    RUNNINGSTITCH

    Therunningstitch isoneofthesimpleststitchesthatareusedtocreatepatternsor

    texture. It ismostly used for quilting. There aremany varieties of running stitch,

    interlacedrunningstitch,interlaceddoublerunningstitchandwhippedrunningstitch.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    First, trace the design on the fabric. Thread the embroiderymachinewith

    embroiderythreadandtrytouse itonwaste fabrictocheck thetensionofthemachine.Adjustitinsuchawaythatthetensionisneithertightnorloose.

    Putthefabricinwhichthedesignistracedandfixitintheringproperly.

    Keep the frame under themachine needle, such that themotif should be

    clearlyvisible.

    Pull the bobbin thread up by running the flyer of the machine towards

    oneself.Here, theupper thread shouldbekept looseand the lower thread

    shouldbekepttightinthemachine.

    Runthemachineontopofthedrawnlinesandcoverallthemotiflines,asper

    thechosencolorthread.Firstdotheoutlineofthemotifandthengradually

    startfillingeachareafromrighttoleftorvice versa.

    It is easy to complete the motif by single color first and then switch to

    anothercolor.

    ROUNDSTITCH

    Theroundstitchisalsoreferredtoasthecirclestitch.Theroundstitchisusedto

    makebagsandothersimilaritems.Thistypeofastitchhasnumerousapplication

    thatgenerallyinvolvesomesortofseamingoroversewing;henceitisverystronbut leavesthecutedgesof thestitchedclothexposed.Roundstitchneedsmor

    expertisedoingit.It'sabasicrunningstitchbutinacircularformat.

    direction.

    SATINSTITCH

    ThesatinstitchisalsocalledtheDamaskstitch.Itisoneoftheoldestembroidery

    stitchesthatarelargelyfoundontraditionalembroideriesinalmostallcountries.

    ThetraditionalembroideriesofchinaandJapanexcelledintheuseofthisstitch.It

    isformedbyworkingstraightstitchesclosetogether.Satinstitchisalsousedon

    quiltingandpatchwork.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.Thisisthemostbeautiful

    stitchesinmachineembroidery.

    Thestitchisdonebetweentwolines.Makeastitchinsuchawaythat

    twostitchestoucheachother.

    Thefabricshouldnotbevisiblebetweenthestitches.

    Thestitchlengthvariesaccordingtothedesignandeachstitchisdone

    EYELETSTITCH

    Theeyeletstitch isalsoknownastheeyestitch.Thisparticularstitch isfoundon

    canvaswork,pulledworkandcountedwork. It isworkedonevenweave fabric

    withthefabricheldundertension inahoopora frame. It ismadeupofstitche

    arranged ina square.As a filling stitch itcreatea regulargeometricpatternso

    blocks that, ifworked under tension and pulledwith each stitch,would have a

    smallholeatthecentre.

    It is one of the finestembroidery inwhich smallestmotif can bemadeCircula

    /ovalsmallsizescanbedonenicelywitheyeletstitch.

    CORDINGSTITCH

    Fabricwrappedcording isoftenused toadd strengthandadecorative touch to the

    stitch. The stylingoptionsof contrasting cordingdoubleweltingandjumbo cording

    giveadecorator look to slipcovers,bedspreads,pillows,window treatmentad table

    clothhems.Jumbocordingcanalsobeusedtomakeplain,knotted,twistedorbraided

    drapery tiebacks.Cordingembroideryhasvery strongvisibilityas compare toother

    normalstitch. It isnotembroiderywithwhichyou fillyourmotif.Geometricalmotif

    wouldbepreferablyusedforthisembroiderystitch.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Tomakecordingstitchembroideryacord (Dori) isneededon topofwhich

    embroidery is done. It's a 3D looking embroidery; cord makes it more

    dimensionalanddifferentsizesofcordsareavailableinthemarket.

    First,tracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.Thecordisathickthreadwhichis

    usedtomaketheoutlineofthedesign.Itisnotusedtofillthemotif.

    Takeacord,putitalongthetraceddesign,andcoveritwithasatinstitch.Cut

    thecordcarefullyafterfixingit.

    Filltheinsideofthedesignwithsimplerunningstitch.Thismakesthedesign

    lookbeautifulandneat.

