STANDARD PRODUCT OFFERINGS

The model number, customer part number (if applicable), a description and a serial number are all imprinted on an ID tag that is attached to the axle (as shown in figure 3).

Older trailer axle product ID tags were made of mylerand located near the center of the axle beam. Newertrailer axle products have a stainless steel ID taglocated on the inside edge of the brake chamberbracket.

The part number is used to identify the axle specifications. This number should be referred towhen contacting Hendrickson to determine the appropriate service parts. The serial number is usedto identify a particular axle along with all of the component parts as specified by the customer at thetime of order. The axle description serves as a generic description of the axle assembly and can beused to determine some specific axle configurationparameters.

TRLAXLE MODEL NUMBERS

In June 2008, Hendrickson announced the implementation of a new configuration system fornonintegrated trailer axles called TRLAXLE. Your customer service representative will be able to create a TRLAXLE model number and provide a price on most HN (D22) and HP (P22) axles when you send in your completed Axle OrderingGuide (L964) or Electronic Axle Ordering Guide(E964). Other specialty axles (drop- or raised-center axles, A45/A65, K22/K30, D10/D21 and T24)will continue to use their current model number des-ignations, like D22AU603A2-2 or K30AX603A22-2.

Most HN and HP axle specs have been converted to new TRLAXLE.### model numbers. In most cases, the TRLAXLE bill of material will be identical to theD22 or P22, except with following componentchanges, if applicable:

• Stemco Voyager is the standard seal replacingChicago Rawhide

• Abex 3030-197 brake lining (Abex 931-162 for 12.25" × 7.50" brake size) is the standard brake lining; Spicer Silver Supreme and Haldexbrake linings are discontinued

• Hendrickson's patented axle filter is the standard on all axles

• New configurations require specifying (1) slacks only, (2) both slacks and chambers or (3) neither slacks or chambers; we cannot configure chambers only

• ABS sensors on drum brake specs are 90 degrees, not straight

• ABS sensors on air disc brake specs are straight, not 90 degrees

• Castellated nuts are not configurable and must be ordered separately

In general, TRLAXLE product allows all the samestandards and options currently available onINTRAAX®, such as:

• Hendrickson proprietary wheel-end packages:HVS (3-yr), HLS (5-yr) and HUS® (7-yr)

• TIREMAAX® CP and EC• Brake sizes, plus 121/4" × 71/2", 121/4" × 51/2" and

121/4" × 5"• Brake lining options

In addition to a new TRLAXLE model number,Hendrickson made the axle description more meaningful. Below is a guideline for interpreting the new description of your TRLAXLE model number.Newly created, non-configurable axle specs and specialty axles will also adopt this new descriptionlogic. The following box provides a detailed explanation of all the new axle description codes.

BRAKE SETUP CONFIGURATIONS

A typical trailer axle is set up so that the horizontalaxis passing through the axle assembly will alsopass through the centerline of the brake cam. In atypical setup (figure 4 and 5), the brake cams areset to the front or rear of the axle with the slackadjuster pointed up away from the road for “CamForward Orientation” (figure 5) or down towards the road for "Cam Rearward Orientation" (figure 4). Using these two orientations allows the cam to rotate (open) in the same direction of travel as thetires. Using an opposite orientation (i.e. cams to the rear with the slacks pointing up away from theroad) causes the cam to open against the rotation of the tires. This condition is known as “cam opposite,” or “reverse cam rotation.” For more information on reverse cam rotation, refer to the “cam same vs. cam opposite” section of this guideline.

The use of different types of suspensions sometimesrequire that the brake cams, air chambers, etc. belocated in a position off the horizontal centerline ofthe axle. For straight axles, the axle can be clockedto any position within 10 degrees of the horizontalcenterline (figure 6). Drop center axles and axleswith tire inflation systems require the customer tospecify the orientation of the drop center portion of the axle as well as the orientation of the brake cam.

GROSS AXLE WEIGHT RATING AND AXLE BEAM RATING

GROSS AXLE WEIGHT RATING

This section will help vehicle manufacturers determine the load carrying capacity of aHendrickson trailer axle with easy to use reference charts, as well as explaining how the axle weight rating is determined. The gross axleweight rating (GAWR) is the load carrying capacity of an axle and is determined by the lowest ratedcomponent in the assembly.

If you are unsure how to use the charts in this section, or your axle is not included in the charts, contact Hendrickson. To obtain a written applicationapproval of a GAWR, a request can be submitted via the Internet at www.hendrickson-intl.com. An axle rating provided by Hendrickson will only coverthe axle beam and brake system, as these are thecomponents that Hendrickson manufacturers. Anycomponents not manufactured by Hendrickson suchas wheel ends, tires, vehicle, etc. should have ratingsprovided by the component or vehicle manufacturer.

AXLE BEAM RATING

The axle beam ratings provided in this book are the load carrying capacity of the axle tube and spindleassembly only and are based on several different factors. Suspension type and suspension mounting centers; axle wall thickness and track; wheel type(dual or single), and offset dimension for a singlewheel application are required.

DIMENSIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR AXLEBEAM RATING

SUSPENSION TYPE AND SUSPENSION MOUNTINGCENTERS

It is important to understand the difference betweenmechanical spring centers or air suspension beamcenters and vehicle frame centers as many peopleconfuse these dimensions. The mechanical springcenters distance is the distance from the centerline of the mechanical spring to the centerline of the other mechanical spring (figure 7).

figure 7

Page 16: L980 -Trailer Axle Application Guide - hendrickson-intl.com · PDF fileAny reference to brand names in this publication ... † T24 - Drive axle / Truck spindle, ... Trailer Axle Application

In air suspensions applications the “air suspensionbeam centers” are defined as distance from the centerline of the axle connection to the other centerline of the axle connection (as shown in figure 8).

Vehicle frame centers relate to the frame, or chassisof the vehicle and not to the mechanical spring centers or air ride beam centers. It is important toprovide the correct dimension when requesting a rating for a Hendrickson Trailer Axle.

WALL THICKNESS

Standard trailer axle product offerings are available with nominal wall thicknesses of ½ , 5/8 and true / full wall thicknesses of 5/8 and ¾inches.

NOTE: The ½ inch nominal wall thickness trailer axleis approved for mechanical springsuspensions only.

APPLICATION GUIDE — HENDRICKSON TRAILER AXLE

16L980 B

AXLE TRACK

For dual wheels, track is measured from center tocenter of the dual wheel set-up. For axles using single tires with a zero offset wheel, track is measured from the center of the tire or wheel to the center of the other tire or wheel.(figure 10)

If the application uses a single wheel that is eitherinset or outset the rating is affected. The effects aredescribed in detail later in “Beam Rating ChartsSingle Offset Wheels.”

BEAM RATING - SUPER SINGLE OFFSETTIRES

The use of offset tires can affect the axle rating. Forapplications where dual offset wheels are utilized oran application that uses a zero offset super-singletire, the axle rating will not be affected. However, the use of an outset or inset super-single tire doeschange the way in which the axle is loaded andtherefore affects how the axle will be rated.

Inset super-single tires move the point at which the axle is loaded inboard towards the center of thevehicle. Using this type of wheel will not affect theaxle beam rating, but can significantly reduce the life of the outer bearing. To determine the effect thatthis will have on a particular axle application, contact Hendrickson.

The use of a super-single outset tire configurationmoves the load point out away from the center of thevehicle, which increases the bending load in the axleand also decreases the bearing life. To determine therating for an axle that uses an outset wheel, contactHendrickson engineering for assistance.

NOTE: Outset single wheel – Max allowable outset is 2 inches and outset applications must usea HP (P22) spindle. Offset (outset) wheels are not approved on HN (D22) spindleapplications.

AXLE BEAM RATING - STRAIGHT AXLES

The charts at the end of this section should be usedto determine an axle beam rating for Straight AxlesOnly, assuming a particular suspension mountingcenter dimension. The graph provides ratings for HN (D22), HP (P22) and T24 model axles in allavailable wall thickness for use in a mechanicalspring or air suspensions.

In order to use the graph, the following is needed:

• Axle wall thickness

• Nominal axle rating

• Suspension mounting centers

• Air spring centers (air suspension only)

• Suspension pivot to axle center (air suspension only)

• Suspension pivot to air spring center (air suspension only)

• Axle overhang

With all of this information, the axle beam rating caneasily be determined from the beam rating graph tofollow.

