Hail Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy;

hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope!

To thee do we cry, poor banished children of

eve; to thee do we send up our sighs

mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate,

thine eyes of mercy towards us;

and after this our exile, show unto us the

blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

O clement ,O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

P. pray for us ,O holy Mother of God.

C. That we may be made worthy of the

promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Lord Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father and

Mary Immaculate, give to our young people

the generosity necessary to follow your call

and the courage required to overcome all

obstacles to their vocation. Give to parents

that faith, love and spirit of sacrifice which

will inspire them to offer their children to

God’s service and to rejoice whenever one of

their children is called to the priesthood or

religious life. May your example and that of

your Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph

encourage both young people and parents

and let your grace sustain them.

Amen

Gospel Reflection for the Third Sunday

Ordinary Time

Passion and Purpose What makes a great orator? What makes them

more persuasive? How do they influence people

to take action? Great orators have something in

common. A great speaker is driven by his or her

passion. Passion is infectious. Great speakers

keep it simple. They use short sentences. They

use everyday language to make complicated

topics clear and understandable. A great speech

is more than just a clever argument, a great

speech comes from a person that throws their

weight and their personality behind their beliefs.

When Jesus is invited to stand up and preach

back at his own hometown synagogue he

chooses his reading with care. What Jesus

chooses to read is to be a statement about his

own mission priorities. He chooses to speak of

social injustice. ―The Spirit of the Lord is upon

me,‖ he reads, ―… because he has anointed me

to proclaim glad tidings to the poor, liberty to

captives, sight to the blind, freedom to the

oppressed.‖ Then Jesus points to himself as the

fulfilment of the ancient prophecy before

handing back the scroll and sitting down. Jesus

has obeyed all the rules of public speaking, he

has considered the purpose of his reading,

chosen words that will best convey his purpose,

and delivered them powerfully and succinctly.

How will Jesus‘ listeners respond to his claim?

What would our own response have been?

Would we have been inspired and motivated to

hear Jesus speak these words? Would we

suddenly see the ancient prophecy as just that,

an ancient prophecy, or as mission to be

fulfilled under Jesus‘ leadership? Could we

begin to imagine the poetry of these words

resonating two thousand years later? Only very

few of us have the charisma to communicate in

the way Jesus obviously did, but there are other

ways to communicate and other ways to

evangelise. If we want to influence those around

us, we need to take a leaf from Jesus's book and

put some passion into our purpose.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 27th January

Torn From Home

The theme for HMD 2019 'Torn

from home' encourages us to

reflect on how the enforced loss of a

safe place to call ‗home‘ is part of

the trauma faced by anyone

experiencing persecution and genocide. ‗Home‘

usually means a place of safety, comfort and

security. On HMD 2019 we reflect on what

happens when individuals, families and

communities are driven out of, or wrenched

from their homes, because of persecution or the

threat of genocide, alongside the continuing

difficulties survivors face as they try to find and

build new homes when the genocide is over

Presentation of the Lord February 2nd

Simeon had waited all his life to

see Jesus. The Holy Spirit had

promised him that he would live

long enough. When Mary and

Joseph presented the baby at the

temple, Simeon said, "Now, Lord,

you have kept your promise, and

you may let your servant go in peace. With my

own eyes I have seen your salvation, which you

have prepared in the presence of all peoples."

Seeing Jesus satisfied Simon's life. We are

prompted to ask what would satisfy us in our

lives. Are the goals we set worth a lifetime of

wanting, as Simeon's was?

Candlemas February 2nd

The name Candlemas comes

from the traditional

observance of blessing candles

and distributing the candles to

worshipers. The candles recall the lights of

Christmas. The candles also symbolize Simeon's

words to Mary and Joseph in Luke 2:32 that

Jesus would be "a light to lighten the Gentiles,

and the glory of thy people Israel."
