    Introduction toAuditory Discrimination and Listening Skills

    Learning how to listen and discern what is heard are essential skills for everyday living. Research tells us that listening skills can be greatly improved when these skills are practiced. The activities included in the auditory discrimination and listening skills section will help children learn to pay better attention when they are listening and they will be able to better understand what they have heard.

    LISTEN CAREFULLYThe teacher should tell the children to close their eyes and to be very quiet. Then quietly walk around

    the children, tap one child on the shoulder, and whisper a request in that childs ear, such as say a nursery rhyme or sing a song. That child then performs the request. When the child is finished, the other children open their eyes and guess who was talking.

    WHAT DOES NOT BELONG?The children are instructed to listen very carefully as the teacher tells a familiar story. The teacher

    tells the story, but mixes up or changes some very important details, such as The Three Little Pigs, who built houses made from straw, sticks, and construction paper; or, The Three Bears and the boy named Goldhat, who snuck into the Bears home and ate all the scrambled eggs. The children are to raise their hands whenever they hear something that does not belong in the original version of the story. This game will quickly become a favorite of the children.
