Message from State Deputy

My Brothers All,

Welcome to the new fraternal year! Congratulations to you and your Council for achieving all

that you have this past fraternal year! Didn't quite make it to your goal? Assess, plan, and hit it

harder this year. Start earlier so you don't have to play catch-up.

I wish to thank you for your continued support and vote of confidence electing me your State Deputy again this

year. Although we didn't attain all the goals we wanted to this past fraternal year......we can look back on a

good number of accomplishments and build for a stronger performance this year.

As one of the first actions for this year, I wish to formally invite you to attend the Summer Leadership Training

Meeting. Please plan to attend. We have revamped it and hope it will provide new and worthwhile training

and leadership for you. We have specifically designed seminars for each of your roles; one set for the New

Grand Knight, one set for those returning Grand Knights, one for New District Deputies, one for Financial

Secretaries - with a Supreme FS Trainer! We have tracks for learning how to develop/build that relationship

with your parish priest......to turn that relationship around so you are both supportive of each other. We have

tracks for learning what to keep and how to document those events and programs - and how to submit it for

State and/or Supreme awards. If you haven't already planned to attend please make it a priority. Let us kick

this new fraternal year off to a good start.

As was rolled out last year by our Supreme Knight, we must continue to make it a priority to Build Our

Domestic Church, our families must become a priority as we focus on our spirituality and become fully

engaged in our parishes and come together to support our Church and her programs.

Our State Membership Team has come up with some very interesting and, I hope, coveted incentives this year.

Some will be rolled out now, some will be revealed later in the year. Please keep abreast of these incentives

and don't miss out. Something for each month. Everyone will have an attainable goal.

Let's band together and make this the best year your Council and our State has had! Focus is key......let's keep

the goal in mind and visit it often......you can attain it! I'm pulling for you!

State Chaplain Message

For almost a year now, we have been looking at various aspects of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ

with the aim of identifying the traits of authentic masculinity. Our purpose is to uncover the ways that

Jesus, by his example, is teaching us how to be manly.

As you well know, Pope Francis inaugurated a special Year of Mercy last December, and the

Extraordinary Jubilee will continue until its closing on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the

Universe, this November 20.

The Holy Father wrote a special letter for the Jubilee, Misericordiae Vultus (The Face of Mercy). If you haven’t

read it yet, I strongly encourage you to do so. It’s not long, and its spiritual and practical insight is rich. You can

easily find it online.

Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. This is the main gist of the Pope’s letter. Jesus makes visible the

invisible mercy of God. In what he says and does, Jesus demonstrates to us how merciful is our Father in heaven.

One of the implications of Jesus’ unveiling of God’s mercy is that we, too, must be merciful. We could state it

even more forcefully: mercy is essential if we are to live up to our vocation as Catholic men.

Forgiveness is, of course, an important dimension of mercy. In the process of forgiveness, a person chooses to

relieve another of the debt owed him. In some cases, what is owed might be an apology; in others, some material

thing; in others, some course of action. Whatever the circumstances, an event has taken place in which a debt was

incurred. To forgive the person means to move forward as if the debt has been paid whether the debtor in fact has

done anything to make restitution or not.

A line on a Christmas card I received last year caught my attention. It read: “To forgive is to set a prisoner free

and discover that the prisoner was you.” Another quote I heard years ago went like this: “Unforgiveness is like

drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Both illustrate very clearly the fact that forgiveness is not

only good for the one being forgiven, but it does wonders also for the peace and spiritual wellbeing of the

forgiver.

Forgiveness is an indispensable expression of mercy, but it is not the only one. To have mercy also means that our

hearts are moved with pity for those who are in need, and that we do something to help. Remember the spiritual

and corporal works of mercy? Pope Francis specifically asks us during the Jubilee to reflect on them and

rediscover their place in our life. Note that forgiving offenses is only one of the fourteen works of mercy!

If a man lacks mercy, he is simply not Christlike. And if he is not Christlike, then he is not authentically

masculine. There are people who think that to show mercy is a sign of weakness, and that those who are merciful

are bound to be taken advantage of and trampled underfoot. To that objection, all I can say is this: if being

merciful makes me weak and causes me to be trampled underfoot, then I am in good company. Our Lord’s mercy

led him to the Cross, and the Cross led to the Resurrection. May mercy bring us all to eternal life!

