Growing up in a rural village I never

dreamed I could own my own business.

Then one day I went to a learnership seminar held by

SANRAL.

I learned to build access roads and after qualifying I was awarded a contract to build roads for SANRAL.

Now, I have 12 people working for my company.

These people can now feed their families.

”We are committed to growing

SMMEs and creating entrepreneurs like Nkazie Sicaba, because we know

that growing skills for better roads makes for a healthier economy.

2nd Annual SANRAL Chekicoast Road Safety Art Competitionhe South African National TRoads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) announces its2nd

annualChekicoastRoad Safety Art Competition. Promising student and learner artists are encouraged to submit art entries of their road safety creations made on A3 cardboard, paper or foam board illustrating how we can best share roads, respecting all road users whether on foot, in cars, on bicycles, or driving large trucks. This year's 'Roads are yours, roads are mine, roads are ours' theme seeks to amplify the messagethat South Africa's roads are owned by all South Africans and must be

shared. “Each of us has equal rights to use our roads and we count on each other to make the journey safer and smoother,” says Elna Fourie, Road Safety Education & Awareness Manager at SANRAL. “This must be what drives submitting artists' interpretation and illustration of road safety issues in their created works.” Categories range from foundation phase - Grade R-3 and Grade 4-6, Grade 7-9, Grade 10-12, and university students year 1-3. Winners in each category stand to win a R5000 gift voucher while the overall winner of the competition

stands to win R25 000 in cash. The competition closes on 30 September 2014, and all artwork must be sent or delivered by this date. SANRAL encourages entries from learners and student artists – whether fledgling or experienced artists. All entries need to be properly identified, providing name, grade, name of school or universityand contact information in pen on the back of the artwork. University students need to submit with their artwork proof of registration at a South African tertiary institution.

“This is an inspiring initiative and we call on all entrants to add sufficient elements that link to the theme, while making use of correct traffic signs and signals. “We were so impressed with the calibre of entrants from the inaugural competition that we look forward to this year's submissions which will no doubt represent exceptional artists while in turn assist in entrenching responsible behaviour in all road users,” says Fourie.

Important dates for participating entrantsArt Competition opens 25 August 2014Deadline for receiving entries 30 September 2014Announcement of the Winners 13 October 2014 The prize giving will be held at a gala event scheduled for Cape Town during the month of October 2014, awarding the six categories. All entries are to be hand delivered or posted for the attention of Mrs HS Fourie at The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd. Postal Box 415, Pretoria, 0001.

Pastor Ngcobo studied BA Theology Degree at Heidelberg College in Cape Town. He completed his studies in 2012 and was employed by the Seventh Day Adventist church in 2013. This is his second year in the ministry and has already been to 4 districts.

He started off in Haamanskraal near Pretoria, then went to Polokwane, he then went to Nelspruit and for the last 3 months he has been in Ermelo at Wesselton SDA Church. So far he says that he is in love with Mpumalanga. Mpumalanga, he says, is not too busy and its very relaxed. The people in Ermelo have even become his family away from home.

Ngcobo believes that the Lord has been directing all his moves so that he would end up in Ermelo for a reason. Initially, he had protested against being sent to Ermelo but he says that he has learnt so much as a person and has grown with knowledge he does not think he could have acquired anywhere else.

“I have also seen the need for God in this part of the world, the harvest is plenty but the workers are few. This is one of the things that I have seen as the reason why I have been sent for to Ermelo; to bring God here in my own unique way. God has a purpose for all of us and we should be grateful where ever he sends us and asks us to do because at the end it will only benefit us.” Says

Pastor Ngcobo. The only way one can trust in God's plans and have faith in them is to have faith in him just like the woman who had so much faith in him that she believed that if she could only touch the seam of his garment she would be made whole.

This is one of his favorite stories in the bible found in Mark Chapter 5. It teaches us that no matter how bad our situation looks not matter how impossible to solve, that even when hoping doesn't make sense anymore keep believing in God because he will reward that faith with an answer. “I pray God continues to keep all of us in his care and that we never forget that he is coming back soon.” He concludes.

Gauteng Women Unite For EmpowermentReferring to the number of jobs employers previously earmarked for men, Mboxa acknowledged that South Africa has made visible progress in promoting gender equality and empowering women through progressive policies.

Although the country is on the right track, Mboxa said a lot still needs to be done.“We are not out of the woods yet. Even after 20 years of democracy, the girl child still remains the most abused in society.

“I feel like we are treating the symptoms and not the real problem. For us to move forward, we need men to be involved. They must be part of these conversations and part of the solution.”

Participants recommended that government must step up affirmative action by making companies commit to the cause.

Women's Month

The meeting was held under the theme '20 Years of Democracy: Moving Women's Agenda forward through Radical Socio-Economic Transformation'.

