Wow - 2010! I remember vividly sitting in my second grade class listening to my very mature 22-year- old second grade teacher say to all of us how we would most certainly live to experience the year 2000. I remember almost laughing out loud thinking, "No way! We will all be dead or really, really, old!" Then I figured out it meant I would be 40-something. Well, now 2000 is ten years ago already; time speeds up as we grow older, doesn't it?

If you love to sing and worship and have always thought about participating in the worship ensembles but have always found a reason not to, don't let time fly by! Is God prompting you to use your gift for service? Maybe this is the year and month to make it happen. Can I encourage you to jump in and give it a try? Is there any other activity that is better than one that honors the Lord, blesses his name, and brings a smile to his face?

Drop in and give the Celebration Choir a try on Wednesdays at 6:45 pm in the choir room. Or if you're an instrumentalist, give me a call, I'd love to talk with you.

There have been so many great resources written in the last few years about worship. Here are a few quotes from writers that I've been both inspired and challenged by.

William Barclay - The humblest and the most unseen activity in the world can be the true worship of God. Work and worship literally become one. Man's chief end is to

glorify God and to enjoy him forever; and man carries out that function when he does what God sent him into the world to do. Work well done rises like a hymn of praise to God. This means that the doctor on his rounds, the scientist in his laboratory, the teacher in his classroom, the musician at his music, the artist at his canvas, the shop assistant at his counter, the typist at her typewriter, the housewife in her kitchen -- all who are doing the work of the world as it should be done are joining in a great act of worship. Harold Best - The Scriptures include or allude to just about every approach to worship there is: organized, spontaneous, public, private, simple, complex, ornate or plain. Yet there is no comment anywhere about any one way being preferred over another. Rather, it is the spiritual condition of the worshiper that determines whether or not God is at work. This fact alone countermands the tendency to assume that if we could just find the correct or fashionably relevant system, all will be well and God will come down. This doesn't imply that we have no responsibility to make intelligent and sensitive choices or to be creative. But whatever these choices eventually are, they are incapable all by themselves of establishing the superiority of one system over another. (Music Through the Eyes of Faith, Chapter 7, "The Nature of Worship, Faith, Grace, and Music Making," Harper Collins, 1993, p. 146.)

Steve Bradbury - It is far too easy, within the current upsurge of creative input in the realm of worship, to find ourselves chasing spiritual or aesthetic experiences, as if the highest achievements of our whole pilgrimage on earth was to enter some kind of praise-induced ecstasy. I wonder sometimes whether it is worship we worship, whether what we experience in music and song is actually our primary motivation, rather than honor ing God. Fundamentally, authentic worship is about pursuing that which pleases God, not us. It is about lives lived in service to God and neighbor, lives which are 'living sacrifices', which are engaged in God's work in the world. (Target Magazine)

Geoff Bullock - We've made worship self-centered instead of God-centered. We lobby for what we want: 'I don't like the songs', 'I don't like the volume'. It's as if we're worshipping worship instead of worshipping God. Worship is not a musical experience. Musicians, singers and worship leaders can no more create a worship experience than an evangelist can create a salvation experience. Both worship and salvation are decisions - decisions that only individuals can make.

Having a relationship of love and faith with Jesus is an important part of discipleship. Those who walk with Christ do so because he has first loved us and invited us to be his child. This is the wonderful part of discipleship; being a friend of Jesus. But the word disciple is the root word for the word discipline. There is no way to be a disciple without participating in the disciplined life.

It has probably been true of every generation at some level, but I sense that my own generation and the generations immediately after me are not very disciplined. I’m not sure it is in anyone’s nature to enjoy being disciplined, but when a culture or community lacks any d isc ip l ine, l i fe gets pret ty chaotic. A church for example t ha t l a cks d i s c i p l i nes by definition cannot be Christ-like because it has failed to form peop le who are d isc ip les (disciplined believers).

T h e r e a r e m a n y , m a n y disciplines to the Christian life, but I’ve been reflecting recently on some of the disciplines that I sense as a culture and as a people we greatly lack. Here is my list – albeit incomplete - of three spiritual disciplines that I believe my generation needs to make a priority as believers.

Sabbath Keeping

Commands to observe a Sabbath rest occur many places in Scripture, but there are two commands in particular that reflect the reasons for God’s Sabbath command. In Exodus 20:11 believers are told to honor the Sabbath because “in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day.” In a second version

(Deuteronomy 5:15), God wants the Israelites to keep Sabbath so that they can remember that they were once slaves in Egypt and “the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.” So keeping Sabbath is about remember ing God as both creator and redeemer. It is about finding ways to celebrate being both God’s unique creation and God’s beloved children. It is about rest and worship.

