INTEGRATED 2009 We made the presentation video for Storm Thorg-erson (GBR) at Integrated 2009. Storm was a key member of the British graphic art group Hipgnosis, and designed a lot of the most famous single and album CD covers..
To give public the best view who this great person was, to tell the story of the way he worked, we used some of his iconic CD covers and played with them a little bit. Integrated2009 is a biannual international design conference that took place in deSingel Antwerp in October 2009. It focused on the crossover between contemporary graphic design, illustration, typogra-phy, new media, technology & art. Integrated2009 is organised by my school Sint Lucas Antwerpen (Karel de Grote-Hogeschool) in collaboration with deSin-gel, Internationale Kunstcampus, Antwerp.

IN KATURIAN’S MINDv i deo- ins ta l l a t i e
‘in Katurian’s mind’ is een video installatie geïn-spireerd op ‘The Pillowman’, een toneelscript van Martin McDonagh. We zijn gefascineerd door het hoofdpersonage Katurian, een schrijver.Hoe zijn fantasie werd beïnvloed doorheen zijn kinderjaren, waardoor hij gruwelijke maar briljante verhaaltjes schreef.In de installatie proberen we een beeld te vormen van wat er zich allemaal afspeelt in het hoofd van de creatieve schrijver, een weergave van zijn verbeeld-ing. De filmpjes die we laten zien zijn uitgepuurde as-sociaties. Met deze projecties willen wij de toeschou-wer prikkelen met beeld en geluid.

Door onze interesse voor experiment, surrealisme en dubbelzinnigheid kwamen we bij het toneelscript ‘The Pillowman’ van Martin McDonagh. Het stuk brengt direct al enkele vragen en thema’s met zich mee: horror, absurditeit, herinneringen, poëzie, ‘De kracht van verhalen vertellen’, ‘Imiteert de kunst het leven, of het leven de kunst?’, fictie vs. realiteit,…Initieel was onze focus onderzoek naar hoe we een verhaal beeldend kunnen voorstellen en hoe we een publiek emotioneel in een verhaal kunnen betrekken en zagen het eindresultaat als projecties voor het theaterstuk ‘the Pillowman’. De projecties moesten een aanvullend aspect vormen voor het stuk, door de sfeer en emoties van de verschillende verhaaltjes extra te benadrukken.
Na grondig onderzoek rond theaterstukken en scenografie hebben we een interessante tendens ontdekt: het decor van theater wordt meer en meer vervangen door projecties. Een medium goedkoper dan decorstukken waardoor de mogelijkheden bijna eindeloos worden. Met deze wetenschap legden we de link tussen de vormgever en het theater. Dat ondersteunde onze beslissing om de verhaaltjes van Katurian in het stuk uit te beelden met projec-ties in het toneelstuk. We experimenteerden met video-opnames en montages in AfterEffects, een programma voor videobewerking en Flash, een animatieprogramma. De kortverhaaltjes doorheen de dialoog zijn voor ons het meest interessant. Ze hebben elk hun eigen sfeer en emotie. Ze staan los van de hoofdscene in de verhoorkamer. Hoe zou de visualisatie en de vertelling van deze scenes worden aangepakt in het theaterstuk?
Na het bestuderen van het werk van enkele actuele kunstenaars kregen we een beter beeld over de ver-schillende mogelijkheden van projecties, zowel in de ruimte (zie Tony Oursler) als interactieve projecties (zie Andrien Mondot). Het werk van Andrien Mondot inspireerde ons om te experimenteren met nieuwe software zoals Nodebox. We programeerden een interactieve projectie gevoelig voor beweging. We hebben het script omgezet in storyboards om een duidelijk beeld te krijgen van het verhaal. We proberen een voorstelling te krijgen van de thema’s die een belangrijke plaats hebben in het hoofd-verhaal. We willen de doorlopende dialoog van het script ondersteunen met de visualisatie van de verschillende onderdelen.
We zijn op zoek gegaan naar acteurs en locaties om het storyboard te kunnen verfilmen. Al na enkele dagen hadden we een groot aantal opnames voor ‘The Little Applemen’, één van de kortverhaaltjes van Katurian.
Na verder onderzoek komen we tot de conclusie dat we de verhalen te letterlijk probeerden te visual-iseren en dat de technische aspecten van projec-ties in het theater complexer zijn dan we hadden ingeschat. Scenografie kan niet zonder acteurs en een regisseur. Dit benadeelde ons werk. Projecties in het theater mogen het toneelstuk niet domineren en moeten fungeren als achtergrond. Omdat de sce-nografie te afhankelijk is van de doelstellingen van de regisseur legde dit teveel beperkingen op onze eigen visualisatie van de Katurian-verhaaltjes.
Daarom hebben we besloten om ons werk los te koppelen van het toneelstuk. Het theaterstuk wordt achterwege gelaten en we gebruiken het script als inspiratiebron. We hechten meer belang aan een eigen interpretatie en associaties die de verhalen bij ons oproepen. Door meer suggestief tewerk te gaan, kunnen we meer experimenteren en hebben we meer artistieke vrijheid.
Zo evolueerde ons project van projecties voor het theaterstuk naar een eigen experimentele grafische interpretatie van Katurian’s kortverhaaltjes in de vorm een video installatie. Daarvoor selecteerden we 4 van de 9 kortverhaaltjes van Katurian: ‘The Pil-lowman’, ‘The Little Jezus’, ‘The Little Apple Men’, ‘The Writer and the Writer’s brother’. De boodschappen en thema’s per verhaaltje zijn heel uiteenlopend. Wat ons het meest aansprak was hoe Katurian tot deze verhaaltjes kwam. Dit wordt duidelijk in het ver-haaltje ‘The writer and the writer’s brother’.
Om onze beeldentaal zo duidelijk en zuiver mogelijk te maken voor het publiek focussen we ons meer op de werkmethodes van videokunstenaars en hun installaties. Hoe brengen deze kunstenaars hun boodschap over? Welke aanpak gebruiken ze om hun werk duidelijk te maken? We hebben geleerd dat één beeld vaak meer zegt dan een reeks afwis-selende beelden. Uitpuring van onze montages maakt de emotionele indrukken van onze filmpjes nog sterker.