It was an opportunity to obtain inputs from women's organisations, women in different sectors and interfaith organisations on priorities for Gauteng's gender policy and programme as part of 'Womens Month celebrations.

The month of August is Women's Month, as government declared 9 August a public holiday in commemoration of the 1956 Women's March.

This year's Women's Month is significant in that South Africa marks 60 years since the signing of the Women's Charter on 17 April 1954 in Johannesburg. Furthermore, it is 20 years since the adoption of the 1994 Women's Charter for Effective Equality. The country also celebrates 20 Years of Freedom.

Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said the engagement was part of government's programme to take women development in the province forward.

“This is an opportunity to build social capital and partnerships in taking forward gender equality,” she said.

In his address, Premier Makhura said the Gauteng government has put in place the 10-Pillar Programme of Action to radically transform, modernise and re-industrialise the province, in line with the National Development Plan.

This 10–pillar programme, according to the Premier, will get citizens to participate in transforming society.

Among other things, the plan talks to the renewal of townships and revitalisation of the township economic as part of turning townships into thriving centres of educational, cultural, intellectual and social and economic excellence.

“We want women to take centre stage in all the ten pillars of our transformation because when you empower women, you empower the whole nation.”

Premier Makhura said government has made strides in employing and empowering women.

“However, we are far from where we want to be. Yinde lendlela (the road is long), especially with regards to involvement of women in the economy,” he said.

According to Premier Makhura, the provincial government will introduce programmes to attract and empower women to the economy. He also urged women to be active citizens.

“Don't wait for government. We want you to organise yourselves in cooperatives and enterprises… government will provide you will the skills.”

The Premier said the issues raised in the dialogue will form part of the programme of action for the province. – SAnews.gov.za

Johannesburg – Women from around Gauteng on Wednesday gathered in Newtown to share their hopes with the province's first citizen on how government can improve their lives and strengthen gender equality.

The session was not only a chance for women's organisations to interact with Gauteng Premier David Makhura, but it was a platform for women to share their views and opinions on what is needed to push women emancipation to the next frontier.

The women were unanimous in the belief that quality education is one of the fundamental elements required for women to be truly emancipated.

Gwen Kunene (63), from Izwelonke Women's Forum in Benoni, was one of the

participants in the session. She believes that it is only through education that societies can be transformed to produce a capable generation of young people, especially women, with the requisite skills geared towards the needs of the economy.

This, she said, will be paramount, especially now that the new government has put economic transformation at centre stage to help address the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment.

“We still live in an unequal society, regardless of which sector one is in. I am of the firm belief that education can help us bridge the gap and help equalise us as women and move the country forward,” Kunene said.

Her views were shared by Sheila Eland, who

said even though women's participation in the economic has improved since 1994, youth still faced challenges.

“Government needs to pay special focus on… the country's youth. Our youth are roaming the streets with qualifications and no work because employers are reluctant to hire people with no experience. This needs to change,” she said.

She said more resources should be put towards programme that give youth access to training, work experience, jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Another participant, Agnes Mboxa, pointed out that great strides have been made in improving the status of women under the democratic government.

Government once again reassured South Africans that it has no plans to nationalise people’s hard earned pension funds.

It should also be noted that those cashing out their pension or provident funds before retirement will not only get less money than they would had they preserved, but they may be taxed on early withdrawals and no longer enjoy the tax advantages.

The various retirement reform proposals seek to:

Encourage individuals to provide adequately for their own retirement and the needs of their dependents and to provide for retirement funding as part of the remuneration contract.

Make retirement funding arrangements cost-efficient, prudently managed, transparent and fair.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lusufi, has announced that from next month his department will open a new school every week, until the end of the year.Speaking at the launch of a new high school in Soweto, the MEC said in total 17 schools will be opened in a bid to ensure that every child in the province gets education closer to where they stay.“We want every child to get a good education in a good school,” he said.He added that his department was determined to ensure that every learner in the province was able to compete at international standards.MEC Lesufi and Gauteng Premier David Makhura handed over the

newly built Freedom Park Secondary School in Devland, in Soweto, on Thursday. The new school, which will accommodate about 1000 learners from the area, will be open for learning during the fourth quarter of the year. The state-of-the-art school boasts 25 classrooms, three laboratories, a computer room and a library. It further features a sports facility building, soccer or rugby ground, canteen and courts for netball, tennis and/or basketball.MEC Lusufi appealed to the local community to take good care of the school.

Mandla Sithole, a parent who came to witness the handing over of the new school, told SAnews he was grateful for the school as it will reduce the long distances learners have to travel to neighbouring townships to get to school.“It is a big relief,” he said.Gauteng Premier David Makhura told the community members gathered at the event that the school reaffirmed government’s commitment to provide state of the art infrastructure to communities which have been previously under serviced.“We are still going to build more schools, houses and hospitals,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

MEC to open a school every week

The empowerment of women in infrastructure development was reinforced and celebrated at a roundtable discussion hosted by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) to commemorate Women's Month.