MECHANICAL SPRING SUSPENSIONS

To calculate the axle beam rating on mechanicalspring suspension, use the following technique:

1. Determine the axles nominal rating from (TABLE C on page 18).

2. Determine the suspension mounting centers. Fora mechanical spring suspension, the suspensionmounting centers are equal to the spring centers.

3. Determine the axle track.4. Determine the axle overhang by subtracting the

mounting centers from the axle track anddividing by two.

5. Refer to the “Hendrickson Trailer Axle BeamRatings” graph to determine the percentage ofnominal rating (page 22).

6. Multiply the axle nominal rating by the percent of nominal rating.

EXAMPLE 1 To find the axle beam rating for an application thatuses a mechanical spring suspension with an axlethat has a ½ inch wall thickness and a 711/2-inchtrack length with suspension mounting centers of341/2 inches. Axle beam rating can be determined as follows:

1. Nominal rating 1/2 inch wall axle = 22,500pounds

2. Suspension mounting centers = 341/2 inches3. Axle track = 711/2 inches4. Axle Overhang = 1/2 x (711/2 - 341/2) = 181/2

inches5. From graph, percent of nominal rating =

EXAMPLE 1

To find the axle beam ratings for an application thatuses an air suspension with an axle that has a 5/8

inch wall thickness and a 711/2 inch track length with front mounting centers of 35 inches, rear mounting centers of 30 inches, B = 20 inches and C = 35 inches. Axle beam rating can be determinedas follows:

1. Nominal rating 5/8 inch wall axle = 25,000pounds.

2. Calculate dimension A

3. Calculate dimension D = (20/35) × 2.5 = 1.43inches

4. Calculate effective beam centers = 35 - (1.43 ×2) = 32.14 inches

5. Axle overhang = 1/2 × (71.5 - 32.14) = 19.68inches

6. Refer to the “Hendrickson Trailer Axle BeamRatings” graph to determine the percentage ofnominal rating (page 22)

7. Multiply the axle nominal rating by the percent of nominal rating

NOTE: The use of trailer axles with a 1/2 inch nominalwall thickness in air suspensions requiresapproval from Hendrickson applicationengineering.

NOTE: The graphs on the following page for axlebeam ratings assume the axle uses standarddual offset wheels, or single wheels with nooffset and are for on-highway applicationsonly.

AIR RIDE SUSPENSIONS

For air suspensions, axle ratings are based on thelocation of the suspension attachment relative to theaxle spindles. The suspension location is defined asthe effective suspension centers.

The effective suspension centers are determined usingthe front and rear suspension mounting locations to determine where the effective suspension centercrosses the axle center (figure 12).

To calculate the axle beam rating on an air suspension, use the following technique:(Refer to figure 12)

1. Determine the Nominal Rating

2. Calculate dimension A

3. Calculate dimension D

4. Calculate efffective beam centers

5. Calculate the overhang = 1/2 × (track - effectivebeam centers)

6. Refer to the “Hendrickson Trailer Axle BeamRating graph to determine the percentage ofnominal ratings” (Refer to figure 13 on page 22)

AXLE BEAM RATING – DROP CENTER AXLES

The charts at the end of this section should be usedto determine an axle beam rating for drop–centeraxles only. The graph provides ratings for HN, HPand T24 model axles in all available wall thicknessfor use in a mechanical spring or air suspensions. In order to use these graphs the following is needed:

• Axle wall thickness

• Suspension mounting centers

• Axle overhang

With this information, the axle beam rating can easilybe selected from the appropriate graph.

To calculate the axle beam rating for a drop–centeraxle, use the following technique:

1. Determine the axle wall thickness.

2. Determine the suspension mounting centers.

3. Determine the axle track.

4. Determined the axle overhang by subtracting the mounting centers from the axle track anddividing by two.

5. Refer to the “Hendrickson Trailer Drop – centerAxle Beam Ratings” graph to determine the axlerating A (figure 14 on page 24).