Brothers, I urge you–especially during this Year of Mercy, but always–to be merciful like Jesus, the face of the

Father’s mercy. If you want to be a real man, there’s no other way.

Happy New Year My Brothers!

Is this the year? Washington is so overdue to have a great year that I can almost taste it. Let's grow

this year! It's the best measure of how we are doing as a State and why we pay so much attention to it.

Programs and Involvement are the things that drive our growth so I beg you let's have a great year

and a growing year by getting busy and getting involved. The Summer Leadership Training Meeting is coming

July 15-17, 2016 right in my back yard - Pasco - and you and your Council's representatives ought to be there!!!

Thanks to a huge leadership effort by your State Warden Greg Maloney, the entire meeting will be formatted

differently and revitalized. I cannot think of a better way to start off the new fraternal year, so plan on coming! I

don't know how I lucked out again this year but I have the best talk of all to give and I get to give it to everyone,

small group by small group... I am really pumped about doing it, so come and be a part of the meeting.

There are three Councils that have not paid their Per Capita yet. That is sad! If your Council has not paid and has

an issue with the bill, your next step is to contact the State Deputy. That thing was due in February. Please take

the next step so we can close that out for the year

It's insurance time again, and I sent all of the Councils a bill for it along with a Insurance Certificate Request form

that you can use if you have a function that requires one. We had a slight increase this year- 10 cents a man. Still

a good price though. I also sent you my "Six-Months Letter" for the first six months of the new fraternal year.

Unbelievably boring but very informative. It's an acquired taste...like the taste for whiskey.

Keep sending me your money and let's have an AWESOME YEAR!!!

My Brothers,

It's July and the Summer Leadership meeting in Pasco is nearly upon us. At this year's meeting we

will again trying a bit of a different format. I will be demonstrating how to file Supreme forms online

and adding a comments regarding some of the forms and the results of not filing them on time.

For those that so diligently paid their bills on time... we thank you and here's a small reminder regarding the

writing of checks.

A few forgot. You all know that when writing a check the verbiage and the numerical amount must match

exactly...right? Ok… a few forgot that too and when I returned their checks to them to be re-written correctly so I

could deposit them…guess who they sent them back to? Right…ME…WRONG…Remember…NEVER send

money to the Treasurer!

Below are the SUPREME reports as of July 2nd, 2016. Please note if you see your Council number and believe

you have already submitted your reports mentioned below then wait a few days and check back with SUPREME

as they update about once a week

State Advocate Message

Brothers,

Please peruse the active/inactive Home Corporations within Washington State that contain the Knights of

Columbus name. Chehalis should be reconciled, however, they should check because it should have been

removed by now.

Last year at this time we had 24 so we are making progress. Some, it is nothing more that changing the name of

your Home Corporation. Others do not use their Home Corporation and it contains no assets. Why keep it???

What I hear from the Councils that do not have any assets with the Home Corporation, “We might want to use it

again in the future.” Some have been debunked for decades. Does your Home Corporation file tax returns? Why

keep it around?

If your Home Corporation is active, it’s a simple task to put agreements in place and change the name to anything

that does not contain the words “Knights of Columbus” or “KofC.” Most anything else is acceptable.

I learned at the training seminar in Dallas, if your Home Corporation building has an emblem, name, or stained

glass window that is a part of the building, that’s acceptable. Before, it wasn’t. That doesn’t mean a sign that is

attached to the building, but a part of. Painting the emblem or name on the building does not make it a part of the

building.

Bothell is a perfect example of this rule. As I understand it, a member long ago bequeathed funds to place a stain

glass window in the wall between the Hall and outside. If you’ve never seen it, it’s beautiful. This display is

acceptable (I personally think it’s more than acceptable).

Supreme isn’t going to ransack your funds or take ownership of your Home Corporation. Quite the contrary, they

don’t want anything to do with it. That’s why they want these agreements in place, or at least change the name, so

they are not liable. You should, too…

The following list is public knowledge on the WA Secretary of State website. Please take care of this pronto. Of

course if you need help, we can work together. I’m still learning too.

receive. Hoping we do not have any in the revoked status. Please review last month’s Bulletin regarding new EIN

hurdles the IRS has been kind enough to place in front of us. They keep things interesting.

