The Inglis Classic Yearling Sale catalogue features 63 relations to stakes winners including siblings to Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Japonisme (Choisir), recent Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up In Her Time (Time Thief) and Group Three winner Spright (Hinchinbrook).

winners) Your Song (Fastnet Rock), the consistent Nicconi (Bianconi) and young stallion Shamus Award (Snitzel).

“Widden is delighted to present a quality draft at Inglis’s first sale to be conducted at Riverside Stables. We have enjoyed tremendous success at the Classic Sale in the past, selling Group One winners Yankee Rose and Whobegotyou among others,” Widden Stud marketing and nominations manager Ryan McEvoy said.

“Star Witness had enjoyed a phenomenal year, Your Song continues to make an impression, while Nicconi sired the quinella in the Colonel Reeves at Ascot on Saturday with exciting sprinters State Solicitor and Caipirinha.

Continued on page 5>>

<< Continued from page 2 “Our draft, which also includes yearlings by Sebring, is sure to produce a consistent stream of winners and that is what the whole game is about.”

Among Widden Stud’s draft is a Sebring colt, who is catalogued as Lot 245, and is the first foal out of the twice winning mare Alberton Waltz (Testa Rossa). She is a blood sister to Listed-winning sprinter Testarhythm (Testa Rossa) and a half-sister to MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward).

Progeny by 21 first season stallions have also been catalogued for the February sale including Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), Deep Field (Northern Meteor), Dissident (Sebring), Hallowed Crown (Street Sense), Rubick (Encosta De Lago), Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor), Toronado (High Chaparral) and Wandjina (Snitzel).

Newgate Farm will have a draft of 27 yearlings at the Classic Sale backed by offspring of their first crop stallions Deep Field, Dissident and Wandjina.

Among Dissident’s progeny consigned by Newgate Farm is a half-sister to the Chris Meagher-trained Group Two winner Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All), catalogued as Lot 33, and a Dissident half-sister to dual Group One winner Zipping (Danehill). She will be offered as Lot 125.

“We are happy to back Inglis’s move to Warwick Farm all the way and we will have our biggest and certainly our best quality draft we’ve ever taken to a Classic sale next year,” Newgate general manager Bruce Slade said.

“We have a big representation from all three of our first crops stallions at the Inglis Classic sale. We know the key for our young horses is to get them into the best stables in Australia and we are very thankful Inglis has taken all three horses very seriously and putting them in front of the best trainers and bloodstock agents in Australasia.”

The Hunter Valley-based breeding operation also has two yearlings in its draft, who were purchased from the weanling session of Inglis’s The Chairman’s Sale earlier this year for $150,000 each, demonstrating Newgate Farm’s belief in the depth of the market.

The pinhooked yearlings are Lot 408, a colt by Fastnet Rock, and a Wandjina colt, who is catalogued as Lot 521.

“You will note we have two yearlings we purchased from the foal sale for $150,000 and $120,000 in the sale, which shows how confident we are that Inglis are going to make it a success,” Slade said.

Darley-based first crop stallion Hallowed Crown, who won the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), will be represented by a half-sister to dual Group One-winning sprinter and fellow first crop sire Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), who is consigned by Murrulla Stud as Lot 30.

The former James Cummings-trained Hallowed Crown also has a half-brother to recent VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Ace High (High Chaparral) on offer at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He is being consigned by Barador Stud as Lot 329.

The Kris Lees-trained three-year-old filly Yulong Xingsheng (I Am Invincible), who was sold for $55,000 at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and won the Twilight Glow Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Sandown Hillside on Saturday, has a half-sister by Turffontein (Johannesburg) catalogued in the 2018 sale. She will be offered as Lot 308 by breeder and vendor Mane Lodge.

Recent graduates of the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale include this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain), Group One winners Yankee Rose (All American), who was sold by Widden Stud, I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) and Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning sprinter Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

Arrowfield Stud (33), Vinery Stud (28), Bhima Thoroughbreds (24), Sledmere Stud (23), and Kitchwin Hills (22) will also have large drafts at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale next year.

