Brad Kahlhamer: Bowery Nation

Brad Kahlhamer’s Bowery Nation installation brings together 100 katsina-like dolls and 22 birds made from a variety of materials. It speaks to the artist’s Native American roots and his time spent with the cre-ative community on New York City’s Lower East Side.

The table-like construction of Bowery Nation resembles the form of powwow parade floats that carry dancers adorned in colorful feath-ered and beaded regalia. The structure was made from the artist’s studio materials: an old painting table, saw horses, sheets of plywood, a step lad-der and wooden benches.

A consistent theme in Kahlhamer’s work is identity. He was born in Tucson of American Indian parentage, adopted into a family of German-American heritage and later raised in Wisconsin. Bowery Nation represents what he calls his “third place”, the fusion of his personal identities and mytholo-gies.

The Nelson-Atkins is located at 45th and Oak Streets, Kansas City, MO. Hours are Wednesday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Thursday/Friday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday, Noon–5 p.m. Admis-sion to the museum is free to everyone. 1 Sturdy boxes - and, lots of them. Wardrobe boxes and other specialty boxes can be purchased at local moving or shipping companies. Quality boxes can also be retrieved from wholesale companies or grocery stores, at no charge, after a shipment.

2 Packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts. Other kinds of packing for your boxes can include wadded-up newspaper, old pillows and blankets.

3 A pair of scissors, a note pad (for an inventory list or reminders) and a dark, water-resistant marker (for labeling) are indispensable during a move.

BOXING KNOW HOW:

1 Weight Limit - Each box should weigh no more than 50 pounds. Stereo equipment and electronics should be placed in their original packaging, if possible.

2 Similar items stay together. Keep bookends with books, light bulbs with lamps, and extension cords with appli-ances. Small, loose parts can be put in an envelope and attached/taped to the item with which they belong. Keep larger items (such as a cable television cord) in clear bags,

3 Write it down. Labeling each carton will save you from unnecessarily moving boxes over and over in your new home. Assign a number to every room of your new home and label boxes with the number of the room in which they belong. Tape a number to the door of each room in your new home, so, when unload-ing, you can deposit boxes in the correct location.
