People wondering why the chapter Secretary has not been seen and only infrequently heard from since late April would have to look as far South as the “Hole-in-the-Wall” Gang hideout, and farther East than the where the Dalton gang met their demise. Since shortly after

announcing his retirement, Gordy took off on a road trip of (slightly epic) proportions. No, he wasn’t driving his Spider or the Junior Z, claiming it had something to do with “space limitations.” In Desde-mona, his aptly-named silver Subaru rocket ship, he set off to visit family, National Parks, and some widely-dispersed Alfisti.

First stop – Walla Walla (the town so nice, they named it twice) to bottle wine for/with a friend and to meet one of the newest (and as

yet, unannounced) members of NWARC, Larry Duthie. Larry has a Series III Spider purchased off e-bay that he has ready to drive to the California Convention.

The luggage compartment packed freshly-bottled Tamarack Cellars Firehouse Red, the next stop was Elko, Nevada, to party with silver miners and visit a seldom-seen cousin. Then on to Great Basin National Park, a recent addition and one of the least-visited in

the system; and then Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Capitol Reef. Camera woes prevent sharing pictures of those Parks and Monuments, but a brief visit to Grand Junction, Colorado resulted in a new Nikon in his hands. South to Durango to visit old friend, Richard Ballantine who provided over-night accommodations next to his TZ and GTV, and just up the hill from his newly acquired Touring Spider. On to Natural Bridges and Arches before heading East back to Colorado National Monument and a longer

visit with eldest brother, Bill and his family in Grand Junction. Continu-ing East, the next stop was Pueblo, Colorado, to assist and recruit a new AROC member who had encountered “strange noises” in her Series IV Spider. After referring her to some Front Range Alfisti, the compass needle continued to point East after a brief stop at Bent’s Old Fort and into Kansas, to seek out Wyatt Earp’s and Doc Holiday’s haunts around Dodge City. A lengthy visit with brother, Weldon in SE Kansas, not too

far from Coffeyville, where the Dalton Gang were gunned down, re-sulted in a good old fashioned “barn-raising”, actually just a 24’ x 30’ garage, to replace a nephew’s structure victimized by vandals’ arson.

Then across Missouri and into Tennessee where he met up with (in)famous Alfa artiste Jerry Quinlisk and his wife, Nancy, before heading back through Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado; this time visiting Rocky

Mountain and Dinosaur National Parks; and through Flaming Gorge in Utah. At that time it was time to “put the pedal to the metal” and hit the

Interstate highways North and West back home. By the time this is printed in the Iniezione and read, Desdemona will have had two oil changes, new rear brakes, windshield rock chips repair (x3) and covered over 6500 miles in at least ten states, and our erstwhile Secretary will happily be at home, getting ready for another road trip…this time driving

President’s Column By Merril Gordon

Sixth and last inning, Dillon’s having a good game pitching a shutout plus hitting the ball

every time he was at bat including a triple, and then the other team finally scores a run. ….Ooops, this is supposed to be my presi-dent’s article to the Iniezione, not an e-mail to my Mom.

Did I tell you I’m way over budget on my

GTV6 driveline upgrade but enjoying every bit of it? A 3.0L rebuild using heads sourced from Ron Calkins who sourced them from John Van Rensberg, who sourced them from South Africa. They’ve been rebuilt but retain flowed porting, larger valves and livelier cams. I’m thinking the offset bushings in the

small end of the connecting rods were a South African idea too. Along with S-pistons the compression bumps up to just short of 10.5 to 1. JVR had a 164 block floating around his house (was probably taking up space in his bathroom) that has the piston oil squirters update. That became the founda-

tion for those heads. The near stock three liter I had in my GTV6 had the Bosch L-

Jetronic fuel injection already maxed out with the displacement upgrade from 2.5L to 3.0L so I knew it wouldn’t be enough for this hot-rodded Alfa motor. So a custom FI will

go in which includes ignition control. That’s going to be a challenge. Oh, did I say I’m behind schedule? Something about assistant coaching Little League baseball. Might have to have some sick days here shortly to get caught up. Gita e’ Corsa will be here before you know it and the

National Convention right after.