Darby Racing to return to Classic in search of future star

Syndicator Darby Racing has enjoyed tremendous success buying from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in recent years, securing the Gary Portelli-trained She Will Reign for $20,000 in 2016 and dual Group One winner Yankee Rose for $10,000 in 2015.

This year Scott Darby purchased exciting two-year-old filly Setsuna (Choisir) for $55,000 after she was passed in at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained juvenile has won two of her three starts, taking out the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington on 7 November at her most recent run.

Darby told ANZ Bloodstock News his team would be on the grounds at Riverside Stables next year in a bid to find their next racecourse star.

He said the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale presented plenty of options at prices that provided value for syndicators and owners.

“It really is a great value sale … and there are always plenty of horses there who suit us,” Darby said.

“She Will Reign, Yankee Rose and Setsuna are fillies, and they are never as well considered as the colts because there is a greater spectrum of buyers for those horses.

“A filly like Setsuna, for example, wasn’t the biggest filly substance wise but she looked racy and the mother went early who had also thrown a Gimcrack winner in WA.

“She wasn’t overly big, but very athletic and everything that we look for as a syndicator because you don’t want to waiting a long time to get them to the races.”

Setsuna’s half-brother by So You Think (High Chaparral) will be offered by Manx Park, who sold the Choisir (Danehill Dancer) filly to Darby Racing this year, as Lot 499.

This year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale averaged $71,342, with a

median of $55,000 and a top price of $400,000 for a Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) colt who was purchased by Carmel Size.

“It is going to get harder for us because once upon a time the average was $35,000 and they are talking that it could rise to $90,000 next year,” Darby said.

“The market is very strong right around the world, so I can’t see why the sale won’t at least hold its own, if not have an increase because the sale is at the new complex and it has always produced a good horse.

“The top price used to be $200,000 and now that has well and truly be exceeded and vendors are taking some of their better horses to the Classic sale as a result.”

Bigger catalogue for Classic’s Riverside welcome

Inglis national bloodstock manager Jonathan D’Arcy told ANZ Bloodstock News the launch of the Riverside Stables at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale was an exciting time for the company.

Inglis will offer 600 yearlings in book one and 200 yearlings in book two of the Classic Yearling Sale, with the new facilities at Warwick Farm allowing the auction house to increase the size of the catalogue.

“We are really looking forward to it. While the last Easter sale at Newmarket was historic and very successful, as soon as the gavel dropped on the last horse our focus has been on Warwick Farm and producing the best sales complex we can,” D’Arcy said.

“Everyone who visits comes away really impressed. We look forward to welcoming all our clients, buyers and sellers, in February and I think it is going to be a be a great experience for everyone.

“It has a great area to parade horses and has a tremendous auditorium to sell horses in. We have added a lot of new facilities for clients who I think will really appreciate them as well.”

D’Arcy said the the increased capacity at the Riverside Stables complex had allowed Inglis to expand the size and quality of its Classic catalogue in 2018.

“We had 600 boxes at Newmarket and we catalogued 600 for Classic in 2017 but we have over 800 boxes at Riverside, so we have catalogued 600 in book one and 200 in book two,” he said.

“We had 2,000 entries, which is up from 1.400 last year, which is phenomenal and shows the success of the Classic sale over the last couple of years.

“It is a sale that suits so many clients and horses. We have clients who have always sold everything at Classic and don’t go to any other sale, but we also have the leading studs in the country also supporting the sale.”

The Inglis Classic Yearling Sale will start on Saturday night, 10 February, with Lot 1 to Lot 120 offered including a 63-lot Gold Riband session following Classic race day at Warwick Farm.

“We are delighted with the quality of the catalogue that has the leading sires represented like Snitzel and Fastnet Rock, I Am Invincible, but the success story of Classic for many years has been how it has launched the careers of so many young stallions,” D’Arcy said.

“Horses like I Am A Star, In Her Time have come through this sale and we’ve had stallions like Brazen Beau and I Am Invincible himself sold here. There is a horse there for every buyer.”

