• Islam first appeared in the Balkans in 1354 after the conquest of the Balkans by the Ottomans in the year 1352
• There are many arguments about the origin of the Muslims in the area, but many of them were people of other faiths including Bogomils (a dualist faith similar to Manichaeism)
• Others were pagans, who faced death if they did not convert to at least one of the “religions of the book” (Christianity, Islam, or Judaism)
