July25,2021,17thSundayinOrdinaryTimeFatherGerry’sHomily:InthereadingstodayweseeGod’sconcernfortheneedyespeciallythehungry.InthefirstreadingweheardhowamanbroughtElisha,themanofGod,20barleyloavesandfreshearsofgraininhissack.TheyweremeanttobeofferedasfirstfruitsoftheharvesttoGod(Yahweh),butinsteadElishasaidtheyshouldbegiventothosewhowerewithhimsotheycouldeatatatimeofgreatneed.AswithElisha,JesusgivesmorethancanbeeatentothosefollowingandbelievingHim.InthegospelJesus,movedbycompassionwhenHesawthecrowds,wasconcernedthattheyshouldhavefoodtoeatsincetheyhadfollowedHimforsometimeandwouldbehungry.So,Hedecidestodosomethingaboutit.WhenJesusmethungrypeople,Hegavethemtheonlythingthatmatteredmostatthatmoment:food,anddidsowithgreatgenerosity–allateasmuchastheywanted,andtherewerestill12largebasketsofscrapsleftover.Jesus,whoisGod,isalwaysverygenerouswithHisgifts.Arewegenerousinourdealingswithothersinsharingwhatwecanwiththem?Themiracleoftheloavesisamiracleofgreatgenerosity.WeexperiencethisgenerosityeverytimewesitdowntoeatandespeciallywhenwereceivetheEucharist.Theexperienceofgenerosityshouldenlargeourhearts,andawakeninusadesiretobegeneroustowardsthosewhoarenotasfortunateasourselves.WhatJesusistellingusisthatthosewhohaveplentyandmorethanenoughmustsharewiththoseinneed.Perhapsitisaquestionofawarenessandarealdesiretoshare.Thismaybeisagreatermiraclethanmultiplyingfoodmiraculously.So,whilstPhilipsawthedifficultiesinprovidingfood,asdidtheservantofElisha,Jesusseesthepossibilitiesandtheopportunitiesthattheoccasionoffered.Theopportunityofsharingwithotherswhateverwehave,howeverlittleitmightbe.Obviously,thesceneremindsusoftheEucharistwhichgivesusthenourishmentweneedinordertoliveourdailylivesasfollowersofJesus.WhenwegooutfromtheEucharist,wearecalledupontoliveaEucharisticlifestyle.Weareaskedtoputintopracticedaily,whatwehaveexperiencedattheEucharist:forgiveness,unity,communion,sharingtheBodyandBloodofJesus,Hissacrificeofloveforus.ThereisadirectconnectionbetweenattendingtheMass[Eucharist]andlivingaChristianlife.St.Paulinthesecondreadingspellsoutsomeofthethingswemustdoifwearefaithfilledpeople,especiallytheunityinourrelationshipwithothers.TherealChristianlifeistolearnfromJesuswhoisconcernedabouttheneedsofothersandiscallingtodothesameinwhateverwaypossible.Theneedsofmanypeoplearenotneedsoffoodtofeedtheirphysicalhunger,butmanyneedthefoodoffriendship,concern,encouragement,forgiveness,loveetc.Eachofusiscalledupontorespondtothese.Wejustneedtoopenoureyes,toseetheneedsaroundus.Problemstobefaced;peopletobeloved,respected,andlistenedto.Tobeinvolvedinhelpingothers,withourtalents,ourenergy,andourlove,isthebestandproperuseofourChristiancalling.Anditwillmakeourlifeworthyofourvocation,avocationtobringJesustoothers.
