As a result of globalization in recent years, there are more and more cross-

cultural marriages happening in Taiwan. However, cultural differences make it

difficult for those foreign spouses to blend in with local family members,

especially parents-in-law. We present "Fami+1", an interactive system including 4

prototype designs to help spouses in cross-cultural couples to improve the

relationship with family during the newly-married period.

24

Page 15: Jasper's portfolio

Research ProcessFollowing a user-centered design approach, the team began the research by

interviewing several cross-cultural families in order to understand the cross-

cultural marriage situation and the different demands among Taiwanese parents,

foreign spouses and Taiwanese spouses. The data collected from the interviews

was built into work models to help visualize the condition of cross-cultural

marriages and identify the problems easily.

After the research, we identified three personas based on the information

we collected which shows particular user types, needs and preferences.

Contextual Inquiry

Persona

To distinguish the varied needs and problems for the different roles in

cross-cultural families, we interviewed 8 potential users of our system,

including 2 Taiwanese parents, 2 foreign spouses, 3 Taiwanese spouses and

one cross-cultural couple. These interviews showed us that most of the

cross-cultural family members wanted to get close to each other, but they

failed to do so because the following obstacles cause distance them

relationships.

1. Different family values between East and West

2. Language difficulties

3. Taiwanese parents' difficulty opening up

4. Foreign spouses' lack of awareness what parents want

26

Page 17: Jasper's portfolio

As shown in the diagram, the main goal of the design is to help both sides

understand their divergence from a different culture.

Based on the user study which reveals the problems between foreign

spouses and their parents-in-law, we hope to provide a supportive service

which is designed to meet the expectations for connection within families.

Design Goal

PROBLEMS1. Different family values

2. Language difficulties

3. Taiwanese parents' difficulty opening up

4. Foreign spouses don't know what parents want

1. Remind the culture and parents’ need

2. Language help on the mobile

Evaluation and DiscussionAfer the concept development we interviewed two couples to ask for their

comments and modify our concepts.

Page 18: Jasper's portfolio

System Diagram

Through several iterations of prototyping and evaluation, our final design

is presented as a long-term continuous family interaction system

"Fami+1”We create different levels of activities with an upgradable system

to help foreign spouses overcome difficulties step by step. There are some

basic problems such as language barriers, can be resolved through

learning but others, like different family values, take a long time to really

experience and understand. This upgradable system may not only drive for

self-improvements, but also to reinforce the family bond.

Fami+1–for the parents-in-law- consists of an electronic pet, and a family

TV channel, as well as a mobile reminder application and an editable web

platform –for spouses- designed to be a familiar interface for the two

different generations. The parrot-like electronic pets and a TV channel

showing shared information or pictures from the spouse will be placed in

the Chinese parent's house, providing a user-friendly media outlet to make

parents more willing to interact with their foreign in-laws and show their

consideration for the couple. Foreign spouses are able to receive live

updates about their parents'-in-law anywhere through their plug-in

mobile reminder and can also share information about and with the family

through editing the content of their web platform.

Final Concept

Mobile reminder The mobile reminder is a plug-in

application for a smart phone.

Using Google map, foreign

spouses can be notified at the

right time with the required

information about family rules,

cultural manners, taboos, and

parents' habits. In addition,

foreign spouses can use the

mobile application to learn

Chinese and record greeting

words with the phone.

Web platform Web platform is Fami+1's central

system. Both the foreign and

native spouses can edit the

content of the reminder and the

calendar on the web platform.

Through connecting with the

parrot, the foreign spouse is able

to know the current status of the

parrot and what other unlocked

advanced functions can be

developed.

30

Page 21: Jasper's portfolio

The parrot-shaped pet is a metaphor of the function of learning. It also

symbolizes a foreigner learning to become a new family member. The

function of the parrot can be developed with the increasing contact

frequency between parents and the foreign spouses.

31

At the beginning, the parrot can

only broadcasts the Chinese

greeting recorded by foreign

spouses and notify parents of the

updated message on the family

TV channel.

Parrot talk: after listening to the

broadcasted recording, parents

may have some feedback; the

parrot can record parent's voice

and repeat with the parrot's tone.

Festival special: once the parrot

reaches this level of service, it can

record two different countries'

festivals. On the day of the

festival, the parrot will change its

surface pattern to a festive

version.

Pulier GO 2010 Idea Storming Design Project of National Science Council of Taiwan

Group Member : C,J Shiah C,W Sun, Y,H Chou, C,H Wong, Y,C Wang, Y,W Huang

This project is aiming to develop an eco‐friendly and emotionally supportive

service to meet Taiwanese residences’ expectation for leisure life, and in return,

to enhance the awareness of the ecology, environment and conservation, and to

pursue national sustainable development.

