Read chapter 3 ‘The Ship’s Log’

1. The ship’s log is like a diary, but it is not written every day, it is written when the sailor has time. Think about the

responsibilities and experiences Michael now has.

2. Keep a list of places that they visit and look them up on the map. Some of you may be able to see his journey on the map

in the book.

3. Research the ‘Beaufort Scale’ - What does a force 9 or 10 gale look like at sea?

After reading:

Use an atlas to find the places in the table and label them on this map of the world:

DAY 2

Remember that Michael is looking back as a grown man on his experiences.

The ship’s log is written in italics in the book to show you it is not the ‘normal’

narrative.

1. Why did the author write about Stella Artois going overboard?

2. How did you feel when the ship’s log ended and the retelling of the

story started again?

3. List all the safety procedures that Michael failed to do before the end

of this chapter. Use good vocabulary and complete sentences for each

point.

DAY 3

• Read chapter 4 - Gibbons and Ghosts

• Using the headings on the sheet to the right,

make notes on all the experiences Michael’s

senses have when he arrives on the island.

• Create another heading for his emotions.

• Use a dictionary to find at least 5 words that

you do not know and write down the definitions.

(You may need these words later!) E.g.

DAY 4

Design an image of the man who is on the

island. You can use the sheet on

the right as an idea. Think about clues

Michael has given the reader. Think about

what we know the man has done. Think

about the harsh conditions on the island.

DAY 5

A man who looks like an orangutan puts out the fire

Michael and Stella are in the sea in a storm Summarise the chapter. Try

to pick out the key points

in the missing 6 steps.
