The Clark County Parks and Recreation Department, Desert Breeze Community Center Martial Arts Program offers the Introduction to Martial Arts class as a brief survey of traditions, philosophy, basic techniques, self-defense and forms common to many martial arts but with emphasis on Taekwondo and Jujitsu. Our classes are directed toward the family with students of all ages. We strongly encourage parents to enroll in class with their children. The Martial Arts Program is inclusive, non-competitive and designed to provide our students with every opportunity to develop character, focus, concentration, self-control, strength, flexibility and aerobic conditioning through regular martial arts training. Many of our students improve in their schoolwork and interactions with others, developing self-esteem through genuine accomplishments. Class Procedures Students should arrive punctually before class in comfortable loose fitting clothes and begin to stretch out, warm-up or practice forms. In addition, students are expected to assist in setting up the class material and equipment (mats, kicking shield, sparring equipment, etc.). Class will begin promptly with bows of respect. During class students will stretch, do exercises, perform kicks, punches falls and throws to warm up and practice techniques. Other class activities will involve exercises emphasizing kicks, punches, self-defense, rolls, falls, throws, and traditional forms. The traditional forms of Taekwondo, called poomsae, are stylized, sequences of defensive and offensive moves. There are individual poomsae for each ability level. A major part of the study of Tae Kwon Do is spent in perfecting poomsae. Jujitsu is noncompetitive and emphasizes non-aggressive self-defense. The jujitsu curriculum teaches practical rolls, and falls building these skills from the beginning for throwing techniques the students will learn later. The techniques are organized into groups of techniques with increasing difficulty, moving the student from beginner to the black belt instructor level. The student will learn Korean and Japanese words and phrases, culture and history as well as the philosophy of Juijitsu and Taekwondo. Each student will be expected to practice and study at home, but self defense techniques should only be practiced at the dojo under supervision of an instructor Our experience has shown that those students whose parents attend class with the child regularly and supervise their practice and homework are more likely to continue martial arts study, advance faster, and better perfect their techniques than students whose parents do not. Those students whose parents participate in the class do even better. We cordially invite and strongly recommend that parents join or at least attend classes and work with their children at home. Student Class Procedures

1. Arrive at the classroom at least 15-30 minutes before class to warm-up and help with class set-up.

2. Remove shoes and socks. 3. Taekwondo and Jujitsu uniforms are not required for beginners. Wear clean, modest,

loose fitting clothes that allow a free range of movement for kicking, punching and rolling on the ground. Clothing should be loose but not revealing. Clothing typically worn in fitness centers is inappropriate for the martial arts classroom (no bare shoulders or midriffs).

4. Students should be clean with closely trimmed finger and toenails.

5. No jewelry (rings, bracelets, necklaces, piercing studs or rings, etc. only a smooth wedding band may be worn) watches, hair clips, barrettes, etc. No hard object should be on your body because if kicked or punched such objects may injure you or your training partner.

6. No chewing gum, candy or food is allowed in the gym. A nutritional snack (bananas, apples or other non-messy fruit) may be brought to the Saturday sparring class. No sport drinks, only water.

7. Class begins promptly at assigned time. Students should be in the assigned place, properly dressed and warmed-up at the assigned starting time.

Parent Class Procedures

1. It is the parent’s responsibility to insure that the student arrives at the class on time, 15-30 minutes before the start of class. Late or tardy arrivals are disruptive and detract from the educational experience for those students that arrived on time if the instructor must stop and direct the tardy student.

2. It is the responsibility of the parent to insure that the student arrives properly dressed with required equipment or materials for class.

3. It is the parent’s responsibility to insure that the student does all required practicing and homework. Young children do not control their own schedules and cannot be expected to remember to practice.

4. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend all classes. Parents are encouraged to join the class and become students. Parents may not interrupt class directly or by talking loudly in the back of the class. Cell phone must be turned off!

5. Parents may not direct or instruct their children during class. 6. Parents should make an appointment to speak with the instructor. Before class

instructors are preparing for class. Sometimes instructors will have time after class to speak to parents.

Homework Developing skill in physical activities, balance, flexibility and conditioning require regular practice outside of class. To improve in all of these areas students need to practice the drills, stretches, techniques and conditioning exercises at least three other days in addition to class. Parents can assist the younger student by reminding him or her to practice and supervising the practice. At a minimum students should do the following on 3 non-class days/week:

