Annua l Preach ina and Teach ina Conf e r enceOne of the activities that we are always a part

of is the annual preaching and teaching conference, which is held in a different area every year. Whenwe arrived in South Africa, AlZimmerman, told us thatfor the local African members, it is a highlight of theyear for most of them. Many people save all year forthe travel fees and cos t of the food and itis always agood time of fellowship. This year it was held in PortElizabeth, about 4 hours from George.

For many years we were in charge of the annualpreaching and teaching conference, but now it is inthe hands of the local people. When we first arrivedthe re were two sets of classes each day, one formen and one for women. Over the years we haveexpanded it to include two types of Sunday schools, three ages of youth, young adults, elders, deaconsand we even had separate worship sen/ices for theyouth. We found out that many of the youth felt leftout when they came to conference and many timesidle times led to many troubles. We therefore planned

This is t ile men's class that I taught at the annual conference .

accordingly so that all age groups were ministered towhen they came to conference.

One of the really tough things that one has todo in cross cultural work is to let go and let the localpeople take over. You always hope that they carry onwith the work in a productive way, but sometimeswhatyou think is most productive does not always translateinto the local hands. They do different thingsand whilea lot of things are different, not all things are wrong.Anyway, we had hoped that they would continue onwith the classes for all ages to cater for the differentgroups, but this has not happened. They are back tothe men 's and ladies' classes, a class for youth anda class for Sunday School. But conference is still th emain gathering time for the Christians that we workwith and this year's meeting went very well. We hadclose to 300 people in attendance. Fran taught aclass to the women and I taught a class to the menand preached inone of the main sessions. Itis alwaysgood to see the people from all over South Africa and

Fran with some of the youth girls between classes.

The hardest job at conference is always the cooking. But the ladies take care of it with joy in their hearts.to see how the churches are going and inthat we wereencouraged. People came as far as Upington, CapeTown and Klmberiey to be in attendance. Plans arebeing made for the next gathering to be in Upington,in the far northern Cape and we are hoping thatattendance will be good there as it is so far away. Thanks for your prayers for this gathering.

Etc .We have done several trips since our last newsletter, we have gone to Graaff-Reinet, Knysnaand Barkly-West in the Northern Cape for timesof teaching. On the trip to Barkiy-West we took par t in theNorthern cape gathering ofDeo Gloriawhere therewere several baptisms.

/ thought this was a nice picture of the scenery with thereflection of the sky. It willprobably no t look as nicein black and white as it did in color. . . bu t it was verypretty.

Amy Hagedom teaching at the Vacation Bible Schoolwhile she was here fo r three weeks.* Vacation Bible Schools have been opening up new

areas in and around George. We have done twoshorter ones in recent months for half-way housesfor kids and we have been asked to do more duringthe upcoming school holidays.

    * Many of you have helped with an appeal that wemade for help on a roof on some members' househere in George. Three young people who havelost both parents in recent years only had half of aroof on their house. With your help they now havea complete roof over their house and the rain doesnot come in any more. We thank one and all foryour help. Please see pictures at right.

    * Andrew Calvert, th e minister that we work with, turned 60 this year and we had a surprise birthdayparty here at our house for him. 65 people camefrom as far as Graaff-Reinet and Cape Town. Heand I went to Knsyna for a Sunday morning ofservices and when we arrived back at 3 p.m., all65 people were inside our yard behind the gate togreet him. He was very surprised and itwent well.See picture at right.

    * Denzil is still being home schooled and makingstraightA's. He is now taller than Fran and growinginto a fine young man.

    * If you access "Facebook" add either Fran or I aswe have lots of pictures to view there and we cankeep in touch better.

This is the completed roof on the members ' house thatmany ofyou helped with. Thanks again.

    You Can Chan a e th e Laws , But It Takesa Little Lonae r to Chana e Hear t s ...

Greetings from South Africa once again. Whenis a good thing called a bad thing when it is really agood thing? The answer is when it is viewed with apredetermined amount of prejudice or orienta tion. Upuntil 1994, "apartheid" was the law of the land here inSouth Africa. That meant that certain races of peoplehad to stay in certain areas and there were all sorts ofpetty laws relating to where people could or could notgo. While the laws have been repealed, hearts ar e muchharder to change. In February you might remember t ha t we had asurprise 60th birthday party for Andrew Calvert here atour house. Many people came from as far as Cape Townand Graaff-Reinet to help us celebrate and for two hoursthat afternoon we had 65 people in an about our house.Several weeks later we had a visi t f rom an official of themunicipality wondering if we were running a boardinghouse and wanted to see our papers for such. Of coursewe were not running a boarding house and therefore didnot have papers for such a thing. We explained tha t wehave Bible studies and youth groups meeting here andhe seem sat isfied. T h re e w ee ks la te r w e re ce iv ed an

This is the group that gathered for the birthday party ofAndrew Calver t . . . and the reason fo r the visit o f t hemunicipality.

