Boroondara Mums and Bubs is Australia’s most innovative and fun community for new mums and was established to enable like-minded mums to

get together and engage in fun activities with their little ones and other local parents.

“Being a irst-time mum and new to the local area, I found it really hard in the early stages of parenthood,” says Mayra Ramos, organiser of Boroondara Mums and Bubs. “Having a social, friendly and active group like this really helped. It has helped keep the baby blues away.” According to the National Health and Medical Research Council, post-natal depression afects about 15 per cent of all childbearing women, equating to around 35,000 Australian women afected each year. Social and active community engagement is one of the many ways in which post-natal depression can be prevented and

Having been a dog lover and owner all his life, heading up the Glen Iris Dog Club (GIDC) as its president is a natural progression for Tony

Kenna. Operating the club at a inancially viable level and setting up structures for its daily functioning are among his responsibilities. He also ensures that the aims of promoting efective dog training, at a professional level, are met.

he club currently has 81 members. he membership fees total approximately $110. GIDC covers the cost of insurance and venue hire.

he GIDC accepts dogs at any age and of any breed for training, with the only mandatory criterion dogs must meet is that their vaccinations are current.

Heide authors return to Boroondara Due to popular demand, the authors of Sunday’s Garden: Growing Heide are returning to Boroondara this June. Lesley Harding and Kendrah Morgan are curators at Heide Museum of Modern Art. They will talk about the history of this much-loved museum of modern art and its equally famous garden. Cross the road at the lights, and the trail continues through Australian trees and wetlands. he “drain” on your right is actually Gardiners Creek. You will cross High Street Road (60, J10) and continue past sporting reserves for hockey and rugby. As you approach Warrigal Road, look for the huge old liquidambar tree on your left, which seems out of place. You now “cross” Warrigal Road without stepping onto it. his section was about 3km.

he next section(about 2km) crosses Markham Reserve, and you can easily leave the busy bicycle trail and walk across the grassland. If you do, look out for the point where Gardiners Creek “escapes” its concrete channel to begin a more natural course. A surprise, if you don’t already know about it, is the new playground. his is a good place to take a rest stop, admire the design and count just how many activities there are available in it. here is a toilet here too. Continue along the path until you reach an embankment at the end of Markham Parade (60 D12). Turn right, and it will be obvious you are on the old “Outer Circle” railway easement. Continue north to Alamein station.

You have the choice now to continue beside the railway line along the “Anniversary Trail”, or why not catch the train for two stops to Burwood station? (Curiously, Burwood station is not actually in Burwood.) Leave the train and walk north down to Toorak Road (60, C5), and catch the Vermont South tram back to Burwood Village. By now, you have earned a cofee, a tasty cake, an ice-cream or maybe lunch - yum!

Welcome to this new series of articles in the Bulletin. he areas around Burwood have lots

of walking tracks and cycle paths to explore, and interesting sights to see. hese walks will be short half-day ones, approximately 6km, and may involve public transport for part of the journey. Put on your walking shoes, charge your myki, carry some water and your copy of the Bulletin, dress for the weather on the day and join us for a walk in our local district. Melway map references (in brackets) help you along the way.

Our irst walk starts in Burwood Village. Hop onto the tram going to Vermont South, and travel just three stops to the corner of Elgar Rd (60, K6). Walk across the highway and head downhill into the Local History Park. As you walk this section, look for the site and memories (some with information) of the old cypress trees, Burwood Drive-in, the “orchards”, the geology and the old bridge (more about the last two of these in our next walk). After about 0.5km, you reach Highbury Road.

he people assisted are those who have been identiied by member agencies as having an urgent need. Such need may be the result of experiencing trauma or loss, where people have a need to move or perhaps cannot aford basic living requirements, or where they are struggling to buy essentials such as furniture, other household goods, food and personal hygiene products. Such traumas

include long-term illness, unemployment, loss of home and belongings through ire, domestic violence, lack of family support or homelessness and refugee status. Recipients access the organisation’s warehouse through EERN's member agencies.

