The Paulist Fathers have been faithfully serving the students, faculty, and staff at UT
since 1908. In extending an invitation to the Paulists to serve the UT community
Bishop Gallagher, the Bishop of Galveston in 1908, wrote, my main and particular
object is that your Fathers may exercise a special care and supervision over a very
choice portion of our people, the Catholic young men and women who are students in
the State University.
We will celebrate our Centennial throughout 2008 with receptions, a Lenten Workshop
a special Day of Service, and a Gala to culminate the celebration on Saturday, November
1, 2008. Help us kick off the Anniversary year in style on Friday, January 25, 2008, a
7:00 PM with a reception and show at the University Catholic Center.
Join us for a night of fun and fellowship at the UCC as Sister Nancy Murray, OP
presents a one-act play about the life of St. Catherine of Siena. The biological sister of
comedian Bill Murray, Sr. Nancy is making her mark on audiences across the country
and throughout the world, bringing to life Catherine of Siena, a Dominican Saint
and Doctor of the Church. With simple props and a fertile imagination, Sister Nancy
portrays Catherine as the colorful, strong, passionate and enthusiastic personality tha
she was.
This event is free and open to the public, so please invite family and friends to join us
as well. It will be a wonderful opportunity for all who love the UCC to gather as we
begin to celebrate 100 years of Catholic ministry at UT. Hot cocoa, coffee, and desserts
will be served.
Catholic Campus Ministry at The University of

A M E S S A G E
from the Director...During Thanksgiving week, my mom traveled from
Rhode Island to make one of her semi-annual
visits to Austin. She likes to visit her favorite son
at Thanksgiving (my four siblings may contest my
use of that particular adjective!). Mom enjoys the
often pleasant November weather in Texas, and her conversations with the other
Paulist priests in the rectory, and shopping trips to the SAS shoe factory outlet in
San Antonio. One thing I enjoy about Mom is her capacity to express gratitude for
blessings received. We have a lot to learn from our mothers.
During this season of giving thanks, I am grateful for the thousands of students
who walk through the UCC doors each week to pause for prayer, attend a group
activity, or talk about their faith journey with one of the campus ministers. I am
grateful for a staff that is so dedicated to their work, whose hearts are on re
with the love of Jesus Christ and who freely share that passion with so many. I
am grateful for Bishop Gregory Aymond and his unwavering support of Catholic
campus ministry in the Diocese of Austin. I am grateful for parents of Longhorn
students who take an active interest in their childrens faith lives, encouraging
them to be committed participants in the Catholic faith. I am grateful to UTalumni who freely share their stories and good memories of the old days at the
UCC. I am grateful to you, my partners in ministry, supporting the mission of the
University Catholic Center. May you have a blessed and happy Advent!

Committing to Lives of Stewardship
As Catholics, we hear the word stewardship often. We have
probably heard many priests talk about giving of time, talent, and treasure to build up the Kingdom of God. But what doesit really mean to be a good steward of the gifts weve received?
According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in theirPastoral Letter on Stewardship, a Christian steward is one
who receives Gods gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends themin a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in
justice and love with others, and returns them with increaseto the Lord.
At the University Catholic Center, we strive daily to instilla culture of stewardship into the hearts and minds of the
students who walk through our doors. After all, the conceptof stewardship is biblical. In 1 Peter 4:10, we read, As each
one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good
stewards of Gods varied grace.
In order to sustain and grow the ministry of the UniversityCatholic Center, a commitment to stewardship by alumni,
parents, and friends of the UCC is integral. But what aboutour students? Yes, its true that most college students dont
have much disposable income. However, that doesnt meanthey are off the hook when it comes to supporting the
University Catholic Center.
Stewardship Corner...offering gifts of time, talent & treasure
In the past year, the UCC has seen an unprecedented
commitment to stewardship among the students who comehere to worship, receive the sacraments, study, and hangout. We thank them for being shining examples of Christian
stewardship!
From the UCCs rst Phonathon last spring to our rst Rafe
(currently underway), our students have risen to the occasion
to support the UCCs fundraising efforts. Additionally, eachyear for the last ve years, students have organized a Date
Auction to benet the UCC. The 2007 Date Auction raised
more than $7,000, which was used in part to purchase aportable sound system to be used for the Awakening and
STRONG retreat programs.
Last, but certainly not least, the UCC just held its thirdsuccessful Matching Gift Sunday. Four very generous
benefactors committed to giving $15,500 to match the Sunday
collection on November 11th. The total in the collection platethat Sunday was $15,940, and much of that was from students
digging deep to give a gift they knew would be doubled.
A huge thank you to all who give of their time, talent, andtreasure to the UCC, and a special thank you to our students
who are already living lives as committed stewards of the giftstheyve received! Each of you is instrumental in making theUniversity Catholic Center the vibrant ministry it is today.