1. Jump rope for 3 minutes. 2. Do 10 pushups. 3. Do 10 sit-ups. 4. Perform current poomsae 10X. 5. Do 20 of each kick, punch, block and stance while line-blocking, punching and

kicking. 6. Stretch-out using the class stretching routine

2. Be respectful of all students’ right to learn by assisting when requested and not interfering with class.

3. Turn cell phone to vibrate. 4. Take cell phone conversations outside.

Uniforms No uniforms are required for the beginning student. We discourage you from purchasing a uniform until you are certain you or your child wish to continue with Tae Kwon Do and Jujitsu. Students should wear loose fitting clothing that will allow freedom of movement. Tae Kwon Do uniforms are called doboks. The dokok differs from other martial arts uniforms in having a V-neck pullover tunic. The Jujitsu uniform is called a gi and has a wrap-around top. If your student has a martial arts uniform (a taekwondo dobok) this can be worn for beginning jujitsu classes but more advanced techniques will damage doboks. The jujitsu gi made of thicker materials and resist tearing during throwing techniques. A properly maintained uniform should last the student several years. If a student continues to train in Taekwondo he will need a dobok and sparring equipment and a gi, Jujitsu students only need a gi. Sparring/Contact The Level I Introduction to Martial Arts class does not involve full contact sparring. Training will involve kicking and punching bags, targets and shields. In self-defense students will learn falls, rolls, escapes, wrist locking, blocking and parrying, techniques taught as basic self-defense applications. Taekwondo sport sparring uses protective gear including head gear, chest protector, forearm pads, elbow pads, skin/instep pads, knee pads, groin protector (males and females), breast protector (females), gloves and mouth piece. Continuing students will require all protective gear. Beginning students must provide their own mouth pieces and groin protection only. Learning Objectives The Level I Introduction to Martial Arts class is designed to provide the student with a survey of the main topics and the basic techniques of the martial arts with emphasis on Taekwondo and Jujitsu. The successful student will:

• Attend at least 12 of the 16 classes. • Participate in all aspects of class. • Know a few facts about the history, development, and philosophy of Martial Arts. • Perform a few basic kicks, blocks, and strikes. • Perform a few basic falls, roll and escapes. • Follow the instructor in performing the first basic Taekwondo poomse, H1.

THE ESOTERIC PRINCIPLES OF JUDO

by

PROFESSOR HENRY SEISHIRO OKAZAKI Since the fundamental

principle acquired through the practice of Jujitsu has been elevated to a finer moral concept called Judo,. The way of gentleness, it may be said that the primary objective of practicing Judo is perfection of character. And in order to perfect one’s character, one must be grateful for the abundant blessings of Heaven, and Earth and Nature as well as for the great love of parents; one must realize his enormous debt to teachers and be ever mindful of his obligations to the general public.

As a member of a family, one’s first duty is to be filial to parents, to be helpful and harmonious with one’s wife or husband, and to be affectionate to brothers and sisters, in order that the family may be a sound, successful and harmonious unit of the community.

As a member of a nation, one must be grateful for the protection which one derives as a citizen; one must guard against self-interest and foster a spirit of social service. One must be discrete in action, yet hold courage in high regard, and strive to cultivate manliness. One must be gentle, modest, polite and resourceful; never eccentric, but striving always to practice moderation in all things. One must realize that these qualities constitute the secret of the practice of Judo.

Anyone who practices Judo should neither be afraid of the strong nor despise the weak nor should he act contrary to the strength of his enemy

Page 12: Introduction to the Martial Arts Syllabus · Introduction to the Martial Arts Syllabus (9/1/14) Instructors: ... Jujitsu is an ancient martial art with origins as far back as 4000

12

because of the art he has acquired. For example, when a boat is set afloat on water, one man’s strength is sufficient to move the boat back and forth. This is only possible because the boat floats; for if, on the other hand, the boat is placed on dry land, the same man’s strength is scarcely sufficient to move it. It is necessary, therefore, that the weak should learn this fact with regard to the strong.

The forms and techniques should be remembered as the basic art of Judo. One should never use these arts against anyone without sufficient justification. Therefore, refrain from arrogance and do not despise a small enemy or a weak opponent.

Every student of Judo should realize that honesty is the foundation of all virtues. Kindness is the secret of business prosperity. Amiability is the essence of success. Working pleasantly is the mother of health. Strenuous effort and diligence conquer adverse circumstances. Simplicity, fortitude and manliness are the keys to joy and gladness; and service to humanity is the fountain of mutual existence and common prosperity.

As aptly expressed in the poem - The boughs that bear most hang lowest. One should never forget the virtue of modesty as one attains proficiency

in the art of Judo. Do not disdain or regard lightly either literary or military art; each is important and deserves equal cultivation and respect. Within constant motion and change, there is tranquility; and within tranquility, there is motion and change.

Remember always parental love and the enormous indebtedness to teachers. Be grateful for the protection of Heaven and Earth. Be a good leader to younger men. To lead younger men will, in the long run, mean to attain proficiency in the skill of Judo.

Like a drawing in India ink of the whispering of wind in the pines, the secrets of Judo can only be suggested. Only through personal experience can one comprehend the mystic ecstasy of such secrets. It is said of Jujitsu that it would require ten years of practice in order to win victory over one’s self and twenty years to win victory over others.

Whatever the trials or dangers, even ‘Hell under the upraised sword,’ remain calm and remember the doctrine imparted to you by your teacher.