State Warden Message

Brother Knights,

Happy New FRATERNAL YEAR! Congratulations to all newly elected and re-elected Council officers and

appointed district deputies, directors and chairmen. An opportunity to serve our Council, our community and our

parish has been afforded to us in a unique way. It is a privilege to serve, and a responsibility to serve well. As

we embark on a new year, let us never lose sight of the duties entrusted to us. As described in the June 2016

issue of Columbia, our connection to knighthood of the middle ages and to the spirit of knightly service as

modern-day knights is made manifest in our service to the King of kings, his Church and the community at large

through our works of mercy. We inherit a legacy from Fr. McGivney rooted in sacrificial service to God and

man. With that, we must be men of action.

Let us live up to the legacy of knighthood and be the game-changers who confront the challenges of our modern

day. Within the next few weeks, we begin by coming together at the Summer Leadership Meeting in Pasco, July

15-17, 2016, to prepare ourselves to serve well. As Christ told his apostles, “Freely you have received; now

freely give” (Mt 10:8).

At this year’s summer meeting, we are blessed to have talented guest speakers, and an opportunity to participate

in leader seminars and small group workshops led by motivated knights from throughout the state. The Saturday

dinner will include a special presentation from Bishop Robert Barron’s acclaimed series on Catholicism. The

beauty and truth of the Catholic Faith is explored and illustrated in this series, and you will truly enjoy a selection

from this series. An updated Summer Meeting Agenda is included in this bulletin and is posted on the WSC

Website. Come and be inspired.

you will find two Councils advancing their message in the June editions of Columbia magazine and Knightline.

General Programs

Brother Knights,

A new Service Program year is upon us. It brings excitement and a new beginning. A new beginning in the sense

of viewing our service program categories through the lens of the Supreme Council’s new initiative, Building the

Domestic Church While Strengthening our Parish (BDC). Not only will our Program Action Plans be

intricately linked to this initiative, but our Membership Action Plans must also tie into this initiative. Thus, added

focus must be directed to ensure we implement plans that link service programs and membership growth by first

assessing the priorities and needs of our parish communities. That implies Council leaders meeting with their

pastors now to explain this initiative and relate how our programs can help the pastor achieve his goals. The

ultimate objective is to strengthen families through an integrated parish experience of the Knights of Columbus.

We will focus on this initiative at the Summer Leader meeting. I encourage you to become well acquainted with

this initiative by going to the following link for all things Domestic Church: www.kofc.org/DomesticChurch.

We will continue to emphasize Strong Visible Programs, but we will approach it from the perspective of

strengthening the family in concert with the programs and priorities of our parishes. This does not mean we

change everything. Councils are encouraged to continue many of their great programs and community

engagement activities. The difference now is that we are charged to ensure we have a strategy for bringing about

the mission and vision for the greater alliance between the Church and the family. In other words, work together

for the common purpose of strengthening our families.

As a result of the BDC initiative, the Washington State Council Monthly Service Report (MSR) will be revised.

Councils will have access to the new MSR on or before July 31. The first Council MSR is due by August 10,

covering activities in July, to qualify for timely-submission points. After August 10, no points will be awarded

for timely submission, but Councils will still receive points for activities conducted.

Submit your Council’s Service Program Personnel Report (Form #365), to Supreme by August 1. All Chairmen

and Director Positions should be filled. The Council will not receive programming information unless you

submit this form.

General Programs continued

Here are some programs to keep your finger on in the first few months of the Fraternal Year:

Soccer Challenge and Citizenship Essay Contest materials should be ordered in July.

Plan and order materials now for the Order-Wide Church Drive in October.

Plan and host a 5th Sunday Rosary Program this month.

Plan a Family activity for the Knights of Columbus Family Week Celebration in August.

** Remember, plan programs and membership activities through the lens of Building the Domestic

Church! Refer to the link I provided above for more information on BDC.

With these or similar strong and visible activities during the first two months, assess and plan ahead, promote

them in advance, invite parishioners to participate always and encourage men to join the Order during the

activities. Then, schedule an Admissions Degree (1st Degree) in August.

