as an active volunteer in his hometown while growing up, tyson knew that he wanted to continue to help out when he enrolled at lakehead. when he arrived here, he discovered countless opportunities to contribute to both campus life and the wider community, while still finding time to complete his concurrent honours bachelor of arts and Education degrees. his volunteer efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as he received an ontario medal for young volunteers in 2013 from the honourable david c. onley, lieutenant governor of ontario.

throughout its history, lakehead university has developed strong connections and partnerships with the first nation, non-status, Métis, and inuit peoples of northwestern ontario and canada. We have sought to develop innovative programming that honours and celebrates aboriginal heritage while providing culturally appropriate support for the next generation of aboriginal learners.

students will develop an understanding of aboriginal culture, heritage, and language by participating in activities that heighten their awareness of aboriginal issues and identity. Various programs and courses are available to learn about aboriginal language, history and culture, and they are available to all students. other options include an indigenous speaker series, elders program, smudging, sweat lodge ceremonies, feasts, traditional teachings, cross-cultural workshops, pow wows, art displays, and much more!

aboriginal cultural and support services (acss)

for individuals of aboriginal ancestry, lakehead university’s acss provides a culturally supportive environment for first nation, non-status, Métis, and inuit learners.

through a wide range of academic, individual, cultural and transitional services and support, the acss assists aboriginal students in reaching their academic goals. all students have access to the aboriginal resource centre and lounge, which consists of an elders’ room, computer lab, relaxation area, and a place to study or visit with peers.

you will enjoy extensive on-campus fitness facilities at the c.J. sanders fieldhouse and our newest facility, the hangar.

the c.J. sanders fieldhouse features the 15,000-square-foot thunderdome gymnasium, state-of-the-art Wolves’ den fitness centre, newly-renovated, 50-metre, eight-lane swimming pool, cardio room, outdoor sports fields, beach volleyball courts, Kinesiology labs, squash court, and change rooms complete with saunas.

the hangar, lakehead’s newest 50,000-square-foot student athletic facility features a 200-metre track, pro-grade artificial turf field, climbing wall, and additional weight training, aerobic and cardio areas. the hangar is also home to the sports Medicine clinic.

orillia campus facilities

as a newer campus, lakehead’s orillia campus will see its athletics facilities develop in years to come. in the interim, full-time lakehead university – orillia campus students are eligible for membership at the yMca of simcoe/Muskoka during the fall and winter semesters. there is no additional cost for the membership as it is covered by your athletics fees.

the yMca offers a wide variety of recreational activities to help you stay active and reduce stress. as a bonus, memberships can be used at select yMca facilities outside of the simcoe/Muskoka region when you are away during holidays or academic placements.

offers information about applying to programs, admissions requirements and advanced standing assessments. campus tours, preview days and other special events are also arranged by the office.

chaplaincy

serves the whole university community, regardless of religious affiliation. personal concerns, spiritual direction, addictions, and grief counselling are issues for discussion with the chaplain.

continuing education and distributed learning

offers seminars, courses and complete programs in alternative delivery formats, such as web-based online instruction and independent study.

ombudsperson

provides help and advice with an impartial view on a wide range of issues, including academic concerns, appeals, campus services, personal matters, and landlord and tenant relations.

registrarial services

provides information on registration, academic records, course timetables, academic calendars, and enrolment verification.

student accessibility services

coordinates services and facilitates academic accommodations for students with disabilities. students with special needs related to a disability are encouraged to contact student accessibility services as early as possible to arrange for any academic and/or physical accommodations that may be necessary.

student awards and financial aid

offers various forms of assistance related to student loans (osap), scholarships and bursaries, financial planning, and the on-campus work-study programs.

student health and counselling

the thunder Bay centre provides comprehensive health services through a team of registered nurses, doctors and counsellors. services include physician appointments, referrals to specialists, and personal counselling.

the orillia Wellness centre offers access to personal counselling, a naturopathic doctor, chaplain, and resources on health and wellness services in orillia and the surrounding area.

lakehead will help you transition to university and throughout your years. We provide academic advising and support, tutoring services, career exploration, co-operative education opportunities, leadership development, and job preparation. We also offer new student orientation and first-year experience programs.

kimberly is the perfect example of what can happen with hard work, passion, and perseverance. she has a rare neuromuscular disorder that requires her to use a wheelchair and rely on the help of a special skills dog. but that didn’t stop her from graduating with the highest average in lakehead University’s history program and earning an ontario graduate scholarship worth $15,000 to put toward her master’s degree.