A noted verse reads - For the lotus flower to fall is to rise to the surface. Only by cultivating a receptive state of mind, without preconceived ideas or thoughts, one can master the secret art of reacting spontaneously and naturally, without hesitation and without purposeless resistance.

These are the secrets of Kodenkan into which I have had the honor to initiate you.

TAEKWONDO POOMSAE

One of the most important aspects of the study of Taekwondo is Poomsae or forms, referred to as kata in Japanese martial arts, (especially karate). Poomsae is a stylized fight against multiple attackers incorporating a choreographed series of defensive and offensive techniques or movements. We use the H series of beginning Poomsae and the World Tae Kwon Do Federation approved Taeguk series (Taeguk 1-8) of Poomsae. Each Poomsae starts and ends in the same place. Each Poomsae has its own rhythm. The Taeguk series of Poomsae is designed to start with the most basic elements and techniques and progressively add more difficult and complicated movements. Poomsae provides the student with the opportunity to practice standard attacks and defenses at his/her level of development. Poomse allows the teacher to evaluate the development of the student and the extent to which he/she has been practicing recently. Poomsae is one of the most important tools in teaching Tae Kwon Do. An important feature of Poomsae is breath control. When performing Poomsae the breath should be exhaled with each punch, block or kick on the count. Exhaling on punches, blocks and kicks is important in enhancing focus, another important aspect of Poomsae. Focus is an element in the larger martial arts concept called Ki. The physical manifestations of Ki are that every action is focused. When stepping forward and punching, the fist snaps, the foot steps down, the breath is exhaled and the eyes are on the spot being punched, all at the same instant, everything comes together. There are other metaphysical characteristics to Ki that we will discuss later. Balance is a very important aspect of Poomsae. The student should step from position to position or from stance to stance with an economy of movement and with self-confidence. The transition from one position to the next must be balanced without wobbling or fumbling steps. Each stance should be correct and stable. In the following descriptions of each Poomsae the Korean commands are in bold italicized type with an exclamation point and a translation into English is given in parentheses. In the description of the Poomsae English terms are used for the various stances, and techniques and the Korean translation is provided in parentheses. The student should learn both English and Korean terms and be prepared to use or respond to both. The position numbers refer to the floor diagrams following each Poomsae. The sequential numbers represent one separate and discreet move that should be performed on count, much like dance steps are counted (not out loud). The Poomsae should be slow enough for each move to be performed completely and discreetly. As the student masters the moves the speed can be increased to about one count per second. However, executing each move with precision and completeness is more important than increasing speed. Finally, the student should perform each Poomsae as though it is a real fight. In a real fight before executing a turn or defensive technique towards an attacker one would turn the head to face the approaching attacker then turn the body. Likewise, the student should turn the face in the direction where the next technique will be focused before

Page 15: Introduction to the Martial Arts Syllabus · Introduction to the Martial Arts Syllabus (9/1/14) Instructors: ... Jujitsu is an ancient martial art with origins as far back as 4000

15

turning the body and executing the technique. Each movement and technique should be forceful and explosive as though directed towards a real attacker. The student should be serious, not laughing or smiling while performing Poomsae. The kihop should be loud and demonstrate purpose, self-confidence and a taekwondoistic attitude (the attitude of the warrior). H 1 H 1 is the first Poomse we study. It is composed of a low block (ah rae mahkki), a middle punch (momtong chirugi), 90o (1/4), 180o (1/2), and 270o (3/4) turns in the front stance (ahp koobi). The middle punch is executed on the same side of the body as the forward leg(momtong bahndae chirugi). The low block (ah rae mahkki) and middle punch (momtong bahndae chirugi) should be performed crisply with two hands and ending, as do all techniques in Tae Kwon Do, with a snap. Breathing should be controlled with the breath exhaled with the execution of the blocking and punching movements. Each movement should be precise and controlled expressing power and an economy of movement. The superior student will turn to face in the direction of the next turn before moving into that position. She will execute each block and punch with two hands ending with a snap. The superior student will kihop loudly. From Position 1

Cha ryuht ! (Attention!) Assume the attention stance (moah sohgi) with the feet together, the fists at the side, the back should be straight and the eyes looking straight ahead.

Junbi ! Ready Stance! (junbi sohgi), move the left foot to the left, one

shoulder width from the right foot. Hold the fists in front of belt with the arms forming a hexagon. The back should be straight and the eyes looking straight ahead, kihop (yell).

Seijak ! (Begin!) 1. Turn 90o (1/4 turn) to the left (west) pivoting on the ball of the right

foot and stepping with the left foot into a front stance (ahp koobi ) and execute a low block (ah rae mahkki) with left fist.

2. Step to position 2 with the right foot into a front stance (ahp koobi )

and execute a middle punch (momtong bahndae chirugi) with the right fist.

From Position 2 3. Turn 180o (1/2 turn) to the right (east) pivoting on the ball of the left

foot and stepping with the right foot into a front stance (ahp koobi ) and execute a low block (ah rae mahkki) with the right fist.
