Other countries might boast super clubs, huge sprawling, darkly lit empires of dance music that open until the dawn chorus.

But that doesn’t really work in Dubai – why would you want to be inside, when you can be dancing on the sand, the twinkling lights of skyscrapers behind you and the Persian Gulf lapping at your feet.

The latest super-venue to dominate the city and follow in Barasti and Nasimi’s sandy footsteps is Zero Gravity. Part beach club, part open-air nightclub and soon to be with a huge Infiniti pool upping their day-time game, the Marina venue is set to be the place this season (again).

Looking ahead, their mini-Sandance returns on October 23, with DXBeach welcoming Clean Bandit, Idris Elba, Klingande, Mistajam and more to the beach for a 15 hour party. Plus, they have ace bookings up their sleeve including Don Diablo, Camelphat, plus Pete Tong and Duke Dumont on NYE, not to mention their funk soul brother resident DJ Andrew Hartley. All hero, no zero.

Looking Back

Promoting a colossal music festival during two weeks of mourning is a very tough job, so hats off to Dubai Music Week for pulling in the people for their three day event. Musically, Ellie Goulding was our pick of the shows. Returning after her last Sandance visit 3 years ago, the pop star attracted a crowd that ranged from toddlers to 50 somethings. And they weren’t disappointed as she rocked and rolled through her hits including set highlights ‘Love Me Like You Do’ and a euphoric rendition of ‘Lights.’ Goulding loved it as much as we did, telling the audience she ‘loved playing to an engaged crowd.’

Sadly we missed local band Carl & The Reda Mafia on warm up (we heard nothing but good things about your set) due to some parking nightmares. A quick 30 minute hustle later, and we were in the packed crowd watching Bon Jovi do his thing for nearly two hours – which was neatly work the crowd on new numbers ‘Because We Can’ and ‘That’s What the Water Made Me’ and entice a full crowd sing-a-long on classics like ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ and ‘Always.’ We couldn’t help but feel there was a spark missing mid-set – maybe it was the absence of long-term guitarist Richie Sambora, and maybe it was the early October heat and humidity. But a strong closing sequence of ‘Keep The Faith’ and ‘It’s My Life’ meant that the crowd went away happy (well, until they got to the grid-locked car park).

Due to the untimely demise of The Basement, Shibuya has found a new home at this season’s success story – Square @ JW Marquis. Arriving at the club just before midnight, it was clear why Square has been turning heads of late. Smokingroove was putting the pristine Funktion One system through its paces with their trademark bumping house grooves.

Mr Mr stepped up next and delivered a tightly woven mix of house music in all its varied forms: his mix was as solid as it comes with the unreleased Mat.Joe remix of Phil Fuldner’s “Needin Someone” hitting the mark.

The headline set came courtesy of German House legend Ian Pooley, an artist that I have been waiting to see for a very long time, 18 years to be exact. Pooley expertly picked his way through a captivating set of house music, with his remix of Boris Dlugosh’s “Never Enough” drawing whoops and cheers from the crowd. Not staying in one place for too long, his funk laden detour was a welcome surprise and come 3amm Pooley dropped Teddy Pendergrass ‘You Cant Hide from Yourself’ and the whole ethos of Shibuya made sense: good honest music, obscure sub genres need not apply.

David August’s arrival in Dubai had been nothing short of mythological, with his previous two dates cancelled due to health issues, leaving a primed fan club in the city hungry for his much vaunted live set.

Circumnavigating the front door throng was a sure sign that something big was taking place 41 floors up. Stepping foot in to the warehouse space, it was already going off as Sam Farsio expertly laid down the foundations for August.

August was due to play from midnight until 1.30, but a late arrival meant that he closed out the event. His combination of ethereal soundscapes and rattling percussion paired with his trademark basslines captivated the dancefloor from the first note. Each carefully crafted breakdown was built to breaking point, before the barrage of chest beating bass lines came crashing to test the limits of the beefed up VOID sound system. This has to be one of the stand out events of the season so far, it really delivered on so many levels.