Examples of some of the larger items EERN has been able to provide during the past year include beds/mattresses (938), lounge suites/couches (491) and

wardrobes (180). A total of 1915 electrical items were accessed (after being tested and tagged), including TVs (300), washing machines/dryers (203), refrigerators/freezers (116) and microwave ovens (125). In addition, some 728 emergency food parcels were handed out, plus 350 special Christmas hampers.

Where There’s a Need, There’s a WayBy Lavanya Kenneth

Eastern Emergency Relief Network Inc. (EERN) is a charitable organisation serving the municipalities of Boroondara, Knox, Whitehorse, Monash,

Maroondah and Manningham. he organisation was established in October, 1995, at the instigation of local welfare-providing groups (in the City of Whitehorse) in recognition of the need for a central source of second-hand furniture and other household goods for distribution as emergency aid to the less fortunate in our community. Its founder, Keith Rooney, OAM, a former Mayor of Nunawading, on his retirement was awarded the keys to the City in recognition of his contribution to the community.

he organisation is made up of approximately 130 welfare-providing agencies and is run entirely by volunteers; currently, there are about 73 staf. It relies solely on the generosity of donors of household goods and ofers pick-ups (by appointment) for goods in “good condition” in the above municipalities. It is open from 9am to 1pm, Monday to Friday, and two trucks operate daily for pick-ups in the community. It also provides a speaker with a PowerPoint presentation of operations to service clubs, churches, workplaces and schools.


Toddlers become more interested in playing with “things”. See these options at the library – push/pull-along toys, blocks, hammering and sit-and-ride toys, early puzzles, sand and water. hey gradually become a little more secure – playing farther away, but still with you in sight. hey will enjoy talking about play, “more cars”, “big ball”.

By three and four years, children enjoy pretending: that things are something else and that they are someone else – a crocodile, a plane or a ireman! hey will learn sharing and cooperation, to move more conidently – enjoying challenges such as trikes and bikes, playgrounds and ball games.

By ive or six years, play may be directed more towards speciic goals, such as learning to read or to add. Word games, puzzles, and games designed to make learning fun are available in the toy library.

After my daughter and I get home we love to unpack the toys, count the pieces (to make sure they are all there) and start to play with them. It is a great discovery to ind out what she does with the new toys; even better when her older sister gets home from school

and they do their best to share them!

Box Hill Toy Library is open Mondays for two

sessions: morning 9.30–10.30 and evening 7.30–

8.30. Membership starts from $55, you can borrow

four toys per fortnight. We welcome donations of

preloved toys in good condition – even if parts are

missing, as we might need the other parts to ix one of

our toys that has missing pieces.

Every week or so my two and a half-year-old daughter and I enjoy a trip to our local Box Hill Area Toy Library. he anticipation is great: “Can I get the doll or the homas toy?”

she asks me. Once we get there she takes of and tries out some toys that are ready and waiting for her. I might be helping that day, which means I help the other members return toys, ready for the next child. When I am on duty I can pick a great toy because someone tells me what fun they had with the ride-on or with a puzzle of a boy (3 layers, with lungs and skeleton!).

Why is play important? It is often said that play is a child’s work, and helps them to: Develop physical skills as they learn to reach,

grasp, crawl, run, climb and balance; Learn to solve problems, developing memory

skills and attention span enabling progress to higher levels of thought as they play in a more stimulating environment; Develop language skills as they play and

interact with others, beginning with parents playing cooing games and advancing to the telling of stories and jokes; Learn to cooperate, negotiate, take turns and

play by the rules.Toys are the “work” tools that help the child play.

Toy libraries have diferent sections, with toys arranged according to age and interests.

Young babies respond actively to people - their faces and voices. Later they like objects to shake, drop, suck, bang, roll and crawl after. Our library has a variety of activity toys (with buttons and shapes).

