My dear Children, Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

The beginning of Matthew chapter 4 highlights the tensest exchange of words with our Lord and the devil during the temptation Jesus encountered. The temptation happened following the manifestation of Jesus' divinity at his Baptism in the River Jordan (Mt. 3:17), and at the time Jesus was preparing to inaugurate His public ministry which will eventually leads into His Crucifixion, Resurrection and our Salvation.

After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry (Mt.4:3). Jesus was fasting before the inauguration of His public ministry. Then the tempter; looking for an opportunity to disrupt God's plan came to test Jesus. What follows is our Lord rebuking Satan with His revealed Words.

The first instance of temptation; satan challenges Jesus about His divine Sonship. Jesus rebukes satan by saying: "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. (Mt.4:4). Secondly: satan getting cleverer using the same way Jesus rebuked satan asking Him to jump down so it is written angels in charge of you will take care of Him. Jesus rebukes satan saying: "It is written, you shall not tempt the Lord your God"(Mt. 4:7). Thirdly, satan showing Jesus the glory of all earthly kingdom and offering Him all if He just worship satan. Jesus rebukes satan saying: "Begone, satan! for it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve (Mt. 4:10).

Jesus was preparing to reveal His Messianic mission and He rebukes satan by invoking the written Words of Lord our God. We can relate these in our life also. Just like Jesus rebuked satan with written Words of God, we can also rebuke and over come every instance of counterfeit glory and obstacle that put forth by satan.

Then the devil left Him (Mt. 4:11), soon after Jesus began to preach (Mt. 4:17), calling His first disciples (Mt.4:19) and heals the sick (Mt. 4:24). Like our Messiah tested and Revealed; as new disciples of Jesus we can also do all things Jesus did on His earthly life.

Our Church is entering into the liturgical season of Great Fast (േനാ�ുകാലം). Let us reflect on how Jesus rebuked satan by the writtenWords of God and ask Him to strengthen us from every temptation that we may encounter in our spiritual life.
