Advantages of Vacuum as aMedium
Vacuum is an ideal dielectric medium for circuit breakerapplications, since an interrupting and insulating medium is notrequired.
Some of the salient advantages are :
• High speed operation due to very small contact travel. Breakingtime is extremely low (<60msecs)
• Constant dielecric medium since no decomposition products• Long life, since absence of oxidization keeps the contact
surface clean. It also gives constant contact resistance overthe whole life of the breaker
• Environment friendly since neither gas exhaust nor operationnoise to pollute the surroundings. There is also no risk ofexplosion or fire