The Burwood Village Traders Association is proud to host the annual Burwood Village Autumn Festival. his year it was held on

Sunday, 5 May, and many neighbouring groups, schools and sporting clubs joined with the traders to celebrate our community. he day was a great success – full of fun and festivities, with fantastic acts on the entertainment stage, rides, an animal farm, face painting, autumn art, plaster painting, and many more activities to keep everyone entertained!

he street was colourfully decorated to create an amazing autumn wonderland. Scores of yellow and brown balloons were scattered throughout the streets. Amongst a number of new activities we saw the talents of amazing craft experts, Craft T’arts. Experts in yarn bombing, these artists decorated a number of trees – wrapping them with their own winter woollies. What is yarn bombing? Like yarn storming, guerrilla knitting,

urban knitting or graiti knitting, it is a type of graiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or ibre rather than paint or chalk. While yarn installations may last for years, they are considered non-permanent, and (unlike other forms of graiti) can be easily removed if necessary. If you’re quick, you can see the eforts of the Craft T’arts on the corner of Myrniong Street and Toorak Road.

Another of the festival highlights is the quality of the stage entertainment. he Master of Ceremonies, Nick huys, said “It was a remarkable day; the acts were amazing! I couldn’t believe the voices of some of the singers, and the dancers were impressive too! Our stage sponsor, Crazy Feet Dance Studio, stole the show with their energetic performance and the Boroondara Symphonic Band were a joy with one little girl having the chance of a lifetime to conduct the orchestra.”

As for the activities and “things to do on the day” – where to begin? Of the local community groups, Alamein House had their mini golf set up and the scouts had a choc-o-toss game. he Traders Association had a jelly bean guessing

competition, with one winner guessing correctly: there were 1125 beans in the jar. he Burwood Neighbourhood House face-painting artists were popular with the kids and the rides and the animal farm were a big hit, as was Jake the Tram Tracker dog with loads of giveaways.

he Peppermill had a cake-decorating display that gave many locals helpful tips on how to make their cakes look amazing. Food was abundant, with Blue Galangal selling some yummy hai satay sticks. Harvest Blend had a gourmet selection of meals from all over the world. he local scouts paired up with Burwood Village Gourmet Meats for a delectable sausage sizzle, and Wattle Park Primary sold their home-made cakes and other baked goods.

he festival was an absolute sensation and the Burwood Village Traders Association, would like to thank everyone who was involved in celebrating our community and making the day unforgettable.


Deaf, Blind and Now Able

A new W-class heritage tram has been donated to Wattle Park by the Victorian Government to

replace the one that was destroyed by vandals in 2011. Parks Victoria staf worked with VicTrack, the custodial owners of heritage trams, to ind a suitable replacement.

Mr Ryan Smith, Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, and Mr Graham Watt, Member for Burwood, together oicially installed the tram on hursday, 14 March this year. “Kids of all ages from four to forty will be rapt that the tram has come to the park just in time for the Easter school holidays,” said Mr Watt.

Other oicials in attendance included Chris Hardman, Melbourne Regional Director, and Andrew Fairley, Board Chairman, both from Parks Victoria, and members of the Wattle Park Heritage Group and Friends of Wattle Park.

he extensive restoration of the tram was undertaken by the Bendigo Tramways Trust. Mr David Collins, the

ranger in charge of Wattle Park, said the tram had its “wheels and ittings removed, a new steel interior itted and was given a fresh coat of paint” to ensure it has a long life within the park.

Wattle Park is a very appropriate location for the tram to be displayed because of its strong historical connection with trams. It was originally bequeathed to the Tramways Trust in 1917 and went on to be managed by a series of tramway bodies before being handed on to Melbourne Parks and Waterways and then to Parks Victoria.

information sessions and shopping – together with special activities, such as attending a three-day Deafblind Camp, which for some is the only time they are able to get away during the year as they require professional assistance to enjoy a holiday.

Able Australia, formerly known as the Deafblind Association, has been supporting people with deafblindness since the

early 1960s. he organisation is now supporting people in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and Queensland, not only with deafblindness, but also people with multiple disabilities and those in community support programs.