A buddy of mine, Lior Ungar, is Is-raeli and now a US citizen. He went on spring break recently to his

home country before it got too hot there. Does anyone ever notice the news reports from that region al-

ways showing dry dusty areas and everything looking the color of tan dirt? Well, it’s not always that way, at least not early in the year from the pictures he showed me. And remember, this country borders the

Mediterranean Sea so can anyone say beach? And for Lior he’s been a sailing enthusiast since childhood so he’s even spent quite a bit of

time a ways off the beach. Well on this visit his brother let him use his 2001 Alfa Romeo 159 for the whole week.

Wasn’t this car about the same size as a 164? I ought to look it up but it’s I’ll take Lior’s word for it. This car has the 2.2L

engine with a Magneti-Marelli electro hydraulic solenoid con-trolled manual transmission. As far as Lior was concerned the suspension was perfect, i.e. not too stiff or too soft, but compli-ant and well suited for the scenic but bumpy “B” roads he drove on his sightseeing adventures. He took drives up into

the Giboa and other mountains where corners were tight, switchbacks common and the views spectacular.

Any engine of modest displacement in a car of this weight leads to the feeling of modest torque at low revs and the tach had to be swung around to the higher reaches to achieve reasonable power The FWD con-figuration showed its limitations as it exhibited torque steer from the first moment one drives the car. A common distinction of front drivers. He said the interior was quite plush and the seats comfortable.

This early version of the car had this Magneti-Marelli solenoid operated gearbox (no torque converter) with steering wheel paddle shifters plus a lever on the console. Lior found that shifting with the paddles produced a one second delay that was slow and annoying and it was much worse if he left it in Drive. Full Auto was also slow to shift and in very slow commuting traffic where the speed is down in the 5-25Kph range the transmission would drop power, change gears, then reapply power, and

repeat as it hunted around for the best desired combination. Was enough to make one seasick according to our driver. Lior reverted to using the lever on the console where shifts were immediate and toler-able. By far the worst feature of the car. After about eight months Alfa changed over to a ZF transmission that proved to be much more effec-tive. Luckily manuals were available and appear to be the best choice for these and any Alfas in my view. Always nice to have some insight

regarding Alfas we don’t get over here. Thanks Lior.

Well summer is almost here and I’m looking forward to seeing all sorts of Alfisti at the various venues we have going on this year.

Ciao

Our June meeting has us back at Lombardi’s Cucina in Issaquah. Along with a

good meal, we can enjoy a meeting of Alfisti and a special guest speaker. This

month, our member, Bob Gerttula will share tales of the wonderful road rally

that he and his wife went on during April this year. They wandered roads in

British Columbia, Canada, joining a number of other Alfa Romeos and a few

NWARC members from the Vancouver BC area.

Bob and his wife drove their nice blue MGB so we’ll have to ask him why they

didn’t take their Alfa Romeo. He’ll share photos from the road showing the

mountains, rivers, and even the cool little ferry crossing. With nearly 80 cars

involved, they didn’t all fit on the ferry at once. You’ll get a chance to ask him

about the event organizers and the cool Yellow or Red Card process. It was a

well organized event that included a chase vehicle for support in the case any

cars had troubles… not really an issue on an Alfa event.

When: Tuesday June 11th 6:30— 9:00 PM meeting

Where: Lombardi’s Cucina 695 NW Gilman Blvd, Issaquah, WA 98027

The rally was known as the 5th Annual Hagerty Spring Thaw Adventure. Its a

3-day driving adventure for pre-1979 touring and sports cars. If you have an

interesting or unique car that is a little newer, they’ll probably let you join as

well. This is for those who enjoy spirited driving on some of the most challeng-

ing and beautiful roads while affording good friendships and amazing views..