Special Alert: Prepare now for the Coats for Kids – Black Friday Distribution. We received hundreds of free

coats last year. I will ask Councils to submit their proposals in the coming weeks, so get started now by assessing

the need in your communities. I will forward you the format to use for your proposal.

July Council Spotlight: Council 7907, Issaquah, and Council 16176, Elma-Montesano, practice good

publicity and Evangelization by advertising their good works of mercy in the June issues of Columbia

magazine and Knightline respectively.

each month depending on intake. If we attain our Jurisdiction goal of 930 new members, I will

shave his beard in front of everyone at our 2017 Summer Meeting. I really want to do this since I

am terrible a shaving. I’m dangerous with a blade.

Beat the Summer Meeting and get a head start. I have long waited to implement the Star Track Recruiter

Program. It will be fun.

The program will kick off at the Summer Leadership Meeting in Pasco, but you can start the program now.

Brochures will be in your membership packets and available for extras.

All you need is new member recruitment with the proposer information filled out. Each time a proposer brings in

a new member, reactivation or transfer from out of State, the proposer will receive a Star Track Recruiter pin (no

limit to the pins).

You must complete the informational application contained in the new brochure. Three fold the brochure with the

mailing address exposed for the post office and mail to Marcel Bergeron (Constellation Libra; meaning balance or

scale), Membership Incentive/Tracker Chairman and a pin will be shipped to you. Can you imagine a brother

Knight with 12 pins on his lapel or vest???




Please do not pass these pins to anyone else. Take pride that you are helping to build our Order.

Once a month, Supreme provides a new member list with the proposer. It rarely has the correct number of new

member proposers. Supreme’s list will be correct, just not complete. After a year of being Membership Director,

I still do not know why there is such a discrepancy.

With this new program, we are fixing the problem, but remember to fill out the proposer line on the Form 100

and turn in your entry form. If you don't, no one will know.

Please keep in mind, if Supreme does not show the correct new member/proposer and you do not send in the

2017. Many drawings will be held at the Summer Meeting. The more applications, the more gifts. Please fill out

the cards.

This program started July 1st 2016, so no new members from the previous fraternal year will qualify (sorry).

There are many other incentives so check out the brochure.

Remember, 930 is the intake quota to shave State Deputy Eddie’s beard. 33 years is a long time. Can you

imagine him without a beard??? Each month, we will visually shave a part of his beard in the Bulletin, if we can

figure out the graphics for the percentage gain.

I am excited about this year's membership recruitment program. Many councils have been able to clean up their

books. Now comes the time to rebuild and rejoin in our efforts for growth and programs. I really want to shave

Eddie's beard, please make it happen.

Pennies For Heaven

The Council Pennies For Heaven assessment comes out during the month of January. As I am sure you know,

Pennies For Heaven Fund is a program started years ago to help fund our Seminarian Support. The program was

designed around "A Penny A Day, A Prayer A Day for vocations." Each Council is encouraged to donate at least

$3.65 per member to this fund to help support our Seminarians. Many Councils add this to their annual dues,

some only suggest a donation. Keep in mind that this is a “donation” and not a bill. But this program’s success

depends on your donations.

In addition to this annual assessment, Councils are encouraged to have a “Pennies For Heaven” barrel that they

pass around during or after every Council meeting. Some assess penalties for people who use incorrect terms,

gestures or attire (hats on/off – forgot name badge, etc.). These funds should be kept and accounted for separately

from the Councils Funds. Then each year the Council Grand Knight and the Council Delegates take their pennies

to the State Convention..

Pennies for Heaven goes directly to the three dioceses in Washington State to help defray the cost of education for

our seminarians. This is different that the RSVP support that goes directly to the seminarian to help in his

personal expenses. Last year the Knights of Columbus were able to give $25,000 to each of the three diocese, and

an additional $25,000 to Bishop White Seminary to reduce the mortgage.

At the upcoming Summer Leadership Meeting I will be raffling off religious items to help raise money for the

Pennies For Heaven Fund. Remember “every penny counts.”

This program is not complete without the “Prayer A Day.” I have my favorite prayer for vocations on my

nightstand and that reminds me to include it when I say my evening prayers. Find your favorite prayer. Give

yourself a reminder then make it a routine. Then Pray!

programs and activities that are available for your Councils. The Soccer Challenge, Free Throw, Substance Abuse

Poster contest and Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest are just the tip of the iceberg of programs and

activities that are available.

