"Hi, my name is Amy. What’s yours?"

When I retired from teaching three years ago, I asked my first graders to give me some advice about moving and starting a new chapter in my life. One of my students was particularly concerned about my ability to meet new people and gave me this advice. "If you don’t know someone, just hold out your hand and say, ‘Hi, my name is Ms. George. What’s yours? You’ll be fine." Here it goes. “Hi, my name is Amy. What’s yours?”

I have already been blessed by meeting so many of you and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the warm welcome I have received. What an amazing church family I can now call my own! I suppose like any new family though, you are probably wanting to know about your newest member.

So, allow me to introduce myself. I am a native Memphian and have lived here all of my life. Prior to going to seminary, I taught in the CLUE program for 25 years for the then, Memphis City Schools, at Grahamwood Elementary. I loved being a teacher and have missed seeing children on a daily basis. I am so looking forward to being around children again and am hopeful that random knee hugs will appear again.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and a Master’s degree in Education. Both are from the University of Memphis (and yes, I am a big fan of the blue and gray). Three years ago, I retired from teaching, loaded up all my belongings and moved to Sewanee and what is affectionately known as the Holy Mountain (even though we realize it is really only a plateau). Going to seminary in a place that reminds everyone a lot of Hogwarts at the School of Theology at the University of South was a wonderful experience, and I will always treasure the time I spent there and the community I came to call family. On May 6th, I graduated with my shiny new Master of Divinity degree and soon loaded up again and headed back to the Bluff City. I was ordained to the transitional diaconate on June 4th and began here on June 5th.

I was blessed to be raised and formed by the wonderful people of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Memphis. Serving in varied leadership positions there has helped me, I believe, to know the ins and outs of the church from the lay perspective.

Although I have yet to find my new routine, in my spare time I enjoy reading, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. I am also a baseball junkie and a long suffering die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. And while for many years I enjoyed participating in the Memphis theatre community as an actress, I now look forward channeling my love for it as an audience member.

I am the youngest of three children and my parents and both of my older brothers live in Memphis (as do 7 of my 9 nephews). I have a furry four-footed family member named Tink, who has proudly proclaimed herself the “Episcopug” for almost 13 years.

I am humbled and excited to begin my ministry at Grace St. Luke’s. As a friend of mine summed it up perfectly recently when upon realizing I had been called here, “Oh my, Amy. You have landed in the honey pot!” In my short time here, I have discovered just how true these words are and I am grateful to be a part of such a wonderful place! –The Reverend Amy George

The Gifts of Imperfection

by Brené BrownThree-Week Book Study

July 13, 20, & 27*6:30-7:30 pm

Recovery is not a destination, but a journey that continues through both the good days and the bad and each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We make a daily choice to continue to move forward even when it may seem too difficult in the moment. In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown will engage our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate courage, compassion, and connection.

For more information, contact commission co-chairs: Lucy Owens (272-7425, [email protected]) or Shannon Tucker (281-0785, [email protected]). Location: Church of the Holy Communion, Room 310 (Carrick Room), 4645 Walnut Grove, Memphis, TN 38117. Hosted by the Addiction and Recovery Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee. *please note corrected dates

Special Friends Fellowship Club

In late 2015, the parent of a young adult with Special Needs saw a void in the community for adults with special needs that would offer them a social and spiritual outlet on a regular, and long-term basis. Answering what she described as a nagging call, she approached the diocese to explore the possi-bility of developing a program. Fr. John Burruss, Canon for Sustainable Min-istries, as charged by Bishop Don Johnson, appointed Fr. Tom Momberg, Vicar of Annunciation, to facilitate a group of representatives from across the diocese to discuss possibilities.

Over the course of several months, the committee, comprised of Justin Miller (Grace-St. Luke’s), Richard Rough (Church of the Holy Communion), Fr. Jeff Marks (St. Andrews, Collierville), Hilary Chipley (Calvary), Susan, Leigh, (All Saints'), and Janie Morris, met and the kick-off of Special Friends Fellowship Club was held on June 26 at All Saints' Episcopal Church.

Special Friends will be open to adults with developmental disabilities over the age of nineteen. The summer session will consist of four gatherings, meeting every other week. All Saints Episcopal has graciously offered meeting space for all sessions, but this will be a diocesan effort with volunteers currently coming from four participating parishes: Calvary, Church of the Holy Communion, Grace-St. Luke’s, and St. Andrew’s, Collierville. Volunteers will provide dinner and assistance with activities and worship, and will include teens, young adults, and not so young adults.

Based on the success of the summer program, it is hoped that Special Friends Fellowship Club will continue into the school year. It is hoped that additional parishes will join in the fun by volunteering to provide volunteers and food one Sunday evening a quarter. If your parish is not yet participating, you are cordially invited to volunteer with other parishes. Contact Janie Morris at 761-1020 or [email protected] for further information. Scheduled meeting dates are June 26, July 10, July 24, Aug.7. Grace-St. Luke’s day to co-host is July 24. To volunteer on the 24th, please contact Janie.

Fellowship CornerWe thank everyone who participated in a glorious night at the Shell on June 5 (pictures below). Amazing cool weather, delicious food, and great music. The Rev. Amy George had a wonderful opportunity to meet and visit with parishioners on June 26.

The committee is taking a break for the month of July but keep on the lookout for details of events planned for August. A reception will signal the start of the year for Grace-St. Luke's School, and we'll bring the summer to close with an amazing BLT Sunday on August 28. Trust us, this popular lunch is worth waiting for!