Who is eligible?

academic entrance scholarships are automatically awarded, with no application required, to canadian scholars entering lakehead university from a recognized canadian high school curriculum.

how and When are academic entrance scholarship offers Made?

academic entrance scholarship averages are calculated based on the highest six Grade 12 u or M academic marks available at the time of the scholarship offer.

scholarship offers will be extended in two rounds. round one will take place in May 2014, and round two will take place in July 2014. Qualified students will be awarded the best scholarship from either of the two rounds.

out-of-province students must provide mid-term marks by the end of april 2014 to be considered for scholarships. final marks must be received by the end of July 2014 to be eligible for scholarship consideration. students who are admitted to lakehead university after May 2014 may be considered for scholarships.

could the Value of My entrance scholarship offer change?

yes, your scholarship offer can always improve! your final entrance scholarship value will be the best value from either round one or round two.

are entrance scholarships renewable?

yes – they are both renewable and regainable!

students awarded a renewable entrance scholarship must maintain a minimum 80% (or 90% average for the free tuition scholarship) in each academic year, according to the terms found in the scholarship offer. a normal, full course load is required in each year of study based on the student’s program of study and year level. students who take less than a 100% course load but maintain an 80% average are eligible to receive a pro-rated scholarship value.

students who do not maintain the minimum 80% average requirement to renew their scholarship may regain their scholarship at the same amount in subsequent years if an 80%+ average is achieved in their program’s normal full course load*.

students who do not maintain the minimum 90% average requirement to renew their free tuition scholarship may regain a scholarship valued at $2,500 in subsequent years if an 80%+ average is achieved in their program’s normal full course load*.

*Students who take less than a 100% course load but maintain an 80% average are eligible to receive a pro-rated scholarship value.

Example: A student receives the Free Tuition scholarship. After 1st year, the student’s average is 79% so the student loses the scholarship for 2nd year. During 2nd year, the student’s average increases to 85%. The student will regain a scholarship valued at $2,500/year (not free tuition) beginning in their 3rd year.

No gaps in studies are permitted. All scholarships are payable in the first 4 years of the degree program only.

awarded by nomination to a graduating student who models good citizenship within their high school and community, from each of the high schools in northwestern ontario and simcoe county. a minimum 85% average in Grade 12 u or M academic marks as of May 2014 is required. renewable for four years, provided a minimum 80% average is maintained for each subsequent year.

This scholarship may be combined with the Lakehead University Academic Entrance Scholarship up to the maximum value of free tuition. This scholarship cannot be held with the Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship.

being a student in lakehead University’s anthropology department, and working with dr. carney

matheson, gave margaret the opportunity to conduct hands-on research around the world, and she took full advantage. along with being involved in projects in south america, tanzania, and italy, she also travelled to india in her third year to examine residue on stone tools to gain a better understanding of the dispersal route of humans after leaving africa. throughout her time as an undergraduate student at lakehead, she published five articles, four archaeological reports, and made four conference presentations. she also received early acceptance to oxford University’s phd program while still an honours student, where she is now studying with the foremost experts in the field.

chance to make a career out of it. after getting her diploma in chemical engineering technology

from cambrian college, she enrolled at lakehead to further her education. While studying her

understandinG adMissionsapplication statusonce you have applied to lakehead university, you will receive instructions on how to access the online student information portal “myinfo.” through myinfo, you can check the status of your application, including the status of any required supporting documentation. you will also receive a personal lakehead university email account. check your lakehead email account regularly for updates on your application, as well as information on scholarships and bursaries, residence, registration, orientation, and more.

alternate offersstudents who do not meet the admission requirements of their program of choice but who do meet the General admission requirements of lakehead university will automatically be considered for an alternate program.

advanced standinginternational Baccalaureate (iB): applicants who have completed an international Baccalaureate diploma will be considered for admission provided that the completed diploma includes the subject area requirements for their chosen program of study. applicants must possess a total score of 28 in six subjects, three of which must be at the higher level (hl), with no score less than four in any subject.

applicants presenting the iB diploma may be considered for advanced standing credit in some higher level subjects provided a score of 5 or better has been attained in the higher level subject. please note that no advanced standing will be granted on standard level (sl) courses.

adVanced placeMent (ap): courses and examinations may be used to determine admissibility and will also be automatically considered for advanced standing credit or exemption. applicants who have achieved a minimum grade of 4 on the placement exam may be eligible to receive advanced standing credit. students must ensure that exam results are submitted to the office of admissions and recruitment for consideration for advanced standing.