Need something a little more exciting or original? Think outside the box. How about sponsoring a play, a

Halloween party or a living Christmas Nativity. There are countless activities that a Council can do and help

sponsor. Hopefully your activity will make it into the top 5 for consideration to be the top youth program of the

state come convention time.

Featured at the summer leadership meeting will be extended information on the Coats for Kids Program, this is

Military Chaplains Scholarship Fund

Worthy Faithful Navigators and Grand Knights:

I am pleased to report that, thanks to your efforts, the total for our Military Chaplains Scholarship Fund has

reached its $1.2 million goal!

The Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, the Supreme Master, Dennis Stoddard, and I cannot thank you enough for

all that you have done to promote this program.

On June 3, 2016, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson mailed a letter with the final payment of $200,000 to his

Excellency Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio for the Chaplains Fund stating: "This amount brings the Order's

support for this program up to $1.2 million dollars which has been possible thanks to the enthusiastic support of

Fourth Degree Knights across the country.... The Knights of Columbus has been pleased to stand in solidarity

with Your Excellency in favor of this creative and important initiative which combines support for seminarians

and for the military, two proud hallmarks of the Knights of Columbus.”

In his letter to Archbishop Broglio the Supreme Knight extended the Order’s commitment to $1.4 million dollars

for the 2016-2017 fraternal year.

Thus, we have a new goal to raise $200,000 by June 30, 2017.

Checks are still arriving at Supreme, so we are well on our way to meeting the new goal. I know we can meet this

goal if we continue to solicit the support of our brother knights and fellow parishioners to meet the critical need to

provide priests for our valiant service men and women.

General Agent Update

The Pitfalls of Replacing Coverage

You know the old saying, “the grass seems greener on the other side of the fence,” but we all know that it rarely is

true. The same holds true when it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with

coverage offered by another company. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the “greener” grass on the other side

of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet — in some cases, a lot

less. That’s why it pays to remember another old adage, “Read the fine print.”

There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force, whether that coverage is with the Knights of

Columbus or with another company. Let's focus on the potential pitfalls of replacing coverage here — pitfalls that

an agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener might neglect to mention.

First, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made

for a period — typically two years —after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your

current coverage.

Second, it’s unlikely that you can obtain the same amount of coverage, for the same premium, that you were able

to obtain with your existing contract. The two factors that determine how much you’ll need to pay for life

insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you’re older now than you were when you took out your current

coverage. There’s no way around that. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is

your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors can affect the amount

of coverage you’ll get for your premium dollar.

If someone encourages you to replace — or worse, drop — your existing coverage, please call your agent. He'll

show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest.

I traveled to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Vancouver Washington on Sunday, June 12 to support

Columbia Council 1327 and their Sunday Parish Breakfast It was a fundraiser for our Ultrasound program. I

brought the new Sculpture of Life to the event and shared with the parishioners. I would like to thank Bill

Thompson G.K. and his crew for their hospitality and helping with the set-up. The breakfast was fantastic and the

sculpture was enjoyed by many.

manual may be found on this website), secure your locations NOW, and Get READY TO GO!! Don't wait until

the last minute or they will be gone. Break out your check list and get everything in order....Banners, Cans, Signs

and most importantly TOOTSIE ROLLS!!

For those Councils new at this, give it a try. You will not be disappointed even if your success is limited. The

biggest reward will be yours in seeing the benefits. When you see what your work does, you will be

overwhelmed. The money collected over the last few years has helped countless individuals with disabilities, to

help them have a better life. The next time you see a Special Olympian, care for the elderly or aid to anyone with

disabilities, you can take comfort that you helped that person through the Tootsie Roll Program.

Here’s a tip; QFC and Fred Meyer are more than willing to work with you. Go to the Customer Service desk and

obtain a Door Activity or Solicitation form and follow the directions. Regardless if the form says do not submit

until 60 days before the drive, do it NOW. They have even made it easier, you can go online and file your form

electronically this year. Just go to: http://fredmeyermedia.com/doorway_entry/index.html and follow the on

screen instructions. They usually respond in a few days.

Lastly … I am Blessed to have the opportunity to be your NEW Tootsie Roll Chairman. I can't thank Kim
