URBAN NETWORK

6 spring 2010 (2nd year)

Page 11: Justin Krajci Design Portfolio

The goal of the project was to create a bridge between two identical urban office buildings. The following strategies were implemented in the design to create a successful bridge:

-Easy to travel bridge with plenty of viewing opportunities -The winding and curving steel pieces were used to create an interesting and pleasing visual experience-A range of gray colors were used to match the surrounding urban environment-A 10 foot wide bridge with an overhang protects the bridge and pedestrians from inclement weather

BEACH HOUSE

8 fall 2009 (2nd year)

The objective of the Beach House project was simple, design a summer vacation home for a family of four. The design placed the home above the tree line to receive proper ventilation and included separate, private areas for the children and their parents.

FLUIDITY + SURFING

The Fluidity + Surfing design transforms an abandoned oil platform off the shore of Los Angeles into a surf station. This imagined 2050 future design was based off the fluid movements that are needed to master the art of surfing. Fluid motion can be found throughout the project.

Page 16: Justin Krajci Design Portfolio

Also the design recycles steel from the pre-existing platform for use in the steel facade surrounding the station, thus lowering the overall carbon foot-print of the project.

GRESHAM SMITH COMPETITION

14 spring 2011 (3rd year)

The objective of the Gresham Smith design competition was to design a community center for downtown Indianapolis that would honor both the memory and work of the late Julia Carson. In this partner based project I was responsible for scheduling and task management. I also needed to develop an understanding for the project area and technology that would be required.

Although complete satisfaction in a design is rare, we were proud to be chosen as finalists for the competition. Interesting technological choices in the design allowed it to be unique and unlike any other community center. The outer facade opens to expose the outside, creating a large indoor/outdoor space that can be used for varied events, such as an outdoor farmer's market. Just beyond the entrance the team developed a living wall, which created clean air for the center and an interesting architectural feature.

The objective of the Net-Zero Infill House was to design a net-zero house for placement in a vacant Muncie, Indiana lot. The project takes an in-depth look at the importance of designing a building with a tight envelope. The wall was designed with an R-Value over 20. The project helped develop my knowledge of sustainable design practices, specifically SIPS.

The Perforated Manipulation project takes place on the Virgin Island of St. Croix. The design calls for campus centered around a sustainable laboratory. The perfora-tions create a gradient in order to maximize the stack ventilation effect along with manipulating daylight. Since the lab spaces will need a controlled setting, the perfora-tions allow this to be possible