official letter from the municipality informing us that wemust immediately stop all worship services here as thelocalitywas not zoned for a church.Andrew Calvert accompanied me as I took theletter to the municipality for a further explanation. Thegentleman that we talked to would not comment onwhat specific activity was in question or who madethe complaint. I mentioned to him that if the complaintwas concerning Bible studies and if he wanted to stopthese taking place in homes, then he needed to writeevery church in town, not just us. He did mention thatduring the election times, candidates were canvassingthe suburbs to see what kind of complaints they coulde n co u nt er a nd work o n to make the areas better to live info r their const i tuents . I ment ioned to him that Iwa s s ur ethe complaint was not the disturbance as such but that itwas because of th e color of the people gathering at ou rhouse. He t he n s ai d that if we were to write a letter inreply "Please do not mention that fact when you write!!"To make a long story short, after much discussion, Ibrought up the fac t of the bi rthday par ty to which hereplied, "So that was not a regular church service, buta one time happening?? Don't worry; I will explain thatthen to my superiors."Old feelings die hard and it is evident that that iswhat happened here. We stopped the classes here fora few weeks to let the election get over with. We haveheard nothing else and we hope that that is the end of itall. Idid talk to the newspaper editor of the local Georgenewspaper who was licking his chops for a chance towrite abou t it and I also talked to some friends whowere lawyers who had some choice words as to howto respond. But nothing else has come of it and we arehopeful that nothing else will happen. Since tha t timewe have been able to carry as normal and there havebeen no problems.

What a strange experience itwas to go through, butit once again proves that while laws can change easily, hearts take a little longer.

On June 25. Stacy IGarner ofGateway InternationalEducational Services arr ivedwith 6 in terns from var iousparts so the U.S. to work for 5weeks. Conning with hinn wereMelanie Stewart of HamptonGa., CourtneyList ofDavenport Our good friend, Sta-lowa, VickyMoore ofSpringfield Garner, who ledIII., Shelby Cox of Lawton Ok., internship.Caleb Hoke of St. Louis Mo., and Hannah Friskney ofCincinnati Ohio. They were here until July 28.

Just after they arrived we went to Graaff-Reinet onth e 27th fo r t h e a nnua l Vacat ion Bible School the re andthe church there did a magnificent job of doing most ofthe organization. They are the only church so far thatha s organized and really taken a hold of the preparations. They can do itby themselves now and we jus t go to helpwhere we can. We averaged around 600 kids with thelargest attendance being over 800 during one day of theweek. The church also had the interns doing Bible studiesand youth groups during the week. Stacy preached forthe Sunday service. On the 6th of July we all headed an hour north ofGeorge to take part in the annual youth camp that tookplace just outside of Oudtshoorn. Stacy , Fran and Itaught classes and the interns did devotions and helpedwith team building. We had over 80 kids in attendancefrom places such as Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, George, and Graaff-Reinet. That part of th e country can ge textremely cold and we were lucky that it was not toobad. Considering that we have the camp in the middleof winter, we were lucky with the temperatures. From the 13th to the 17th of July we did 2 VacationBible Schools per day here in George in the townshipof Thembalethu. Courtney List from St. Louis ChristianCollege needed to have this tripcount for college credit,so she came up with the theme and lessons. Each internhad a chance to do one lesson. Together, Courtney and

    el

    f

Stacy Garnerwith the interns: (Back) Caleb, Melanie andStacy; (Front) Hannah, Melanie, Vickyand CourtneyFran came up with craft ideas and it all came togethervery well. S ince t he t heme and l es sons were differentt han wha t we did in Graaff-Reinet, all of th e left over craftsfrom George went to Graaff-Reinet for them to use nextyear or whenever they want to use it.Leading up that week we had been informed thatth e a .m . Vacat ion Bible School would be a round 300kids and th e afternoon would be about 1,000. We hadto prepare crafts accordingly. This took a lot of workon the part of the interns and they did crafts very well. The numbers never materialized as we thought, as themorning Vacation Bible School averaged around 70 andthe afternoon about 300. Only on the first day did theafternoon school go around 1,000. When we hold theVacation Bible Schools in Thembalethu, we usually usethe church building, but this year the police wanted tobe involved with the program. On the first morning, theydrove around the area broadcasting about the VacationBible School over a l oudspeaker . They organ ized aschool auditorium for us to use. They advertised on theradio, made rounds around the township, and attendedevery day to help with crowd control. We felt this was anexcellent opportunity to have the children see how wemust have respect for the law and the officers, and abide

Different interns having good times in various places.