Impending to miss Winterbottom

Trainer James Cummings yesterday ruled the one-time Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Impending (Lonhro) out of the Perth feature sprint race, instead sending the four-year-old for a spell. The decision not to send the Group One winner to Perth after two spring runs on the eastern seaboard has seen local sprinter State Solicitor (Nicconi) promoted to favourite for the Winterbottom Stakes. Impending, who ran third in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m), won the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) during the winter and is expected to return for the autumn carnival.

Kingston Town sole goal for It’s SomewhatIt’s Somewhat (Dynaformer), who ran third in the Emirates Stakes (Mackinnon Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) last start, will still be heading to Perth but for just the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m). Trainer James Cummings said the seven-year-old gelding would bypass Saturday’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ascot and be saved for the Kingston Town Classic two weeks later. Three-year-old stablemate Gaulois (Street Cry), who finished eighth in the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Flemington, will tackle the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) on Saturday.

Lane to ride UlmannDamian Lane will maintain his association with Ulmann (Sebring), one of two Darren Weir-trained horses being aimed at the Railway Stakes and Kingston Town Classic in Perth. Lane has ridden the six-year-old at his past three starts, which includes a victory in the Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and last start when fourth in the Chatham Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on 9 November. Lane, who hails from Western Australia, has enjoyed a successful spring and is firmly entrenched in the top echelon of jockeys in Victoria. “It’s good to go back,” Lane said. “It’s good racing and good prize money. I’ll be riding there the next three Saturdays.” Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) will be Weir’s other runner during the Perth summer carnival. Material Man to back upMyalup-based trainer Justin Warwick has confirmed that he intends to run Material Man (Vital Equine) in the Railway Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. The six-year-old gelding, who took out the Northam Cup (Listed, 1600m) at his penultimate start, ran a close fourth in the R J Peters Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) at Ascot two days ago behind surprise winner Properantes (Danehill Express). Warwick was pleased with Material Man’s performance and is keen to tackle this weekend’s Group One feature.

Strong book for WhyteHong Kong-based jockey Douglas Whyte is set to have a strong book of rides at Ascot on Saturday. Whyte, who was champion jockey in Hong Kong for 13 consecutive seasons from 2001, has been booked to ride the WA Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) winner Art Series (Sebring) in the WA Guineas, while he has also been confirmed as the rider of the Lindsey Smith-trained Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt), who will bid to defend his Railway Stakes title this weekend.

Morning Briefing

Gangemi to have two in WinterbottomTrainer Chris Gangemi is expected to have two runners in the Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot on Saturday week. Multiple Group Three-winning sprinter Rock Magic (Redoute’s Choice), who ran sixth in the Darley Classic at his last start, was due to return to Perth from a Melbourne campaign last night, while the consistent Durendal (Medaglia d’Oro) will also head to the $1,000,000 sprint on 2 December following his close-up third in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on Saturday.

Mr Garcia to have first start for WeirEuropean import Mr Garcia (Paco Boy), who was a taking winner over 1800 metres at Flemington on 9 November for leading German trainer Andreas Wohler, will make his debut for premier Melbourne trainer Darren Weir in the Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2200m) on Saturday. “At this stage we are planning to run next Saturday,” Jamie Lovett, of owners Australian Bloodstock, told Racing.com. “By all reports the horse has come through his Flemington win in good order and if the stable are happy with him this week, the Ballarat Cup looks a good option for him.”

Clockwise Classic to attract strong nominationsThe $200,000 Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic (1000m) at Ballarat on Saturday is likely to attract a strong set of nominations today. Among the runners expected to be nominated for the sprint are the Darren Weir-trained Farthing Wood (Hinchinbrook) and Native Soldier (Sepoy), Lindsay Park could hand an entry to Speedy Kitty (Exceed And Excel), while the Lloyd Kennewell-trained La Pomme De Pin (I Am Invincible), a close second to subsequent Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Long Leaf (Fastnet Rock) on debut, is also likely to be nominated.

