C.A.P.A. Excursion to China China Expanding Horizons Nearly 100 students & teachers from schools across Sydney Region participated in the 12 day tour, which included Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou & Chengdu. The different school groups all participated in a range of activities & school visits related to their particular interest group. Tempe High school had 7 students participate in this event. Aliza Chin Y11 Debating, Cleona Ha & Julie Luoh Nyugen Y11 Hospitality. Lisa Chan Y10 V/Arts, Margaret Phu, Y9 , Michelle Khazaee & Lisa Huynh, all V/Arts students. Student Reports: Michelle Khazaee 9V Last month on the 15th, 7 students along with Ms. Evangelinos, went on the Expanding Horizons China Tour. We visited four cities: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Chengdu. Overall, it was an enjoyable trip where I saw many historical building, amazing views and learnt about how things were done in China (especially their art lessons). Predominately, Chinese art lessons taught their students calligraphy, paper-cuts, painting in watercolours, and painting traditional opera masks as well as western art. In one school, we had the opportunity to try out calligraphy, paper-cutting, painting in watercolours, and painting traditional opera masks. To me, paper-cutting was the best option as it wouldn‘t need to dry and I could easily store it in my suitcase. However, once I started, I realised it was harder than I expected. In paper-cutting, precision is everything; one accidental flick of the blade can lead into the impression of a messy paper-cut and, if you were reckless, would ruin the artwork. Not only was it hard, It was time-consuming. I wasn‘t even half way until many of the others doing calligraphy and painting, went to another station. Eventually, I completed my paper-cut and it was quite remarkable seeing the finished product that took so long to do.

Lisa Chan– Year 10 My ten day visit to China was a forever changing experience. Having to visit large schools and their school performances, eat ridiculously appetizing foods, seeing the neon lights every night, frantic shopping and culture was truly an experience that many people missed out on. Schools in China are large which support 1000-3000 students almost every day. Their students‘ view on art is to draw anime, calligraphy, paintings and bust. Surprisingly many of the students understood English, but didn‘t know how to hear or speak it fluently but the most efficient way to communicate with them was to write what you wish to say. To sum it up China‘s students work hard and are always focusing on their studies, many of them hate PE and have many sleepless nights. The performances are impressive and left me more open minded for more ideas. Apparently every night, everywhere in the city, the neon lights turn on making the city itself look like a glowing light bulb. Shopping was frantic as ever with people chasing foreigners and selling fake items. Some of these shop owners go to extremes to chase you out of their own shop and pressure you to buy the product regardless if you‘re interested or not. Food there was most appetising, but that much of the food served to us couldn‘t be finished. Funny enough China has many fast food restaurants, KFC and Starbucks could be practically found within every street. China itself is extremely large, so many areas that we didn‘t even have enough time to explore them. Traffic is wild as is shopping The tour is something that I‘ll never forget especially the people I met. I would also like to thank Julie Evangelinos for offering this oppor-tunity to me.

Lisa Huynh—9Y Recently, the NSW Education Department organised and planned a trip for Australian students to visit China, a land of rich history and culture. This trip was called the ―Expanding Horizons Tour 2012‖, a title signifying our desire to expand our horizons, thoughts and boundaries. By doing so, we were to travel abroad to China where we had the most marvellous and memorable time. An experience we will endlessly treasure and cherish. Throughout this trip we experienced new and different environments, seeing their rich culture and history, learning new facts, expanding our thoughts, touring the most beautiful places, tasting various Chinese cuisines and meeting new people. One of the various and important aspects of this trip I especially enjoyed was meeting new people. During most of the school trips, we were paired to a buddy. With our buddy we were to befriend and discuss various things from who we are to what we like and what we were going to do to what we were going to eat for lunch that day. Through this trip were cultural exchanges where we exchanged gifts, spoke in each other‘s language and tried out one another‘s form of art. Although time was short we all bonded well and have created a connection that will forever stay within us.

Another trait of this trip was the sights we saw and the sites we went to. From Shanghai‘s Yu Garden and Pearl Tower to Yangzhou‘s west lake and Temple of the Soul‘s Retreat to Nanjing‘s M50 Art Gallery and Zhonghua city gate to Chengdu‘s Jinli Street and Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. There was amazing scenery. souvenirs and food. One of the places we went to also offered McDonalds.

