Names of creators: Nigel Banks Mackenzie, his family and others

Administrative history: Nigel Banks Mackenzie (1836-1924), was born on St Kilda, the son of Nigel or Niel MacKenzie, Church of Scotland minister on the island, and his wife Elizabeth Mackenzie, nee Crawford. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University, after which he became a solicitor and Writer to the Signet. He joined the British Linen Bank and was appointed manager of its Fort William branch in 1868, aged 32. He also ran a legal practice and land agency, and became factor for several Scottish estates, including Lochiel, Ardgour, Glenfintaig, Glenuig and Kingairloch, as well as a British Linen director. He was extremely active in promoting railways, in particular the West Highland Railway to Fort William and its later extension to Mallaig, served as Provost

In 1872 he married Lilias Scott MacKenzie (1851/2-1914) and the couple had 11 children, including Nigel Banks MacKenzie Jr, Donald MacPherson MacKenzie, Margaret Elizabeth MacKenzie, who married John Frederick Rogers in 1916, Mary Helen MacKenzie, who married Henry Cecil Knox Dick, Agnes Cecelia Jane Mackenzie, who married James Hamilton-Gunn and moved to Canada, Margaret Elizabeth MacKenzie, Lilias Kathleen MacKenzie, Edith Mabel MacKenzie, who was confined in the Royal Asylum in Montrose, Frank MacKenzie and Charles Edward Stuart MacKenzie.

He lived on Cameron Square in Fort William, and kept another residence, Camus House or Camusmore in Onich for summer use. He had also a house in Edinburgh, and boat houses at Fort William and Onich, as he was a keen sailor.

Administrative history: John Macdonald was the youngest son of Angus Macdonald of Borodale, who, in 1745 was was the first person to receive a commission from Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie). John Macdonald was sent to be educated at the Scots College, Ratisbon, but returned in 1745 to join Prince Charles, and served during the campaign as lieutenant in Clanranald’s regiment, and was pardoned for his role in the Jacobite rising.

Names of creators: Angus Macdonald, 12th of Glenaladale, his son John Andrew Macdonald, 13th of Glenaladale and various solicitors

Administrative history: John Andrew Macdonald, 13th of Glenaladale (1837-1916), was born on 29 July 1837, the son of Angus Macdonald, 12th of Glenaladale (1793-1870) and Mary Agnes Watson (d.1890). He was educated at Ushaw School, Durham and then began a military career, gaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 3rd (Inverness Militia) Battalion, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1897, and also served as Deputy Lieutenant of Inverness-shire, Justice of the Peace for Argyllshire and Justice of the Peace for Inverness-shire.

He married twice: Helen Mary Chaloner, on 30 July 1862 and Margaret Mary Teresa Blount, daughter of Sir Edward Blount, 8th Baronet, on 13 August 1901. He died on 23 February 1916 at age 78, without issue.

Names of creators: Rev. Archibald Clerk (1813-1887), minister of Kilmallie

Administrative history: Rev. Archibald Clerk was born at Glen Lonach, near Oban on 26 May 1813, son of Duncan Clerk and his wife Margaret Clerk nee Carmichael (d. 1929). He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Cupar in 1835, after which he became assistant ot the minister at St Columba’s in Glasgow. He was ordained to his first charge at Acharacle in 1838, translated to Durinish in Skye in 1840 and to Ardnamurchan in 1841. In 1844, he became minister at Kilmallie, where he remained until his death on 7 February 1887. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Glasgow in 1872. He married Jessie Macleod (1814-1897) on 13 August 1840, and they couple had 11 children.

Administrative history: The 100th (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot was granted Royal Warrant on 10 February 1794, and first paraded on 24 June 1794, the date that this Orderly Book commences. The first five years of the regiment's service were spent on garrison duties at Gibraltar, Corsica and Elba, and they fought in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. In around 1799, they renumbered as the 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, and went on to serve in Holland, Egypt, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, France (including at Waterloo), Jamaica, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, Afghanistan and in the First Anglo-Boer War in South Africa, In 1881, they were amalgamated with the 75th Regiment of Foot to form the Gordon Highlanders.

Names of creators: Sir Ewen Cameron of Fassifern and correspondents

Administrative history: Sir Ewen Cameron of Fassifern, Bart. (1740-1828), was the eldest son of John Cameron of Fassifern ((d. 1785), and the nephew of Donald Cameron of Lochiel, 19th Chief of Clan Cameron. He inherited Fassifern on his father’s death in 1785, having until then lived at Inverscaddle in Ardgour, was curator for his young cousin Donald Cameron of Lochiel, the 22nd Chief of Clan Cameron, and was appointed factor for the Lochiel estates. He married Louisa daughter of Duncan Campbell of Barcaldine, with whom he had three daughters and four sons, one of whom was Colonel John Cameron, killed at the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815. Ewen Cameron was created a Baronet in 1815 and died in 1828.

Names of creators: Ewen Macpherson of Cluny, Donald Cameron of Lochiel, Charles O'Brien, styled 6th Viscount Clare and 9th Earl of Thomond Bishop Robert Forbes, Colonel Humphrey Bland.

Administrative history: Ewen Macpherson of Cluny (1706–1764) was 12th Chief of Clan Macpherson and a Jacobite army officer during the 1745 rising; after living in hiding for 9 years, he went to France where he died.

Donald Cameron of Lochiel (c1700-1748) was 19th Chief of Clan Cameron and a Jacobite leader during the 1745 rising; escaped to France after the failure of the rising, where he died.

Charles O’Brien styled 6th Viscount Clare and 9th Earl of Thomond (1699–1761), was the son of an Irish Jacobite exile and an officer in the French army.

Robert Forbes (bap. 1708, d. 1775), was a Jacobite annalist and Scottish Episcopal bishop of Ross and Caithness and also

compiler of The Lyon in Mourning.

Colonel Humphrey Bland (1685/6–1763), was a British army officer in Scotland during the 1745–6 rising, commanding the cavalry and leading the pursuit immediately after Culloden, and was at the army's Fort Augustus encampment formed that summer. When Cumberland departed Scotland in July 1746, Bland was left in command of one of the four military districts into which that country was then divided, running southwards from Stirling and including Edinburgh.