Concours cars are more than welcome, but they also encourage those less-than

-mint, hard-driven, budget classics to take part. Enthusiasm for driving old, un-

reliable cars counts more than anything! There is nothing competitive about

this event… just a fun run through the scenic mountain twisties. :)

Keith Martin has added another Alfa to his garage. He talked with Andrew Watry, over the years and musing about getting a Berlina or a Super. Keith considered nearly a dozen Supers, ranging in condition from sorry to stupen-

dous, in prices from $6,000 to $30,000. As Keith settled on the final few, An-

drew proved invaluable not just for his knowledge of the cars in general, but even more for his insights into the Alfa community. The car has the typical Cali-fornia boy-racer upgrades: 1750 engine, 2-liter cam, later transmission, 4.1 LSD, performance suspension including springs, shocks, later-model front-spindle assembly and more. Though not a concours car, after a couple of quick rounds of pleasant negotiations, the car was mine. I paid more than $20,000 but less than $25,000, a price that Andrew felt was very fair for both of

us. (Even someone who publishes a Price Guide needs to check with the real world now and then. It’s a great car. The performance springs provide an aggressive stance, the lack of the stock air cleaner on the Dellortos mean their roarty sound fills the cockpit, the freshened suspension allows the car to stay flat and track well in the corners, and the 4.1 coupled with the 1750 provide for copious torque at low speeds as well as comfort-able cruising. All of us have bought cars sight-unseen, and my success rate of expectations meeting reality is about 40%. I would put this car solidly into the "win" column – It was everything I hoped for and then some. As we have said many

times in SCM, judge the seller of the car you are buying as much as you judge the car.

Once again, Father’s Day will have a wonderful car show option. I know, some people may head to Forest Grove, Oregon for the large annual Microcar Show. There is almost always the one Alfa Romeo, hid-den under a tiny Lloyd. (See picture to

the right) There is also the other group that will migrate north to attend the French & Italian Car Show hosted by the noted Alfista, Fritz Duernburger. This show is on the grass at Waterfront Park in the Lonsdale area of North Vancouver. A great show and this year, a couple

NWARC members will be there.

The Exotics at Redmond Town Center always draw out such wonderful cars in a

great setting allowing people to see and hear the cars up close and casual. One of the nice weekends in May, Dave Smith brought out one of his vintage black Alfa

Romeos while another local brought out a new black 8cCompetizione and parked them for all to see.

Alfa News

Our fourth annual Viva Italia Car & Motorcycle show will be held on July 27th and once again, Columbia Win-

ery in Woodinville will be our host location. Open from 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM, to all Italian marques. The

event is proceeded by the Alfa Romeo Day at the Exotics at Redmond Town Center so we should get some

nice carryover of participants. This is a great chance to enjoy sharing your Italian car or motorcycle with oth-

ers… perfect garage queen, club racer, or dusty daily

driver can all display side by side.

It is a no-cost event, but we ask that you bring a do-

Alfas Shine at Spokane’s Festival of Speed

Once again, I wandered over to Spokane for the annual Spokane Festival of Speed. As a volunteer at the event, I am due there at 8 AM Saturday which

means I always wander the back roads as I cross our beautiful state on Friday af-ter work. The weekend weather was perfect for wandering and racing… all except

Sunday morning which rained, then followed up with a cold wind we call a Hypo-thermia Maker. Luckily, the sun returned just enough to warm and dry me, and the others at the racetrack.

Saturday the Paddock area had a wonderful assortment of campers, motorhomes, trailers, and huge transporters, each supporting the vintage racing passion at the

level each owner can afford. The race cars included 6 and 12 cylin-

der Jaguars, numerous Porsches,

the Porsche powered Cooper number 55 known as the Pooper, and a ton of BMW

2002s. Alfa Romeos were in good numbers with our Fred Schuddekopf supporting two GTVs, Racecraft supporting Fred Wright’s former GTV, and 4 other owner en-trants. Of those, one was Frank Anderson in his yellow Giulietta Spider plus Dan Sommers in his red Duetto. Also, the Alfissimo prepared Giulietta Sprint of Bill Byrne that supposedly used to belong to Ray Marty, and a dark grey Giulietta Spi-der belonging to Mark Carpenter. The big bore cars were well represented by Corvettes, Camaros, a Falcon, Dodge Challenger, and a few Mustangs including

the extremely fast Grabber Orange 1969 Boss 302 we can often see at both Spo-kane and Seattle vintage events. The

open wheel faction was there in force with Formula V, Formula Super V, Formula Ford, and a number of really fast Formula Atlantic style racers.