In Australia today there are over 332,000 deafblind people, and this number is expected to increase to 1.5 million by 2050 owing to an ageing population (Access Economics Report).

Some services that Able Australia provides are locally based in Camberwell, Box Hill, Mitcham and Waverley; they include accommodation, day services and therapy programs. Music and art therapy are important creative outlets, as people work with trained therapists to develop their creativity and enjoy their experience. he art program culminates in the Ableart exhibition held each May in he Atrium, Federation Square, with the assistance of the Herbert Smith Freehills funding and Federation Square Community Support Program. he artists involved in the program can sell their work during the exhibition and all proceeds are given back to them for their own use.

Evan: I believe one of your poems, called “Coo-eee”, was translated into a song and is currently in the National Archives in Canberra.

Howard: I have written 600 poems. Some of these I have turned into songs and ballads. I have written 100 poems with a country accent like the country cockies – how they talk in Australian slang – something like C. J. Dennis.

Evan: So your poems are about Australian life and the outback?

Howard: Yes, yes. I have written poems that are comical ones, sensible ones, about the Koori people, about the war (World War II) – what the Diggers went through and how they reacted, and all that. [I can’t really talk] about the war because I was too young. I was only 15 when the war ended in 1945. I was too young to be in the war, but I was too old to be in the call-up. We had the National Service in 1949, but they only wanted to take 18-year-olds. And I was 19, so I was too old for that. So I missed out on army service altogether!

Story Goes on for Stroke SurvivorHoward Reede-Pelling is one of those people with such a varied life – illed with both interest and setbacks – that it is diicult to know what to talk about irst. Evan Papamichael spoke to him, and here is just part of their wide-ranging interview – starting, unusually, with a setback that Howard has turned into a positive outcome.

Evan: Can you please tell me a bit about your stroke? Is that diicult to talk about?

Howard: No, no, there’s a lot of talking about strokes. I actually have been in the Boroondara Stroke Group for 10 years. We meet every second hursday. And I am now an Ambassador for it. he Stroke Group has a Quarterly Newsletter and in it I have contributed to encourage people who have had a stroke how to live life; how to live with a stroke.

Evan: And how do you encourage them? What do you say to them?

Howard: I just tell them what they are capable of. hey know their own abilities and I encourage them to do other things. I have done more since I had the stroke than before it. I go and have lunch every now and again at Asburton Support Services up there in High Street.

I have won seven pendants with Lawn Bowls. Two people have had a stroke at the club where I play. One of them had a severe stroke and he can hardly do anything. Another lady a couple of days later had a stroke. It was not quite so severe. She is back bowling again. hese things happen, you know?

Evan: Where does the Stroke Association meet?Howard: he Stroke Association was near the

Hawthorn Town Hall, but the Town Hall is being rebuilt. Now we are in St George’s Hospital in Kew at Cotham Road. We have a room there, which we are allowed to use until our old place is ready again.

Evan: You are in a program called PADSIP. What does this mean?

Howard: It means Positive Ageing Digital Storytelling Inter-generational Project. It is where we older folk mix in with 14 to 16 year-old students, and each year we make a DVD of our life stories. It’s about how the young react to older people, and how old people react to the younger people. We’ve got a $50,000 grant from the government for Hawthorn Secondary College to carry it on. I enjoy it.

Evan: You have written 40 books and self-published 18 of these.

Howard: I have written most of the books since I had the stroke. I started when I was 19, writing a book called he Little Bush Imp. I did not inish until 1998. Since then I have written 39 other books, including my life story.