EXAMPLE 1

To fine the axle beam ratings for an application thatuses a mechanical spring suspension with an axlethat had a 5/8 inch wall thickness and a 711/2 inchtrack length with suspension mounting centers of341/2 inches. Axle beam rating can be determined asfollows:

1 - Axle wall = 5/8 inch2 - Suspension mounting centers = 341/2 inches3 - Axle track = 711/2 inches4 - Axle overhang = 1/2 x (711/2 - 341/2) = 181/2

S-CAMS AND BRAKES

SERVICE BRAKE REQUIREMENTS

Hendrickson offers a variety of sizes and models ofbrakes. Federal law requires all brakes / axles meetthe performance standard set by FMVSS-121 regulation. FMVSS-121 is applicable to vehicles that travel more than 55 MPH and brakes that are rated less than 29,000 pounds.

Canadian law requires brakes meet CMVSS-121.CMVSS-121 requires that all brakes meet a draw bar requirement. If a trailer brake assembly will beused in Canada, it must meet Canadian draw barcertification requirements.

The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has the responsibility of ensuring that their trailers meet the certification requirements. For additionalinformation regarding brake certifications contactHendrickson engineering.

The following section is to be used to aid in theselection of the appropriate brake for the application. Each brake approval shown is based on gross axleweight rating (GAWR), static loaded radius (SLR), air chamber size, brake adjuster length (S-cam brake only) and the brake lining material.

BRAKE TYPE

Hendrickson Trailer Axles can be ordered with double anchor pin (DAP) S-cam drum brakes, or air disc brakes. Each of these brakes can be configured to meet a variety of performance andpackaging considerations (figure 15).

CAM SAME VS. CAM OPPOSITE

To ensure safe operation and maximum durability ofparts such as brake linings and tires, it is necessaryto position and install the axle with the proper camrotation. It is required that the axle assembly beinstalled so that in the forward direction of the vehiclethe cams rotate in the same direction as the wheels. When the brake is installed in this configuration it isknown as “cam same.” When the wheel rotation isopposite of the cam rotation, the brake is considered“cam opposite.” Examples of “cam same” are shownbelow (figure 16).

Installation in which the camshaft rotation is oppositeof wheel rotation can cause brake noise, chatter andwheel “hop.” Only “cam same” installations meet therequirements of these guidelines. However, somesuspension systems do not have enough clearanceto allow the axle to be mounted with “cam same.”Approval for “cam opposite” uses is rarely granted, but may be requested on an individual basis by submitting a Hendrickson Trailer Spec Form toHendrickson engineering.

Failure to obtain application approval or the use of Hendrickson brakes or their components in non-approved applications will void Hendrickson'swarranty coverage.

AXLE STRUCTURAL RATING VS. BRAKEPERFORMANCE RATING

The axle beam rating considers the structural strength of the axle and is essentially the load carrying capability of the axle. Specifically, it is howmuch weight the axle can carry (as shown below).

The brake rating is the maximum load the brake iscapable of stopping, while meeting FMVSS-121requirements. In short, it is the stopping power. Brakerating is dependent on brake size, lining type, brakepower and tire static loaded radius (as shown belowin figure 17).

The gross axle weight rating (GAWR) must be thevalue of the lowest rated component of the axleassembly. This includes all weight rated componentsof the axle such as the brake components, brake lining, tires, hubs and drums. It is common practiceto have an axle with an axle beam rating at 23,000pounds used in conjunction with a brake configuration with a brake rating at 20,000 pounds. In this case, the GAWR would be that of the lowest rated component or 20,000 pounds.

S-CAM DRUM BRAKE RATINGS

The performance of a S-cam drum brake is determined by the brake diameter, brake width, input torque, lining type and the static loaded radiusof the tire. The nomenclature used to identify the sizeof the brake is to specify the diameter of the brake bythe width of the brake. For example, a 16.5x7 brakerefers to a 16.5-inch diameter brake that has a widthof 7 inches. As shown in the figure below. Brake certification is available from Hendrickson engineering.

BRAKE CHAMBER BRACKETS ANDSLACK ADJUSTER CLEARANCE

Hendrickson has two styles of brake chamber brackets:standard and high rise (figure 19). Slack selectiondepends on the brake chamber bracket selected. On12¼ inch brakes, if you select the standard or highrise brake chamber bracket, you must get curvedslacks for adequate clearance between the slackbody and axle tube.
