Award winning NYC singer/songwriter Suzi Shelton is thrilled to return to her hometown for

a family show with friend and bassist Jeff Martin. Suzi has been rocking kids and parents alike

for over 10 years in such prestigious venues as The White House Easter Egg Roll, the Lincoln

Center Tree Lighting Ceremony, and the Tribeca Film Festival. Suzi grew up in Chesterland,

Oh and has over six prestigious awards under her belt for her 2 CD’s and live DVD. You may

have seen Suzi in your local Gymboree Play & Music, as she is the host of a series of award

winning Gymboree music and movement DVD’s. Suzi and her band are currently showcasing

tunes from her latest EP "Tomboy in a Princess Dress," which will be released in it's entirety

as her third solo album this coming year, as well as performing her old favorites, like "Goin'

Box Top Challenge has Begun!

Box Tops for the month of October will be collected by student council members the week of the 28th, so start sending in those Box Tops and Campbell's labels. All Box Top labels need to be on the sheets

that were sent home. You can also get them on line. Campbell's labels should be sent in a baggie or envelope. There will be a classroom winner for the upper hall and the lower hall. Help your student's class win the SURPRISE BOX !!!!

Parents must follow the proper procedures for arrival and dismissal. These rules are in place to ensure the

safety of your children. When you choose to no follow the rules, you put your child and other children in jeop-

ardy.

Please be reminded that when you drop off your child(ren) in the morning, you are to make the

loop around the parking lot, wait in line, and then drop your child(ren) off at the sidewalk.

Parents are not permitted to pull into a parking spot to let your child(ren) out of the car.

You must make the loop and let them out at the sidewalk.

For dismissal, if you are picking up your child, you must park your car and come into the build-

ing. You cannot have your child meet you at your car in the parking lot. Please know how easily an accident can

happen. We are dealing with children who can quickly dart out in front of a car. This is for the protection of all

children. We know the weather can be cold or rainy, but if you choose to pick up your child, please follow the

above procedure.

It is the responsibility of parents to follow these rules. There is no supervision of parking lot procedures. Our

children’s safety depends of you. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Chardon Local Schools Charge Procedure Elementary Charge Procedure—Every Child will be al-

lowed to charge 2 meals before receiving the alternate lunch choice. The student will be given an alternate lunch which

consists of American cheese sandwich/white milk/fruit. The student will be charged for a full or reduced lunch. Parents

will be notified by a letter home of the money shortage

Dear Maple Families and Friends,

Student Council is sponsoring their first fundraiser of the year. We are selling

“Pumpkin Grams” for $.50 each. We will be sending home the form as well as selling

them before school every morning from October 14-25th. The Pumpkin Grams will be delivered the

week of the 28th. Send as many Pumpkin Grams as you like to friends, teachers, staff, and family mem-

bers. If you have any questions, you can contact Diane Pirnat or Wendy Bartolovich (student council

advisors).

LEVY Q & A's

Q: What reductions have been made because of budget constraints?

A: The high school business program, art classes, math classes, guidance personnel, wood shop and technology classes have been cut or reduced. Middle school foreign language, family and consumer science, and literacy support services have been cut. Also, the elementary gifted program has been eliminated and art, music and physical education time reduced. At the middle and high school, a result of these class reductions is that more students are in study halls, sometimes 2 or more each day. There is now only one art teacher at CHS for all 1,200 students and 2 guidance counselors. Pay to play is now $450 per sport and $100 per student activity.

Q: Why don't we cut busing to save the district money?

A: Safety is a major consideration. By following state minimums, children (K-8) who live within 2 miles of school will be re-

quired to walk to school or get a ride from a parent. Because some of our elementary schools are in rural areas with no sidewalks,

this means those children would be walking along high speed roads like Route 6 and Bass Lake Road. Even if all children were

transported by parents, the resulting traffic congestion would be unmanageable. Older students (grades 9-12) would either walk or

get a ride, causing added congestion on North, Chardon and Maple streets and reducing safety for walkers. We have reduced trans-

portation costs by sharing a transportation supervisor with Kirtland Schools and by implementing route consolidations for 2013-

14, resulting in the reduction of several driver positions. This means longer bus rides for many of our students. If Issue 31 fails in

November, it is likely that the duration of school bus rides will get longer.

Levy Q & A’s Q: How many classes have been eliminated at Chardon High School due to district financial constraints caused by

levy failures: A: Due to financial constraints and budget cuts, there are 30 fewer elective classes available for Chardon High students to take than there were offered 10 years ago. This means many of our high school students are sitting in multiple study halls a day. Classes that have been lost include:
