners and Sally Geary who put the hours in.Twenty members and partners enjoyed the after golfgathering at Zaika on Sunday night particularly swap-ping all those stories of those who couldnt find theircars or needed to park closer because of (supposed)injuries. After the World Cup next week the after golfdinner will be at Mei Hing in Highett.

Congratulations to Rebeccah Bartlett on being selectedas a finalist to the Rotary Peace Centers program. Re-beccah was advised during last week that she has beenselected to receive a 2014 Rotary Peace Fellowship forstudies as part of the Rotary Peace Centers for Interna-

tional Studies in peace and conflict resolution program. Now that she has been accepted Peter Flude and Me-gan have agreed to mentor Rebeccah in all things Rota-ry.

Due to a Trade Day at Victoria Golf Club, our usual 9holes and BBQ planned for Wednesday December 4,has been transferred to Woodlands. Martin has re-served 20 spots for a shot gun start at 5.30pm followedby a two course dinner. We will be part of a Woodlandsevent which they call Nine and Dine which will have aChristmas theme. It is expected to be a reasonably full

field but we will have our own tables in the main area sowe join in the overall Christmas atmosphere. The priceis the same as we normally pay at VGC ($30 for the golfand $30 for dinner). We started collecting names at Zai-ka and will continue to do so next week and at theBeaumaris Theatre.

We also want to collect names for volunteers for theConcourse event (December 6) and for the Christmasparty (December 19).

Speaking of the Concourse Festival, Kerrie re-ceived confirmation during last week that the Permitto conduct the Concourse Festival has been ap-proved after a considerable amount of informationwas requested from the Council regarding PublicLiability Insurance and traffic management. Well

    done Kerrie.

    Australian Masters Golf

Well the first week is over and we are still alive and bask-ing in the sunshine of doing our good deeds during theweek, culminating in the noisy wind-down celebration atZaika.

The response from members, wives and partners hasbeen terrific and at the Masters we had 35 participantsrepresenting our 43 members (including the wonderfulSallie Geary) so that equates to a participation rate of81%

We are well on track to reach our target figure of $10,000from the two golf events and even though it can be bor-ing, dull and cold and wet (or very warm) it was fun lastweek to have the chance to really get to know the peopleyou are working with as well as chatting to the publicwhilst promoting Rotarys name.

In fact a few people were so impressed with our effortsthat they voluntarily donated $28.50 and a UAE ryal (orwhatever it is) to the club funds.

I will report back further after the World Cup of Golf thiscoming week but I am so pleased with the response fromour members and their partners who have volunteeredfor this major fund-raising effort.

There were some major contributors, of whom more later, but when I was congratulating and thanking Chris DArcyon his commitment, his response was that you should not

join something unless you were prepared to be involvedin its activities a view with which I agree totally.

Thanks again folks. I hope to see you at the World Cup.

    Roy

Former RCOB Treasurer Richard showed that parking cars ina straight line was more difficult than keeping the club ac-counts straight!

It took PE Ken a while but he finally got the hang of the wet weather gear! Tiring work for someone! No nameno pack drill as they say.

Chris rugged upagainst the worst ofthe weather.

    Gorner Glacier,Switzerland

    Photograph by RobbieShone,

Beneath the stars, two scien-tific explorers descend into

the icy depths of a moulin onthe Gorner Glacier in Switzer-land. The freshly exposedrock above the glacier on theleft-hand side shows how theice has melted under an in-creasingly warm world. These explorers are mappingthe changes taking placebeneath the surface. Theirwork must be carried out atnight because high daytimetemperatures create vastamounts of melt water, mak-

    ing exploration difficult anddangerous.
