ChemChina Stays on Fortune 500 List

ChemChina CIO training seminar beginsQenos named Australian

manufacturer of the year

ChemChina held an opening ceremony, on July 1, for its deputy CIO training seminar,

with ChemChina Vice President, Ya n g X i n g q i a n g , t h e h e a d o f Peking Univers ity’s Information Management Dep’t, Wang Yuguang, and ChemChina’s deputy CIO, Zhou Guanyu, on hand for the meeting, where 49 outstanding managers from the business management and IT departments were announced for the 2-month training session.

The training will cover business strategy, information technology, business management, leadership, and communicat ion sk i l l s . The deputy-GM Yang noted that IT will be instrumental in business restructuring and upgrades and that the lack of IT specialists poses a real challenge to ChemChina and that he expects all the trainees to increase their competence and abilities and bring the company’s IT infrastructure to the next level with their training. ■

The Melbourne government recently named Bluestar Qenos manufacturer of the year,

in recognition of its contribution to local manufacturing. Qenos has made a great effort in safety management, product and project development, and sustainability over the years, with remarkable results, which improved the business and generated considerable social benefits. For example, its expansion project in Altona increases its HDPE capacity by 20 percent, which in turn increases the scale and eff ic iency of production and improves its international competitiveness. Qenos’ 100,000-t/a carbon dioxide emission reduction project, in Altona, is equivalent to cutting the emissions of 25,000 cars. And its 21-MW waste heat-based power generation project helps the Altona operation to achieve power self-sufficiency and meet the power needs of 30,000 households. The circulating water treatment equipment at Altona’s water treatment plant can save 2 billion liters of drinking water a year. These water and energy savings were recognized by the jury, who believed that Qenos had made an outstanding c o n t r i b u t i o n t o A u s t r a l i a ’s manufacturing. Senior management said that the recognition is for the combined efforts of all employees and shareholders. ■

When the 2013 l i st of the g loba l Fo r tune 500 was a n n o u n c e d r e c e n t l y,

ChemChina came in at 355th place, with its annual sales worth around $32 billion, in comparison to its last year place at 402nd. This year

has seen 95 Chinese companies (both mainland and Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan) making the list, 45 of them major SOEs. These 95 companies represent growth for the 10th consecutive year, and an increase of 16 over last year’s

f igure, just behind the 132 US companies that made the list. It is published every year by the US Fortune Magazine and is the most famous, most trusted list of its kind, with rankings based on the income of the previous year. ■

Qingping Phosphate Mine employees aid villagers

caught in landslide

When a landslide during a rainstorm hit the Qingping

Phosphate Mine, on July 8, causing tremendous losses, mine personnel made every effort to deal with the disaster, wherever they could, and helped local people in danger, as part of their responsibility as a State-owned enterprise. At 5:00 pm, July 10, the mine’s fl ood control center got a call from a villager saying that a local person, Fu Yuanzhang, was trapped in the middle of the landslide. Company leadership immediately swung into action and soon reached the site with a well-equipped rescue team and got a villager out of danger after an hour and a half of work. The disaster relief response shows that mine personnel are always ready to extend a helping hand in the shortest possible time whenever local villagers are in need. ■

The Changsha Design and Research Institute took a national fi rst place

for 2012 in engineering consulting excellence, for a feasibility study prepared for a Vientiane 120,000-t/a potassium salt plant project, of the Sinohydro Mining (Laos) Potassium Salt Co. This Vientiane project uses a drilling solution method which is safe, environmentally friendly and resource-effi cient and can signifi cantly improve product quality and cut mining costs, and is an advanced, internationally recognized technology and the first of its kind in China. This is a good

example of a large potassium chloride mining project and is important in deal ing with the shortage of potassium salt resources and lack of potassium fertilizer in China, and for restructuring the chemical fertilizer mix and stabilizing domestic supplies of potassium salt, as well as a meaningful part of China’s potassium outsourcing strategy. The project has successfully produced the fi rst batch of conforming potassium chloride product with a grade of as much as 98 percent, which meets premium-grade criteria for industrial potassium chloride. ■

Bluestar Yima gains high-tech enterprise recognition

The BluestarYima Chrome Chemical Materials Co recently joined the fi rst

group of enterprises to be recognized in Henan province in 2013 for a qualification test. The company has worked hard in recent years to develop and commercialize new technologies and get the intellectual property rights. Its liquid-phase oxidation-based chromate salt cleaning process and integrated technology is a world leader, with internally generated chromate

salt clean production characterized by high resource utilization, low per-unit energy consumption, and less chrome-containing waste. Nearly 20 technology developments using this technology have been commercialized. The company will complete a 30,000-t/a chromate salt clean production demonstration project under the 12th Five-year Plan and adopt clean production technology in chromate salt industry. ■

