Passage: ! ings in Stores
We buy many things in stores. We buy books. We like to read books. We buy candy. Candy is sweet. We buy toys. It is fun to play with toys. We buy things in many colors. Some things are red. Some are yellow. Some are blue. When we look at pretty colors, we feel happy.
We go to the store with our families. Our parents buy things for us. They work hard so they can buy things for us. Our parents want us to have good things to eat. They want us to read and have fun.
It is fun to go to stores. We can buy things we like. These things make us feel good.

Passage: Tom Green the Frog
A long time ago, there was a frog. He was small and green. His name was Tom Green.
Tom Green, the frog, lived in a lake. He liked to hop up and down. He liked to swim.
He was different from the other animals. They made fun of him. The frog was sad.
One day, a beautiful lady came to the lake. She felt bad for the sad frog. The lady gave him a kiss. Tom Green, the frog, turned into a nice man!
From then on, Tom Green had a new life! The beautiful lady was his friend. He made many new friends. Tom Green was happy!

Passage: Playing Ball
There are many games or sports that use balls. In soccer, the team kicks and hits the ball. The team tries to keep the ball away from the other team. The team scores by getting the ball into a goal.
In bowling, the player rolls a heavy ball down the lane. The ball knocks down the pins at the end of the lane. It’s good to knock down all the pins.
It’s also fun to play football. A football is not round and sometimes is hard to hold. To score points, players throw the ball and run fast. Sometimes they kick the ball.
Basketball is another good game. A basketball player has to put the ball into a hoop. The hoop is way up high and hard to hit.

Passage: Trains: Past and Present
Trains are part of our past. Look at the picture of the old train. This train ran about 200 years ago. Steam made it move. You can see steam when water gets hot and boils. This train was not very fast. Two hundred years ago, trains did not go as fast as a horse.
Today, many trains use electricity to move. They are very fast. Some fast trains in Japan are called “bullet trains.” If you ride a bullet train, you can go 100 miles in about 20 minutes.
Trains are important because they move people and things from place to place. Trains move things that we eat, wear, and use at home and at school.

Passage: People and Lions
People and lions are alike in some ways. They both breathe air. They have skin and bones. They live with their families and take care of their young.
In other ways, people and lions are different. People walk on two legs, but lions move on four legs. Lions are large, strong animals. Compared to lions, people are small and weak. Lions roar and growl, while people talk, laugh, and sing.
People live all over the world, but most lions make their homes in the grasslands of Africa. Lions hunt other animals to get their food. People get their food from plants. People also get food from animals, but most people do not hunt for their food now. Most of us buy our food in stores.

Passage: A Letter from My Pen Pal
My name is Mara. I am in second grade in Miami, Florida. I wanted a pen pal so I could learn how people live in different countries. My new pen pal lives in Canada. Canada is the country just north of the United States. Here is my fi rst letter from him.
Dear Mara,
My name is Tim. I live in British Columbia, Canada. The fl ag of Canada has a red maple leaf. British Columbia is a beautiful place with mountains, trees, and water. British Columbia is known for totem poles. They are made of wood, and some parts look like animals.
I like to do things outside with my family. In the summer, we swim and go fi shing in the lakes. In the winter, we ski on the mountains. In the spring and the fall, we take long walks in the woods together. We see pretty birds and deer in the woods. The deer run quickly.
We speak English in this part of Canada. In other parts of Canada, people speak French.
I want to learn about all Miami, Florida. Do you go to the beach everyday? I hope you will write back soon.
Your pen pal,
Tim