As I wandered the paddock, the teams were prepping their cars for the day. Fred Schuddekopf had the GTVs nearly ready, while Dan Som-mers and his one person crew readied

their Duetto race car… which, by the way, used to belong to Keith

Martin. The rest of the teams were handling the last minute prep and double checks to make sure the weekend was a fun and safe couple days.

As the volunteer meeting started I joined in but due to a planning error

and perhaps the confusion of the start of the day, they failed to assign any tasks to me. I had the first day off to visit, watch, and enjoy the racing. (I’d get to work Turn 10 the next day.) I took the extra time to

check out the Car Corral and found that Alfa Romeo was represented by a nice dark blue 1978 Spider as well as a red GTV6 Balocco edition.

Both owners took their cars out for the spirited parade laps.

The star of the weekend, especially for those of us in NWARC, was the 1935 Alfa 8c35 Tipo C brought by Peter Giddings. You may see this car at the upcoming national convention, but here, we got to see it running at speed. The original Alfa 8c35 #50012 built by Scuderia Ferrari ran or won a number of impressive races in Europe at the hands of greats like

Dreyfus, Farina, Brivio, and the master; Tazio Nuvolari. The Tipo C was the first Alfa with a fully independent suspen-sion. It was also designed to use either the 3.8 ltr straight 8 cylinder or the V12 engine. In V12 setup it was known as the 12c36 Tipo C.

Page 7: IniezioneIniezionenwalfaclub.com/media/iniezione/2013/Iniez0613web.pdfDodge City. A lengthy visit with brother, Weldon in SE Kansas, not too far from Coffeyville, where the Dalton

NWARC June 2013 newsletter page 7

The #50012 car was brought to the US to race in the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup and also the Indianapolis

500, to be driven by the popular and successful American driver, Rex Mays. Though the car retired early at Indy, it did well at the hands of Mays and finished 3rd at the Vanderbilt Cup ahead of the Auto Unions. The car and Mays also did well in Europe where they came in 3rd in their first Grand Prix

race.

The international racing rules changed for 1938 requiring smaller displacement engines so the 3.8 ltr needed to become a 3.0 ltr to continue. Fred Offenhauser was tasked with reducing the bore and stroke which meant a

complete re-engineering of the fantastic Alfa engine. (It was such a great job, the car still runs the Offenhauser crank today!) The car was back at Indy for the 1938 race, as well as

5 more times in the Indianapolis 500 before retir-ing in 1947. As often happens, pieces of the re-

tired car went multiple places with the engine heading to California while the frame ended up back at Alfa Romeo. Alfa put a V12 into it and made a 12c36 to display in the Museo.

Many years passed but when Peter Giddings had his chance, he bought the Alfa / Offenhauser 3.0

ltr engine, then bought the spare chassis (officially known as #8) that the factory race team had as backup for car

#50012. Next, these pieces and a number of original suspension and brake parts travelled to Auto Restorations in New Zealand to be built back to original. The treat was that the only other completely original 8c35 (#50013) was there for comparison. Peter’s car was recreated to match as original without updates that might have been made over the years otherwise. As Alfa has the original chassis #50012 displayed as a 12C36, Peter’s car is known as Chassis#8 / Engine

#50012… but its accuracy, sound, and look are 100% perfect.

On Sunday, Peter put on a wonderful show for all as he ran his race in early afternoon. The sounds of the Alfa Romeo 8 cylinder with the twin Roots superchargers is stunning and only on an Alfa! The early design suspension is something to

watch as each wheel seems to be pointing its own direction as Peter muscles the car around the hairpin Turn 9 past the crowds watching from the paddock.

