About six months ago, my colleague Jim Robinson wrote in his first drive story of the new Hyundai Elantra that by the end of this year, Hyundai intended to be the sales leader in the compact segment in Canada.

It may not take that long as Elantra sales are up 36.8 per cent over last year and the re-designed 2011 Elantra has quickly become the volume leader for the Korean brand in Canada.

In May, the Elantra sold 4,780 units to take over top spot in the country, 272 ahead of the perennial leader of the pack, the Honda Civic. Year to date, the Civic has a 2,381-unit lead over the Elantra (21,689 versus 19,308) but the gap is narrowing.

To demonstrate how competitive the compact segment is here, four other compacts rounded out the top six in overall car sales during the opening five months of the year.

They are the Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze/Cobalt, Mazda3 and Volkswagen Jetta. So with competition like this, it’s not hard to see why about 50 per cent of all Canadian car sales

understand how in such a short period of time, the stylish Elantra has become the new face of the Hyundai brand in Canada.

It embraces the ‘fluidic sculpture’ design philosophy used on the mid-size Sonata sedan. Hyundai press literature describes it as “a flowing sculpture seemingly carved by the wind (that) conveys a feeling of movement, even when standing still.”

With aerodynamic lines (its coefficient of drag is 0.28), the Elantra

has many striking details that make it stand out styling wise in the compact class.

The new-look front end is a Hyundai signature feature that debuted on the Sonata, while the flared fenders and wrap-around headlights and taillights give the Elantra a thoroughly modern look, thanks to the folks at the Hyundai design studio in California.

In fact, it’s an American car all-round because it is built at a new assembly plant in Alabama, not shipped here from Korea.

Hyundai is aiming to overtake the Honda Civic for top spot in the compact car segment with the 2011 Elantra. In May alone, the Elantra was the top-selling car overall in Canada. It features mid-size passenger volume in a compact car.

The Camaro Autobot “Bumblebee” now appearing in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, will available as an optional package in September.

The Chevrolet Camaro returns as the Autobot “Bumblebee” in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, now showing in 3D.

To celebrate, Chevrolet will offer a 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe to Bumblebee fans in the U.S., Canada, China, Japan, Europe, South America and the Middle East.

The fifth-generation Camaro previously played Bumblebee in the 2007 film Transformers and in the 2009 film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The 2012 Transformers Special Edition will be offered as an optional package on 2LT and 2SS Camaro Coupes with Rally Yellow paint.

In addition to the content offered in the popular RS appearance package, the Transformers edition will feature black rally stripes that stretch over the hood, roof, decklid and unique high-wing rear spoiler; 20-inch, black-painted wheels wrapped in high-performance summer tires; and Autobot Shield logos on the center caps and front quarter panels.

Inside, the Transformers Camaro has a black leather interior accented with yellow stitching on the instrument panel, centre console, armrests and seats.

Autobot Shield logos are embroidered on the front headrests, as well as the centre console lid.

Two dealer-installed options are also available: exclusive, 21-inch, black-painted wheels and a black ground-effects package.

Customers may begin ordering the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro in July, with vehicles arriving at dealers in the U.S. and Canada in September.

The sheet metal is all new and so too is the power train. A 1.8-litre 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder replaces the outgoing

2.0-litre engine. Called the “Nu”, it has what Hyundai calls Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing that automatically adjusts intake valve timing for maximum performance at every speed.

The new engine, which makes 148 hp and 131 lb/ft of torque, is mated with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, both new to the Elantra.

Fuel economy is outstanding, with Natural Resources Canada ratings of 6.8/6.9L/100 km city for the manual/automatic and 4.9/4.9L/100 km highway.

Those figures are in hybrid territory and come from a gasoline engine using regular unleaded fuel. Hyundai says drivers should be able to get 1,000 km on a single tank of fuel.

The flowing lines on the exterior continue inside the cabin, which is much more luxurious than the price would indicate. The centre stack is particularly well designed and stylish.

Four trim levels are offered on the Elantra. The L, GL and GLS trims have premium cloth seats, while the Limited and Limited with Nav have leather seats. Prices start at just $15,849 for the L manual and climb to $24,699 for the top-of-the-line Limited with Nav.

My tester was an Elantra Limited, priced at $22,699 and loaded to the hilt with features unheard of in cars at this price point just a couple of years ago.

Among its features are four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control with traction control, keyless entry and alarm system, six airbags, six-speaker audio system, heated front and rear seats, power moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and much, much more.

For a compact car with a shorter wheelbase, the ride is fairly smooth and only gets choppy on the worst of pavement. MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam rear suspension help smooth out the bumps.

Steering is electrically assisted, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight parking lots, yet providing some feedback when you take it through the twisties on the back roads.

Acceleration is decent for a car in this class, but the cabin gets a bit noisy at speed even though Hyundai has added extra weather stripping and other sound deadening materials.

