My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

RESPECT LIFE! This month of October is dedicated to Our Mother Mary, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, and she is our “Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.” Life is precious at all stages, from conception to natural death. It is unfair and untrue to say that those who care for the unborn child do not care for that child after it is born. The whole purpose of our Project Gabriel angels, our parishioners and volunteers, is to help and walk with pregnant women not only through their pregnancy but also for one year after the birth of the child, or more as needed. One of our Project Gabriel angels is our parishioner MaryEllen Peterek, who when asked to reflect on a Pro-Life cause, decided to share her informed thoughts and her experience regarding Capital Punishment. Let us respect life at all stages and remember, we live in times of mercy, God’s Mercy extended and meant for all! Let us extend that mercy as God calls us to. So here below follows this beautiful reflection on the gift of life, even the life of someone who’s committed crimes against others. Our Mother Mary’s message of life seems more relevant than ever! Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!!!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

——————————————————————————

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING AND THE DEATH PENALTY (reflections by parishioner MaryEllyn Peterek) In The Catechism of the Catholic Church, it states that the death penalty is permissible in certain cases if the “guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined.”

The Church also teaches “that if there are other means available to defend people from the ‘unjust aggressor,’ these means are preferred to the death penalty because they are considered to be more respectful of the dignity of the person and in keeping with the common good.”

Because today’s society makes possible effective means for preventing crime without execution, the Catechism (quoting Pope St. John Paul II) states that “the cases in which execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare if not practically nonexistent.” (2267,88)

In January 1999, Pope John Paul II, without changing Catholic teaching, appealed for a consensus to end the death penalty on the ground that it was “both cruel and unnecessary.” He said that the criminal offender should be offered “an incentive and help to change his or her behavior and be rehabilitated.” Pope Francis advocated that “capital sentences be commuted to a lesser punishment that allows for time and incentives for the reform of the offender.”

The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops states that “Our fundamental respect for every human life and for God, who created each person in his image, requires that we choose not to end a human life in response to violent crimes if non-lethal options are available.”

As Catholics, we believe in a consistent ethic of life from conception to natural death. “Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly consistent. It cannot tolerate bias and an indivisible good. We need to show care for all life and for the life of everyone” (Evangelium vitae, 87). The death penalty violates this consistent ethic.

According to a 2014 study, at least 4% of those sentenced to death in the United States are innocent. For every 9 people who have been executed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, 1 person has been exonerated after being proven innocent. The Catechism of the Catholic Church makes it clear: “The deliberate murder of an innocent person is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human being, to the golden rule, and the holiness of the Creator” (2261).

Besides executing innocent people along with the guilty, the death penalty also does not often bring healing to victims’ families. For many victims’ families the loss of another life is not the answer. “Pursuing the death penalty would not be the way we would want to honor our daughter’s life, nor would that decision have helped us deal with the painful reminders of her unfulfilled hopes and dreams” (Vicki Schleber, Catholic Mobilizing Network speaker).

Over 85% of the nation’s top criminologists believe the death penalty is not a deterrent. Many states where the death penalty has been abolished, the murder rate has fallen significantly. Many law enforcement officials argue that the death penalty does not serve as a deterrence and only re-directs vital resources away from addressing the real cause of crime.

In short, the 5th Commandment is “thou shall not kill.” It gives no further explanation than that. That seems to include the government as well.

On a personal note, I had an argument with a co-worker one day, a fellow-Catholic, whose reason for not believing in abortion but at the same time believing in the death penalty, was because “the unborn were innocent and criminals were not.” My reply was that I believed, “Life is not a reward for good behavior, it is a free gift from God!”