Local NewsWOO HOO! F1 LINE UP ANNOUNCED

After months of speculation – some of which turned out to be true – Flash have released the line up for the F1 post-race concerts. Latin legend Enrique Iglesias opens up proceedings on Friday November 27, before handing over to this year’s Glastonbury headliners Florence and the Machine. And closing out the 3 day festival of racing on Sunday 29 are UK indie band Blur, who’ll be playing huge hits like ‘Song 2’ and ‘Coffee and TV’ live on the du Arena stage on Yas Island. FATBOY SLIM BACK IN THE UAE

SECRET CIRCLE RETURNS

Pacha have confirmed that Fatboy Slim is returning to the city to play their main room on December 18. The hugely popular UK star behind ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’ and ‘Right Here Right Now’ is no stranger to the city, having played here several times, most recently for Sandance in 2012 and 2014 and is sure to bring in the numbers at the Madinat Club.

One of the biggest mid-week nights in the history of the UAE, Secret Circle have returned to dominate Monday nights (and Tuesday mornings), taking over Level 41 from October 19, with Jixo and Danz on warm up and SC resident Aidin Karami on closing duties. The cult party plays deep, tech-laced house and regularly packed out their previous home, The Basement and are promising to beef up the light and sound at their new Media One Hotel venue.

IDRIS ELBA BOLDLY GOES TO DXBEACH

Get your Halloween on at XL this year, with special guest Craig David bringing his TS5 party to the city on Saturday October 31. Starting out as the name of his Miami pre-party at his penthouse, TS5 is now his global party brand and will be making its debut at XL’s Halloween party. He’ll be joined by Greg Stainer, Brooklyn and Benni T on the decks, and tickets are AED200 from Platinumlist.ae.

We were lucky enough to be at the press conference for the new Star Trek film, which will be partially shot in Dubai. Idris Elba, who’s likely to be cast as a villain in the 3rd installment of the re-booted franchise, is sticking around after the 10 day shoot to DJ at DXBeach at Zero Gravity on October 23. There’s no word on whether he’ll be inviting down the crew and cast, including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban & Zachary Quinto reprising his role as Spock, the first time he’s played a Vulcan

since the death of the original Spock Leonard Nimoy last year.

EDEN BEACH CLUB IS BACK! 

Following their sudden closing earlier this year, Eden Beach Club are back up and running and open for business from October 16 with Ibiza favourite Technasia headlining. They've got a big month of bookings confirmed, with Detroit house legend Carl Craig dropping a set on Friday October 23, while they close the month with a huge Diynamic showcase featuring three of their biggest artists - Kollectiv Trumstrasse, Karmon and Thyladomid. The beach club at the Rixos on the Palm is promising a bigger and better set up and production at the venue which boasts a swim up cocktail bar, private beach bungalows and sunbeds all overlooking the Palm Jumeirah, with resident DJ KaY TeK supplying the warm up sounds.

VIBE A LIVE

Night Vibes are turning up the heat on their bookings this month at Tamanya Terrace, with three biggies confirmed. Just Be, AKA Bushwacka from The End, is confirmed for a return to the city on October 16, while Berlin Get Physical duo Smash TV (pictured) are headlining at the Radisson Dubai Media City venue the following week. And after his stand out show earlier in the year, Mr C is back for another acid-tech-house journey on November 6.

GET IN THE BRAZILIAN SPIRIT

Rock Nation are back in action and bringing out Universal Music signing Fuzz Culture, an Indian electronic duo on Friday October 16 at the Music Room. Comprised of Arsh Sharma and Srijan Mahajan, their live show has been heavily praised for its melody and groove, and they come with a big support bill including Infusion favourites Carl and the Reda Mafia and Fidgit, as well as Sandstorm, Senior Service and Lucas Lean. Tickets AED75, doors open at 8pm.

The region’s leading Brazilian party is back at Dek on 8 on Thursday October 15 with Geneva based Brazilian DJ Thiago Lemos AKA Big T headlining. Playing Brazilian hits from 6pm, and no doubt featuring his favourite genres of hip hop, drum and bass and funk, the night also features resident DJ Anderson Lima on the 1s and 2s, while there’s a bar discount for Facecard holders all night.

