Page 2: MacEwan University Sport & Wellness Winter 2013 programs

This winter, we are expanding our line of intramurals and recreation programs (see pages 14-15 for more information) to include a Give it a Try-athlon. If you have never done one before, this is a great way to get introduced to the sport of triathlon. You’ll also want to make sure you drop by to watch our Griffins in action (game schedule available at www.MacEwan.ca/Griffins). Griffins and Sport and Wellness apparel is also available for purchase at our access desk. I challenge each of you, if you have not made fitness and wellness a part of your everyday life, then make today the day you start. And tell a friend, or share the opportunity with your place of work – we have fantastic corporate deals (page 6). Your job is getting here, our job is helping you find the right fit with our wide assortment of programs and services. As an added bonus, all new members* can enter their name into a grand prize draw for a yearly membership for two, personal training sessions for two and towel and locker rentals for the year. So, we will see you soon. Remember, the pool re-opens in February with a full range of programs, including water fitness classes, kayaking, and child and adult swimming lessons (pages 11-13 for details). Mark February 11-18th on your calendars – it’s our grand re-openingweek where we will showcase our newfacilities, equipment, programs, and havelots of great give aways (see page 10).

Sincerely, Lisa PittetSenior Manager, MacEwan Sport and Wellness

*New Members can enter during the month of February. Can not have been a member of MacEwan Sport and Wellness since June 2012.

WelcomeWelcome back to MacEwan Sport and Wellness, and let me say, if you haven’t been here for a while, you really should stop by – you will be amazed at the transformation of our facility, especially our fitness centre.

To add to our state-of-the-art cardio line of equipment, there are two new Climbmills (a must try – be prepared to get a fantastic workout) a VersaClimber, which we like to call the mountain climber, and two additional treadmills. Our cardio equipment comes complete with TVs and iPod docks, making the time fly by while you work out. Due to the popularity of our spin classes, we have added 20 new spin bikes in our spin studio. Check out class times on page 4. We’ve also brought in all brand new strength equipment – machines, dumbbells, barbells, benches, functional trainers and platforms. The machines are easy to use and great for people of all ages, targeting your muscles like never before. The two drop zones for lifting with dumbbells and barbells create a lighter (up to 60 lbs) and heavier lifting space (up to 110 lbs). The new equipment extends to our aerobic studio with new fitness bars, aerobic dumbells and step inclines to spice up your classes. We also have a wide assortment of “toys” for you to use, which really add to your workout and make for a lot of fun. ViPrs, sandbells, kettlebells, TRX mounts, a rebound wall for medicine ball throws (must be good for you if it’s medicine), plyometric boxes, heavy ropes, agility ladders… you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store! You may be wondering where all this new stuff could possibly fit – well, we’ve expanded with an additional 2,000 square feet of exercise space. We call it the Performance Zone, and it features three lifting racks and an official Olympic lifting platform for deadlifts, squats and other powerlifts. It also has a few cardio pieces and many of the toys listed above, making this an ideal location for personal training and some new offerings, such as the Get ‘Er Done class, featured on page 4.

Corporate Wellness Winter is here, and it often brings with it the winter blues. As the days get shorter and colder, many of us find shelter under woolly blankets, turn the heat way up, and pass the time in front of the TV with a hot cup of cocoa in our hands. Don't use winter as an excuse to neglect your fitness. Instead, try some of the new and exciting opportunities available for MacEwan staff and faculty:

• Avoid the winter doldrums by meeting new people, having fun and staying in shape with TECH - Team Challenge, our newest program. • Stay healthy during snow shoveling season by joining one of our core classes -- Pilates, Hatha Yoga, or Zumba -- to keep your back strong, your abs tight, and your body flexible. • Commit to your New Year's resolutions of eating right and getting fit by signing up for our group nutrition seminars, lunchtime classes, or some personal training sessions.