Some of the most breathtaking moments were of Chinese students performing a beautiful cultural dance, laughing so hard at the see-though glass bathrooms and of the terrifying ferocious closing elevators. Through tears and laughter, the memories through this trip will be unforgettable and the moments of bittersweet farewells to our sister schools and new friends.

Margaret Phu-9Y This year I participated in the Expanding Horizons China Tour. There were a few subject areas who participated such as Hospitality (Food Tech), Visual Arts and Public Speaking from our school which was a total of 8 people including Mrs Evangelinos (the head teacher of CAPA) who also attended. The five places included: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Chengdu. On the day, I had to wake up very early around 5am to get ready. I left the house at 6 and got there at 6:40 around there. I had to get out early because of the traffic in the morning. My group/flight was group C. We checked in at 8-8:30 with our luggage to Air China. As soon as we‘re done checking in, we got to go and buy food for breakfast and the plane. I went to get Maccas with some friends and then ate until it was time for us to go to the plane. Once we were on the plane we were very excited. Each one of us on the trip weren‘t sitting together as a whole group because we were given random spots… It was a tiring and long flight on the way there to Shanghai, China. Once we got there we went to our first hotel and got ready to go to sleep since it was very late… We went to different schools in different cities. My favourite school was the one in Shanghai. It was an experimental school. I made new friends with the students there and we exchanged gifts for each other. The day seemed so short. We had to leave after a few hours.

All the students there were very hard-working and were very determined to try their best. I learned that they have less sleep than us students here in Australia. We got to see pandas in Chengdu. We went shopping often and I spent so much. Our group got to shop and look around for approximately 3 hours each time. It was heaps of fun. We often went to see the performances from our tour group (The Performing Art Students) and also the chinese student‘s performances as well. Everyone was pretty amazed at their performances. I made some new friends not only from China but from the people who were on the trip as well. They were also from the other schools in Sydney such as Sydney Tech, Canterbury Girls, Caringbah High School, Engadine and our school etc. They are such nice people!

Overall it was a great experience and I really enjoyed it and would definitely want to go again next time if there is another opportunity. I was extremely tired on the way home and hardly slept on the overnight plane. I would like to thank Scott Smith, Rod Megahey and all the other teachers, staffs and tour guides and so on, and my teacher from my school Ms Evangelinos.

CAPA (continued) Excursion to Virtuosos in the Production House On Friday 19 October some people went to the virtuosos in the production house at the Australian Institute of Music. We watched some pianists play the piano. They were great at playing piano and they were amazing. At the Australian Institute of Music they showed us the way to fill in the gaps of speech and sounds in a part of a video (missing the speech). We had a computer person to put the speech into place and to record the voice and sound. There was a video that was missing some parts to be filled in. The way they put the speech was that they would go back 4 beats and start it from there. They told the person to say the words at the exact speed and exact moment until they get it right. William Bradley ―Brad‖ Pitt a famous American actor and film producer was there to fill in the words for the missing part of the video. Next was the sound part of the video. Bruce Ji and Brian Wen volunteered for the sound part of the video. The sound of a bottle being put down on the concrete had to make a sound so a tile was put on the stage and the two bottles had to be put on the concrete tile so it would create the sound. The sound had to be put down the same time as in the video. And then a punching scene was next. The sound of being punched in the side of the head had to be made. This time the sound had to be made by punching a cabbage wrapped up in cling wrap. And the last one was a cracking sound of the neck. This was performed with a celery stick and you had to bend it in half quickly. This will produce a cracking sound. At last the adding of the sounds and voices was done. The computer man then put the sound and voices into the video. We watched the video and it was like a video that had no errors it sounded great. And that was the end of the event. Brian Wen, 7B

Sydney Region Music Festival

We are the Ukes of Today. We are Bradley and Matthew Deacon, 8Y, Michael Lansdowne, 7Y, and Ned Olive, Newtown HS of the Performing Arts. You may have heard us play at the Spring Event. On 20th September we performed in the Sydney Region Music Festival in the Sydney Opera House. We performed two original songs – ‗Keep on Flowin‘ and ‗If Life Becomes a Mess‘ – on stage in the Concert Hall. We had our own dressing room, with our name on the door and a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was pretty exciting. However, what was even more exciting than that was performing in front of 2500 people, a full house, in the incredible Concert Hall. Although it was hard work it all paid off to hear the congratulations we received afterwards. We impressed Dr Phil Lambert (director of the Sydney Region) so much that he invited us to play at another prestigious gig on 17th October. We cannot wait for this and other gigs and are really looking forward to the future.