Peter Giddings was a gracious and wonderful person to all who stopped to visit or look at his car. “These cars should be shared for all to see and hear.” he said to a person who asked if it was too valuable to race. Another person introduced his daughter, dressed in her racing outfit, and said to Peter, “When she was 12, you let her sit in your Aston Martin race car at an event. She became hooked and now races with me in Formula Vs.” Peter remembered that day, 20 years ago as

well. There was also a 1959 Stanguellini Formula Jr parked next to Peter’s paddock space. It had been brought to the track by its current owner just so Peter, a previous owner of the car, could see it and help confirm its restored accuracy. Whenever Peter is coming to an event with one of his cars, you know it will be a good show and take a moment to say hello. He’s a true vintage racer, passionate collector, and a very nice Alfista. Original Pancake House on the Bothell-Everett Highway, just North of Bothell. Arriving at 8AM means you eat breakfast before we head out. Arriving later means you join us as we leave at 9 AM on our drive. We’ll follow the

North Cascades Hwy, then Loup-Loup Pass, staying in Omak on Saturday night. That evening, there is an op-tional tour to the Grand Coulee Dam to see the new laser show on the huge spillway, which makes for a nice white

screen.

On Sunday, we’ll wander back roads up north and cross the border into Canada near Osoyoos before return westbound through the Cascades on Canada’s Crowsnest Hwy. Our speeds will be down a little for safety as we watch for

bear, cougar, elk, deer, moose, sasquatch… all common along this stretch. I even plan to make you take a short hike… along a short, paved flat pathway touring the Othello Tunnels and the river below. (No bears allowed.) Our Sunday night, we stay at Harrison Hot Springs Resort with a group

dinner that evening!

Monday morning, we visit a historic old country store, then tour the beautiful Minter Gardens before heading back across the border to the USA. This means that you will each want to ensure you have

your Passport in good standing and you’re not a convicted felon. Both are key for crossings. The Washington DOT assures me they will have the I-5 bridge over the Skagit repaired so it won’t impact our re-turn.

Hotel Reservation info will be available in the July newsletter!

What does an Alfetta GT, an Alfa spider, a pair of 164s and a couple Milanos, a near perfect Duetto plus a Giulietta Sprint, a Lancia Scorpion, and a slew of Fiat 500s, have in common? They all gathered as part of the monthly NWARC meeting held on May 18. The host was Alex Sargeant and the rest of the crew at Fiat of Seattle. With around a half dozen NWARC

members buying the 500s and no new Alfas to buy, it was nice to see new cars.

With a nice turnout of both NWARC members and a few FEN folks, everyone enjoyed the location and wonderful BBQ ef-forts supplied by Fiat. The hot dogs were good, big dogs… and the hamburgers were huge 1/2 pounders. Way to go Alex and the grillmaster!

We wandered, talked cars, ate food, and visited with each other for the first 2 hours while some even took test drives in the new Fiats. Around 1 PM, people gathered inside for the club meeting portion while sitting on the bright red Fiat couches. The conversation had to stay quick or people might just nap a little.

We thanked Alex, who pointed out that the new Fiat 500L is due into the Fiat Studio soon. They are getting 6 of these

cars in on June 24th, and 6 more in early July. The new 500L (L is for Large) is 6 inches wider and 2 feet longer than the standard 500. Just for a smile, the old Fiat Multipla from the late 50s was actually a half inch shorter than the current US

version of the 500... simply our expecta-tions of size has increased along with the numerous safety, technology, and conven-ience items.

We chatted about the long list of great events coming up like the Father’s Day car show in Vancouver BC and the NWARC Gita e’Corsa on June 29th at The Ridge Mo-torsport Track. We also talked about Alfa

California (Alfa Romeo National Convention 2013 in mid July), and the NWARC Viva Italia All Italian Car Gathering which will be held on July 27th at Columbia Winery. We even chatted about an August drive and the 2013 Half Fast Lap of Washington... the

NWARC 3 day annual drive.!