Bluestar International Summer Camp kicks off

Th i s y e a r ’ s 2 4 t h B l u e s t a r International Summer Camp got

off to a good start just as promised, on July 20, with 22 divisions across the country, and 980 campers in all, 26 of them the children of Bluestar’s foreign employees from France, Norway, Australia, Spain, and Brazil, as well as some from Gansu province’s Gulang county, for which Bluestar has an obligation to provide financial assistance. The opening ceremony of the first and second divisions in Beijing was

held at Bluestar heagquarters, with the ChemChina Vice President, Ren Jianming, Bluestar CEO, Robert Lu, and Bluestar Vice President, Zhang Lijun, on hand to help. Ren and Zhang presented the camp flags to the two divisions, after which campers and foreign facilitators spoke about this year’s camp theme and expressed their gratitude to Bluestar, and hopes for this year’s camp and said they will be good messengers of Bluestar corporate culture. These summer camps are a very important part of Bluestar culture

and have become a program where foreign employees and their children can learn more about Chinese companies and identify with Chinese culture, as well as a communication bridge and international culture exchange. The summer camps went international in 2009, with a permanent theme of “Bluestar, We are Family”, but with different themed activities and events carefully planned for each year. This year’s camp will have a theme of “Beautiful Planet, Beautiful Cities, Beautiful Bluestar”. ■

The Chemical Industry Southwest Research & Design Institute (SRDICI)

has done a lot this year in employee training, with the focus on a “train-the-trainer” approach for improved technical exchanges and business talks. And, it held its fi rst two-day in-house train-the-

trainer session recently in accordance with the annual training program, with good results. This approach allows trainees to familiarize themselves with presentation skills and language, which are needed for public speaking and lectures and can even help overcome

poor communication skills and help people learn more while developing team spirit. This year’s trainees said they will practice what they learned in future in-house employee training sessions and technical exchanges and business talks with people elsewhere. ■

SRDICI in-house train-the-trainer session

A two-month EL platform ERP online training session of ChemChina Oil

& Gas Corp came to a successful end recently, with 817 out of a total of 863 trainees passing, for a commendable pass rate of 95 percent. For his year’s session, the company used various ways to train its IT personnel, including ERP online training on the EL platform, which is an information-laden, easy-to-use tool

that ChemChina has made available for the professional development of Tier-3 company employees, giving them access to a large pool of resources by simply logging on. The company asks all end-users and key users of each ERP-enabled company to attend a two-month online training session. Subsidiaries set up multimedia classrooms to facilitate the application of this program,

which allows each trainee to acquire knowledge beyond the limits of their job area and become more professional and competent. The carefully designed process and curriculum of this EL online platform can help each trainee grow professionally in an efficient manner. And the training helps provide a large pool of talented people for the company and its business strategy. ■

Lin Yang

After a year of talks, a 174 million-yuan EPC contract on a

Nitielong carbon black project has been signed, together with process package and basic design contracts, for total cost of nearly 200 million yuan. This is the largest EPC agreement the China Rubber Group Carbon Black Research & Design Institute(CCBI)has ever snapped. It began talking with Nippon Steel, in March 2012, and spent 14 months working on the EPC contract, with the project team holding numerous negotiations with the Japanese. In the face of some serious demands by the Japanese, the project team made a solid case and, after patiently explaining and meticulously analyzing the s ituation, f inal ly reached an agreement with the Japanese. ■

The Bluestar (Beijing) Chemical Machinery Co (BCMC) signed a

contract with the Chittagong Chemical Industry Co, recently in Bangladesh, on a 20-t/d ion membrane caustic soda polar pitch project, marking another step into international markets. In the several years, the number of new projects in China’s alkali chorine market has fallen dramatically, so BCMC has been active in looking at various solutions, quickening the

pace of technical innovation and building brand image, while examining the gap between it and its foreign competitors. A greater effort has been made in marketing and after-sales service, improved cost control, process management, and product quality, and the company has increased its market share. This new contract will help the company increase its brand awareness in Bangladesh and tap into the South Asian market. ■

I’m happy because I’m sporty

There’s an old saying that goes, “Rest breeds rust”. But, after the

stress of work, we need a bit of sport to make our spare time richer. So, there are always figures seen running wildly on the football pitch, serious contests on the basketball court, tough competitions on the badminton

court, and a show of skills in the table tennis area. Sports not only build us up physically but also help us relax and feel a sense of pleasure. Winning or losing doesn’t matter; what really matters is that we unleash our pent up feelings and find happiness, a happiness that can extend to our job and make

us more efficient and lighthearted in our work. This issue captures some wonderful moments on playing fields so we can share their happiness and joy they get from sports.