    Flexibilityofcording is limited; itcannotgiveyou sharpedges,hencecurvydesignsarepreferred

    LONGANDSHORT STITCH

    Thisstitchispracticallypaintingwithneedle.itisafillerstitchthatfillsthe

    motif, flowers etc. with colored embroidery thread. it is a simple

    modificationofthesatinstitch,wherethelengthofthestitchesareattwo

    levels. It isusedwhenthespacetobe filled istoobigtobecoveredwith

    thesatinstitch.Itisalsotogiveashadedeffect.inthefirstrowthestitch

    are alternately long and short and follow the outline of the shape. The

    stitchinthefollowingrowsisworkedinthesamemannertogiveasmooth

    appearance.

    FANCYSTITCH

    ThefancystitchisspecificallyfoundinChineseembroidery.Thistypeof

    astitchoftencomesunderbasicstitches,likesatinstitch,scrollstitch,

    and eyelet stitch, etc. It's a basically a combination of all various

    stitches together tomakean interestingcomposition. It'sa fun stitch

    wherepeoplethinkoutoftheboxandcreatesomethingaesthetic.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.

    Outline the design with desiredmulti colored threadswith

    eitherrunningorsatinstitch.

    The stitch should follow a geometric pattern to give it a

    symmetricallook.

    Color variation should be made appropriately so that the

    differencesindvariousstitchescanbeeasilyrecognized.

    SCROLLSTITCH

    Thescrollstitchisalsoknownasthesingleknottedlinestitchandcreatesaknotte

    line,which follows the curveofadesignwell. The scrollembroidery is a typica

    Chinese stitch that ismainly used formakingmonograms, Victorian scrolls an

    curlicuesembroiderydesigns,andformakingpillowcasesadembroideredborder

    of napkins, table covers etc. Modernmachines are equipped well to get thfinishingofthescrollstitch.

    Thedoriembroideryismostwidelyknownamongstgarmentmanufacturers,

    exporter and embroidery. This is suitable for both hand and machine

    embroidery. With up gradation in machine technology, the dori work is

    makingaplaceinthefashionindustriestoo.

    PROCESSOFMAKING: Takeaplainfabricandtracetherequireddesignontothebackofthe

    fabric.

    Doriisdonethroughthesimplerunningstitch.

    Thedoristitchisdoneatthebackofthefabric.

    Nowturnthefabricandcoverthedoriwithasimplesatinstitch.

    CHAIN STITCH

    Thechainstitchisasewingmachineembroiderytechnique inwhich

    seriesofloopedstitchesfromachainlikepattern

    The chain stitchwas thedefault stitchusedby the sewingmachine

    earlier;however,asitiseasilyunraveledfromthefabric,thiswassoo

    replacedwiththemoresecureLockstitch.Themodernmachinesar

    equippedtomakethesestitcheseasily.

    STEM STITCH

    Thestemstitchismainlydonetogivetheoutlineofamotifortomake

    flowerstems,andishence,calledso.Inthestemstitch,thestitchruns

    from left to right. The thread alwaysemerges in the left sideof the

    previousstitch.Itcanalsobeworkedasafilingstitch,ifworkedclosely

    together within a shape, until it is completely filled. The modern

    machinesareequippedenoughtoenableyoutodothisstitcheasily.Itisanotherversionofsatinstitchandisthesimplestamongstall.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.

    Nowmake a simple running stitch along the outline of the

    motif.However, care shouldbe taken that the second stitch

    runbythemachinestartsfromabovethemidpointofthefirst

    one and hence the process continues with the third one

    startingatthemidpointofthesecond.

    Care shouldbe taken that the lengthofeachstitchdrawn is

    equal.

    PINWORK

    AsthenamesuggestsPinworkisdonewiththehelpofapinanditisverysimplei

    nature.PinWorkismainlydonetogiveaneffectofelevateddesignsthatmaketh

    embroideryallthemorebeautifulandgorgeous.Asthestitchrunsaroundthepinit has got a round impressive shape of design on the fabric. Starting from

    traditionalstitchesofRajasthantoGujaratandBengal,allhaveadoptedpinworki

    theirworks.This stitch isdone formakingdesignsonpillow covers,bed cover

    handkerchiefsandvariousothercostumesforbothmenandwomen.

    horizontal/verticaldirectionwithinthetracedareaofthefabricwherethepin

    Whenoneneedleisfinishedputthe2ndoneclosetoitinoppositedirection.This

    becauseaneedlevariesinthickness.Itisthickerattheeyeandgraduallythins

    downatthetip.Toevenoutthepinworkweplacetheneedlesinopposite

    directionalternately.