Whypeeo to be nominated for Sydney and BrisbaneTrainer Toby Edmonds will give promising three-year-old Whypeeo (I Am Invincible) a nomination for both Rosehill and Doomben this weekend. The gelding, who is being prepared for the Magic Millions race day in January, was due to resume from a break at Doomben on Saturday but was a late scratching due to rain-affected conditions. "Our aim was always going to be the Magic Millions carnival. At this stage Whypeeo is being set for the Magic Millions Guineas over 1400 metres but a back-up plan is the Magic Millions Sprint," Edmonds said.

Bright future for The Taj MahalJockey Ben Melham is predicting a bright future for Zipping Classic (Gr 2, 2400m) winner The Taj Mahal (Galileo), who is likely to be aimed at races such as The BMW (registered as H E Tancred Stakes) (Gr 1, 2400m) in Sydney during the autumn. “He is a very tough horse, there’s not many horses out there that can pick up in a race and sustain a gallop for that period of time and that is his asset,” Melham told RSN. “What I was also impressed with was he was so strong on the line and even a furlong after the line, still holding the same tempo as he was up the straight so he’s an incredibly tough horse.”

Williams the decision makerSix-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winning owner Lloyd Williams has stated in a radio interview that he is the head trainer at his Macedon Lodge property. Liam Howley is set to replace Robert Hickmott as Williams’ retained trainer, but the leading owner said he is the one who makes the key decisions. "You're talking to the head trainer here," Williams told Sky Sports Radio. "There's always a lot of controversy who trains the horses. The blueprint emanates right here. I'm chairman and chief executive. I decide how the horses will work and how we will feed them and all those sorts of things and I have people up there who execute it. That is what happens."

Plans outlined for All Too HuiyingRosehill-based trainer Gary Moore has outlined plans for last start Seppelt Wines Stakes

(Listed, 1800m) winner All Too Huiying (All Too Hard). Moore will give the colt one run heading into the Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) in January ahead of an ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) campaign. "I don't think it will be an issue getting to 2000 because he lobs along just off the bit, very much European-style," Moore said. "I don't think the trip will worry him but as a three-year-old is he seasoned enough? Winning (the Seppelt) at Flemington was a highlight of my training career and I'm expecting great things from him in 2018."

The Quarterback’s career in the balance

The results of tests at the University Of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic will determine the racing future of The Quarterback (Street Boss), after the Group One winner was found to have suffered an exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) at his last two starts. Trainer Robbie Griffiths said The Quarterback would undergo a full bone scan as well as tests on his heart and lungs during this week. "If there is some possibility that he can return that will be discussed once that information comes back," Griffiths said. "But he won't see a racetrack again unless he trials outstanding or the test are negative.”

Mikimoto off to paddockLeading West Australian owner Bob Peters has decided to send the talented three-year-old filly Mikimoto (Sebring) for a spell. The daughter of Sebring (More Than Ready) lost her unbeaten record when beaten around a neck into third in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes at Ascot yesterday. Peters confirmed she will not back up in the WA Guineas this weekend, nor tackle the Kingston Town Classic next month.

Chocolate Holic spelledCo-trainer Grant Williams revealed yesterday that Chocolate Holic (Blackfriars) has been spelled and will miss the upcoming Group One features in Perth. The dual Listed-winning five-year-old, who was being aimed at the Railway Stakes this weekend, had suffered a minor setback earlier this month and will head to the paddock rather than Saturday’s $1,000,000 feature at Ascot.

Walker to bounce back from pneumoniaJockey Michael Walker is planning to return at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday after he was stood down by medical staff at the weekend as he was suffering from the effects of pneumonia. Walker was stood down following his winning ride aboard Fanatic (Shocking) in the Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m). “I’ve got some really good rides at Ballarat next Saturday for the Cup meeting and I want to make sure I’m 100 per cent healthy,” Walker told Racing.com. “This pneumonia has knocked me around so I’ll be taking it easy for the next couple of days and then go see the doc on Tuesday. “With some good rest I’m confident I’ll be right for Wednesday.”