Into the Groove

Now into their fourth season (bravo!) the Groove on the Grass team are back at their Emirates Golf Course home for their October 23 opening with Gui Boratto, Troy Pierce, Ambivalent and DJ Hell. Now with a 2nd stage, an expanded marketplace and bigger production, we caught up with the team to find out what to expect…

Welcome back for your biggest season yet - what have you changed, we hear there's a permanent 2nd stage this season? Warren: Our production design and layout takes on a new identity with every new season and this one is no exception. We have a second stage this year and there are many challenges since the space we have is not the biggest, however we are working with the best production companies in the region to make it happen. Everything onsite is built from scratch on an empty canvas, it allows us to be very creative but there’s a lot of effort both physically and financially.

Musically, you're known for forward thinking house and techno and you're not afraid to take things experimental, is that

going to continue? Deian: Our main goal musically is to deliver intelligent bookings which push the boundaries of what is seen as easily acceptable in this market, but most importantly music we as a team love, and artists which we strongly believe will amaze the audience. We will continue to introduce, influence and educate the market by going against the grain of the standardized formats of club music you can get anywhere else. We want people to come to the event with an open mind and experience something new, perhaps something that will push them to dig deeper and grow

Who are you most excited about seeing on your Oct 23 line up? Deian: These artists are some of our personal childhood heroes; the entire lineup is cultivated based on a deep appreciation for each of their careers and input into the electronic music movement on a global scale. We are super excited for the experience as a whole and can’t wait to introduce each and every artist on this lineup.

The market and setting at GOTG is a big part of its success - who's involved this year? Alexis: Introducing the marketplace 2 seasons ago has welcomed a whole new wave of creative individuals and inspiring artists. I really enjoy bringing alternative fashion to the field, to expose both the artist and the people to something new and refreshing. We have uniquely sourced bohemian accessories, colourful art work and forward thinking fashion brands

have been the hardest parts of getting the event going, what have been the big struggles? Deian: Growing an event from small to large scale in Dubai is the hardest thing any of us have ever done in our lives, anyone can do it with commercial acts but for us we have to work so much harder since we are in the business of introducing music and introducing artists yet still trying to grow to a large scale.

And how do you combat DJ agents who see Dubai and triple their prices, especially with so much competition in the market over here? Deian: We have very close connections with most agencies, and they understand the quality of our event vs. some of the competitors in the market who are just running a business or jumping on the bandwagon. We do this from the heart, that is the difference... the agents, the crowd, and the artists can see what is truly genuine, and they can make their choices of where to book, party and play. Others still ask for the triple prices, and sometimes we have to have lots of negotiations: it's a grueling process but in the end when that lineup is finished, we are very proud and get really excited for the artist performances.

When we heard that Dave Chappelle, Trevor Noah and

lots more were coming to town for the inaugural Dubai

Comedy Festival, we went straight to our comedic man

in the know. But he was busy, so we ended up with Infusion’s very own funny

man Sam Moult who gives us the lowdown on what to

expect this October…DAVE CHAPELLE

So who are you and what do you do? That sounded like Arnie saying "Who is your Daddy ad what does he do?” OK, so I am Sam, originally from the UK. I’m a typical Brit… I like tea, have a beer belly and my girlfriend’s Filipino. I do stand-up comedy in the UAE.

So, tell us about comedy in Dubai... Dave Chapelle (Oct 22 and 23) is on the line-up for the Dubai Comedy Festival and, since it’s his debut performance here, he will definitely have the audience crying. Daily Show newbie Trevor Noah (Oct 24) is also

back in town for another gig. There are also some big local

names too, my good friend Ali Al Sayed (Oct 19) is going to be having his own show called

‘Onestly Sbeaking’ which will be hilarious.

Who should I see and why? Trevor Noah is my pick of the festival because his ethnic background and South African upbringing means that he just ‘gets’ Dubai humour. But don’t forget to check out some of the local grassroots nights too: not only will I be there, but they’ll tackle the funny topics in Dubai that we all love to laugh about.