Inside, the cabin will hold five, but four will ride more comfortably. In fact, the cabin is so spacious, the U.S. EPA lists it as a mid-size.

The seats are comfortable and supportive, although I would prefer the bottom seat cushion to be a bit longer, particularly for long-distance drives. The trunk is a generous size with a capacity of 420 litres.

Of course, you can’t forget about the Hyundai warranty — five-years/100,000 km and three years roadside assistance. It’s among the best in the market.

In the early years, Hyundai sold on price alone. Nowadays, the price is still more than competitive in the marketplace, but the content and quality are also at or near the top of the class.

With all these things going for it, no wonder the Elantra sales are off the charts and it is fighting tooth and nail with the Honda Civic as the best-selling car in Canada.

Hyundai has made huge leaps forward in interior design and the use of materials in the 2011 Elantra.

Given that a mere 185 Lagonda V12 models were built and only in the two years before the Second World War, when the British plant switched production to ammunition, seeing two of these cars displayed side by side in Vancouver is quite a sight.

Discovering that both cars have the same owners who also own a third V12 is amazing. All three are world class cars and are Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance award winners.

Bill Holt is a retired psychiatrist who spent 25 years developing a community-based mental health program in Burnaby. His wife, Liz Haan, retired after a career with IBM as a software engineer. Cars are their passion. They have their first classic car, a beautifully restored 1933 MG J2, parked in their family room.

That passion for beautiful performance cars was always there for Holt, whose grandfather started Holt Glass in 1910. His father expanded the company with a woodwork and cabinet factory that built displays and interiors for many Vancouver businesses. His father traveled all the way to Detroit in 1919 to take a mechanics course so he could maintain his own company trucks.

When Holt went to UBC to pursue a career in medicine, he drove a 1952 Jaguar MK5 drophead followed by a Jaguar XK140 coupe. A departure from

British sports cars was a new red 1967 Cougar with the big block 390 cubic inch engine, followed by a 1967 Corvette roadster which he still owns.

Later in life, he developed a rigid four point criteria for pursuing the collector car hobby: The cars he would collect needed to have great performance, innovative technology, beauty and history. The Holts decided to search for a much-coveted classic V12 Lagonda.

Although Lagonda has been building some of the world’s most exclusive cars in Britain since 1907, it wasn’t until W.O. Bentley left Rolls Royce to become technical director at Lagonda that the cars would become legendary for style, speed and innovation.

Bentley developed a 4.5 litre single overhead cam V12 engine producing 180 horsepower capable of propelling a car at 140 miles per hour. At the same time, young designer Frank Feeley was sculpting a completely new Lagonda featuring a lowered hood and raised fenders with huge lucas P-100 headlamps to convey an aura of aggressive dynamics never seen before.

Two race prepared Lagonda cars with four SU carburetors placed third and fourth at LeMans just before the war forced production to cease in 1939. This was Bentley’s triumphant return to LeMans after winning with his own cars in 1935 just before his company went bankrupt.

Bill Holt and Liz Haan purchased their first V12 Lagonda in pieces nearly 30 years ago. One of only four built with the open front cockpit and curved town car roof shielding rear seat passengers,

their Lagonda Sedanca is reputed to have been originally owned by King Edward VIII. He abdicated the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson in 1940 and became the Duke of Windsor.

This rare car had been brought to Victoria from California by British-born actor Sebastian Cabot. It was disassembled for a restoration that was never started. Bill Holt took the car to noted B.C. restorer Ed Arnold who spent a full decade completing a

concours-quality restoration. The car took third place in the class for European classics from 1925 to 1939 at Pebble Beach 1990.

Five years later, the owners drove the car to Rhode Island to start a Classic Car Club of America tour. They ‘freshened’ the car and took it back to Pebble Beach for judging in 1999 where it won in its class.

Their 1938 V12 Lagonda drophead coupe (convertible) came into their possession from former Lagonda Club president Bob Crane who used the car for touring. The classic was meticulously restored by RX Autoworks in North Vancouver in time to win third in class at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. One of only 25 built, the car is the only V12 fitted with the very rare four carburetor set-up and the other high performance engine parts used on the Lagonda that came in fourth at the 1939 LeMans race.

The 1939 Lagonda Rapide that was a class winner at Pebble Beach in 2010 is one of only a dozen built and was also restored by RX Autoworks. The car had been owned by several Lagonda

collectors in Southern California and the Holts waited for years for the chance for ownership. The restoration of the ‘very tired’ car was challenging with RX Autoworks manufacturing parts that couldn’t be salvaged. Other parts like the crankshaft and connecting rods for the V12 engine had to be made.

The Lagonda Rapide V12 came second in its class at Pebble Beach. One judge called it a perfect car but it was beaten by an elegant French-built Delage. “We’re done restoring now,” Liz Haan says. “It’s a bit of work to keep all three cars up and we’ll concentrate on that.” She and her husband view the cars as ‘rolling art’ and representative of a significant part of automotive history. They both enjoy driving the cars and showing them to fellow enthusiasts.