Inquiry opened into Sadler’s alleged conductTrainer John Sadler will face an inquiry relating to his conduct after he was alleged to have directed an outburst at Racing Victoria stewards at Sandown Hillside. Sadler, whose horse Observational (Galileo) was scratched from the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) with a TC02 reading marginally over the threshold, is alleged to have threatened both chief steward Terry Bailey and deputy Robert Cram in the stewards room prior to race three.

McGillivray gets hearing dateJockey Matt McGillivray will have an appeal against a careless riding suspension heard nearly eight months after the penalty was handed down. It has again highlighted long delays in hearing appeals at the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal which replaced the previous appeals system. McGillivray was originally suspended for causing interference

in a race in June. He initially sought an internal review and when that failed he appealed to QCAT. "In NSW and Victoria careless riding appeals are heard very quickly so everyone knows where they stand. Maybe, it is time to adopt their systems here," McGillivray’s lawyer Matt Tutt said.

New Zealand

Heni relishes Riccarton back upA quick turnaround proved no barrier for seven-year-old mare Heni (Towkay) who scored over 1400 metres at Riccarton on Saturday. The Mike Breslin-trained mare was backing up after an impressive victory in the Canterbury Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) last Wednesday. “She jumped out and settled well, which I knew she would,” jockey Danielle Hirini said. “She ran home beautifully and won well. She is a beautiful mare and deserved that big race on Wednesday. I’ve been looking forward to riding her as I had the booking weeks in advance. She’s very versatile and can go on anything and this place is just like another home away from home for her.”

Derby target for DemonetizationPukekohe-based trainer Nigel Tiley is planning a tilt at the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) with Demonetization (All Too Hard), after the colt preserved his unbeaten record with a game victory over 1400 metres at Tauranga on Saturday afternoon. “He won very well and he’s got a great attitude,” Tiley said. “He’s definitely going to stay and the Derby is the race to look at. He’s always showed me a lot. He’s a very casual horse and so laid back, he’s saves it all for race day.”

Natuzzi showing no signs of slowing downNine-year-old Natuzzi (Coats Choice) bounced back to winning form at Tauranga on Saturday. The Paul Richards-trained gelding, who was fifth in the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m) first up, beat Royal Success (Savabeel) by a head over 1400 metres. “He went nicely at Rotorua when he ran home well so I knew he would take plenty of benefit from that run,” he said. “He has been keen in his work so we went into Saturday confident he would go well. He finished the race off strongly and has pulled up well afterwards.”

Stakes aim for MahaloThe improving five-year-old mare Mahalo (Darci Brahma) is likely to have her sights raised in the coming weeks after scoring a determined victory over 1200 metres at Tauranga on Saturday. “We’ve always held her in high regard and we felt this season would see her at her best,” said co-trainer Graeme Richardson. “As a rule, I don’t often race horses out of their grade, but we have been looking at tackling some of the good sprint races around Christmas time with her, so she had to show us she was up to it.”

Third Grade One winner for HarbingerPersian Knight (3 c ex Orient Charm by Sunday Silence) prevailed narrowly in the Mile Championship (Gr 1, 1600m) at Kyoto in Japan yesterday to provide Harbinger (Dansili) with his third Grade One winner. The Yasutoshi Ikee-trained colt showed a determined attitude to beat Air Spinel (King Kamehameha) by a nose under jockey Mirco Demuro, with Sungrazer (Deep Impact) a further half a length behind in third place. Harbinger has sired seven stakes winners in total and stood for a fee of ¥3,500,000 at Shadai Stallion Station this year. Click here to view the race replay.

Persian Knight overcomes wide drawWinning rider Mirco Demuro was impressed with the performance of three-year-old Persian Knight in overcoming the widest draw in barrier 18 to win yesterday’s Mile Championship at Kyoto. “We were a little worried about the farthest draw but he always breaks well so we weren’t that concerned,” Demuro said. “The colt was responding really well especially around the third corner. Being still a three-year-old, he seemed a bit nervous entering the lane but ran really well to the wire. He’s a great horse.”