Has the Angry Monkey got his own show, if not why not? He should definitely have one! But his show can only be an hour, so we’d have to cut it short because the Monkey easily has a week’s worth of solid material here talking about everything from Dubai promoters to taxi queues.

Dubai is funny because… It is a melting pot of different nationalities, and, fortunately, everyone is ready to laugh at themselves. You might disagree with me, but

with most people being here for one thing – money – we have a very unique sense of ‘why does it matter where I’m from?’ and can really let go and laugh at ourselves.

The funniest person in Dubai is? Can I say me? No. I’d probably disagree with that anyway. For this one, I actually already know the answer, it’s my comedy mentor Omar Ismail. His mix of Emirati/Geordie results in performances that have literally had me OMGROFLMAO. He’s going to be on stage beside me at Stereo Arcade’s Bar on October 18th for Dubomedy’s Comedy Jam!

Go and see as much comedy as you can! Big acts, grassroots nights, take full advantage and laugh your socks off!

Buy your ticket in advance because some nights WILL sell out.

Ask for a picture with a comedian. We love it (because we don’t usually get many).

Go to a different kind of comedy than your usual (e.g. Dubomedy’s Funny Girls show on Oct 17)

Try comedy yourself! There are plenty of places in Dubai to teach you how to boost your self-esteem and public speaking abilities.

Get serious about comedy. Dubai Comedy Festival is going to be BIG and we can’t wait!

Keep going to comedy events AFTER the Dubai Comedy Festival. There’s regular, weekly events going on around the UAE. In fact, I’ve even got a gig confirmed in March already! Come and see us do what we love.

Stay at home watching cat videos to make yourself laugh – let the professionals do it.

Beirut in the Mix, like most of the best ideas, started life organically as an outlet for a group of friends to play music

– and grew into something much, much more. A weekly radio show on the city’s best radio station Mix FM, Beirut in the Mix hosted global talents like Richie Hawtin and Sasha on their show, while they also branched out into events and welcomed names like Carl Craig, Mind Against, Danny Howells and more to the city, often to play until sunrise to a group of like-minded clubbers. Salah from Techfui will be representing at the opening party on October 22 alongside Ronin from Beirut in the Mix, while Infusion’s very own Charl

Chaka will be on hand to deliver some deep beats. Headlining is Bacho, one of the key players in the growing Georgian scene, and one of the DJs for the Minibus techno party/label in Tbilisi.

On making new music: “I'm always nervous before starting a record because I can never sleep. I'm like, 'I have no good ideas, everyone is gonna see through me.”

On ‘making’ the Thundercats theme tune: "I think someone got in and messed with my Wikipedia page. I was just reading that out loud and I thought it was so funny. I was like, 'I'm just gonna leave it'."

On the VIP culture: "If you can't get in the Vip (area), you're not supposed to be in there. I try not to go to clubs with Vip areas too much anyway; I don't like those kind of places. But, yeah, it happens more often than not, it's true."

On the future of music: “I don't want to sound depressing, but I'm not sure if music 15, 20 years from now is going to sound so different from how it sounds today, or even how it sounded in 1998, unless people are sort of willing to push it forward a bit. I think with record sales being so low and with downloads, people stress so much on having this one hit single that we just go for the most obvious thing so much of the time. Everyone's terrified of not having their smash single, so we just go the same tropes, the same tried-and-true tricks, the same chord progressions.”

Album Reviews

Pierre Ravan: spiritualist, meditating man and, previously, the driving musical force behind Pacha’s opening season before leaving the Madinat venue earlier this year.

After a busy summer playing across Europe, he’s saddled up his KaRavan again for another outing of spiritual and global grooves. If you’ve listened to his previous albums, you’ll know to expect sun-dappled melodies (Disc 1) and a musical mood that goes from sunset to after dark (Disc 2).

Old friends and Pacha royalty like Kiko Navarro feature, notably on Nacho Marco’s bustling acid rework of Navarro’s ‘Fly Angel,’ while tracks from big room regulars like Ramon Tapia, Monika Kruse and House of Afrika regular Culoe De Song are also skillfully blended into the mix. With no buzzing EDM drops, and long, involved mixes, this is a patient compilation, but one that rewards the listener as it twists and grows and builds.

