The Talk with Your Teachers sessions on Monday and Wednesday saw wonderful turnouts at Year 4 – 8 where the appointment system worked well but there were reduced numbers at Year 9 – 13. In Years 4 – 8, we had an 87% attendance with a drop to 42% for Year 9 - 13. Overall 59% of students came for a conference with parents which is an increase on the 48% last time but it is still a little frustrating that we had Year 9 -13 teachers ready, willing and able to meet with students and parents twice in the week despite homes being rung by form teachers and reminders in newsletters and a letter home the week before.

This week at assembly we were honoured to have our local Mayor, Winton Dalley attend and speak on leadership. In what is Leadership Week, Winton presented Matthew Maxwell with a Sir Peter Blake Trust ‘Young Leader Award’ before he, the Head Students and myself spoke on Compass FM about the great things happening at Amuri Area School. Our Head Students also made presentations to Carla Taylor, Jakob and Mrs Robinson at assembly.

On Wednesday the Art Room was abuzz with excitement as our Year 10 and Room 6 students worked together on self portraits. The Room 6 students have been involved in printmaking with Mrs Baldwin and yesterday the opportunity arose for some co-operative learning and how delighted were both groups as they paired up and drew each other before self and peer assessing their work. Primary School NewsWe are at the end of a very busy term. We have been visited by Harold in the Life Education trailer, held a successful book fair with Scholastic, introduced our School Milk programme with Fonterra and on top of all that managed some quality teaching and learning! There are a large number of items in our lost property box. Some items are named and are looking for their owners. Please encourage the older students to have a hunt through the box and if you happen to be at school, perhaps check there is nothing in there that belongs at your place. Our primary assemblies are held each fortnight on a Friday afternoon. Each class is taking a turn to host an assembly and we would love to see more parents along to see some of the learning that happens in our classrooms. The next assembly will be held in Week 1 of Term 3.Thank you for your continued support. Have safe and happy holidays and we look forward to seeing you back fresh to start Term 3!

Kylee Habgood and the Primary Team

Our rugby team had to default to Lincoln on Wednesday as we didn’t have enough players to make a team and this has probably meant a place in the final is unlikely. There is one round robin match to be played next term against Rangiora High before the games to determine final rankings. Thanks to Lee Earl for taking the boys down.

As you will be aware, yesterday was whanau colours day and each whanau presented their song in the annual competition for whanau points. Won by Mitchell, the day also celebrated the 5th birthday of the Hurunui Youth Project and it’s great to see this programme continuing as it does give our youth positive activities and further opportunities for leadership.

The Lewe Paul inter form soccer trophy final was contested on Tuesday between RCH and CMC and CMC came out the winners, 1- 0 in a very close and vigorous match. Lewe Paul was the first German student we ever had on the ICYE scheme and Jakob Martin, our departing student, presented the trophy to Amy McIlraith, Form Leader for CMC at assembly.

Congratulations to these students who have been selected for North Canterbury rugby teams and best wishes to those playing Ellesmere this weekend: Under 48kg Lewys Francis, Jed Le Pine, Kyle McKenzie Under 65kg Finn Cunningham, Hamish Gray

During the holidays we have some very active students and thanks to the willingness of staff and parents who are accompanying the various groups. The names of those away are listed below to give you a real indication of the commitment this school makes to sport which can only be fulfilled by having supportive staff and parents. I did note in front of the Mayor that it is unlikely there is any other Area School in NZ with 14 students representing them in the tournament next week. Best wishes to all

CMP Sponsor a School is back!

The team at CMP would like to extend an opportunity for dairy farmers to support our rural primary school fundraising initiative ‘Sponsor a School’.

Once again you simply nominate your local participating primary school on the CMP Bobby Calf ASD form, and each bobby or cow you send into the CMP plants will be recorded against that school.

A running tally will be kept throughout the season and your school will receive a 50c donation per calf and a $1.00 donation per cow from CMP. This is a company donation and no cost is incurred by participating farmers. The greater the number you send in, the higher the donation, and best of all it does not cost you anything.

With over $56,000 going back into the community in 2012, CMP sees this as a fantastic opportunity to support the young people in our region.

To find out more about this promotion please contact CMP Livestock Representative John Byrne 0274 444 691.

Dental Care over the School Holidays

The Community Dental Service will operate an emergency service over the school holidays. This service is to provide relief of pain only and will not undertake ‘routine’ treatment. The service will be available each working day from 8:30am until 12:30pm from the Hillmorton Community Clinic, Sylvan Street, Christchurch for the following times:

Monday, 15th July 2013 – Friday, 19th July 2013 (excluding weekends)

and

Monday, 22nd July 2013 - Friday, 26th July 2013 (excluding weekends)

This service will operate by appointment only and if we are unable to see your child, alternative options will be given. If your child has dental pain as a result of an accident please contact your dentist in the first instance.

You can phone and make an appointment for the emergency clinic by ringing 335 4222. Alternatively, your school dental clinic phone will have a message on how to access emergency care.

TV2KidsFestRecycled MusicKids can learn about musical instruments and use recycled materials and bits and pieces to have a go at making their own; getting inspiration from our Brilliant Brass exhibition as well as our early Maori instruments on permanent display.