26 for MujahidThe promising Close Your Eyes (2 f ex Too In Love by Galileo) preserved her unbeaten record when landing the Premio Criterium Femminile (Listed, 1500m) in Rome yesterday to provide Mujahid

(Danzig) with his 26th stakes winner. The filly, who won on her debut over the same course and distance in September, beat Nonna Gianna (Havana Gold) by a neck under Dario Vargiu, with Field Of Roses (Epaulette) a further length and a half behind in third. Mujahid’s progeny are headed by Group One winners Danleigh and Cleo Fan.

267 for GalileoThe Australian-bred Kinaan (5 g ex Dazzledar by Zamindar) won the Kenilworth Cup (Listed, 3200m) at Kenilworth in South Africa on Saturday to provide Coolmore stallion Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) with his 267th stakes winner. The Mike De Kock-trained five-year-old beat Master’s Eye (Jet Master) by a length and three quarters under Callan Murray, with Woodland’s Forest (Elusive Fort) a further half a length behind in third. Galileo will stand for a private fee again at Coolmore Stud next year.

Solid results across 12 days at KeenelandCumulative sales for the 12-day Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale grossed US$202,021,700 for 2,424 horses, dipping 6.13 per cent compared with last year's 13-day total of US$215,213,000 for 2,653 horses. The average price of US$83,342 rose 2.74 per cent from US$81,121 in 2016. The median increased 22 per cent, from US$25,000 last year to US$30,500. The final session on Saturday saw Gold Indy (A. P. Indy), catalogued as Hip 3988, and a weanling colt by Tapiture (Tapit), catalogued as Hip 4055, finish as joint top lots when selling for US$35,000.

Elliston pleased with November resultsBob Elliston, Keeneland's vice president of racing and sales, was pleased with the overall results of the November Breeding Stock Sale, which saw the multiple Grade One-winning mare Stellar Wind (Curlin) sell for a sale-topping US$6,000,000 in session one. “The buoyant market we experienced in September flowed throughout this November Sale," Elliston said. "Buyers are positive about the economy and the horse industry, and they are enthusiastic to invest, often more than originally budgeted, in that outstanding individual.” Click here to view the sale results.

Werther (Tavistock) enhanced his status as Hong Kong’s ten-furlong standout with a battling victory in the Jockey

Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m) at Sha Tin yesterday.Next month’s HK$25,000,000 Hong Kong

Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at the course and distance is all that stands between the six-year-old and a career sweep of Hong Kong’s premier 2000 metre contests. Werther has already sealed wins in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m), QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), and this afternoon’s triumph was just the lead-up to Hong Kong’s richest race connections had been hoping for.

“He’s exactly where we want him to be, there are exciting times ahead,” said winning jockey Tommy Berry.

Werther had to call on his champion’s grit in the closing stages to outpoint runner-up Time Warp (Archipenko) by a neck. The New Zealand-bred was blowing hard when he came back to the winner’s arch, but emphasised his wellbeing with a brash kick at the air as he made his exit.

“That was a cracking good run considering it was his second run this season,” said trainer John Moore, who was registering a fifth success

in the race. “His fitness was really tested and he will improve for this run.

“The speed that Harbour Master went up front today really tested his fitness level, which wasn’t 100 percent. We got away with it and now we go to the Hong Kong Cup. He’ll come away from this race in better fettle for that grand final.”

Werther settled fourth, nine lengths behind his bounding stablemate Harbour Master (Mizzen Mast), and had to work to make ground into the final turn. Time Warp, positioned second under Joao Moreira, kicked past the fading leader with 400 metres to race, as Berry got tough in pursuit on the former Hong Kong Horse of the Year.

The Tavistock (Montjeu) gelding responded to Berry’s drive, and, despite Time Warp rolling out towards Werther in the run to the line, the bay kept on stoutly to earn the spoils in a time of 2:01.52.

“He’s not fully fit and he’s beaten them all there carrying a five-pound penalty, so that gives us confidence for three weeks’ time,” Moore said.

Intermittent rainfall over the weekend meant that there was a slight cushion in the Sha Tin turf and Berry believed that was beneficial to

the horse, whose best ever performance remains a wet track victory in the 2016 QEII Cup.