R e s t i n g a n d w o r s h i p i n g (especially disciplined rest and worship) are not strengths of the current culture. Most people today rest when they finally are worn out and they worship when there aren ’ t any press ing c o n f l i c t s . M a k i n g t h e commitment to rest regularly and worship regularly is part of Christian discipleship.

Giving

The biblical command to set aside a tithe of one’s income is a discipline about lordship. Setting apar t the f i rs t - f ru i ts is a discipline that reminds God’s people that everything they have ultimately is a gift from his hand. It is a generalization, but I think my generation gives when they can and gives when they are inspired but they do not give as a discipline. Certainly if that does not change there are going to be significant problems facing all churches, but more than that, I b e l i e v e i t r e f l e c t s a n undisciplined consumer nature that keeps my generation living beyond their means. Living with giving as a discipline is a part of the disciple’s life.

Praying Prayer is a discipline that

reminds us that we are not finally in control. It is the regular and systematic act of inviting God into the circumstances of life. Disciplines are usually thought of as an act of independence, but p rayer is a d isc ip l ine o f dependence. In a time of radical individualism, disciples regularly p a r t i c i p a t e i n a s p i r i t u a l discipline that reminds them that they are never alone.

Accountability

I have been using the word discipline to mean an act or practice that develops the virtues of the Christian life, but the word d i s c i p l i n e a l s o m e a n s accountability. Parents discipline t h e i r c h i l d r e n . T e a c h e r s d i s c i p l i n e t h e i r s t u d e n t s . Disciples of Christ invite this kind of discipline in their life. We allow God – usually through other believers – to discipline us. This is hard. My generation generally doesn’t like people telling them what to do. But true disciples of Jesus look for people to help them stay accountable.

This is my list of disciplines

that I am working on as a disciple of Jesus. What is your list? As the church enters into the Lenten season, reflect on the disciplines that you lack as a disciple of Jesus Christ and commit yourself to work on them this season. The call to be a disciple of Jesus is a call to the disciplined life.

- Pastor Scott Daniels

It has probably been true of every generation at some level, but I sense that my own

generation and the generations immediately after me are not very disciplined.

Pastor Keegan Lenker Email: [email protected] Phone: 626.351.2436

I recently finished reading Donald Miller’s newest book entitled, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years: What I Learned While Editing My Life. I was interested in reading the book because I’ve always enjoyed Donald Miller, but found myself looking at my life closely as I read.

Without ruining it for you, he speaks about his life in terms of narrative. He began to look at the elements of a story and what makes a good story, one of those being that a main character goes through conflict to reach a goal. He began to look at the realities of his life and realized he wasn’t living a good story.

Donald then became intentional about his story. He recognized there would need to be intentional decisions and risks to begin to live a healthier story. So he did it. He hiked a major mountain, biked across the country, and sat down with his father who abandoned him as a little boy.

For most people, it is easy to get caught up in patterns and rhythms of living that help life go along. We go to college, get a career, get a spouse, have kids, buy the dream home, work 40+ years, and then live the high life of retirement.

While I don’t think these things are bad or poor choices, I think the messages of the world

concerning these sometimes create distractions for us in living a great story. We like safety. We like comfort. I’m just growing to realize I think taking risks that many don’t think are possible are great ways to experience Christ and also live a better story.

I’ll confess I’m living into these patterns. I love my wife, my children, my job, my home, and hope I don’t work for 40+ years (Although that will probably be the case). I’ve just begun to think about how I may be cheating my family on experiencing Christ in new and fresh ways because I’m more interested in my comfort than in taking a risk that will cause all of us to live a better story and be forced to depend on Christ a little more, too.

If you read this book you just might find yourself with your mind spinning at the possibilities for you and your family. I’ll let God do that for you as you grow to know H im more th is year and encourage you to read a book that is a quick read.

Then we should have some coffee and talk about what this may mean for our lives.

- Pastor Keegan Lenker

Chinese New Year February 14, 2010 is the Chinese New Year and rings in the year of the Tiger. The Chinese follow a lunar calendar, so New Year’s Day changes every year. It usually falls in late January to mid February. There are 12 zodiac signs. They are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Lamb, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The Chinese congregation will have a potluck gathering with lots of good Chinese food on February 12 to usher in the New Year. New Year’s Eve is reserved for the family.