by the law of the land. This is a great need today wherethere is so much crime.Getting back to the afternoon of the first day, whenwe arrived in the afternoon of the first day, we wereoverwhelmed with the number being over 1,000. Itwasmayhem! We have found in the past that, when we ar edealing with a large crowd of kids, it is better to havethem line up outside and we have help from the adults/youth in leading them in the hall and seating them in anorderly fashion. The police thought they were doing usa favor by letting the kids just go in as they came. Everyday the kids were at least an hour early and Mondaywas no exception. The hall was full and we never didgain control of the crowd of 1,000 kids or so . We werenot able to give out all the crafts and we were unable togive out treats at the door due to a stampede. It wasfrightening and frustrating for all of us. We got togetherwith the police and discussed how we would like to linethe children up and have them wait untilwe are ready forthem to file into the hall in an orderly way. From Tues.on w e h ad order and it went well. The a t tendance wentway down on Tues. (244) but we feel it was due to thechaos on Mon. However, the attendance grew everyday: Wed. we had 383, Thurs. 457 and by Fri. we had602. Itwas hard work to have two VBS' every day, butthe team pulled through and the VBS' were a successbecause the children learned abou t Jesus .As you can imagine, we were worn out after 2Vacation Bible Schools a day, but itwent well. The localchurch here in George did not help much, and theydo not seem very interested in taking hold of the workthemselves, so this is the last year that the Vacation BibleSchool will take place here inGeorge.

The last week that Stacy and his group were here,we did a smal ler Vacation Bible School in ano ther area ofGeorge called Borgas. We held this inthe afternoons andaveraged about 80 chi ldren. As with the other VacationBible Schools in George, each intern took their turn inpresenting the lesson for the day. AH were involved inhelping with crafts before the school and helping thechildren do the final assemblies during the schools. Theywere well received in all places and saw what itwas liketo work in a different setting outside of the U.S.

Thanks goes to Stacy Garner for all his organizationof the trip and for all of his help. We must thank his wifeAngle and the church at Ferguson, Missouri, for letting

While here the interns met with the youth groups.

The police were out in force helping with the VacationBible School in Thembalethu in George.

Great times at Youth Camp.him be gone for so long. We also thank the interns fortheir hard work. Thanks also goes to all of the churchesand individuals who helped them come and who madeit possible for us to have craft supplies. Most of all, wethank the Lord for the opportunity to serve here throughVBS programs.

On the week end s in be tween the schoo ls andcamp, the interns took part in th e services wherever wewere, whether it was in Graaff-Reinet or George. Oneother Sunday we went to visit the church in Knysna andthey also led the services there. In George and Graaff-Reinet they led the youth and young adult classes andfellowshipped with the churches. Also inbetween times we did sight seeing inGeorge,Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Graaff-Reinet. SouthAfrica is abeautiful country withlots to see and itwas good to exposethem to a s much of the local f lavor a s we could.Stacy, after much prayer and thought has told usthat this was his last trip to South Africa with interns. We were sad to hear t ha t but we understand the manycircumstances that led he and his family to that decision.

r ts imasFirst of all, Fran, Denzil and Iwould like to wish allof our readers a wonderful Merry Christmas for 20091We liveinthe southern hemisphere and as you knowwe

have summer time during Christmas. We stillcannot getused to having warm weather over the Christmas season, but we se e the snow on the news from your part of theworld and it brings back memories. We wish you a greatholiday season and never forget that Jesus is the reasonfo r the season!Right: Pete, Fran, and Denzil at the Augrabie Fails inNorthern South Africa during Conference.

During the last day of September and the first4 days of October we had our annual preaching andteaching conference. This year itwas held in the remotetownof Upington,650 miles north ofGeorge. We had noidea what to expect at this year's conference for severalreasons. One reason was that the publicity for thegathering was very weak and communication was bad.A lot of people did not know the details and, therefore, did not make plans to go. We, therefore, thought thatthe attendance would be very low. Another reason wasthe remoteness of the location as it is a long drive fromanywhere to go to this town. (I tell people to ge t thereyou mus t go to the middle of nowhere and turn left, it isjust down the road ) When we arrived we were verypleased as the attendance was more than we expectedwith about 200 people in attendance. The local churchled by a 94 year old brother did the local preparations verywell and they had the hall, classrooms and the sleepingarrangements all sorted out.Iused to be the chairman ofthe planning committeeforthe conference program butwe have longsince turneditover to the local brothers. That is the way that it shouldbe. When we used to plan the program, we would haveclasses for all ages of youth from Sunday School toYoung Adults, separate youth services and even classes

    GEORGE, SOUTH AFRICA

divided for Elders and Deacons. That ha s all fallen away, they have gone back to just having single age classesfor men, women and youth and adding to that this year, there were not even afternoon classes for anyone. Itwas disheartening to see so many classes fall by thewayside and the teaching not done anymore, but that ishow they planned it and we have to "go withthe flow" soto speak. When they had the semi annual committeeelections this year the local brother thatwas the chairmanwas voted out and the congregations voted in anotheryounger brother. We will see how th e conference goesfrom this point on. We ar e hoping for there to be moreteaching and preaching times as that is what we feel isthe purpose of the annual gathering. We do need thetimes of fellowship, but people plan all year to go to theconference, and for some of them it Is the only strongteaching time of the year. While there, Fran and I both taught a men's andladies class and Ipreached at one of the main sessions.Itwas great to see so many people that we had not seensince the last gathering in 2008 in Port Elizabeth. Manyfaithful Christ ians traveled a long way to be there and thegathering as a whole was a success. Thanks for yourprayers in that regard.