Pu Li is selected as the target region to deliver the proposed service designs. The

basic idea for this design study is to integrate bicycle touring into not only the

daily life of Pu Li residents, but the visitors of Pu Li as well. By providing

supportive service which are designed to meet their expectation of leisure life,

the ”Pu Li recreation cycling life style” can be used as an attraction to lure tourists

come to Pu Li to enjoy and experience the eco-friendly life style.

32

Page 23: Jasper's portfolio

Design ProcessOn the purpose to obtain a thorough understandings of users, as well as their

perspectives and expectations, the project use the contextual inquiry, by the

method of introspection and conducting interviews with residence which in order

to avoid the divergence between designers’ imagination and the facts of reality.

We went to Pu Li for the interviews. Eight participants who are local artists, tour

guide of Pu Li, B&B owner, owner of the biggest restaurant in Pu Li, long-stay

tourist and the tourist travel by bike, joined our interview.

After the research, we built up our key persona and key theme for the design

process, and hold several workshops to help designers coming out concepts, we

also asked potential users to join our workshop.

Finally, we came out six concept, based on feedback from users to modify and

select three concepts continue to develop , the final design was displayed at the

Young Designers' Exhibition in Taiwan.

Interview

Persona

In the first stage of research, we constructed the living style and context of

local people through field observations and interviews, as well as explored

the tourists expectations toward Pu Li. We visited Pu Li and invited eight

local people from different background to participate in the interview, the

subjects included: artist, practitioners of B & B, restaurant owner, long-

stay Japanese tourists. The interview was designed to realize their

comprehensions and expectations of Pu Li. We regarded the interviewee in

this stage as the “Professionals of Pu Li.”The “Recreational Living Style of

Pu Li” was established according to the local residents, and the design

needs and target was thus determined. After integrating the information

observed and analyzed the users characteristics were further defined as

the typical persona type of user, and the demand components of each

persona were thus introduced.

34

Page 25: Jasper's portfolio

Concept Development WorkshopAfter establishment of main service characteristics, designers started to

develop many available campaigns. In the process, we hosted four design

workshops with invitations of concepts or ideas of local residents and

tourists. Also, it was expected that people may reflect their ideas in the

concepts through realizing themselves.

Workshop Output

35

Page 26: Jasper's portfolio

Design ThemeThrough the first-stage interview and field observations, designers

concluded four characteristics of overall service:

SlowRevive the “Lives slowly” in agricultural stage, let the users

experience the serene and relaxed country life.

VigorThrough participating and experiencing the activities, the users may gain

sense of health, vigor and substance.

HarmonyTaking use of local resources to effectively integrate the industry and

nature, to present the distinct face of Pu Li.

Easiness Provide complete hardware equipment, sufficient instructions to satisfy

the need of sense of security for users.

SLOW EasinessHarmonyVigor

36

Page 27: Jasper's portfolio

Initial conceptAccording to the workshops and brainstorming, this research introduced

six main concepts to categorized into three types according to the

interaction between tourists and local residents:

Exhibition of the local lifeIn this part, it showed the specific humanities and sceneries through local

life of bicycles, and invited the tourists to participate in.

Providence of specific experiencesLocal residents should take the active and aggressive part, showing their

human touch rather than souvenirs or sceneries.

Creation of mutual experienceRegardless of local people or tourists, they were all participants, and create

the excellent leisure life experience of riding bicycles and interactions.

37

Page 28: Jasper's portfolio

EvaluationAgain, we went to Pu Li interviewed with a new group, formed by general

population, such as teacher, businessman, students, etc. Six concepts were

presented one by one. The goal of this interview is that the designers could

collect and analyze the feedbacks of these concepts. We adopt a user-

centered design concept, using the design tools to illustrate the concept

and access the feedbacks for the evaluation.

38

Page 29: Jasper's portfolio

Final concept

PulierGO is a set of combined service system integrated “Green and

healthy life style” into Pu Li, installation of PulierGO recorded the health

data and traces of riding, the kilometers accumulated in bike activities may

turn into points which may exchange goods or service in the traditional

weekend market around Pu Li. No matter local residents or tourists, they

may strive for an environment-protected and healthy life.

39

Page 30: Jasper's portfolio

Concept Scenario

After receiving the message or leaflets, the family prepared for the holiday

trip. Go out with pleasure after installing puliferGO. In the riding, they

sense the pulierGO is about to ran out of electricity, therefore they take use

of the leasing machine with their account, to replace for a new pulierGO.

After arriving the market, the bicycle was parked in the free parking and

maintenance zone, and they start to experience the foot massage, hair-

cutting and parent-children art creation, all of the above may be

discounted using the points accumulated in pulierGO. In the afternoon, the

cool weather makes everyone gathered for an open-air movie and free

chats. On the way riding home, they acquired their riding records through

accessing to their account to the leasing machine. At the same time, the

riding today is also updated for the future.

40
