We had a great vocational visit to Debbie’s Seafoods last week. Not only was it very informative but a fantastic meal was enjoyed by all. What a wonderful success story. Mark and Debbie started their fishing operation from which Debbie branched out to a mobile seafood truck selling the produce that Mark had caught. Now from these humble beginning, they have built up to six trucks, a new processing facility/ retail outlet and seafood café at David-Muir Street, Slade Point. Their daughter Natalie and son-in-law Craig are part of the business. Craig being the Chef and they employee around 30 staff. This is the only place in Mackay where you can purchase your fish whole and watch the very efficient ladies fillet it, in front of you. We also welcomed three guests to this function. Geoff Morgan’s brother Donald from Boston USA, Geoff Sturdy’s son Rowan, and Doug Neville’s son Andrew. On Wednesday 26/9/18, we have our BBQ breakfast at Paget for Mackay Regional Council.

GeoffMorgan’s brother Donald from Boston USA, Geoff Sturdy’s son Rowan, and Doug Neville’s son Andrew.

On Wednesday 26/9/18, we have our BBQ breakfast at Paget for Mackay Regional Council. Thanks to those who have volunteered for this job.

Have a great week.

Yours in Rotary.

Be the Inspiration.

Last Week ’s meeting at Debbie’s Seafood was an interesting combination, Vocational Visit, Ladies Night and an opportunity for members to ask friends to join us for a meeting and see what Rotary is all about.

Some interesting Debbie’s Seafoods facts: There are approx. 700 - 1,200 kgs of fresh fish processed per week and approximately the same with prawns. However at Christmas or Easter there can be up to 12,000 kgs Cooked prawns sold. The business runs 24 /7 before Christmas. — There are only 3 distributors in Mackay that actually cook prawns on premises.

Last week meeting:

The club is the cornerstone of Rotary, where the most meaningful work is carried out. All effective Rotary clubs are responsible for four key elements:

1. Sustaining or increasing their membership base.

2. Participating in service pro-jects that benefit their own community and those in other countries.

3. Supporting The Rotary Foun-dation of RI financially and through program participa-tion.

4. Developing leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club level.

What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it. Many membershiprequirements are designed to help members more fully participate in and enjoy theirRotary experience.

A little fact is that it only takes 4 minutes to cook a basket of prawns which are then immediately placed in cold storage.

Another little fact did you know that the fastest fish is the Sailfish. (Sailfish are the most beautiful thing. Much better to look at than eat. What a shame to kill them!) Over 90% of this produce is sourced locally in Mackay and the rest of Queensland with a small percentage coming from New Zealand. This was mainly Big Oysters and Salmon. Mark and Debbie have just been notified that they have been selected as the Top 3 in the State for the Large business award and also this year for the first time for an environmental award. This is an initiative where they supply offal as fertilizer to some local farms in our district. Previous to this, they have won initially the small business award and the last two times the big business award. This award is given bi-annually. The six vans and a huge truck which I’m sure people realise do cover the Mackay district on the side of the road. One truck services Moranbah and Dysart areas weekly. They report the truck always comes back empty.

Effective Clubs/Membership

How effective is our Rotary Club of Mackay West?