    Pullthepincarefullyafterthecompletionofthestitch.Continuethestitchtillthe

    traceddesigniscompleted.

    Directionofneedleisveryimportantsubjectinthisembroiderybecauseofthe

    shapeofneedle.

    BUTTONHOLESTITCH

    The buttonhole stitch and the related blanket stitch are used

    tailoring,embroidery,andneedlelacemaking.

    L;dependingonthespacingofthestitches.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.

    Makeaverticalstitchalongthedesign,followedbyhorizontalstitc

    TARKASH WORK

    TheartofTarKashi(wireembroidery)isaminuteandintricate

    depictionofflowers,fish,birdsandanimals,dancingposturesofRadha

    andKrishna,Ganeshji,Vishwakarama,dancingpeacocks,variousposesofdanceanddresses.Thecreativelyaswellastheneatnessofthework

    Tarkashastitchisgenerallydoneonthebordersofthe

    garment.

    Ithasgeometricshapes(squaresonly).

    Fillthesquaresinaparticularmanner.

    Thestitchcomesinsideatthemidpointofeachsquarefrom

    allsidesofthesquare.

    From

    one

    corner

    needle

    goes

    inside

    creates

    a

    SHADEWORKSTITCH

    The shade work with threads of varying colors is an old style of

    embroidery commonly used inmany countries. The shadework is can

    easilybedoneonanautomaticsewingmachinewhereadesignormotif

    isfedwithdefinedcolorsforthespreadworkonthefabric.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.

    Selectvaryingcolorsbelonging to the same family tocomplete

    onemotif e.g. flower.One family color can be defined by an

    exampleofred.Ifoneisselectingredthentheothercolorsused

    alongwithredshouldbelighterredsuchaspinkanddarkerred

    suchasmaroonsothatthemotifcanhaveshadingfromdarkto

    light.

    Shadeworkisdonewithlongandshortstitch.

    Thedarkcolorthreadisfilledontheouterpartofdmotif.Asthe

    needlemovesinsidewithinthemotif,thethreadcolorchanges.

    It becomes lighter in themiddle and then at last the lightest

    color thread isused in the innermostpart,e.g.apetalof the

    flower. Oncethemotif,(e.g.leaf)changesthecolorfamilychangesand

    sowouldthevaryingcolorsbelongingtothefamily.

    Howevertheprocessofworkingonthemotifwithlongandshort

    stitchremainsthesame.

    SHADOWWORK

    Asthenamewouldsuggest,thebasicideaistousesheerfabricwhere

    onlythebarestoutlineofthepatternappearsonthesurfaceandthe

    crisscrossed threads underneath show through, thereby creating a"shadow" pattern. It is the opacity of the threads beingworked on

    sheer fabric which defines this form of embroiderymore than any

    singlestitchorcolorcombination.

    White onwhite is probably the oldest andmost prevalent form of

    shadow work, which is why it is often lumped in with white work

    embroidery.Although it is thought tohaveoriginated inother lands,

    this ancient textile art really flowered in India, where it is called

    Chikankari.Muchofitisstillwhiteonwhite,pastelsonwhite,ortone

    ontone. However,brightlycoloredthreadsworkedundersheerfabrics

    havetremendouseyeappeal.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Tracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.Fillthemotifwithsatin

    orlongandshortstitch.

    Putorganzatissuefabric,preferablywhiteontopofthefilled

    motif.Whiteorganzaenhancesthecoloredmotifbeneathit.

    Nowmake outline of themotif on top of the organzawith

    runningstitch.

    Eachandeverymotifofthedesignhastobeoutlinedontop

    oftheorganzatomakevisibilitymoreclear.

    Extra organza can be cut in the end. Care should be taken

    whilecuttingtheexcessorganzasincethefabricisverysheer.

    CUTWORK

    Cutworkembroideryisabeautifulformofneedlework,whereportions

    ofthebackgroundfabricarecutawayanddiscarded,withtheedges

    workedoverinbuttonhole/satinorzigzagstitch.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    First,tracethedesignontothedesiredfabric.

    Makeasatinstitchontheoutlineoftheareaswhichhavetobe

    cut.

    Cutopenthe innerpartof the fabricaroundwhichsatinstitch

    hasbeendoneneatlysothatthestitchisnotdestroyed.

    Tofinishtheopenedgeproperlydocordingstitchorarunning

    stitcharound.

