We learned that the angel Moroni had called us to Brazil to assign us a mission. We are to bear our testimony of what we both saw and heard. We are to gather those who believe it and unite them. This can only be accomplished as the Lord pours His righteousness on those who gather. What a miracle! To see the divided saints be unified under the power of the Holy Ghost as righteousness comes down from heaven.

In the meantime, part of the sealed portion will be translated

in Brazil. Those who gather in faith and unite around Joseph F. Smith’s testimony will be cleansed by the Spirit as they

then learn to obey the celestial law. They will receive and publish part of the sealed portion. It will reveal all things to live in Zion, as well as

be an ensign to gather the rest.

Once the saints become the spiritual temple, a holy city, they will build the House of the Lord on the designated spot. Jesus will appear among them, unlock the rest of the sealed portion, and read it to them.

OUR INVITATION TO COME

My Trip to Brazil I must explain why you did not receive a newsletter in October. Last April, I received an e-mail from people in Brazil. They asked me to visit them. Some wanted to be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. My first thoughts were to give this opportunity to some younger men. I had no desire to leave this land. As I continued reading the e-mail, I found that an angel had visited some of them and told them how to contact me. The entire situation changed. The Spirit moved me to say, “I’ll go.” It also gave me some instructions to baptize and confirm some. I did not know how many I would baptize, but I was given the names of those whom I was directed to ordain elders, servants in the Kingdom of God. I questioned my worthiness but received evidence in a later e-mail of my call to service. Later this past summer, while I was in Michigan, an elder prayed over me for my trip to Brazil. He told not to be concerned about being worthy, adding, “Because you have been called to a work. Step up and do your job.” That is what I did. We learned through e-mails that they had been instructed by the angel Moroni. They had also been visited by the three Nephites. Perhaps in the back of our minds we thought that there were some things we could teach them. We found out that they were well instructed and completely prepared for baptism. Not being a world traveler, I asked Brother Bob Moore, who travels a lot, to accompany me. I had to get a passport and we had to get visas. After receiving the proper paperwork, we departed on October 6 and arrived about noon the next day. Two young men who spoke no English met us. We spoke no Portuguese. I speak a little Spanish, which they understood, so we got along fine. When we arrived at the home of the man who was the leader of the group, we were introduced to each member (Continued on next page)

and were well received. They told us that they would like to be baptized the following day at 2:00 PM. The next morning we went out to a lake to find a good location. At the time appointed, I baptized nine of the group, eight adults and one young girl, after which they went to their homes and changed clothes. I had called for a confirmation service at 7:00 PM, at which time we would confirm the gift of the Holy Ghost and follow with a Sacrament service. After confirming the nine who were baptized, Brother Bob and I ordained the two men whose names I had been given. I prepared and blessed the wine and bread and the first elder whom we ordained served the emblems. A period of time for prayer and testimony followed, which they utilized to its fullest by bearing their testimonies. They spoke in Portuguese, but later, we learned that that they were describing how they felt the fire or burning of the Holy Ghost burst inside them during their confirmation. I testify that the Spirit that filled that room was beyond any expectation that I might of had. We felt that we had accomplished the reason for our trip, but we quickly found out otherwise. During the following week Brother Bob and I felt that we were back in school. They taught us some of the things that angel Moroni had taught them. We were able to share some of what we knew, which confirmed some of those teachings. I believe we all benefitted. At one point, they revealed what the angel said was our mission when we returned to the US. They had told us that they would show us evidence that would help us confirm our mission once we were home. While we were not sure what that would be, I thought it might be the plates of the Book of Mormon and the sealed portion. Friday evening, in a secluded room, that is exactly what the four men presented to us. When they uncovered the plates, I was overwhelmed. I thought of the words of Oliver Cowdery when he and Joseph were met by an angel of God and received the priesthood. He said something about the world being racked and distracted while they were in the presence of the angel. While there was no angel for us to see, I felt the presence of Moroni, who is the protector of the plates. Laying before us were the plates of the Book of Mormon and the sword of Laban. When I was able to speak, I asked if I could hold them in my hands. I took them up and was able to turn the pages that my great-grandfather had used while translating the Book of Mormon. I was also able to examine the sealed portion and the sword of Laban. The sword surprised me a little, for the picture that I had in my mind was different from what I saw. The sword is about three feet long and surprisingly heavy. I checked the edge and found it still sharp. There is so much more to tell about this event that it would cover several pages. For me, this was a very special blessing. I sat in the spiritual presence of the work of God’s hands, as well as in the physical portion of it. The question was asked, why in Brazil? While that might be something for others to consider, the reason was easy for me to answer. The Lord found in Brazil what He could not find in the United States. In Brazil there is a people who will work together to accomplish the Lord’s purpose. They are a people who are one in heart and one in purpose. That purpose is to do the will of God. This group has put into practice the very essence of Zion. They believe and practice the celestial law of God: “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matt 22:36-38). You will notice, He used the word “love” not tolerate. This is what we must learn to obey, the celestial law. Not only to say but to do. JOSEPH F. SMITH