Pastor Darwin Ng Email: [email protected] Phone: 626.351.2461

One time I was talking to an older Chinese immigrant who moved to the US after retirement. I told her in Chinese that my children are ABCs (which stands for American Born Chinese). She had several years of English as a Second Language classes from the local adult school. Be fore we conc luded the conversation, I realized that she thought ABC represented the alphabet since my children were born and raised here with English as their language of choice.

In the Asian American community, there are phrases to describe the immigrants and their descendents who are raised in the U.S. These are some of them:

Asian Americans: These are Americans of Asian descent with Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese Americans being the top six ethnic sub-groups, in order of population size.

Second Generation: refers to those born to immigrant parents, who may or may not be fluent in their parents’ home language.

1.5 Generation: those born overseas who came here in their teens and younger. They are, in general, bilingual and bi-cultural. However, many struggle with their cultural identity because they may not feel they belong to either their parents’ culture or to their new adopted country’s culture. I knew of a high school junior who had been in the U.S. five years and refused to go to an American restaurant because she did not understand the menu.

Among Chinese Americans

ABC: American Born Chinese

OBC: Overseas Born Chinese (the immigrants)

ARC: American Raised Chinese; the 1 ½ generation (a term infrequently used)

Among Japanese Americans

Issei: First generation immigrants

Nisei: Second generation

Sansei: Third generation. The list continues to Yongsei and Gosei as the fourth and fifth generations.

Among Korean Americans

Gyopo: Any Korean living outside of Korea; The 1.5 generation is called just that.

To serve these second generation Chinese and Asians, Michelle Park has joined us to help in this ministry. She is working part time and started in January. Here’s a note from Michelle:

Greetings! It has been a wonderful first week here, a truly blessed way to begin a new year. I would like to take this time to introduce myself to you. My name is Michelle Park and I am the new Chinese Youth Ministry Assistant working alongside Pastors Keegan and Darwin. I recently graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a B.S. in Marketing and a Masters in Business Administration. I was born in Seoul, Korea, but moved to Chicago when I was six years old and grew up mostly in Monterey,

California. I was raised in a Christian home by my mother, who is one of the most courageous and selfless people I have ever known. The journey of my faith and relationship with Christ goes hand-in-hand with the struggles my mother and I went through in the American culture and our constant search for the balance between our two “identities.” What I have learned from the experience God has granted me is that I am first and foremost a child of God. I still have a long way to go and so much to learn. But of two things I am absolutely certain: there is nothing greater than the love of God; and there is no success more satisfying than obedience to God’s will. I am so thankful to be here and I look forward to working together with the Body of Christ and being used by God.

Homero Bosso was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, of Italian parents. He received his undergraduate degree in Brazil and came to the US for graduate school and also to marry Julia, having met her in high school. After 19 years of marriage, God did a miracle and gave the Bossos a baby that they always dreamed of: Dora Christy, Gift from God. Before Dora’s birth, Homero did not have

much contact with children, but after Dora's birth, Homero has been passionate about children and found that he was actually able to relate to them very well. Homero has two masters degrees, one in Electronic Engineering and one in Bio-Medical Engineering, but he currently works as the Information Technologies manager for Los Angeles World Airports and commutes to LAX daily. The Bossos have been attending PazNaz for over 10 years, since moving to Pasadena. Homero enjoys playing Santa at Christmas time and is getting better at it each year. He loves to see the children's faces when they see him stride in as Santa Claus. Homero enjoys many outdoor sports: long distance bike riding, running, swimming, skiing, and he recently picked up golf with his father-in-law.

The Bossos have been supervisors in the Early Childhood Department for over 4 years. They headed up Operation Christmas Child last fall, and now they are helping lead the Kindergarten class. Homero’s love for Christ, the children of PazNaz, and the world makes him a volunteer that is devoted and loved. Thank you and God bless you, Homero Bosso!

Awesome! This is what people all over the United States say when they see The Ugandan Orphans Choir perform. Ugandan children are known for their outstanding musical talents, and these 10 children are delighting audiences with songs and tribal dances from their homeland. The Ugandan Orphans Choir is a ministry of Childcare Worldwide and this is the 5th Choir that has toured in the U.S. Childcare Worldwide has ministered in East Africa and around the globe for over 25 years and has made a difference in the lives of thousands of boys and girls, helping them survive and succeed. Plan to come to a great encounter of “mission in action!”
