Cordoba is a city with a huge cultural and monumental heritage. Its strategic situation
near the Guadalquivir River, once navigable, and the heritage of various people who were
settled in their rich land, have converted the city in a privileged place.
Located in the interior of the autonomous community of Andalusia, Cordoba is a
compendium of past and modernity. This ancient city, declared world heritage site, is a
living legacy of the different cultures that settled in it throughout its history. Few places in
the world can boast of having been the capital of Hispania Ulterior under the Roman
Empire, and capital of the Umayyad Caliphate. This splendor is palpable in the
intelligentsia of this center of knowledge, which has given birth to figures like Seneca,
Averroes and Maimonides.
Mosques, libraries, baths and souks, abound in the city, building the foundations of the
European Renaissance. During the long European Middle Ages, letters and sciences
flourished in “Corduba”. The city had many sources, public lighting and drainage system,
during the time of Caliph Splendor.

Walk through Cordoba old town means discover a beautiful network of alleyways,
squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the mosque-Cathedral, reflection
of the importance of the city in medieval times and authentic symbol of the capital.
Not forgetting his glorious past, Cordoba is a modern city that has managed to adapt to
modern times in order to offer the most modern infrastructures and services, as well as
a wide range of hotel room availability.
Its historic center was declared world heritage by Unesco in 1994. Ten years earlier, in
1984, it had been the Mosque. The city was nominated for the European cultural capital
for the year 2016, being a finalist to represent Spain. In addition the Cordoba Patios
Festival was designated Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in December
2012.
Cordoba is also synonymous with art, culture and leisure, thanks to the multitude of
cultural events organized throughout the year: Flamenco festivals, concerts, ballet...
activities complemented with a large number of museums and a vibrant nightlife.
Meanwhile, the province is home to important samples of the Andalusian legacy, which
has its greatest exponent in Medina Azahara, located on the outskirts of the city. But
also holds a great show to the lovers of nature. The natural parks of “Sierra de Cardeña”
in “Los Pedroches” and “Montoro”, “Sierra de Hornachuelos” and “Sierras Subbéticas”
offer the possibility of practicing all kinds of sports in the open air, at the time that you
can enjoy the richness of this province.

complete evolution of style Umayyad in Spain, as well as styles Gothic, Renaissance and
Baroque of the Christian construction.
Known nowadays as the Catedral de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora (Cathedral of Our
Lady of the Assumption) in an ecclesiastical way, or just La Mezquita de Córdoba (The
Mosque of Cordoba) in general terms, the Mosque is the most important building in the
city. It is also one of the most important monuments of Islamic architecture in Spain, as
well as the most emblematic example of Spanish-Muslim Umayyad art. Since the 13th
century, and even today it is a Catholic Church, the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of
Cordoba.

Inside the Mosque, Cordoba
It has been declared cultural heritage of humanity as part of the historic centre of the city.
Its construction as a mosque started in the year 785, after the Muslim invasion of the
Iberian Peninsula. The building underwent expansions during the Cordoba Emirate and
the Caliphate of Cordoba. In 1238, after the Reconquest, his consecration as a Cathedral
took place with the Episcopal ordination of its first bishop, Lope de Fitero.

In 1523 took place the greater alteration of the monument with the construction of a
Renaissance cruciform basilica in the plateresque style in the Centre of the Muslim
building. Today the architectural ensemble constitutes both the most important
monument of Cordoba and the Andalusian architecture, along with the Alhambra (in
Granada)
Declared of cultural interest, it had 1.67 million visitors by 2015 and is one of the most
visited monuments in Spain. It was included among the 12 public treasures of Spain in
2007. It has been awarded as the best site for tourists in Europe and the sixth best site in
the world according to a TripAdvisor contest.
Since the early 2000s, Spanish Muslims have lobbied the Roman Catholic Church to allow
them to pray in the cathedral. This Muslim campaign has been rejected on multiple
occasions, both by the church authorities in Spain and by the Vatican.
The Alcázar de Córdoba (Castle of Cordoba), with its thick defensive walls, served both
as a fortress and a palace, and is a perfect illustration of the development of Cordovan
architecture through the ages. Roman and Visigoth ruins lie side by side with Arabic

remains in this magnificent building, which was once the favourite residence of the
different rulers of the city.
However, when Cordoba was taken by Fernando III «the Saint» in 1236, the former
Caliphal Palace was in a pitiful, ruinous state. Alfonso X «the Wise» began the restoration
work, which was finished off during the reign of Alfonso XI. It has fulfilled many different
functions over the years, such as Headquarters of the Inquisition, or a prison (first half of
the 20th century).

This emblematic building was created in the year 1570, by express mandate of King Felipe
II who, how great lover of horses, wanted to create a new breed of horses in Cordoba, the
Andalusian horse – Spanish blood-horse.
The Royal Stables have been
outstanding part not only of
the Cordoba equestrian

which is considered national
heritage, was vital for the
enclosure in which it is framed,
next to the Jewish quarter and

restaurant.

Bodegas Campos is one of the most emblematic places, a must-see location in the city of
Cordoba. Both its menu and the atmosphere of this singular space are imbued with the
same philosophy: renewed tradition and authenticity.
Bodegas Campos work ever since it started out has long been valued by various awards
and honors, although the main satisfaction for this company has been and is that anyone
who enters its doors feels like at home, because it is truly theirs.
Says the writer Antonio Gala that “in this house you are welcomed with a warmth full of
affection", and it seems to vouch for it the multitude of photographs of smiling
personalities that cover the walls, between old posters of fairs and bullfights. Or what the
poet Pablo García Baena, awarded with the Príncipe de Asturias Prize, said: "this is the
ancestral house of friendship".
King of Spain Felipe VI and Queen
Leticia, in a recent visit to BODEGAS
CAMPOS.
What a spectacular close for this beautiful chapter!