In a dizzyingly short space of time, Disclosure – the only just out of puberty brother brother duo of Howard and Guy Lawrence – went from zero to hero. They defined the dance music scene in 2013 with smash hits like ‘Latch’ and ‘White Noise,’ helping put guest vocalists Sam Smith and Jessie Ware into the pop limelight.

Their full album, Settle, was nominated for a Grammy, saw the band embark on a worldwide tour that’s only just stopped while the band’s sound – a pop-friendly mix of garage and house – became a byword for a new generation of dance music.

How do you follow that? By updating the template with a new cast of vocalists and largely by dialing down the tempos.

Where Settle was a hybrid of 2 step and house, Caracal has an electronic, swing-heavy R&B groove to it, as evidenced by their collaboration with Sam Smith on ‘Omen.’ It’s followed by the sultry house hit of ‘Hourglass’ and the soft-focus funk of ‘Magnets’ with Lorde. But the album’s at its best when it ramps up the tempo – Gregory Porter delivers with album highlight ‘Holding On’ while ‘Echoes’ is a club-friendly slice of garage.

It’s a highly polished album, that has several high points – but it lacks the raw dancefloor spark and creativity of their debut album, and no amount of studio genius can hide that.

The best thing about running your own label is… You don’t have to wait 2 months for an email response, better publicity, working with artists that are much better producers than those in the Top 100.

The worst thing is… It takes time for the label to build its name.

We’ve had support from… Eddie Amador, Manuel De La Mare, S-Man, Luigi Rocca, Jean Claude Ades, DJ PP...

What does your label sound like? We are currently signing deep house, tech and techno.

How do you make yourself stand out? With consistency and love for the music.

How does a smash hit happen? When you don’t expect it. When you make a track that’s really you, it’s not for some label sound, but it’s you, your roots. My track ‘The Gucha’ reached No.6 in the Beatport Top 100 House chart.

How involved are you with UAE/Middle East producers, how can people get in touch with you? I would say that almost everyone from the local DJ/Producer scene knows me. I’m always open for collaboration with any of those talents. I’ve already worked with some of them in the past few years as well as ongoing projects with new names. Getting in touch is easy - Facebook and email is the best way, [email protected].

How hard is it to make money as a record label? Honestly, it is very hard. Piracy is killing the business for everyone, not just us, but it will never stop us pushing our artists as much as we can and pay them whatever is in their contract with the label, twice on an annual basis.

And what’s next for your label? 

At the moment we have had releases from myself, Dany Cohiba, Eddie Amador, but there are some big names that will appear on our list. From our local UAE artists, we’ve got Andy Buchan onboard and we are very excited about his release. It’s an amazing deep vocal house tune, that definitely will be pushed and do some damage.

My first musical influence was… Definitely my Dad, he is one of the greatest musicians I have ever seen. He’s the reason I got into producing music and writing songs. When I was a young he used to sit me down next to him by the piano and he would play for hours.

The last pop star I liked was… Hmm... I would say ‘Years and Years, their new song ‘Shining’ is real good.

My sound is best described as… All I can say is that it’s good music, my music is real and my sound is different, I try to use as many melodies and chords as I can. I don’t really like to sample in my production, I would rather show people what I can create from scratch. Because ‘real talk’ anyone can sample, so I would rather show my music talent and plus it is more fun when you actually play your beats.

Best piece of advice you’ve received? That would also have to be my Dad. My Dad is a businessman and he always tells me ‘’don’t trust anyone, no matter who they are.”

What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Hahaha well… I would have to say Selena Gomez ‘’Good For You,’ it’s just too catchy to not turn it up in the car.

Lamest claim to fame? I was once an extra on a sitcom for like 5 seconds... haha.

When I make it, the one thing I want on my rider is ? A Penthouse, and in my Penthouse I got pillars. 

My musical motto is… Be real and be your own artist. You want people to like you for you and your art. You don’t want to be the artist who made that one song people liked because it was catchy and then they forget about you. Stick to what you enjoy making and do it for yourself.