The event was addressed by Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga who emphasised that women must play a more important role in the economy of the country.

"Traditionally, women and engineering were not two words that went together. But that older world ethos has changed. From a base of 20 or so a decade ago, there are about 1000 women engineering undergraduates currently studying at South African universities and technikons.

"However, despite the progress made in closing the gender gap and making more opportunities available for women in business, South Africa's construction industry is one place where being a woman is still a major challenge," said Chikunga.

"To help address the underrepresentation of women, government has invested R3.2 trillion towards infrastructure investment projects with R845 billion earmarked for the implementation of infrastructure programmes.

She said she wanted to see 50% of women in managerial positions and more women engineers working with SANRAL.

Nompumelelo Pakade, SAWIC (South African Women in Construction) National President said: "It is imperative that contractor development programmes (CDP) are cemented to promote skills

development. For women empowerment to be sustainable, training needs to be followed by work opportunities. CDPs create an enabling environment for contractor development, allowing for targets to be set, the growth process to be monitored and evaluation to be conducted at the end of a particular period."

"SANRAL's commitment to ensuring women feature very prominently on the agenda of meeting procurement requirements is very reassuring," said Fusi Makhasane, Deputy Chairperson of the South African Network for Women in Transport.

The subject of credit has always been surrounded by myths and urban legends, and for years, many people have been confused and sometimes even afraid when it came to learning about credit reports and scores. We'll help take the mystery out of understanding your credit by dispelling some popular credit myths.

MYTH 1:It is a myth that your credit record can only be accessed by credit lenders.FACT:You can access your own credit record any time you like. This can be done once a year for free from each of the credit bureaus, or for a small fee at any other time during the year.

MYTH 2:It is a myth that you can be blacklisted by credit bureaus if you are a bad payer.FACT:Credit bureaus cannot 'blacklist' you. All they do is record your credit behaviour, both good and bad. So this means that a one-sided report showing only negative information is impossible, and

therefore being blacklisted is also impossible.

MYTH 3:It is a myth that credit bureaus are responsible for deciding whether to give you credit or not.FACT:Credit bureaus do not decide whether or not to give you credit. They just store information about how you have paid your debt in the past, and on approval, give this information to people wanting to give you credit.

MYTH 4:It is a myth that you cannot challenge your credit report if you think it is wrong.FACT:If you think the information on your credit report is inaccurate, you have every right to challenge it at any time.

MYTH 5Once a credit score is bad, it can never be rebuilt.FACTA credit report is really a credit history, and credit can be rebuilt over time. It doesn't just show the way things are today; it keeps a

record of all credit opened in a consumer's name. It will indicate which items are closed or inactive, but the history remains nonetheless. Late or missed payments can stay on someone's report for up to seven years. Rebuilding credit means paying on time, looking for better credit options, and learning more about money and credit. Additionally, the longer a credit history is without negative information, such as late payments, the better. The older negative information is, the less significant it becomes.

MYTH 6Checking a credit report will hurt your score.FACTIf consumers access their own credit reports, it does not have any effect on their credit scores. Reviewing a credit report results in what is called a “soft pull,” or “soft inquiry,” meaning it will only be seen on a personal credit report. When a consumer applies for credit, the lender will review the applicant's credit report, and a “hard inquiry” will be added. Hard inquiries are shown to other lenders because they may represent new debt that doesn't yet show on a credit report as an

account. Hard inquiries can affect credit scores. Everyone should check their reports at least annually. It's part of good credit management.

MYTH 7A divorce does not impact credit scores.

FACTDivorce proceedings don't affect credit reports or credit scores directly. However, the financial issues that are embroiled in the divorce process often involve joint credit accounts, and those very much affect credit history and credit scores.MYTH 8The best way to improve credit scores is to pay off all accounts and close them.FACTIt's actually partly true. Paying off all debts is one of the fastest ways to improve credit scores. Closing accounts, though, can hurt credit scores. One of the most important elements in credit scores is the proportion of total balances to the total credit limits. Paying off debts lowers that proportion, improving credit scores. However, closing accounts eliminates some of the

available credit limits, making the balances appear to be higher compared to the overall limits.MYTH 9Asking for lower limits will help your credit.FACTHaving sizable credit limits is a good thing for your scores, as long as you don't use them to run up debt. Lenders like to see a big gap between your available limits and the amount of credit you're actually using. A lower limit reduces that gap, which can be bad news for your credit scores. Of course, if you can't trust yourself not to use your available credit, the damage to your credit scores may be the least of your worries. Otherwise, though, you probably should leave your credit limits alone.

MYTH 10Only credit card companies and financial lenders are interested in my credit.