September 2017 Dear Father, As you probably know, the Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by a parish priest who had the vision and foresight to conceive of an organization which would provide Catholic men the opportunity to live their faith through charitable works, caring for their families, and defending the Catholic Faith. Today, the Knights of Columbus are 1.9 million members strong in 17 countries, providing a strong moral example in an age where culture so often promotes self-interest over service to others. Most recently, they have been at the forefront of the Church’s efforts to support victims of religious persecution around the world. Last year, the Knights donated more than $177 million and 75 million man-hours to charity, in addition to providing its members with the opportunity to share a fraternal bond with men of similar values. Last year, in Illinois alone, the Knights donated $733,583 and 235,757 man-hours in their charitable efforts. As a member of the Knights of Columbus for 29 years and as the Knight’s State Chaplain since 2009, I have personally witnessed the tremendous work that these men accomplish in our parishes and in our diocese. There is, of course, much more work which needs to be done in the name of charity. A member of the Knights of Columbus will be conducting a recruitment drive after all the Masses some weekend in the near future. Please continue to encourage the men of your parish, who are practicing Catholics and at least 18 years old, to prayerfully consider joining the ranks of this outstanding organization, especially if you are a Knight yourself. Thank you for your assistance with the Knights’ recruitment efforts. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General State Chaplain, Knights of Columbus

More on the Miracle of the Sun

The Miracle of the Sun was an event that occurred on October 13, 1917, attended by a large crowd who had gathered near Fátima, Portugal in response to a prophecy made by three shepherd children that the Virgin Mary, referred to as Our Lady of Fatima, would appear and perform miracles on that date. Newspapers published testimony from reporters and other people who claimed to have witnessed extraordinary solar activity, such as the sun appearing to "dance" or zig-zag in the sky, careen towards the earth, or emit multicolored light and radiant colors. According to these reports, the event lasted approximately ten minutes.

The local bishop opened a canonical investigation of the event in November of 1917, to review witness accounts and assess whether the alleged private revelation from Mary were compatible with Catholic theology. The local priest conducting the investigation was particularly convinced by the concurring testimony of extraordinary solar phenomenon from secular reporters, government officials, and other skeptics in attendance. Bishop José da Silva declared the miracle "worthy of belief" on October 13, 1930, permitting "officially the cult of Our Lady of Fatima" within the Catholic Church. At a gathering on October 13, 1951, at Fátima, the papal legate, Cardinal Tedeschini, told the million people attending that on October 30 & 31, November 1 & 8, 1950, Pope Pius XII himself witnessed the miracle of the sun from the Vatican gardens.

Estimates of the number of people present range from 30,000 and 40,000, by Avelino de Almeida writing for the Portuguese newspaper O Século, to 100,000, estimated by lawyer Dr. José Almeida Garrett, the son of a professor of natural sciences at the University of Coimbra. According to many witnesses, after a period of rain, the dark clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal, and to cast multicolored lights across the landscape, the people, and the surrounding clouds. The sun was then reported to have careened towards the earth before zig-zagging back to its normal position. Previously wet clothes became "suddenly and completely dry, as well as the wet and muddy ground that had been previously soaked because of the rain that had been falling."

Legion of Mary News

The month of October is the month of the Most Holy Rosary. What better way to honor our Blessed Mother than by praying the rosary on a daily basis. Our Legion of Mary is encouraging everyone to join the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary which has several benefits as well as Rosary Indulgences. What is this confraternity? The Rosary Confraternity of the Catholic Church is a spiritual association. The members of which strive to pray the entire Rosary during the course of each week. They form a union of countless hundreds of thousands of the faithful throughout the world who, along with their own intentions, include the intentions and needs of all other members of the Rosary Confraternity both living and dead. For more information, please pick up a flyer at the back of the church or you can visit their website at www.rosary-center.org. You can join on-line or by sending in your application, which is included in the flyer, via mail.

ALL SOULS DAY

All Souls Day is Thursday, November 2nd. At 7:00 PM a Mass will be celebrated to remember and pray for all the faithful departed. A Litany of names of those who have been buried from St. Andrew the Apostle will be sung as a candle is lit for each soul. This is always a beautiful Mass and everyone is invited to attend. At the back of church is The Book of the Dead. Write the name of your deceased loved ones in the book. This book will be placed on the altar during the All Souls Mass and all through the month of November and we will pray for them all. Beginning October 22nd, you may bring in a small picture of your deceased loved ones and place it on the table set up in church to the left of the altar.

Jesus, remember me, when you

come into Your Kingdom.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED Russell Badali, James Wawrzyniak Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 x301 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT

MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS

Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING

Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain. I would like to have my house blessed.

Please contact me to make arrangements.