    The restof the areawhere cutwork isnothappening canbe

    completedwithvariousembroideries likechain/longandshort

    stitchorroundstitch.

    MIRRORWORK

    As the name suggests, glass work is done specifically to fix glasses

    (mirrors)ontothefabric.This isverypopularembroideryprevalent in

    Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Punjab and also in certain pockets of Uttar

    Pradesh. Lately, glass work has become much popular and even

    designersareusingthisartformintheirwork.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.

    Whereverthemirrorhastobeput;cutthefabricoftheopen

    area of the design and finish the round edgeswith a satin

    stitchorbuttonholeparticularly.

    Oncethefinishingoftheopencutarea isdone,puttheglass

    frombelowbypastingitonanotherfabric.

    Attachboththefabricwitharunningstitchontheouterside

    ofthesatinstitch.

    Thisserves2purposes:itattachesthemirrorfrombehindand

    italsogivesafinishingtothesatinstitchonthefront.

    Care should be taken that the needle does not touch the

    mirrorasthismayleadtoaneedlebreakage.

    SEQUINSWORK

    Bymaking use of sequinswork, one can craft fine embroidery on sarees

    lehngasandSalwarkameez.Sequinsworkisextensivelyusedbydesignersfo

    makingbridalcostumes.Sequinsworkcanalsobedonebymachine.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Firsttracethedesignonthedesiredfabric.

    Sequinsareavailableintwotypesinthemarket;flatandKatori.The

    flatsequinsareeasytoattachthantheKatorisequins.

    To start, place the sequin on the outline of the design. Put th

    threadedneedleinsidetheholeofsequinsandpulltheneedleoutso

    thatitformsaloopatthelowerend.

    Once the needle comes out through the same hole of the firs

    sequin,placeanothersequinbeneaththefirstonesuchthatthenex

    drop of the needle falls into the hole of the second sequin. Th

    overlappingofthesequindependsonthestitchlength.

    Repeattheprocesstillthewholemotifiscompleted.

    WithKatorisequinsfirstputallthesequinsinathreadlikeastring

    Donottieknotsonthestringends.Astringisrequiredbecauseth

    ZARIWORK

    Zariisthefineglitterythreadofgoldandsilver,andtheembroiderymade

    by

    using

    them

    is

    called

    zari

    work.

    The

    stitches

    are

    extremely

    fine

    and

    are

    workedwith dexterity and skill,with the embroidery starting from the

    center and proceeding to the outer edges in a circular fashion. Zari

    designsareused for table linensandalso formakingarticles fpersonal

    wear. A vast variety of shawls are handcrafted in is also done with

    machinesthathavecertaintechnicaladvantagestoworkwithsilverand

    goldthreads.

    PROCESSOFMAKING:

    Trace the design on the desired fabric. An Indian motif is

    preferred since thegold zari thread looks thebestwith sucha

    kindofmotif.

    Forzariworkstart,tofillyourbobbinwiththesamezarithread

    andtensionofthreadshouldnotbetootight,ithastobelooser

    thanupperthreadtomaintaintheloopingofthethread.

    Zarithread(Lurex)isavailableinthemarketinmetallicshades.

    Themotif isoutlinedandfilledwitheitherarunningstitchora

    satin stitch or a zigzag stitch.Repeat the process tomake the

    fillingprominentisneeded.

    Once the design is filled, remember to outline the filledmotif

    withacontrastingcolortogiveacleanandenhancedlook.

    CHINESE STITCH

    The Chinese embroidery is particularly known for its exquisite

    workmanship. Executed in fine close stitches, it close stitches, it looks

    smooth,neatandglossy.Thestitchesarehardlyvisible.Thecleverusesof

    thick and thin coloured silk threads, and a rich variety of stitches,

    guaranteeitssuperbquality.

    QUILTING STITCH

    Thequiltingstitchisasimplestitchthatstartsatthecenterofthequilt

    kept even all around. It is always recommended to have a quilting

    needle,which is very small for thiswork ad quilting thread, as it is

    strongerthanordinarythread.

    Thepatchworkwasinitiallyusedformendingandwasespeciallyuseful

    inhidingtorninblankets/clothes.Latelyasyoumusthavehadnoticed

    embroidery is gradually finding prominence in contemporary fashion

    wear. Similarly Patchworkhas alsonow beingextensivelyused as a

    decorativestitchratherthanformerelymendingasitwasdoneearlier.