For organizations outside of MacEwan, consider signing-up for a Silver, Gold or Platinum Corporate Package and save 10-20% on annual Sport and Wellness membership dues. Learn more about staff programs, Corporate Membership Discounts and offsite consulting services by calling Kelly at 780.497.5134 or emailing her at [email protected].

zuMbA® Gold Zumba® Gold targets the largest growing segment of the population: baby boomers. It takes the Zumba® formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all the elements the Zumba® Fitness-Party is known for: the zesty Latin music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton; the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the invigorating, party-like atmosphere. Active older adults want camaraderie, excitement and fitness as a regular part of their weekly schedule. Zumba® Gold is the perfect fit. It’s a dance-fitness class that feels friendly, and most of all, fun. Preschool Lessons The Swim for Life Preschool Program gives children a head start on learning to swim. First they learn the basics to be safe and confident little swimmers. Water Smart® education is part of every Preschool level.

pReschool 1 These preschoolers learn to get in and out of the water safely. They'll learn to move safely in shallow water and use a lifejacket to be comfortable with their floats and glides.

pReschool 2 These youngsters will explore the water learning to submerge and exhale underwater. Buoyant aids are used to help them discover rollovers, glides and flutter kicks.

pReschool 3 These preschoolers will master their floats, glides and short swims on their front and back (2-3 m). They’ll be able to pick up objects from waist deep water and use their lifejackets to jump and roll into the deep end.

pReschool 4 These capable preschoolers will strengthen their flutter kicks and try swimming front crawl. They’ll start to learn how to support themselves in deep water and in the end they’ll do solo jumps and side rolls into deep water. Their lifejacket will support them while they learn to tread water and swim to safety (5-10 m) in the deep end.

pReschool 5 These skilled and independent youngsters will master short swims doing front crawl (5-10 m) and back crawl (3-5 m). They are ready to take on a forward roll into deep water with their lifejacket on and to tread water without the extra support. Here they will get their first chance to try whip kick and fitness training.

Swimmer Levels Swimmer levels make sure your child learns how to swim before they get in too deep. Each level challenges school aged children 5 years and older to develop safe entries, deep water support, underwater skills, and swimming strokes. Kids learn everlasting healthy habits by getting and staying fit.

swIMMeR 1 These beginning swimmers will work on safe entries, exits and moving through the water. When ready they’ll do floats, glides and kicking on their front and back without assistance. They'll even explore jumping into deep water and treading water with their lifejackets on.

swIMMeR 2 These children will be able to jump or side roll into deep water, tread water, and swim (10-15 m) using either front crawl or back crawl. They'll try ‘vertical’ whip kick and begin to work on their endurance level by stepping into the world of fitness interval training.

Swim for Life™ at MacEwan You're never too young to start and never too old to learn! Our Swim for Life™ Program stresses lots of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. We incorporate valuable Water Smart® education that uses hands-on teaching activites to create fun, active lessons that will last a lifetime. All programming is built around the Lifesaving Society Swim to Survive™ standard, which stresses orienting yourself after falling into the water, supporting yourself at the surface and swimming to safety.

swIMMeR 3 These swimmers will dive and do forward rolls into deep water. Watch them learn handstands and front somersaults underwater. They'll work on their front crawl, back crawl and whip kick over short distances and add some interval fitness training to their practice. By the end they’ll be able to meet the Swim to Survive standard: Roll into deep water, tread water (1 min.) and swim (50 m).

swIMMeR 4 These swimmers will swim further with their front crawl and back crawl. They'll get introduced to breaststroke arms drills, underwater swims and front crawl sprints. Interval training will add to their fitness level.

swIMMeR 5 These swimmers will try eggbeater kick, head up front crawl, and shallow dives. And just for fun try ‘tuck’ jumps and underwater back somersaults. They'll easily go the distance with a strong front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

swIMMeR 6 These swimmers will master eggbeater and scissor kicks, front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl. With the interval training and sprint racing drills they'll be ready to make the 300 m endurance workout. And just for fun they’ll try stride jumps and compact jumps. Next step: on to the Canadian Swim Patrol program.
