TOP STORIES

I am delighted to welcome you to my

newly redesigned newsletter. I hope you

find the new format both informative and

accessible and welcome your views.

One of my key duties as Police and Crime

Commissioner is to ensure that

Cambridgeshire Constabulary has the

resources it needs to keep people safe. As

we enter 2018 this means looking at the

budget we need for the next financial

year – 2018/19.

The Constabulary recently signed off a

new local policing model which reduces

management layers and focuses on

resources on the front line. This will result

in an increase of 50 warranted officers

across the county over the coming year.

On top of this, increasing the policing part

of the council tax by £1 per month (for

households in Band D properties) will

allow us to recruit an additional 55

officers. That is why I am asking members

of the public throughout January to let

me know their views. You will find a link

to a short survey on page 2. I hope you

will take the time to respond.

We recently marked the first anniversary

of our county-wide Sexual Assault

Referral Centre, The Elms, in

Hinchingbrooke. I am pleased to see the

Centre receiving national recognition and

being held up as a beacon of best

practice. We should be proud of our

achievement in ensuring victims of these

serious offences are wrapped up in a

blanket of care and support.

Finally I was pleased to donate a number

of decommissioned laptops to help Rape

Crisis Partnership Cambridge and

Peterborough support victims. The work

they do is essential in helping victims

recover.

”By increasing the policing part of the council tax by £1 per month

(per Band D property), or 23p per week, this relatively small increase

would significantly increase our ability to respond, investigate and

deter people from criminality"

Jason Ablewhite

”I am delighted to be joining the Commissioner as his Deputy. I believe that my operational

policing experience along with providing scrutiny on various

council committees will be valuable in fulfilling the role.”

The four factors most closely linked to fatal road collisions are:

So please, slow down, cut back on the distractions, wear a seatbelt and don’t

ever drive after drinking!

Police launch mobile phone

campaign

Cambridgeshire police are launching a

week-long campaign from Monday 22nd

January to raise awareness of the

dangers of using a mobile phone whilst

driving.

The campaign encourages members of

the public to #PutItDown in order to

combat a growing trend of mobile phone

use behind the wheel.

The campaign is supported by local

councils and Cambridgeshire Fire and

Rescue Service across the three counties

of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and

Hertfordshire.

Tackling Road Safety

The Commissioner outlines what is being

done to help prevent further road

casualties:

Last year the Commissioner funded a

dedicated Police Casualty Reduction

Officer, PC Jon Morris, who is now

working in partnership with other

agencies to reduce the number of

collisions. Drive IQ, a web-based learning

programme was also rolled out to schools

and colleges across the county to educate

young people on how to keep both

themselves and others safe while driving.

See the box below for more road

safety information, or go to:

SpeedWatch update

Across Cambridgeshire there are over 120

speed watch teams made up of local

volunteers. The teams are generally

supported by Parish and Town councils as

part of a traffic management plan.

Volunteers are trained to use speed

indicator devices which display vehicle

speeds. Registered owners of any

vehicles seen to be exceeding the speed

limit is sent an advisory letter by the

Constabulary, explaining that speeding is

unacceptable to the local community and

asking them to be more considerate.

To set up a scheme or find out if there is

one near you, visit: http://speedwatch.info/.

“Too many lives have been devastated as a result of people using mobile phones behind the

wheel. #PutItDown will help reinforce the dangers involved and

remind people that if you use a mobile phone while driving, you

significantly increase your chances of being involved in a serious,

even fatal collision. Together we need to continue doing everything

we can to make using mobile phones while driving as socially unacceptable as drink or drug

driving.”

Jason Ablewhite

”Over the last few months, we have sadly seen far too many

serious and fatal incidents on our roads. Whatever the cause these

incidents have devastating consequences for the victims and

their friends and families. Tackling road safety remains a high priority

for me”