“He’s really come on since his first run when we thought he’d a finish a bit closer than he did, and I think the cut in the track today really suited him,” Berry said.

“I said before today that he’ll be spot on for December and I think that showed. He just ran out of gas a bit the last 100 metres and Joao took me off my course a little bit where he lost his balance. All in all he’s going great and I’m looking forward to December with him.

“There’s probably another 10 percent to come, but even with the race being run the way it was, it sort of made us make up a fair bit before the corner, which probably took a bit of dash out of him as well,” Berry continued.

“In a normally-run race, he probably would have been able to sit a little bit longer and would have shown a better turn-of-foot. Three or four things went against him today and he still got the job done. The two main reasons why he didn’t pull away from them was that he was running out of condition and he was taken off his course a bit.”

Moreira was pleased with second-placed Time Warp.

“It was a lovely run,” the champion jockey said. “The leader just went a bit too fast, so I was happy to sit behind him. And when I went past, I was left in front for quite some time. I was beaten in the last 100 metres. I was beaten by a good horse, and I was very pleased with my horse’s run.”

Time Warp finished second in the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) at his last start. Nassa, the horse that pipped him that time, ran third, a further length and a half back.

“I had a lovely run, it was a hot speed but I followed Time Warp everywhere,” jockey Chad Schofield said of the Tony Millard-trained runner. “Werther whipped around very quickly and put himself into the race a long way out, I got my run at the top of the straight and my bloke was brave.”

The Tony Cruz-trained Gold Mount (Excellent Art) ran on strongly from deep for fourth, having been checked at the turn into the stretch. The 2016 Royal Ascot winner clocked a race-fastest closing 400 metres of 22.62 seconds.

Seasons Bloom enters Hong Kong Mile picture

Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) gave the established order a shake with a signal triumph in the Jockey Club Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Sha Tin yesterday afternoon.

Danny Shum’s charge was a leading player in last season’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series and took today’s step up to open company with aplomb under Joao Moreira. The gelding steamed past the dual Group One winner Helene Paragon (Polan) for a half-length success and is now a leading candidate for the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on 10 December.

“He’s a very nice horse and I really think he’s going to be right there with them on the big day,” said Moreira, whose previous win in the race came atop Able Friend (Shamardal) in 2014.

Seasons Bloom sprinted through a closing 400 metres surge, timed at a race-fastest 22.55 seconds. The result looked solid, with another protagonist from last season’s four-year-old crop, the in-form Beauty Generation (Road To Rock), a length back in third, and last year’s Hong Kong Mile hero Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) a further head away in fourth. Helene Paragon and Beauty Only shouldered 5lb Group One penalties; the winning time was 1:34.13.

“Based on what he’s done today, you would think he’d be able to run well in the Hong Kong Mile next time because he beat some of the best horses in Hong Kong today, and he had to make it tough, being exposed three wide,” Moreira said.

“Danny left the tactics in my hands; he didn’t give me specific instruction, I was happy to help him to get going because he doesn’t have much early speed. I was able to cross a few horses and get to a position three off the fence, obviously it wasn’t ideal but at least he had cover and I got him to relax in a position just better than midfield.

“Once we straightened up, I held my nerve a little bit and he used pretty much everything he had in the last furlong, and he gave me plenty. Danny gave him a break and that paid off today.”

Seasons Bloom, returned the 3.7 joint-favourite with Beauty Only, had not raced since a fine second to Beauty Generation in the Celebration Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) on 1 October. That followed a first-up win in a Class One handicap over 1200 metres on the season’s opening day.

“I did think a little break would help the horse be more successful into the big races, so I’m happy the owner supported my decision,” Shum said, after welcoming his first Jockey Club Mile victor.

“He’s not the biggest horse, so I’ll try to keep him fresh and happy now. He has a big heart and I think he’ll run a good race in December – we’ll try our best.”

Helene Paragon battled to a narrow lead over stablemate Beauty Generation with 100 metres to race but had no answer to Seasons Bloom’s late swoop.