Integrated Cancer ServiceWhy talk about cancer?An estimated 120,710 cases of cancer were diagnosed

in Australia in 2012 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare). hose most commonly diagnosed in Australia are prostate, bowel, breast, lung and melanoma. he risk of being diagnosed with cancer before the age of 75 is estimated to be one in three for males and one in four for females, and this increases with age. Sadly, as we get older, most of us will have personal experience of cancer through either our own diagnosis or that of a friend or loved one.

he importance of cancer services and supportBeing diagnosed with cancer can be confronting,

overwhelming and confusing, to both the individual and their family and friends. A cancer diagnosis may contribute to inancial diiculties, psychological and relationship problems, and practical problems relating to work and home life, child care and transport. Evidence shows that people who receive information and help with psychological and social issues demonstrate lower rates of anxiety, mood disorders, nausea, vomiting and pain. hey also demonstrate signiicantly greater knowledge of their disease and its treatment. Unfortunately, for many people, the trauma of a cancer diagnosis is exacerbated by diiculties in obtaining reliable information and a lack of supportive care.

What are we doing?he North Eastern Melbourne Integrated Cancer

Service (NEMICS) is one of nine integrated cancer services established by the Victorian Government with the aim of improving cancer service delivery to Victorians. In an efort to increase community awareness of the range of support and services available in the region, and how they can be accessed, NEMICS, in consultation with its consumer group, has established the Community Ambassador Program. NEMICS has recruited a group of volunteers, all of whom have personal experience of cancer, to provide a 30-minute presentation on request to community groups throughout the NEMICS region. he region includes the municipalities of Whittlesea in the north, Yarra Ranges in the east, Whitehorse and Knox in the south and Darebin and part of Boroondara in the west.

On Saturday, 6 April, some of the

original students of Burwood High School met at the Box Hill Golf Club for a reunion. It was a successful event with a few of the former students and their partners travelling long distances to attend the get-together. John Griith, now in his eighties, was the only teacher to attend. He started teaching at Burwood High School when it opened in 1955 and left at the end of 1966.

When the school opened the students had classes in the Nissen huts which were opposite the Ashburton Railway Station. his was because the new school being built on the Burwood Highway was not yet inished. he school closed in 1987 and was taken over by the Deakin University.

celebrating the school’s 60th anniversary in March 2015.

National Youth Week (NYW), held from 5 to 14 April,

gave people aged 12 to 25 the opportunity to share ideas,

attend events, express their

views on issues of concern to

them, showcase their talents and

celebrate their contribution to

celebration of young people in

Australia. This year’s NYW was

based around the theme “Be

Active, Be Happy, Be You”.

4.15pm, a song by Melbourne

musician Chris O’Neill entitled “If

You Were Here”. This was for the

“Same Song, Same Time” project,

organised by the Community

Broadcasting Association of Victoria.

some of Boroondara’s historic churches. An authority on church history, architecture and music will lead the tour.

Not all activities organised by CHS are just focused on the local area. Many events provide a broader public interest. A recent example was a lecture delivered last year by David Baillieu, brother of former Victorian premier, the Hon. Ted Baillieu, on the Baillieu family ancestry. his event attracted over 100 people and was one of CHS’s most successful. In April this year, guest lecturer Lambis Englezos spoke on Australia’s involvement in the tragic battle of Fromelles in France in 1916. his example demonstrates the ability of CHS to provide events including content of national - even international - historical signiicance.

Another key function of CHS is to catalogue and maintain a collection of historical information. President George Fernando is pleased that Boroondara City Council has recently enabled CHS to expand their capacity to house this information, saying, “We are now in the process of properly cataloguing the materials that we have and storing them in the council space”.

In addition to assisting all manner of people who contact CHS for information, the president says that with the new space they are now in a position to appeal to the public to share local history knowledge with CHS. “For our collection to build up so we can help others, we need the public to step forward and give us information on their homes, their streets, their localities, photographs, letters, and diaries. We will be happy to get copies from them and add them to our collection”.

streets, houses, shops and buildings were planned? How the streets were named and how the earliest European settlers made a living? If so, you might be interested in the events run by your local historical society. here are many such societies in existence; Camberwell Historical Society (CHS) is one of ive societies in the city of Boroondara alone.