WEDDING DATA NodeBox is a new software application for creating generative art using procedural graphics and a new way to approach graphic design.
I’ve made a new node: this is so called ‘butterfly’ curve, which is given by the equation in cartesian coordinates as : x=cos(u)(ecos(u)-2cos(4u -sin(u/12)5)y=sin(u)(ecos(u)-2cos(4u)-sin(u/12)5).
Some exercises with my ‘vlinder’ node and other nodes from NodeBox2. I’ve made some examples to find the best solution for my weddings data visu-alization. Experiments with form, lines and color of points.
Form and pattern of butterfly depend on the given quantity of points. I’ve used this nodes property for the weddings data visualization in my project for NodeBox2.
For my poster first I decided to place my butterflies on grid or in matrix to get the good overview of weddings data per month. I decided to use node that took butterflies one by one and moved it into X0Y asses making copies. It had been already con-nected to datastamp node. I just needed to put some data to my table, that I could used like a coëf-ficient to th e coordinates for each butterfly.
This node i’ve got when I was trying to get a node which produce a butterfly curve. But I’ve got this node by chance. I called it QuirkNode as it produce points in curl, flourish or twirl forms.

The book recounts the several visits by the old Mis-ter Eguchi to a strange, tender brothel, where older men can spend the night beside the warm bodies of sedated, very young girls. It is a story about good-byes, old age, and death.

MOEDERINSTINCT IN INKT Instinct. The word that has several aspects and caused a lot of different questions. Who does really have instincts? Man, animal, or even robots? What is man’s or animal’s instinctive behavior and how does it appear? And which aspects of the point should I research in my final work? So deep word with a wide range of meanings..
First, I put my eye on some ‘sub terms’ like: instinct and artificial intelligent; instinct to be successful and instinct for survival, and some others...
After the great and deep research I moved to the most interesting idea to compare animal’s instincts and humans’ ones and to be deeper I took maternity instinct as a main object for my research.
Looking for the point for my work, at the same time, I was trying to work with some different techniques of painting and photography. By the beginning of my work I’d been inspired by the works of some photographers like… and at that time I preferred to make my project with photos only. But over the time I decided to combine photos with my sketches I made during my work. So, I started to learn the ways of their combination. Finally, I decided in favour of photography, ink and acryl.
My work consists of two levels. From one side, I was tried to view and show all the different aspects of maternity instinct with their discrepancy and sig-nificance. From another side, this is my only view to maternity instinct shown in my work.

SURVIVAL INSTINCT
So the instinct for survival, which translates into fear of annihilation and death, is the energy behind adaptation and hence, conditioning. The child finds himself in the situation of having to be what his environment (parents) dictates in order for him to survive. So we can say that it is due to the instinct for self-preservation that acquiescence to the coercive forces in the envi-ronment occurs.The child, then, adopts his parents’ values and attitudes or rebels against them. In either case, he is condi-tioned to be and to act in certain ways, which, through the passage of time, become so ingrained that he takes them to be his identity. Slowly he forgets his true identity and becomes what he is being conditi-oned to be and to believe.

The points I took for my work were the next.The place of maternity instinct in our society and culture. What does maternity instinct mean for man, family, group and state?If maternity instinct is inherent, or it can be bring up by parents, family or some other leaders among your colleagues? Can the society rules be called as ‘cage’ for instinct display?If every woman possesses maternity instinct or it can be gained with maturity, knowledge and experi-ence? And what is the age of woman when she starts to feel this instinct?Does woman have the ability to carry out her mater-nity instinct completely in our today so-called class-less society? Or it depends on here marriage stage (status), habits, traditions, conventions and fears?Why do we call maternity instinct as instinct? What are the differences or similarities between hu-man’s and animal’s instinct and which other human instincts can be worth much more than maternity one?
What is Beauty for women? And if maternity instinct could be more important for women than her neces-sity to be in fashion? Does ‘To repudiate the baby’ mean the same as ‘to abandon chick to another’s nest’? What is the differ-ence between these two activities and what are the motives to do this?And finally, what is instinct? Is it type of feel? Intu-ition? Or just a woman’s love to her baby?
All my thoughts, oversights and answers to the men-tioned questions I gathered into my book consists of illustrates only. I believe they make you think, feel and see my opinion.

TYPO INSTINCT Ik zocht naar hoe mensen instinctief communiceren. Wanneer bij conversatie uiten de instincten zich? Wat als je naar een land gaat waarvan je de taal niet spreekt? Je gaat instinctief je uitdrukken met je handen.
Uit mijn zoektocht bleekt dat handen een belan-grijke plaats innemen. Doven mensen praten via gebarentaal met hun handen. Blinde mensen lezen braille door middel van hun handen. Schrijven en typen doen we ook met onze handen. In elk land bestaan ook verschillende kleine sociale tekens met de handen; wuiven, kushandje... Hierdoor kwam ik tot mijn lettertype. Verder moest ik met handenprints en int experimenteren.
