Tamil Cinema Music 13Ramakrishnan Chettiar fixed B. N. Rao to direct the maiden

production of Central Studios and looked around for a suitablestory. He and his friends were interested in making a musicalmovie. At that period the legendary Prabhat Pictures produc-tion ‘Saint Tukaram’ was making waves all overthe country.

Long before Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnanand the lot came on the horizon, it was the first Indian film tobe screened at the Venice Film Festival. And praised for itstechnical qualities! A little known fact of Indian Film history!

A folk myth of Maharashtra, it was a Bhakthi-drenchedstory and the Tukaram bhajans were well known even outsidethat State. A film on him had not been attempted in southIndian languages and the producers decided to make the filmin Tamil and also Telugu because most Coimbatoremill-owners, being Naidus, spoke Telugu.

Whom to cast as the Saint Tukaram? According to SriramuluNaidu the suggestion to cast Musiri Subramania Iyer camefrom Sir R. K. Shanmugham Chettiar. He knew Musiri well andit is not surprising that he recommended him to his brother!

For the Telugu version, M. L. Tandon , one of the pioneerfilmmakers of India, sadly forgotten today like most pioneers, was fixed as director, and C. S. R. Anjaneyulu, the famousTelugu stage and screen star, was cast as Tukaram.

M. L. Tandon later directed many well known Tamil films andthe list includes ‘Nandanar’. Besides Musiri, others in the castof ‘Tukaram’ were the famous comedian and character actorK. Sarangapani, noted character actor R. Balasubramaniam(Anuradha Ramanan, well-known Tamil writer, was hisgranddaughter), K. A. Chokkalinga Bhagavathar, K. Seetha (aBrahmin lady, she later became Mrs. Sriramulu Naidu), R.Balasaraswathi (early Telugu and Tamil film star, child ac-tress, and famous voice-lending off-screen playback singer of‘Malligai Poo Jaadhi Rojaa…’ (Raji En Kanmani) fame! Latershe married the Raja of Kolanka and gave up films. Now in herlate seventies, she lives with her two sons in Hyderabad.)

Not being an actor, Musiri was not at ease in front of a moviecamera. He also felt uncomfortable and even embarrassedwith the women acting with him, the glaring heavy lights, gaping crowds on set and all. During the shooting he ran into apeculiar problem.

Tukaram had a moustache and since Musiri was a clean-shaven Brahmin, a mush was attached to his upper lip. In thatperiod make-up materials were not as sophisticated as theyare today. The spirit gum used to stick hair-pieces wouldevaporate quickly and the gum that was left behind had atendency to pull and irritate the skin! It was hell if one’s skin wassensitive and allergy-prone! Poor Musiri had more than hellwith his lip adornment and, when he could not take it anymore,he cried halt to shooting! Shooting was stopped for somemonths until he grew his own moustache and the process tooka long time. ‘A watched mustache never grows!’, Musiri wise-cracked coining the proverb years later!

Balasaraswathi recalled to this writer 50 years later, ‘Musiriwas a very kind man and had much charm and perfect man-ners. I acted as his daughter in the film and he treated me ashis own child. He had no children and was very fond of me.

He taught me how to sing, how to hold a note and all thatwhich helped me later when I became a singer. As he was newto cinema and B. N. Rao was directing his first film, there wereproblems at first and some early scenes were directedby M. L. Tandon. At that time Rao did not know Tamil and spokeonly Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam and English.

So he directed Musiri in English which impressed one and allon sets! All watched the two talking in fluent English with aweand wonder! In those days very few actors knew that language. Some wondered if an English film was being made! All of usmoved like a family.” (To be continued)

The insecure life of asecurity guardBy S. Vidyaakar

The car honks relentlessly and the 73-year-old security guard Velusamy, who has beenwatering the plants, closes the tap and rushesto the gate to open it.

After two minutes of waiting in their air-conditioned car, the family gets impatient andangry, “Where is the security guard? He isnever at the gate,” cursed the driver. Theyfrown at Velusamy as they drive in.

His worry is the loss of job if residents com-plain to the Building Association, howevertrivial it might be. This job had given him theopportunity to earn some money and not be aburden on his son.

But, in the apartment complex, he seemed tohave many masters and each one wanted hisor her order to be obeyed at once. In an emer-gency, he was treated like a friend but, in theladder of humanity, he was not even on thelowest rung.

The so called ‘Shelter’ that he was providedwith did not protect him from the hot sun or therain. He walked with a limp because of con-stantly climbing the stairs, walking and stand-ing at the gate.

One fine morning, a resident came down tocheck on Velusamy as he was not answeringthe gate phone. He found Velusamy sleepingsitting on his worn out chair. When touched,Velusamy fell sideways. Perhaps his heart hadwound down by the pressures of the work or hemight have decided to take an eternal rest.

There was no big fuss. His son was informedand the body was removed. Very soon anotheraged security guard was found. It is quite easywith so many old men looking for jobs thesedays
