The College will, of course, try to render help in locating suitable accommodation for married students and their offspring, but it is to be stressed that the situation is more difficult than for a single person and the ultimate responsibility lies with the student concerned.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIESMany students may need to supplement their expenses while they study and SCL authorities do their best to help them find jobs.

The majority of students who enter the UK for longer than six months usually receive restricted permission to work during their studies. If you have any of the following three forms of

Prospectus Page 8 of 15

authorisation written on the ‘Leave to Remain’ (visa) stamp in your passport, you have this standard restriction on working. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week in term-time and full-time in vacations.

HEALTH CAREUnder the National Health Service (NHS), students studying in the UK for more than six months must register with a General Practitioner (GP) in the area where they live. Students will receive NHS cards on registration and will be able to consult a GP free of charge. If a student is not registered, they may have problem seeing a doctor when medical treatment becomes necessary.

If you are from an EU country with a reciprocal health agreement with the UK, you can receive free treatment regardless of the length of your course.

ACCOMMODATIONGiven that the majority of our full time students come from outside of the UK and European Union, we recognise how important it is for the College to help students to find suitable accommodation. Our student welfare office is dedicated to this task.

Finding suitable accommodation while you study at SCL is relatively easy. Both extensive and competitively priced accommodation can be arranged for the student on request. All accommodation will be provided in self catered houses, flats and maisonettes. There is a range of private housing and family accommodation in the East London area surrounding the campus. If you would prefer any of these accommodations, the College can help you find a suitable place by providing you with guidance notes and up to date listings of available properties.

LIVING COSTThe cost of living obviously depends on the lifestyle you choose to have. Typically, however, students need £9,600 to cover food, accommodation, travel, books, etc for a full year (52 weeks), to which should be added about £2,000 for each dependent. Please contact the College information desk at our opening hours if you need further information or help in this matter.

STUDENT SUPPORTCareers Advice Apart from giving general and individual advice, the student welfare officer can give extra help to prepare your CV and improve your application and interview techniques. We have a large computer suite and library facility which you can use for collecting information.

Counseling and AdviceThe welfare service provides you with the opportunity to receive help with any problems you may be experiencing. If you feel lonely, homesick, anxious, depressed, stressed or experience problem with your studies, come and see us. We will try to help you on any of these problems.

The welfare service provides a comprehensive service to all students and offers information, help and advice on a wide range of different subjects including external problems involving welfare rights, financial difficulties, legal questions, Home Office related issues, and also with the College's procedures and regulations. We have established many contacts with outside agencies so that, where necessary, specialist referrals can be made.

English Language SupportAll tuition and examinations at the College are in English, so a sound command of English language is essential to succeed in your course of study. The English that you use in higher education can sometimes be very different to the English that you have learnt at your previous educational institutions. You need to be able to cope with reading, note-taking from lectures, books, journals and other materials, and be able to participate meaningfully in classroom discussions.

TEACHING TIMETABLES All full time students are expected to attend daytime classes for a minimum of 15 hours per week from 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Timetables and classroom information will be displayed on notice boards. Course start and end dates will be communicated to students. The College reserves the right to alter dates in order to facilitate or improve the provision of the course and its examinations. Any such changes will not affect the College regulations.

ATTENDANCE POLICYStudents are required to attend all lectures. Students’ attendance will be monitored regularly. There will be a ‘Student Attendance Register’ for students to sign in for each class which allows the College to keep a record of student attendance for various reasons. Students should do this every time they attend a lecture. It is student’s responsibility to make sure their attendance is logged. If it is not, a student may not be allowed to sit for examinations and student may be withdrawn from the programme.

All students are expected to attend their Scheduled classes. The College requires students to have at least 80% attendance for them to be entered for examinations. Valid reasons should be shown for non-attendance. This requirement is mandatory for International students in order to qualify UK Border Agency (UKBA) regulations and entry to examinations.

In case of an illness, student’s absence can be marked as ‘Authorised Absence’ subject to the production of a medical certificate or an acceptable explanation for the absence. This will however not change the actual status of the student i.e. the student will still be counted absent.

If a student is absent for 3 expected contact points (or attendance drops below 90%) without prior approval, the student will be contacted by methods like telephone, email, text messaging and letter by post to address regarding their absence (First Warning Letter). The student will be contacted by telephone, email and letter and if the student fails to respond to the First Warning Letter and if the student consecutively misses 6 expected contact points or when the attendance drops below 85% a Second Warning Letter will be issued. If the student misses 10 expected points of contact and fails to respond to the letters or if the attendance drops below 80% an Expulsion Letter will be issued and sent it by recorded delivery.