One thing you might not know about me is... I’m French, and have been a DJ/promoter since 1994. I moved to London in 2004 and have been in Dubai for the past few months.

My worst ever job was… Working for two months at a dog food factory as I was a young man and had to pay the bills.

My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Having played between John Acquaviva and Oxia in the late 90s. As I was really young, it will always be a special memory for me. 

What is your guiltiest pleasure? Chocolate without a doubt!

If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... It’s now. I’ve DJ’d for 20 years and had the pleasure of experiencing many types of music with different generations, but it’s as amazing now as it was back in the day.

If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Laurent Garnier.

I’m not a politician but… Of course I have an opinion and beliefs, but I’d rather keep them for myself.

Weird NewsIn what might be a world first, that is a wild leopard with a bowl stuck on its head. After 6 hours of struggling, it was finally sedated and its temporary hat taken off and set free again.

You think Dubai is expensive to live in but, but at least you get year round sunshine and a beach on your doorstep for your exhorbitate rent. Pity the poor people of London, where a literal bed under the stairs is going for AED3000 a month. That’s a bed. Under the stairs. Billed as a furnished room, the advert asked for tenants that didn’t want to ‘stay in their room’ much. Which, let’s be honest, is quite understandable.

So, you’re in a petrol station, and you see a spider on your petrol cap. Do you a) shoo it away b) find something to hit it with or – bearing in mind you’re in a petrol station – c) use your lighter to

burn the spider away.

Yup, you guessed it, c was the winner – and a petrol station in Michigan was the loser as the motorist set fire to his car, the petrol pump and presumably the spider. Have a Darwin award, sir.

Having been here 10 years, I can remember the good old day of Dubai’s pubs – when the Irish Village was the (emerald) jewel in the crown, and ordering anything other than burger and chips made the chef nervous with worry.

Thankfully, the city’s pub scene has come on in leaps and (drunken) bounds since then, with much-loved watering holes like Loca, McGettigans and Reform all offering something different (and crucially upping their food game).

And it’s Reform, the expensive but impressive outlet in Emirates Hills that’s behind the latest gastro-pub venture in the city, the H Hotel’s Black Lion.

Reform’s fingerprints are all over the outlet – from the well ultra clean black and white décor to the American-themed food and drink menu, there’s a clear train of thought, with well executed ideas.

Like the Shrimp Cocktail with a Bloody Mary sauce, made with freshly grated horseradish, a healthy alcoholic kick and prawns that had clearly been working out. We heard the Short Rib Hash with quails eggs was lip-smackingly good from the other end of the table, but were too late diving in with our fork and hit a virtually licked clean plate.

The drinks, an essential part of the pub process, were equally impressive – there are a range of hard-to-find imported American beers on tap, as well as several high quality UK ales, including a limited run Fullers special, Frontier.

Mains were impressive: the all day roast arrived piping hot and full of flavour, while my Angus beef burger with red onion and tomato relish was dripping with beefy juices and nestled in a sweet soft bun.

Whatever you do, leave room for the dessert menu. For the gluttons out there, or those who – shock horror – like to share their pudding, they offer larger portions as well as the standard servings. We destroyed the deep filled apple pie and the dark chocolate brownie with sour cherry ice cream, but as we got chatting to the head chef, he recommended the baked vanilla cheesecake with salted caramel crumble. Which we’ll be ordering on our next visit.

So, I’ve been reading a lot about the underground recently.

Who has it, who had it first, who’s underground but is just faking it to get the underground crowd?

Let me just interject here: SHUT THE F*** UP YOU SIMPERING MUPPETS.

Being underground is not a competition. Being underground is not boasting on social media bout how underground you are (pretty much the equivalent of online onanism), and being underground is not about playing the most obscure music you can find (that just makes you a bad DJ).

Yes, being ‘underground’ is credible, and yes there are a lot of ‘underground’ nights in Dubai competing for the same ‘underground’ crowd. But if you’re constantly looking over your shoulder and judging others on their underground credentials, you won’t be able to see where you’re going, which is overground. Whatever the hell that means.
