Ozone depletion

Ozone depletion is another result of pollution. Chemicals released by our activities affect the stratosphere , one of the atmospheric layers surrounding earth. The ozone layer in the stratosphere protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Air pollutionWhen people think about air pollution, they

usually think about smog, acid rain, CFC's, and other forms of outdoor air pollution. But did you know that air pollution also can exist inside homes and other buildings? It can, and every year, the health of many people is affected by chemical substances present in the air within buildings.

Air pollution & urban The United States has a population of 296

million and 39 cities that have more than one million people.

India has 37 cities with a population of 1 million or more people, which is surprisingly low given its national population of over 1 billion.

China has 94 cities with more than a million people each, accounting for nearly a quarter of the global total 408 such cities. However only 15% of China’s total population of 1.4 billion lives in those cities

NTPC NTPC is a major power providing corporation in India. It has ISO certification for EMS (Environment Management System) 14001. The corporation has a pro-active approach for preserving the natural environment and resources like water, oil and gas and fuels in places where it is setting up power plants.

Page 24: Industrial pollution & environmental degradation

NTPC This has been possible through-(a) Optimum utilisation of equipment

adopting latest techniques and upgrading existing equipment.

(b) Minimising waste generation by maximising ash utilisation.

(e) Ecological monitoring, reviews and online database management for all its power stations.

Control of Environmental Degradation

Control of Environmental DegradationEvery litre of waste water discharged by our industry pollutes

eight times the quantity of freshwater. How can the industrial pollution of fresh water be reduced? Some suggestions are-

(i) minimising use water for processing by reusing and recycling it in two or more successive stages

(ii) harvesting of rainwater to meet water requirements(iii) treating hot water and effluents before releasing them in

rivers and ponds.Treatment of industrial effluents can be done in three phases(a) Primary treatment by mechanical means. This involves

screening, grinding, flocculation and sedimentation.(b) Secondary treatment by biological process(c) Tertiary treatment by biological, chemical and physical

processes. This involves recycling of wastewater

Noise pollution not only results in irritation and anger, it can also cause hearing impairment, increased heart rate and blood pressure among other physiological effects. Unwanted sound is an irritant and a source of stress. Industrial and construction activities, machinery, factory equipment, generators, saws and pneumatic and electric drills also make a lot of noise.

Page 27: Industrial pollution & environmental degradation

Noise pollution is gradually becoming a problem in cities as the population is growing and places are getting shorter. Even certain small scale companies or factories can be found in the city limits, for they were setup prior to urban development. Another major contributor to the noise is honking of sirens and horns by the vehicles which cause too much of mental disturbance.

The word "clatter" had been derived as of the Latin expression, “nausea”, which means superfluous sound
