It enjoyed considerable popularity with fashionable European audiences from the i jth to the igth centuries but now survives only as a folk instrument. The struck board zither was unknown in the Far East until about 1800, when it was introduced by Europeans. Left Flavins the dulcimer. The player uses small beaters or hammers to strike the strings.