In August, the couple that owns three ultra rare Lagonda V12 classics will drive their 1939 drop head coupe to Pebble Beach 2011. For the trip back, they will have a passenger – a man from Australia who owns five V12 Lagonda cars!

Ford adds fuel-efficient tires and leads technology research efforts


Even before gasoline prices began to rise, Ford Motor Company’s attention to delivering more fuel-efficient solutions for drivers was turning to tires.

Specifically the development of specially engineered, low-rolling-resistance tires designed to further improve the fuel economy of its cars and crossovers.

Four of Ford’s vehicles rated below 5.0 L/100km – Fiesta SFE, Focus SFE, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid – come fitted with these special, fuel-saving tires.

In addition, the 2011 Ford Taurus, 2011 Ford Edge, 2011 Ford Fusion and 2011 Ford Explorer have tires with enhanced technology that helps improve fuel economy.

Rolling resistance, a measure of the force required for the tire to travel down the road, is a key attribute in improving fuel economy.

A 10-per-cent-improvement in rolling resistance leads to a fuel economy improvement of as much as two per cent, according to Ford’s tire experts.

Ford’s tire team, a dedicated group of scientists studying the chemistry of tires, is also researching materials found in other products like athletic shoes to see if there is potential for automotive application.

The team is working with tire suppliers and manufacturers to evaluate these materials and ultimately to bring improved tires to market faster. Building vehicles that do not compromise performance for efficiency is important to Ford.

The 2011 Ford Mustang coupe, for example, is the first car to achieve a combination of 305 horsepower and 6.4 L/100km (hwy).

To deliver on that no-compromise promise, each component – like tires – is optimized for performance and efficiency.

The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter with electric drive provides an innovative look at changing urban mobility needs.

While the currently available, purely electrically powered scooters have been almost exclusively used inside towns and cities to date due to their performance and range, which makes them suitable for short distances only, the concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter offers a much broader spectrum of use.

The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter provides the necessary sustained output and maximum speed for safe and reliable overtaking on urban motorways and also when carrying two people.

It is also easily capable of managing hill starts on steep slopes with a pillion passenger.

The development study also has the necessary maximum output to be able to achieve acceleration figures within the important 0-60 km/h range, which are at

the level of current maxi scooters powered by a 600 cc combustion engine.

The high storage capacity of the battery allows a daily driving range of more than 100 km.

The E-Scooter concept vehicle’s battery is charged at regular household power sockets as found in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan, so no special charging station is required. When the battery is completely flat, the charging period is less than three hours.

While a coolant is commonly used for the battery in electrically powered cars, the E-Scooter concept vehicle uses an air cooling system in order to save space.

TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. has unveiled a folding steering wheel concept which retracts into the dashboard to improve driver comfort getting in and out of a vehicle.

Manuel Poyant, development manager, Steering Wheel Systems and Driver Airbags, said, “the automotive industry is being influenced by some key factors such as a more active older population and the growth of mega cities.

“As a result, vehicle manufacturers and suppliers need to find innovative solutions to improve driver accessibility and interior styling for smaller cars (A and B platform as well as electric cars).”

The foldable steering wheel concept is a prime example of technology that allows easier access for elderly people and those faced with mobility challenges.

The futuristic design of the retractable steering wheel was developed following an internal study for future steering wheel requirements.

It features two retractable handles that close fully to create a smaller

shape which then folds away into the dashboard significantly improving driver comfort and accessibility.

When the vehicle is started, the steering wheel deploys into the driving position which can be pre-set and saved by any driver into their chosen position.

The key benefit is to make it much easier for elderly drivers or other drivers with reduced mobility to get in and out of the vehicle.

Due to the significant growth of small city cars, this technology could open up the possibility for even smaller cabin designs.

Introduction of this technology could be possible within the next five years.

MG Club hosts Sports Car Enthusiasts Field Meet

Local sports car enthusiast Merritt Chisholm’s Suffolk SS100, a reproduction of the legendary 1935 Jaguar SS100, will be one of many classic vehicles on display at the Victoria MG Club’s annual summer sports car event, July 24 at Beaver Lake Park.

A long time fan of classic Jaguars, Chisholm embarked on his project by purchasing the SS100 body from Suffolk Engineering in England. He next sourced engine, transmission and other components from a donor car, a Series 2 Jaguar XJ6 with good mechanicals he found locally. All components were refurbished to new condition and installed.

The result is this stunning SS100 – a classic car from a bygone era with modern mechanicals, powered by a Jaguar 4.2 XK engine.

In addition to the SS100, other show highlights will include Jaguar E-types, MGs, Austin Healeys, Fiat 124, Miata, Sunbeam Tiger and Alpine, Jensen, Lotus and