CHS is celebrating 50 years of fostering historical interest in the community. he anniversary is planned to be celebrated at a dinner with guest speaker Geofrey Blainey, who wrote A History of Camberwell in 1964. here will also be a commemorative tree-planting in the Read Gardens in Camberwell. his longevity is testimony to the volunteers who run the society and plan very interesting lectures, discussions and excursions throughout the year that are open to members and non-members alike.

Last year, historian Dr Gary Presland presented a lecture about the natural environment of the Boroondara area as it existed prior to European settlement. He discussed how the waterways have since been altered as the area has developed. In a separate event, former Governor of Victoria Dr David de Kretser spoke about his childhood experience growing up in Boroondara, recalling a time before there was electricity, and when it

a diferent city with a diferent theme. This year’s World

Environment Day is being hosted in Mongolia and the

theme is “Think. Eat. Save”. World Environment Day is

similar to Earth Day.

international Suring day: Will be held on 20 June

this year. This is an unoicial sport-based holiday that

celebrates the sport of suring and the sustainability of

ocean resources. Contests and prizes are often part of

the celebration, but most importantly, surfers will take

the opportunity to give back to the ocean by organising

clean-ups, restoration projects and fundraising.

Bowl a Ball: Ashburton Bowling Club recently held an open afternoon for the community to try out the sport. It seemed to go quite well with the sausage sizzle, hamburgers, espresso cofee and everything else. All I can say is that the atmosphere was welcoming, and I hope they did very well and gained some new members.

Ashburton Primary School Fair: Your scribe was rather disappointed this year as I could not ind my favorite jellies, crab apple or plain apple, nor could I buy a hamburger an hour before the fair was due to inish. hese were not severe shortcomings, and I must say that I was impressed by the changes to the school grounds, which are not inished yet.

Changes at Belinda Jane’s: his shop is about to turn part of the premises into an end-of-line sales outlet; the rest of the shop will stay the same, and will on both sides still serve us well. I wish them well with this new venture.

Two Seeds: Until their weekday chef returns from overseas, Two Seeds will be serving all day breakfast only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

he Ashburton FestivalOur festival this year took place on Sunday, 5 February. Unfortunately, the day was rather warmer than one would have preferred for optimal enjoyment by all members of the community. here were some ine strolling players who added colour and a lovely element to the soundscape. It was pleasing, too, to see more of our traders taking part. he turnout of sporting clubs also was good. he cake stalls were colourful, though only one had separate cupcakes and neither ofered smaller cakes for sale. Our cafés did their thing nobly and there were a number of barbecues to feed the mob. he one thing I was looking forward to was the Pop-up Afghan Café, which I somehow managed to miss – much to my annoyance. Coles contributed to the community as well, promoting their new bakery products.

CARINE TREFOIL GUILDWe are a small group of women who have been connected with Girl Guides in

the past, either as leaders or members. We meet bi-monthly on the 2nd Monday at 1pm at

Just get of the train and there you are entering Alamein Men’s Shed in the old station master’s oices at Alamein Station.

he shed has been running for seven years, but has only just moved to the station. It allows a wider variety of opening times and many diferent programs. Men can come along with their own projects, or participate in ours. Some of these include making hobby horses for kindergartens, building garden beds for community gardens, making toys for children and much more.

Currently the Men’s Shed is running on Tuesday and hursday from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Women too, get a look in at the shed: Alamein Neighbourhood and Learning Centre also ofers Women’s Home Maintenance courses in the shed facilities. hese courses ofer hands-on advice on how to use tools around the home. he facilitator of the program, Phil Dowles, will tailor the course according to participants’ needs.

John Barton has created and developed an alternative and revolutionary method of teaching music. Ideal for students of all ages, from six to 86

its innovative and highly enjoyable approach to learning piano and keyboard is an Australian success story. he teaching system is called Music Logic and is fast gaining recognition as one of the most successful piano teaching methods to have been developed this century. Since starting in 1985 John has trained teachers in Australia, New Zealand and USA.

For far too long, learning piano has been regarded a long and arduous process. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