“As I said to everyone before he ran, he was definitely going to need the run,” Helene Paragon’s jockey Tommy Berry said. “I think

that showed today. He peaked at about the 100 (metres), he had a decent blow when he pulled up so I’m very excited for December now.”

Beauty Generation, third to Seasons Bloom’s second in last term’s Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m), continued the fine form that had already snared Group Three and Group Two handicap wins this season.

“He was very honest, he ran well. He got bumped at the 600 metres but he still fought back. That was good,” rider Derek Leung said.

Mr Stunning scores decisive Jockey Club Sprint win

Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) stamped himself as the horse to beat in next month’s Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) with a comfortable victory in the traditional local lead-up, the Jockey Club Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

In a sign of the strength of reigning Champion Trainer John Size’s sprinting stock, Mr Stunning, under Nash Rawiller, led home a 1-2-3-5 for the stable. Amazing Kids (Falkirk) and D B Pin (Darci Brahma) fought out second, a length and a half behind the winner, while Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice) made up ground from last to finish fifth.

“They’ve all run very pleasingly,” Size said. “Mr Stunning seemed to dominate today, but it all depends on the way the race is run in three weeks. That race could be run at a different tempo, which could give us a different result. Mr Stunning still has to produce it again in three weeks, but if he pulls up well, he should be able to repeat the run.

“This preparation, though, he has done everything perfectly. He’s obviously a nice horse to train, he’s relatively straightforward and similarly, on race day, he’s pretty good for the jockeys too.”

In what was a messy affair, Peniaphobia (Dandy Man) controlled the tempo early under Matthew Chadwick. However, he slowed the pace considerably at the 600 metres, causing the field to bunch and placing 2.4 favourite Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) in an awkward position on the inside of horses near the rear.

“It was the first time I had the chance to sit on him,” Doleuze said. “I’m very pleased with his performance. I think that if he can produce a similar run in the internationals, he will be in the finish.”

Mr Stunning stopped the clock in 1:09.33, the slowest Jockey Club Sprint win since the race was upped to 1200 metres in 2006.

Selected runners for all four of the 10 December Hong Kong International Races – the Hong Kong Cup , Hong Kong Mile, Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) and the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) – will be announced on Wednesday.

For Lucky Bubbles, a clear run was not forthcoming at any point in the stretch and he went to the line ninth of the 10 runners but hard-held, almost five lengths from Mr Stunning. It was a run reminiscent of Aerovelocity’s (Pins) last-placed finish in the same race in 2014; a start later, he won the Hong Kong Sprint.

“Disaster,” jockey Zac Purton stated succinctly.

One horse not affected by the race’s changing complexion on the circle, though, was Mr Stunning, with Rawiller saying the five-year-old was able to adapt to the notable change in tempo.

“He’s an absolute star, he’s so push-button,” Rawiller said. “Today, he jumped first out of the gates and I dropped my hands on his neck and he just came straight back under me. He was a dream to ride throughout the run. Even when the pace slowed up dramatically, it probably put the whole race out of whack, but he’s nimble on his feet and he was able to capitalise on that.

“I was able to roll forward into the race and he put it beyond doubt at the 300 metres, he was travelling very comfortably and it was just a matter of letting him go to win the race.”

Size, who won the 2008 Jockey Club Sprint with Enthused (Centaine), has only had one previous HKIR winner from 37 starters. That was Glorious Days (Hussonet), who won the Hong Kong Mile first-up in 2013.

However, Rawiller is confident that the nine-time Champion Trainer can win his first Hong Kong Sprint on 10 December.

“Mr Size is a master at dealing with these types of horses,” Rawiller said. “There are going to be horses around him that will improve, just as he will, but I think he’s going to be the one to beat, that’s for sure.”

Amazing Kids made up good ground to finish second, although Prebble believed he was fortunate to hold the runner-up spot.

“He ran super,” Prebble said. “He gave me a good kick, but the winner is just too good. He held on for a nice second, but he was probably lucky to run second – the third horse should have beaten him home.”

That third horse was last season’s Most Improved Horse D B Pin, who put himself forward as a potential Hong Kong Sprint candidate with the best effort of his career.