CAREERS

KPMG Careers Workshops

On Wednesday, 17th October, we were privileged to

have six representatives of the firm KPMG in our school conducting career advisory workshops with Year 10. Our contact was Julia Frame, Senior Coordinator of Corporate Citizenship with the company. She arranged for six young professionals from the firm to conduct workshops with our Year 10 classes: Monica, Ian, Simmy, Shaffeem, Natasha and Yoke-Koon.

Firstly, in teams of two, they went through some common skills and attributes that employers look for, and Year 10 were surprised to discover that they already possessed some of these. The students were then shown, through activity based learning, the importance of communication skills and teamwork. As you can see from the photos, a great time was had by all in the process. After the sessions, in the informal atmosphere of a morning tea, Tempe High School staff were able to interact more freely with the KPMG team I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of Year 10 and Tempe high School, to thank the team from KPMG for their most impressive performance – the students were totally engaged for the whole time and learnt a great deal. Also thanks to Ted Surette, a partner at KPMG, for enabling this to happen. Thank you also to the Tempe High School staff involved: Mrs Phillips, Dr Cambridge, Ms Kritikos, Ms Vimalarajah, Ms White and Mr Fawcett. Mrs J Plioplis—Head Teacher HSIE

Tempe High School Reunion—28 July 2012 Dear John Simply, thank you.

Your support has been appreciated by all and the use of the school cafeteria was just fabulous. All past students were at a high just being back to where they had spent 4 to 6 great years of their lives. Much was learnt and unbreakable bonds were forged, with many successful stories through business and/or scholar. It was also good to see some past teachers and thank you for putting me in touch with them, maybe next time we can improve on the numbers. There was much to talk about and catching up with old friends from various years (1989—1972). The result being that all wanted this to become an annual fixed date event. The event was topped by the great service provided by Daisy with her staff and Steve, a true credit to the school. Please accept this cheque of $750 as a donation to the school, which I am sure you can put to good use. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you feel I can be of any assistance, it would be a pleasure to help in any way. Yours sincerely PETER CVETKOVSKI

School Zone Flashing Lights Initiative

Roads and Maritimes Services (RMS) is pleased to advise that the school zone on Unwins Bridge Road at Tempe High School has been included as one of the next school zone sites to receive school zone flashing lights. This project aims to alert motorists of the speed restriction around schools to improve safety for school children. It is not possible to provide you with a date for the installation of the lights, however, it is expected that the work will start in late October and all school zones in this rollout should be fitted with the flashing lights by December 2012. Do your block for Gonski If you would like to assist in the campaign for better funding for public schools like ours, there is a great opportunity coming up. As part of the national I Give a Gonski campaign, parents, teachers, principals and education support staff from schools across Australia will be letterboxing in their local neighbourhoods between Novembers 10 and 17. They will be letting people know about the Gonski Review, which found there needs to be an urgent increase in funding for education and public schools in particular, across the nation and an overhaul of the way funding is delivered. Extra funding would make a real difference, allowing schools like ours to invest in ways that will benefit students like additional teachers and more support for students in the classroom. Teachers, parents and support staff from our school will be taking part in this action. It would be great if you could assist to help keep the pressure on the politicians to deliver for our children. The Gonski Review report was released in February this year. In September, the Federal Government agreed to act on the findings of the Gonski Review. But all the state and territory governments are yet to come on board and agree to contribute at least part of the extra funding required. Please support this activity if you can. You can distribute letters in your street, your block or even the whole neighbourhood if you have time. The school contact for more information is 9558 2023 You can learn more and download a copy of the letter to distribute at the campaign website:
