Kurin P. Haleamau:This is Kurin Pōmaika‘imaikeakua Haleamau, 2014 graduate of Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently studying Criminal Justice at College of Southern Nevada, and working at local restaurant, Island Flavors in Las Vegas, he is an accomplished musician performing on the bass and guitar with the Hawaiian band Kawili. Mother Sheldeen Kaleimomi is kumu hula of Hālau Hula Kaleimomi and dad, Gary Haleamau, is the leader of the band Kawili.

Kanoe Kahaku: This is Kanoe Kahaku, 2014 honors graduate of Pioneer High School, San Jose, California. In her senior year she developed her customized beauty product business “Hawaiian Mist by Kanoe.” Kanoe is a member of Hālau Hula Nā Wai Ola of San Jose, California.

In past months we have lost good friends of this newsletter, the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band, the San Francisco Bay area community at large, and members of our extended ʻohana. We mention their names here and thank their memory for touching our lives. Some, we will write about at greater length in upcoming issues. *** Word has come from Beverly and Edgar Palenapa of the McKinley High School, Class of 1955 Alumni that my classmate, Janice Goo has passed away in Honolulu. *** The great jazz pianist, Reuben Yap passed away 12 February 2014, in a care home in Kapolei. I remember seeing the Reuben Yap Trio back the “Velvet Fog”, singer Mel Torme and s young Gene Roland in the mid 1950ʻs at The Clouds, across Kapahulu Street from the Honolulu Zoo. Reuben was also black belt Judoka. *** Another black belt judoka, Larry Kaneshiro, has passed away in San Jose, CA. He was Sensei for the San Jose Buddhist Church Judo Club. His wife Sandie, is a former Kapalakiko ʻukulele student. *** Daniel Puou Haleamau, III, one of the old timers of Hawaiian music in Northern California passed away 1 August 2014, in Sacramento.

• Elaine Nickie Ahuna Hines: (28 August 1927 - 6 March 2014). Auntie Nickie was born an Ahuna in Hilo and was hānaied at an early age where she learned to speak Chinese fluently. Like a true local, she loved to tell stories about the small kid time old days growing up and her extended ‘ohana. In a video interview with the Kamehameha Schools, Auntie Nickie tells about how she wanted so much to become a musician. One of the first songs she learned was ”Opelu” written by Eugene Kaupiko of Miloli‘i. Auntie Nickie was ‘ohana to Sarah Kapela Kaupiko, Eugeneʻs wife and she tells about her cleaning fish duties outside the Kaupiko home. Dennis Kamakahi pays tribute to Sarah in his mele, “Kapela.” Auntie Nickie talked passionately about her musical mentors and associates and told wonderful stories about each and every one; Uncle Fred Konanui Punahoa; Albert Nahale‘ā; Eva Kahauolopua; Haleloke Kahauolopua; George Hussey; Harold Chang; Benny Villaverde; Genoa Keawe, Sonny Kamahele; Gary Aiko; Irwin Carvalho; George Naope; Myrtle K. Hilo; Linda Dela Cruz; Alice Nāmakelua; Kai Davis; Mel Peterson; Jerry Kalima; Momi Bee Kahawaiola‘a; Eddie Pang; Alan Akaka; Kaipo Asing; Mel Murata. She was definitely one of the guiding lights of the cultural work of the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band. Actually my association with the Ahuna family started by watching Ku‘ulei Ahuna (who with Bernard Kalua, Richard Kaleohano, Clayton Kua and Abe Keala, made up the Hilo band, The Blalahs) perform at Rosieʻs Boathouse in Hilo. Ka‘apana and his group I Kona I met Nickieʻs brother, Bill “Cowboy” Ahuna who became a staunch supporter of the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band and our newsletter. Sometime in the early 1980ʻs I got a call from Auntie Genoa Keawe, who had several hours to wile, while waiting for a connecting flight back to Honolulu. She and two musician friends were at San Francisco International Airport, had not eaten and were hungry for some ono pāke food. Auntieʻs musical cohorts were Wehilani Ching (Bernard Kaluaʻs mama-in-law), and Nickie Hines. We all piled into the KHBʻs Blue Goose had a nice dinner at Emmyʻs on Monterey Boulevard, and whisked back to the airport in time for their flight back to Honolulu. Auntie Nickie never forgot that first meeting in San Francisco. Several years later, Nickie and her husband, Joe turned up at Iosepa, Skull Valley, Utah,where the KHB conducts our annual pilgrimage every Memorial Day weekend. She was family to Roy Hussey who was a member of the Iosepa Historical Association. It was there I found out that Joe and Nickie were ex bikers on Harley Hogs, just as I was with my banzai choppers. Joe and Nickie had been part of the Hawaiian music scene in the San Francisco Bay Area having lived there several years earlier performing with Kika Dupont, Kai Davis, Phillip Kaona and Liko Martin. When Evelyn and I heard that they were planning a side trip to San Francisco on the way home from Utah, we told the Hines, “no come to San Francisco if you not going to stay with us at Halemele, our home.” Nickie and Joe did come, stayed as our guests and retaliated in kind, “no come back to Hawai‘i if you not going stay with us in Waimānalo.” Thatʻs the reason why we always partook of the Hinesʻ hospitality and aloha. We still have the key to their front door. The song “Olomana Moon” was composed on their front porch in honor of the Hines 55th wedding anniversary, 7 March 2010. Joe and Nickie Hines talked lovingly about my uncle, Sam Kawahara, who lived in Pāpa‘ikou as they all used to hunt together. My Uncle Sam, a paniolo in his earlier years, was a wonderful kī hō‘alu performer. He eventually became the warden at Kūlani Prison and then the warden at OP (O‘ahu Prison). Joe and Nickie also introduced us to her “sister” Auntie Annabelle Kam, an herbal healer who lives in Kalihiwai on the island of Kaua‘i (where my biological mama, Grace Tanigawa was born). Musicians Kainani Kahaunaele and Kellen Paik come from that area, too. We had so much good fun with the aunties when we all got together that we gave Auntie Annabelle the name Auntie Anykine Anykine. There is a side of of Auntie Nickie that most people were unaware. She worked in Hawaiʻiʻs government circles and was a friend to my old pal from Hilo, Lloyd Nekoba. Lloyd and I worked together in my early J-Town - San Francisco State days. We played soft ball with Jim Hirabayashi on Lloydʻs Taisho team. When the dust settled after the tumultuous student uprising on the State campus, Lloyd and I, with other community activists help set up the Japanese American curriculum in the emerging School of Ethnic Studies. We became the first instructors of the school. Jim Hirabayashi, an anthropologist by trade became the schoolʻs first Dean. Auntie Nckie was a kupuna in the Waimānalo community. She was very active in getting food to the homeless and needy. Mai poina e Auntie Nickie. Mahalo ā nui loa for touching our hearts.

• William “Willy” Takayuki Kaneda: (25 June 1926 - 18 January 2014). From 1955-1958 I was a student at the University of Hawaii, Mānoa and paled around with a group of musicians that was known for playing outrageous pranks on each other. This group of warubozo pranksters included, among others, trumpeters Donald Harada, Norman




Baltazar, and Willy Kaneda; trombonists Kats Oto and Eppy Uekawa; saxophonist George “Dr. T” Takushi. All of us were associated with Henry Konshiʻs big band the Modernaires and some of us took music classes from Barbara Smith, Richard Vine and Norman Rian, all, professors of the UHM Music Department which was head quartered in an old, one story, wooden building across Dole Street from Hale Laulima. Other students of the music department in those days included Danny Kaleikini, Ronnie Bright, and Penny Silva. I left Hawaii for good in August 1958 for the bright lights of the Big Apple; New York City, aspiring to be an artist, architect and percussionist, not necessarily in that order and soon lost touch with the musicians that I cut my teeth with in music. Donald Harada, my best friend from Kāne‘ohe was my sole link to Hawa‘i, and many tumultuous years had passed before I would return to the place of my birth and to reconnect with my paternal and maternal families and some of my old musical cohorts. In the late 1960ʻs, my musical career took a different path as I became deeply involved with Hawaiian music heavily influenced by the Hawaiian Renaissance Movement. Shortly after I left Hawai‘i in 1958, Willy Kaneda graduated from UH Mānoa with a teaching credential and began his music teaching career, working at various schools of the Hawai‘i Department of Education and this is where our paths crossed one final time. My dearest friend and mentor, the late Hawaiian composer and musician, Dennis Kamakahi, once revealed to me that he, like myself, started his musical career as a trombonist. At Āliamanu School, a young Dennis Kamakahi learned the rudiments of trombone playing from his band teacher, Willy Kaneda. In researching Willyʻs passing I found out that in 1977, he was the organizer of the Kaimukī High School advanced Polynesian musical group ‘Ohana O Mele. Many Hawaiian musicians were alumni to this group; among them, Kelly Boy Delima, Tivaini and Tenimonni Tatofi of Kapena, Ernie Cruz, Jr; and John Feary.

• Mae Setsuko Inaba Kawahara: (17 December 1927 - 20 December 2013); Aaron Ahn: (19 September 1932 - 20 March 2014). One of my favorite aunties, Mae was married to my uncle, Karl Komao Kawahara (KKK), a celebrated former teacher at Hilo High School and known affectionately by his students as the “Java Man.” Uncle Karl was my dadʻs youngest brother. That made him a Nisei and me, a Sansei as we were one year apart in age but of a different generation. Early, in my involvement in Hawaiian music, Uncle Karl lent me the use of his collection of LPʻs and accompanied me to the musical haunts and dives in the Hilo area: the Green Onion, the

Uncle Karl was a good friend of Auntie Dotty Thompson so we always could get tickets to the Merrie Monarch Hula Competition. His marriage to Mae united two contending Big Island political rival families. Auntie Mae was an avid bowler and always had an open invitation for me to stay at their home on Melani Street. *** I never really got to know my uncle Aaron because I had moved to the mainland. I did know that he was a teacher for Hawai‘iʻs Department of Education. At a recent Kawahara family reunion, his wife, my Auntie Tomie reminded me that I was the chief instigator and ring leader of a group of cousins that tied strings of empty Heinz Pork & Beans and Dole Pineapple cans on the back of their car at their wedding. Those are what we call warubozo days.

• Dirk P. Vogel: Wally Pfiffer and Chris Kennison informs me that steelie and Hawaiian music collector and historian, Dirk Vogel passed away 29 August 2014. at age 80, in New Hope, Minnesota.

• Daniel Puou Haleamau, III: One of the old timers of Hawaiian music in Northern California, Dan Haleamau, passed away, 1 August 2014 in Sacramento, California. Danʻs band Danʻs Hawaiianas were the musicians for Loea Naomi Leinā‘ala Kalamaʻs hālau hula Ka Pā Hula Kanoelehuaokahalema‘uma‘u ‘O Kalama. His son Darcy, ʻukulele player in Danʻs band, once was a musical associate of the late Dennis Pavao. Dan was a 1955 graduate of the Kamehameha Schools. In attendance at his memorial was a former musical associate, Duchy Guerrero, a member of that same graduating class. Also in attendance was Danʻs cousin, Gary Haleamau who flew in from Las Vegas with his wife Sheldeen.

• Roy & Kathy Sakuma honored: ‘Ukulele teachers Roy and Kathy Sakuma will be honored as Distinguished Peacemakers 2014 at a presentation ceremony, 11AM-12noon, Sunday, 21 September 2014 at the Urban Garden Center, 955 Kamehameha Highway, Pearl City, O‘ahu.

• Hālau Hula KaUa Tauhine: Kumu Māhealani Uchiyama has released a manual for the student of Hawaiian dance, entitled, “The New Haumāna Hula Handbook,” This rendition discusses the origins of the dance, hula as a spiritual practice, genres of hula, the regalia of the dance, Hawaiian language and chant, hālau etiquette and practices, format of a




traditional hula presentation, a glossary of hula commands and footwork, plus cultural, geographic and historical background of the islands. It includes a DVD illustrating the basic footwork of hula pā Ipu. It retails at $35.
