Council tours Chinatown The BCHF Council Fieldtrip and Meeting

Council enthusiastically embraced Judy Lam Maxwellʹs idea of going on

one of her Historical Chinatown Tours before the October 24th Council

meeting.  Thanks to Judy, we had a great morning touring Chinatown,

then had lunch before convening in the Lim Sai Hor Kow Mock

Benevolent Association hall for our meeting.  Many thanks to Orville D.

Lim, the president of this association, for his warm welcome. Orville

frankly shared his thoughts regarding the challenges that many of the

associations are facing in order to preserve their histories and historic

buildings. He said that as Vancouverʹs demographic has changed, so has

the struggle in caring for these heritage buildings.

Judy says that her ʺprimary goal is to make these tours mutually beneficial

to participants and the Chinatown community.ʺ  She hopes to address

some of the current challenges in the area: ʺOur aim,ʺ she notes, ʺis to raise

money for restoration of heritage buildings, while educating participants

about a difficult past in a now‐revitalized neighbourhood. We also want to

take participants into various unique cultural and modern businesses to

bring attention to their value, products, and function in the community.ʺ
