ABOUT THE HOTEL
The Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour is truly a Hotel with a
difference. Historical fortress walls contrast with modern interior design
and bespoke luxury fittings. The 21 suites range from 40 square metres
to an impressive 130 square metres. All have unobstructed views of
the Grand Harbour and the surrounding marina, high vaulted ceilings
and ample natural light. The Hotel offers a swimming pool, tucked
discreetly on the rooftop of the annex building with a terrace looking
out across the water to Vittoriosa and Cospicua. Other features
include airy communal spaces, a fully fledged bar, a fine dining modern
Mediterranean restaurant, an events rooftop with panoramic harbour
views and a boardroom for small conferences.
Built in 1554 during the reign of La Sengle by military
engineer Bellavante, Sheer Bastion sealed off Senglea
from Cospicua in preparation for the Ottoman invasion
of The Great Siege of Malta. Later in the early 1600’s,
Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt built a massive structure;
a large wooden crane eventually known as ‘il-Macina’ that
was designed to hoist heavy cargo or galley parts and bring
them ashore. In 1864 this wooden structure was replaced by
a fixed iron sheerlegs crane. When the Admiralty dismantled
this crane in 1927, it crashed into the water with terrific force,
breaking in two and creating a five-foot wave. The Malta
Labour Party moved into the building in the 1970s, using it as
a headquarters until the 1990s, when it moved to Ħamrun.
Now, the Macina is set to be revived as a national landmark;
a luxury boutique hotel in a standout building that will be a
showpiece within the Cottonera Regeneration Project.

A stay in one of our suites is a unique experience. The
high arched ceilings are dramatically lit and beautiful
designer furniture is used throughout. The elegant and
comfortable suites are all fully air-conditioned. The larger
suites offer a comfortable kitchenette including fridge-
freezer, oven and microwave. All other suites offer a mini
fridge and coffee making facilities. Comfortable Milano
sofa beds are provided in a number of the suites.
SUITESAll suites are fully equipped with a safety box, telephone,
hair dryer and televisions with satellite channels in the
living room and bedroom or sleeping area. Bath and hand
towels, bathrobes and slippers are provided, as well as
a range of luxury shampoos, conditioners, and body and
hand soaps created especially for the hotel by Trussardi.
In addition, hair tonic, shaving lotion, facial cleanser,
facial lotion and moisturizer are offered. At guests’
disposal there is a wake-up service, a daily newspaper on
television, laundry service and a helpful room directory.
Breakfast is available in-room. The Hotel offers a suite
specially equipped and dedicated for disabled guests.

Like the Maltese language itself, the menu is a taste of history derived from
the island’s Mediterranean-semitic roots, with a contemporary twist, created
using only the finest local, seasonal produce. The menu is composed by
a multi-award winning team, previously of the Villa Brasserie in St. Julian’s,
led by talented Chef de Cuisine Andrea Marchetti, and directed by 24-time
award winning Chef and restauranteur Chris Hammett. Dining al fresco is an
unforgettable experience in the warmer months, when the imposing bastions,
the fortified city of Birgu, and the spectacular harbour are illuminated by
traditional Festa firework displays. Patrons can enjoy the world class wines
from our expansive wine cellar.