summer school / night school / correspondencelakehead university accepts Grade 12 u or M courses or equivalent taken through summer school, night school or correspondence. it is the student’s responsibility to inform lakehead university of any courses taken outside of regular high school, and to ensure that final official grades are received no later than august 13, 2014.

repeated courses (high school applicants only)lakehead university does not penalize high school students who have repeated courses. the highest Grade 12 u or M grade or equivalent will be used when calculating the admission average.

what kind of applicant arE yoU?lakehead university applicants are defined based upon their previous education experience. for each applicant category, admission requirements may vary. it is important that you determine what type of student applicant you are to ensure you meet the minimum requirements for admission consideration. if you have any questions about admission requirements, required documents, or related concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the office of admissions and recruitment.

student definitionshigh school studenta student who is currently attending high school on a full-time basis or has recently graduated (within two years), and who has not completed any post-secondary studies at another institution.

university transfer studenta student who has attended a university and successfully completed university level course work since leaving high school/college with a minimum overall average of c/60% or equivalent. applicants must also ensure that they hold the minimum program-specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12 u or M level or equivalent. transfer credit may be awarded for courses in which an applicant has achieved a standing of at least 60% or equivalent.

college transfer studenta student who has completed a minimum of one year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school with a minimum overall average of B/70% or equivalent. students who have completed a college diploma with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 or equivalent will be considered for transfer credit and can look forward to the opportunity of turning their diploma into a degree. students from an aBhe accredited Bible college may be eligible to receive transfer credit.

Mature studentlakehead university provides opportunities for admission to mature students who do not meet the General admission requirements, but hold promise of academic success as determined by the admissions committee.

a mature student is a canadian citizen or permanent resident who:

• has not been engaged in full-time studies for at least two years,

• has attempted less than one full year of academic studies at an accredited community college,

• has no prior university enrolment, and

• does not meet the General admission requirements But successfully meets the minimum program-specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12 u or M level or equivalent.

Visiting studentany student who is currently attending another university and wants to take a course or courses at lakehead university may apply to do so on a letter of permission or as an exchange student. these students must meet the course prerequisite/minimum average requirements for the specific courses/programs for which they apply.

international studentapplicants applying from a secondary school program outside canada will be evaluated under the admission requirements pertaining to the country in which they were educated. please visit admissions.lakeheadu.ca to determine the requirements for your country. in order to be considered for admission, applicants must possess the required qualifications with an appropriate academic average as determined by lakehead university.

academic english program (aep)international students who successfully meet our academic requirements but whose english language proficiency scores fall below our english language proficiency requirements may be eligible for admission under the lakehead academic english program (aep). each student will need to successfully complete aep before proceeding into their academic program.

We offer a wide range of programs designed to encourage you, as an aboriginal person who might not meet the regular or mature student admission criteria, to pursue a university education in an academically, socially, and culturally supportive environment.

native access program (nap)the native access program is a nine-month full-time preparatory program designed to provide you with the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of a university degree. you will study in a culturally sensitive and aboriginal-friendly environment while you take preparatory courses to help you improve your study, mathematical, and writing skills. you will also have the opportunity to take some degree courses and be supported throughout the year with additional counselling and tutoring. upon successful completion of the native access program, you may choose to pursue an undergraduate degree at the university.

native nurses entry program (nnep)the native nurses entry program is a nine-month preparatory program designed to provide you with the opportunity to obtain the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of the four-year Bachelor of science in nursing degree program.

GateWayno application, automatically consideredthe Gateway program offers students the opportunity to pursue university studies while providing enriched supports and programming. Gateway is geared towards students who successfully meet their academic program course prerequisites, but whose academic average does not represent their academic potential. no application is necessary; students will automatically be considered for admission under Gateway as part of the regular admission assessment process.

acadeMic enGlish proGraM (aep)no application, automatically consideredlakehead university’s academic english program (aep) is an intensive english language program designed to improve international students’ english language proficiency. through a combination of academic english, cultural, and social activities, students will be immersed in practicing the english language in real life situations.

international students who successfully meet our academic requirements but are below our english language proficiency requirements are encouraged to consider the aep. students who fall into this category are encouraged to apply for their lakehead university program of choice, and once all documents are received, students will automatically be considered for admission through the aep.

the aep has five levels; each level is 14 weeks in duration. students will be placed in a level based on placement test results taken prior to the start of the program. upon successful completion of level 5, students will move into their academic program of study.
