TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema Music 15Even while Dandapani Desikar enjoyed a good measure of

success as a Carnatic musician, he was also involved in TamilCinema in which he did enjoy a fair measure of success duringthe 1930-1940s.

He played the lead role in six films: ‘Pattinathar’ (1935),‘Vallala Maharaja’ (1937), ‘Thayumaanavar’(1938),‘Maanickavaasagar’ (1939), ‘Nandanaar’ (1942) and‘Thirumazhisai Aazhvaar (1948). Out of these films,‘Pattinathaar’ and ‘Nandanaar’ were big hits with the GeminiStudio S. S. Vasan’s production of ‘Nandanar’ being one of hismost successful movies and remembered by one and all to thisday after sixty-plus long years.

Not many are aware that Desikar sang a Tamil song off thescreen in a Kannada movie of 1935. That was ‘SamsaaraNowka’, meaning ‘Boat of Life’. It was the first Kannada moviewith a contemporary theme - known as ‘social’ in Indianfilmland parlance - and was based on a stage play which isconsidered to be one of the biggest hits in the history of IndianTheater. Written by H. L. N. Simha, this play is believed to havebeen staged all over South India over 4000 to 5000 times.During that period the demon of linguistic intolerance had notyet raised its ugly bare-fanged head and Kannada plays werestaged with success even in non-Kannada speaking areas ofthe old Madras Presidency and also Madras City.

‘Samsara Nowka’ was staged successfully at ‘SoundaryaMahal’ on Govindappa Naicken Street which was once apopular venue of entertainment in the George Town area ofMadras City. Today few remember this hall which has van-ished with the passage of time by giving way to shoppingcenters. Huge crowds used to attend the Kannada playand many of the men and women shed copious tears watchingthe play! Such was the emotional impact of the Kannada playof the 1930s.

Two of the ‘tear-shedders’, involved in films, were K. RajagopalChetty and his brother Nanjappa Chetty. They were so im-pressed and moved that they made it as a Kannada movie, written and directed by Simha. The movie was also a major hitand created Kannada film history. The lead pair of the play andthe film, B. R. Panthulu, and M. V. Rajamma, came into Tamilmovies and both became stars of South Indian cinema. Apartfrom being an actor, Panthulu made a mark as a successfulmulti-lingual producer-director with many hits to his credit.Rajamma enjoyed a long innings, first as heroine, and later asa character actress excelling in ‘mother’ roles.

In the Kannada movie, the hero, fighting against the prob-lems of life and down in the dumps, wanders restlessly. Thissequence was shot in the well-known Paanagal Park area of T.Nagar in Madras City. As the hero wanders, Desikar sings a‘Pattinathar’ composition in Tamil in the background, whichfits the mood and the mental state of the harassed hero. Intoday’s situation of linguistic intolerance it is difficult to believethat a Kannada movie could have a song in Tamil! But thosewere the happy days when people appreciated art irrespectiveof the language. Such were the cultural levels those days! Sadlyall of that vanished with the birth of the linguistic States, thanks to the evil machinations of self-centered, selfish andcorrupt politicians. Very sad indeed...

(The well-known landmark of T.Nagar is wrongly pronouncedby one and all as ‘Panagal Park’. Indeed the correct pronuncia-tion is ‘Paanagal’ Park. It is named after one of the greatpoliticians of Madras, leader of the Justice Party of yester-decades, and the Chief Minister of the old Madras Presidencyduring the 1920’s. He was an Andhra, Raja of Paanagal.)

Besides his knowledge of music and his inborn talent andacquired skills, Desikar’s major asset was his melodious, fas-cinating voice. According to Mr. Fielden, the first boss of AllIndia Radio in Delhi, Desikar’s voice was the only one amongCarnatic musicians which qualified according to the standardsof the Western Classical Music. He described all other topCarnatic musicians, including Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer,Musiri Subramania Iyer, Madurai Mani Iyer, and even theinimitable Ariyakudi Ramanuja Ayyangar as ‘mere crooners’!According to Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal’s famous composi-tion ‘Sapthasawara sobillu….’, the singer’s music must comefrom the “naabhi”, namely from the pit of the stomach and notfrom the throat! (To be continued)

Women Helpline 1091

For two months there was no letter or telegram fromNairobi, capital of British East Africawhere my father wasworking as Personal Assistant to the Post Master General, the highest ranking British officer after the British Gover-nor.