Throughout Respect Life Month in October, the University
Catholic Centers pro-life group, Catholic Longhorns for Life
(CLFL), led the way in offering activities for the UCC community.Over the course of four weeks, CLFL created four large dis-
plays that addressed specic aspects of the pro-life position. These
displays were prominent in the UCC atrium to allow passersby to
learn more about Catholic pro-life teachings. The emphasis of the
displays centered on abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, stem
cell research, Planned Parenthood, contraception, Natural Family
Planning, and eugenics.
Aside from these displays, Catholic Longhorns for Life further
engaged in pro-life activity during October by promoting and view-
ing the critically acclaimed movie Bella, as well as co-hosting
a lecture called Executing the Insane, the Case of Scott Panetti,
delivered by Kristin Houl.
Finally, CLFL organized the Baby Bank collection. Proceedsof this collection assist with helping expectant mothers, particularly
those with unplanned pregnancies. CLFL hopes to continue its min-
istry to spread the message of life through creating and participating
in opportunities that promote Catholic pro-life teachings.
Current president of Catholic Longhorns for Life, Marynia
Demkowicz, said, Respect life month was a great opportunity for
the members of CLFL to educate themselves about current life is-
sues and, by doing so, also teach the community at large.
On a beautiful October weekend, students from the UniversityCatholic Center gathered with Fr. Dave Farnum, C.S.P. and MichelleGoodwin for the Next Step retreat. This three-day retreat focusedon discerning lifes big questions, such as: Should I change my major?or Do I have a religious calling? or Is this the right relationship forme? The retreat was designed to help students examine the top-ics of discernment and Gods unique callin each of our lives. The retreat featuredmorning and evening prayer, small groupdiscussions, peer-to-peer mentoring, and apanel of guest speakers who shared theirown discernment stories. The panelistsgave reections on their own lives and on
the special way God has led them to thelife they now lead. Panelists included Sr.Shel Balek, a Franciscan nun, Br. Matt Mc-Kenna, a Holy Cross Brother, Patty Collier,Deacon Ray Sanders and his wife Joanne, and Fr. Dave.
Our resident community added a specialtouch to the weekend by providing home-cooked meals for the re-treatants. They were delighted to hear that some of our cooks metat Longhorn Awakening #7, dated and married at the UCC, and havebeen a part of the Center for years. A special thank you goes out to
our resident community members who shared their time and talentwith us during the Next Step retreat.
The core of the UCC Next Step discernment retreat is groundedin the understanding that discernment is something all Christiansare called to do. Faced with questions of marriage and religious lifestudents also must make decisions about what to study, what career
path to pursue, and what family will looklike in their adult years. As a result of ourbaptism, in faith, we believe God must be apart of these decisions.
Mollie Alred, a Junior majoring in Music/Public Relations, had this to say about
the retreat: What a blessing it was! I wassurprised because it was something totallydifferent from what Ive experienced. Ivenever dealt with this topic so directly. It letme know there truly are people who livethe life God planned for them.
Taryne Hallett, a Doctoral Candidate inLinguistics, summed it up by saying, This retreat was helpful to mebecause it gave me quiet time to get away from cell phones, internetand chores so that I could listen to God and my heart.

UCC LAUNCHES CATHOLICISM 101You learned everything that you ever needed to know about your
Catholic faith while taking CCD classes in elementary and middle
school, right? We didnt think so. The same is true of many Catholics
including some of the students at The University of Texas. To help
our students grow intellectually in their faith, the University Catholic
Center launched Catholicism 101 this semester, a multi-course series
designed to give students the basics of the faith, explained and discussed
on a college-level. The instructors include the University Catholic
Center campus ministers and Vanessa Gonzalez, a volunteer who holds
a B.A. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame.Catholicism 101 began this semester with a comprehensive look a
The Faith Professedthe Creed and the tenets of faith behind those
words. In future semesters, the curriculum will expand to include The
Faith Celebratedstudying the sacraments, The Faith Prayers
diving into the meaning of prayers and how to experience prayer, and
The Faith Liveda look at what it means to truly live as followers o
Christ.

SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE PREPARING COUPLES
A romantic meal, tango dancing, marathon dialogue, teeth-
ossing, laughter and tearsall happened during the Uni-
versity Catholic Centers November 2-3
Marriage Preparation Workshop. Married
couples from the UCC resident community
shared their stories about communication,
families of origin, intimacy, natural fam-
ily planning and children, nancial and le-
gal issues, spirituality, and surviving to the
60th wedding anniversary, and beyond.
Coordinators Dorothy and Deacon John De
La Garza (married for 41 years) credited
the weekends success to generous contri-
butions of time, wisdom, and food. The
young couples experience began with a
candlelit dinner served in the UCC Atrium
by married couple volunteers. As enter-
tainment, one couple in their mid-sixties
demonstrated how tango dancing had rein-
vigorated their marital bond. In a later session, the engaged
couples were asked to oss their ancs teeth. This playfulexercise introduced the presentation about physical, intel-
lectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of intimacy.
UCC Director Fr. Dave Farnum, C.S.P. added his bless-
ing and words of wisdom to the wedding-bound group. In
his ministry, he has counseled hundreds of young people
evaluating their relationships. In fact, many workshop par
ticipants are referred by him, Associate Director Fr. Ed Ko-
harchik, C.S.P., and Campus Minister Michelle GoodwinThe workshop is offered each fall and spring semester. Its
relatively low cost for materials and three meals has made
the UCC event a popular choice for couples throughout the
Austin Diocese.
The recent group included couples planning
weddings abroad in Java, Grand Cayman, Costa
Rica, Mexico, and India as well as closer to home
in San Diego and San Jose, California, and in
Houston, San Antonio, Del Rio and Austin. Oneyoung man actually communicated throughou
the workshop via web with his anc in Kerala
state, India. A Eucharistic celebration led by
Father John Payne, S. J., concluded the week-
end along with presentation of certicates. The
spring workshop is March 28-29, 2008.