70th Annual Laymen's Conference August 19–21Dear Brothers in Christ, As the summer begins, I hope that each one of you is planning to come to the mountain for the 70th Annual Conference of the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee--which we've all come to know as the Laymen's Conference--August 19-21, 2016. Hopefully, you already received the registration flyer in the mail. The theme of this year's conference is "Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (Ps. 96:1). One of the things that I always enjoy about the Laymen's Conference is when we lift up our voices in the pavilion and in All Saints' Chapel on Sunday morning. I found three speakers—Gary Morris, Phil Madeira, and the Rev. Geoffrey Butcher—for whom music has been an integral part of their Christian faith and how music likewise has shaped us in our lives in Christ. As always, we will also have our famous rib-cooking contest Friday evening and our Saturday recreation time. You can register online at www.tnchurchmen.org—we look forward to seeing our old friends, making new ones, and celebrating our common life in Christ. Welcome and Thank You, by Amanda McGriffWe are delighted to welcome the Reverend Amy George to Grace-St. Luke’s and to Pastoral Care. Over the summer, each Pastoral Care team will have the opportunity to visit with her in a small group setting over a shared meal. I wish that we could do the same for the entire parish, because I cannot wait for everyone to get to know her. She is funny and warm, and we are very excited that she is here.

For those of us in Pastoral Care, this past year has been a season of waiting, preparation and transition. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of those who have been so supportive of this ministry during this time, especially the clergy and staff of GSL; the Rev. Russ Snapp, who served as Interim; Juan Fuentes, Pastoral Care Coordinator; the four Pastoral Care team leaders—Shelley Baur, Julia McDonald, Lillian Trotter and Kim Weiss; and all of the Pastoral Care team members. Thank you also to the parish for bearing with us as we have tried to maintain the strong Grace-St. Luke’s tradition of caring for one another in times of need.

I think it is appropriate that Amy comes to us in a green season. As the children’s Catechesis song says, “Green is for the growing time.”

Thank YouThank you to the family of Mrs. Marion Page for donating the beautiful flower arrangements from her funeral to Pastoral Care for delivery to those in need in the parish. Your generosity and thoughtfulness are truly appreciated.

Pastoral Care RequestsTo submit a pastoral care request, please complete the Pastoral Care Requests form on the GSL website under the Member Central Tab (www.gracestlukes.org/member-central/pastoral-care-requests). Requests submitted through this online form will be emailed directly to the appropriate lay staff and/or clergy. I was pleased to discover that the core Christian education program for children at Grace-St. Luke’s is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This is really one of the premiere programs available today but it takes a big commitment from the sponsoring parish, staff, and parishioners. Special classrooms, called an “atrium” are developed and teachers receive extensive training. The result is a program which offers children far more than the chance to learn a few Bibles stories or Christian songs. The Montessori-inspired approach really helps kids to take ownership of their own faith development. They not only hear the great stories of our tradition, they get to retell them with their own hands. They learn to ask questions and seek answers in a way that even some adults have yet to master.

As the education programs resume this fall, I urge you to check out Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. If you have young children, you will quickly see what a gift this is for them, well worth the commitment to show up at 9:30 on Sundays. Whether you have kids at home or not, you will be impressed by this playful yet serious program. You may want to learn more, including offering help in our classrooms. If so, contact Sharon Campbell, our Children’s Education Director ([email protected], 272-7425 ext. 224). —Andy MacBeth

Outreach Ministry

Door of Hope Gardening Project

Door of Hope, a 2016 GSL Outreach grant recipient, is a non-profit organization in Memphis with a mission to help end homelessness for Memphis' most vulnerable population by providing housing and supportive services. Door of Hope provides permanent housing for disabled individuals (mentally or physically), all of whom have been chronically homeless, and many of whom were living on the streets. The funds provided by GSL are being used to continue a raised bed garden project. The garden (see pictures below) allows the residents to engage in daily activity related to maintaining the garden and working with other individuals in the community to grow and cook the produce grown. The project is producing okra, corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and peppers. Door of Hope also uses the fresh produce to conduct monthly healthy cooking workshops, and has donated some produce this year to GSL’s More Than A Meal ministry. Door of Hope is located at 245 N. Bellevue. For more information about Door of Hope or to learn how you can become involved, please contact Porsha Goodman, executive director, at [email protected].

CALL FOR VESTRY NOMINATIONS

Do you have an interest in parish governance? Do you want to step up to a new leadership role at Grace St. Luke’s? Does the person down the pew from you have special values, skills, and enthusiasm for this parish? Now is the time to think about vestry nominations for the Class of 2017. The Vestry Nominating Committee (VNC) is meeting, discussing potential nominees and wants your input.

In considering a potential nominee, the following guide should be remembered:

The person must be a confirmed communicant of Grace St Luke’s in good standing, not less than eighteen (18) years of age, a giver of record and shall not be employed by Grace St. Luke’s Church, Grace St. Luke’s School or the Diocese.

The Vestry functions like a board of directors, overseeing policy and operations of the parish. The five new members of the Vestry will begin service in January 2017 with a Vestry Retreat in early January and monthly dinner meetings on the third Tuesday of the month. It is a three year commitment.

The person submitting a name should have some indication that the named person would agree to have their name placed in nomination if asked by the Vestry Nominating Committee.

Please submit nominations to Josh Shipley at [email protected] or call at 486-4888 by August 2nd. Other members of the VNC are Juan Fuentes, Cynthia Saatkamp, Betsy Wilson, and Ken Woodmansee.