Germany, on the war-path, was trying to kill every non-German to make Hitler the World Boss, but, totally uncon-cerned, T. A. Nayar, my father, earned his honest salarythinking of his wife and four children in that land underBritish protection.

When there was a slight lessening of the stranglehold byHitler, father managed to get us passage on a rickety shipto our own country via Ceylon, for which act we all thankedgood old Hitler, because Ceylon is a beautiful island. We stillhave two carved elephants that we bought in Ceylon.

Let us skip a few years until Hitler vanished from earthandthe world became a haven of peace. I, as a World Warveteran, distinctly remember the horror of even the limitedpain we saw suffered by others. We, as a family, condemnedwar in any place, though it had no impact on us personally.

But that was the end of our stay in Nairobiwhere I hadbeen born! We did not return to Nairobi, as Truman’s littletoy, the atomic bomb, made war a foolish aberration and westuck to our Kerala teeming with gods and their wives andfamily.

Though it took one more atom bomb to terrorise the world(especiallyJapan), Hitler through death or some other meanswas unheard of, and the world was spared greater sins.

The small wars one hears of these days are akin to plastictoys of the toddlers. Compared to the atomic terror thatended the SecondWorld War, the world is now at peace ofunimaginable quiet. We can at least hear ourselves think! There is peacewhere there could be pieces, had not manbecome emancipated to discover love, peace and quiet tohear oneself thinking peaceful thoughtsthat engender loveand companionship. Bomb the bombs!

Silt from drain dumped on road margin

Cricket played in Corporation groundin the night

Sir, I am a resident of 10th Sector, K. K.Nagar. Adjoining my house, there is a Corpora-tion Playground where a number of youth playcricket with lights at night after the parkclosing hours. The park authorities never closethe gates after the closing hours, thereby giv-ing access for the boys to play cricket.

They make a lot of noise and often get intofights causing nuisance to the nearby resi-dents.

They disturb the households by knocking onthe door at odd times to retrieve their ball afterhitting it into the compound or terrace.

It causes lots of discomfort, especially tosenior citizens.

I appeal to the park authorities to maintainpark timings and not allow it to be misusedafter closing hours. M. Munusamy, AP777,59th Street, K. K. Nagar

Pillayar Koil Street in bad conditionSir, I am a resident of Pillayar Koil Street,

Jafferkhanpet. The street has been in a badcondition ever since the floods last December.

The surface has been completely washedaway and it is riddled with a number of potholes.Motorists have a tough time and residentssuffer from dust pollution.

Other nearby roads in Bharathidasan Colonyand Vasudevan Colony were relaid after thefloods and are in good condition.

I appeal to the Corporation officials to relayPillayar Koil Street at the earliest. R.Sowrirajan, 19, Pillayar Koil Street,Jafferkhanpet, Ph: 98406 20525

Vacant plot misusedSir, A vacant Metrowater property adjoining

37th Street is being misused.A portion of the wall is damaged and miscre-

ants find it easy to enter the land, which isstrewn with liquor bottles and remnants offood. Garbage is being dumped in the plot andMetrowater sewage tankers are dumping wasteinside it.

We appeal to Metrowater officials to cleanthe plot and repair the breach in the wall toensure that it is not misused. The authoritiescan also develop a park in the vacant property.7th Sector Residents’ Welfare Association,K. K. Nagar

Sir, Corporation workers are removing siltfrom stor-mwater drains and dumping it on theroad margin. It is not being removed and overtime the silt flows back into the drain, as it israining frequently.

So, what is the use of desilting drains? Earlierthe silt was collected in leak proof plastic bagsand taken away for disposal. This photo wastaken on Dr. Ramasamy Salai, K. K. Nagarnear Metrowater depot.

I appeal to Corporation officials to organizeimmediate collection of the silt for disposalinstead of dumping it on the road margin. R.Balachander, Madley Road, T. Nagar
