personal stateMent

as a student of architecture, soon to enter the professional world, it

is my belief that architecture should always have a human focus. architects should create buildings which are designed to serve the occupants. the comfort and wellbeing of the constituents should be the primary consideration given to all design decisions.

i also feel that as an architect, my role in society is to design buildings that not only function well as individual isolated environments, but also

function within a larger urban context, responding to both physical and social considerations. as the united states has become more and more decentralized, i feel that it is the architect’s responsibility to bring some sense of urban quality back to suburbia with the buildings she designs.

architecture should never be created in isolation, it should always be informed by it’s surrounding built environment, either in reverence to this environment or to help correct inconsistencies within this environment. in this way, architecture can have importance on a social level. it can connect people in diverse areas, and it can reconnect communities.

on an even larger scale, i feel that architects have a responsibility to

create useful and healthy buildings for the global environment. architecture should seek to improve its surroundings by having a positive impact on the environment rather than a negative one.

an archival building represents an abstraction of human knowledge and our relationship with the world as a whole. the records stored here are the connection humanity has to the past, so they must be preserved to connect past, present, and future.

as a result, this building must serve two “occupants”, the geological data making up the archives, as well as the workers and visitors who need access to this data and will be using this space everyday.

the program for the kansas energy Center must incorporate the needs of four clients under one roof, while also providing common facilities

proGraM DevelopMent


the common facilities must serve all three entities, so all of the offices should be in close proximity to them. these spaces will most likely serve as the main entry for the building, providing the buffer space from the outside to the three geological enti-ties.

additionally, an outdoor common space should also be included. this could be an area where workers can eat their lunch and escape from the daily grind.

the society needs to be the most prestigious and most welcoming to visiting members. the library and filing area will need special mechanical considerations, as the machines in this area tend to over heat the space.

the survey has the largest storage needs. offices in the space are relatively minimal, as the main employees will work in the sample processing area. this area needs to be close to vehicular drop off since this is where new samples will be delivered 24 hours a day.

the kCC has the most office space. these are used by lawyers and geologist s or “knowledge workers”. these spaces should provide aesthetic pleasure and a healthy working environment. this means they should have day-light and views to the outside

passive sustainaBle Measures


During the summer months, the exterior sun shades on the south facade will block any direct rays, when the sun angle stays between 60 and 80 degrees. By blocking the rays before they pass through the glass windwos, heat gain is greatly reduced.

in the winter, when the sun angle stays between 30 and 40 degrees, sun rays will directly enter the offices on the south side, heating their concrete flooring. the concrete will absorb the solar energy, and give off warmth, heating the office. when temperatures on the south side get too hot, this temperature can be regulated by the vrf system. excess heat will be redistributed to colder areas on the north side.

the “academic village” is a master plan for aubervilliers, a suburb of paris, in what is considered a “down and out area”. the goal is to bring some life back into this community by creating a hub for students and tying the area back to the paris core

the park along the canal and library/student union act as anchors for the major pedestrian and vehicular axes.student housing is interspersed within family units and townhomes..student housing units are grouped into dorms for 8 students with shared kitchen facilities.Green spaces are checkered throughout the neighborhood to provide contrast between tight private spaces and open public areas.

this project is designed to be a multi-use, high-rise, luxury residential complex. its massive scale and overall design takes cues from the idea of the “megastructure” and its role as a city within a city. the design was executed in a team of two students.

the site for the megastructure is located in the heart of Chicago along the river, just south of the sears tower. as a result, the Chicago river plays an integral role in the design of the complex.

apartMent layouts


the set-up for the individual units takes cues from Corbusier’s unite d’Habitacion. the apartments interlock so that each unit has both a terrace facing the courtyard and a curtain wall looking out on the river or Chicago skyline. the terraces are designed for both winter and summer use. in the winter they become a greenhouse with glass encloser. in summer, these glass panels open up to create an outdoor space.

the river Metropolis is an inwardly focused building. three separate structures line the street corner and river, with apartments terraced into a shared courtyard with green space. along the street edge, the terraces are carved out. this creates a plaza area with commercial amenities that can be accessed by the public. on the river side, this carved out space is used as a marina with boat docking for residents.

This library is designed for downtown Lawrence in a site next to the current Lawrence Art Center. It was important that the design be civic in nature and utilize its urban context. The program required a public outdoor plaza to encourage pedestrian traffic to the library. This design also utilizes its proximity to the art center by creating a shared outdoor space.

The building is divided into the main library and a separate structure with meeting room and community facilities. These two structures are connected with an overhang that also connects the library to the art center, merging the two public entities.

The design for this plaza developed through study of historical urban outdoor spaces. This led to the idea of compression and openness.With compression taking place between the community building and library, and openness in the parking lot and plaza

this classroom is designed to be an addition to ku’s campus. it is lo-cated on the edge of potter lake in a wooded area. the structure is meant to function as a classroom for environmental classes and as a pavilion where events could be held. the focus on environmental awareness is meant to manifest in the aesthetic of the building. this structure is also designed with many passive heating and cooling strat-egies to conserve energy.

This Environmental Classroom is designed to offer three different teaching spaces tied together by a series of five ribs that also connect the building to Potter Lake.

The building is separated into served and serving spaces, with the serving spaces acting as a buffer on the north side.

The “ribs” tying the spaces to-gether are also trusses which are the main structural support for the building.

the development of the roof was a specific challenge, because of the placement of the house and the requirements for sight lines to the beach front. the geometry must also give adequate slope for drainage and allow for roomy ceiling heights on the interior.

structurally it is meant to “float above the house with minimal structural elements. instead of traditional columns on the exterior walls, it is cantilevered from the structure hidden in the back and interior areas.

this addition to union station’s science City is meant to educate visitors on the possibilities of new forms of sustainable energy. it also communicates how individual habits can have an impact on energy consumption. the design development phase of the project included developing layouts for the exhibit pieces and developing details for the space, such as the soffits along the walls, and the railings for the elevated areas.
